“What do investors want?” is the primary question motivating Graham Sinclair, my guest today and one of the pioneers in sustainable investing: from launching the PRI (Principles in Responsible Investment) into emerging markets in 2007, to working with iconic firms like KLD, IFC, Parametric and AIG on Wall Street. We sat down to talk about Sinclair's course at Harvard Extension School, “Making the Sustainable Investment Case,” which is one half of the Sustainable Finance micro certificate and a benchmark for candidates in the Masters of Sustainability program. New for 2025 is a two-part deep dive on Nature x Investment, drawing on the cutting-edge work of Irina Likhachova in biodiversity and fixed income. Sinclair is once again using “Fund Labs” projects for hands-on experiential learning with four specialist sustainable investment managers: Bill Page + Liz Simmie + Garvin Jabusch + Christofer Halldin. Listeners are in for a treat as Sinclair offers a unique perspective on what investors want.

Hello out there and welcome to or welcome back to the finding nature podcast. My name is Nathan Robertson-Ball and this is my show where I speak to the change makers and paradigm busters who are working towards and making a difference in our collective efforts to make the world a safer, more just and sustainable place. I love doing this show, and over the last couple of days finding nature as an endeavour turned one years old - what started as an experiment by running hosted conversations at my actual job just like this and holding three pilot events has become this wonderfully enriching and meaningful undertaking. I'm very grateful for all the help and support and participation and listening so many have offered me this past year, it's been the greatest professional undertaking of my career and I'm really pleased to be bringing you another fantastic guest who's been on the vanguard of Australian and global sustainable finance efforts and changes.Nathan Fabian joins today, and he is a man that an introduction on what roles he's held and work he's done barely addresses the phenomenal impact and contribution he has made towards reforming and creating a new trajectory for sustainable finance in this country and around the world.Nathan's career has involved being the Chief Executive at the Investor Group on Climate Change during the hottest years of Australia's climate wars, advisor to senior politicians, a formative experience in management consulting and since 2015 he's had an array of roles and titles at the United Nations Principles of Responsible Investment based in London and Brussels - from policy director to chief responsible investment officer and now chief sustainable systems officer. At the same time he was also appointed as the chairperson of the European platform on sustainable finance which developed and launched the world's first sustainable finance taxonomy. And in 2023 he was included in POLITICO's annual ranking of the 28 power players behind Europe's green agenda - a list involving Vladimir Putin as ‘the invader making the EU green'.This conversation was an absolute cracker. I've been replaying it in my head and recounting it to others ever since we sat down to chat. Nathan's experience and wisdom at the helm of some of the most significant efforts globally to re-plumb the financial system are simply remarkable, and as someone who has now spent a fair bit of career time in finance, this was both fascinating and insightful. From his experiences in multi-stakeholder dialogue processes to lessons from investment cases in the early contested years of clean energy policy in Australia to how he handles and manages his personal responses to breaking through the 1.5 degree barrier and watching the latest climate calamity in LA. This has something for everyone looking to make a mark in the world and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.Few have achieved what Nathan has not only in Australia but anywhere in the world, and this chat is essential listening for any of us striving to make big audacious change practical, possible and a reality. Hear from Dr. Jakob Thomae, Project Director for the Inevitable Policy Response, as we discuss their latest forecast and what it means for the transition to net-zero. Scenario analysis is the natural tool for anyone wanting to understand how climate-related risks might evolve over coming decades. The vast majority of climate scenarios, regardless of who produced them or what level of warming they predict, tend to report similar levels of physical risk over the next couple of decades or so. However, predictions about transition risk tend to be quite different between scenarios. This episode focuses in on the transition, and in particular the extraordinary work being done by the Inevitable Policy Response (IPR) to figure out the most likely course of the transition to net zero. We'll explore: ·         The IPR's surprisingly optimistic forecast, and they believe the world might look like by the end of the century; ·         The methodology behind their forecast, and how it differs from the scenarios produced by other groups; and ·         What this forecast means for risk and finance professionals. 0:00 -- Intro.2:12 -- Start of interview.3:00 -- Stephen's "origin story".  His start with IRRC in Washington, DC (1988). His focus on international corporate governance.7:01 -- The anti-Apartheid divestment campaign in South Africa. "Most people don't quite realize that in the U.S. the real corporate governance movement -what we might call today the ESG movement- stems from the campaign for anti-Apartheid sanctions and divestment." (early 1970s).10:27 -- On the historical background of investor advocacy, and his book on Isaac Le Maire "the first short seller and shareholder activist." The conflict with the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the early 1600s (the first joint-stock company in the world).15:19 -- On the evolution of U.S. corporate governance and the rise of institutional investors since the late 1980s (particularly the big four: BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street and Fidelity). "[F]or most of the time (from late '80s to about 7 years ago), corporate governance has been more or less an exercise in throat clearing, a box-checking exercise, a compliance/legal matter that had to be done because of the DOL Avon Letter in 1988 [pointing out that proxy voting, like buy/hold/sell decisions, is a fiduciary act, and must be for “the exclusive benefit of plan participants."] "There was a lot of corporate governance talk, but it was at the margins."19:27 -- What changed in large asset managers to go from "passive investors" to more active with investment stewardship. Some factors (in the last decade): 1) Influence from Europe, where they insisted that these large funds sign up for commitments such as the UN Principles for Responsible Investment, and "to demonstrate bona fides when it comes to ESG factors," 2) Many of their institutional clients were becoming more aware of the importance of ESG factors; 3) Biggest factor: rising class of millennial investors, who have a different set of expectations on their financial agents.25:54 -- On the new policies such as from BlackRock and Vanguard to pass-through voting power to beneficial owners. 28:50 -- "One of the most exciting development in the capital markets is that in the last few decades we made a lot of progress on 1) management accountability to boards; 2) boards better equipped to oversee management; and 3) boards responsiveness to institutional investors. But the last piece of the puzzle is the accountability of institutional investors to the real sources of capital (beneficial owners) - the governance of institutional investors or stewardship governance." [see article Agency Costs of Agency Capitalism, by Gilson and Gordon (2013)] Citizen investors initiatives (to give them a voice), for example Tumelo (in the UK) or Say Technologies in the US (purchased by Robinhood).32:30 -- On proxy advisors and the Best Practices Principles for Shareholder Voting Research and its Oversight Committee (where he was the founding Chairman until 2022). This is an example of "monitored self-regulation." Konstantinos Sergakis is now the Chair.38:34 -- On the practice of dual-class share structures (supermajority voting structures). "A perennial issue in corporate governance." The case of Elsevier and Robert Maxwell. 42:25 -- On "corporate governance with Chinese characteristics."44:37 -- Challenges and opportunities of corporate governance in regions such as the Middle East and Africa (where he has been active). "There has been progress at a pace that in my wildest dreams I would have not anticipated." The sovereign wealth funds are the next stage of progress, where they will go from passive to more active. Examples of stewardship from Malaysia, Singapore, Norway and South Africa.50:25 - The books that have greatly influenced his life: The Battle for the Soul of Capitalism, by John Bogle (2005) (and others by John Bogle)Presidential Power and the Modern Presidents, by Richard Neustadt (1991)The Torah.51:44 - His mentors, and what he learned from them. Paul Leventhal (Nuclear Control Institute)Richard Schneller (former Senate Majority Leader Connecticut State Senate)Ira Millstein, (partner Weil Gotshal)Jonathan Charkham (formerly with the Bank of England)53:17 -  Quotes he thinks of often or live his life by. From his high school teacher "Never trust the magic of the printed word.”53:50 - An unusual habit or an absurd thing that he loves: olive picking.54:28 - The living person he most admires: his wife.Stephen Davis is a senior fellow at the Harvard Law School Programs on Corporate Governance and Institutional Investors__ You can follow Stephen on social media at:Twitter: @StephenM_DavisLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-davis-6282424/__ You can follow Evan on social media at:Twitter: @evanepsteinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/epsteinevan/ Substack: https://evanepstein.substack.com/__Music/Soundtrack (found via Free Music Archive): Seeing The Future by Dexter Britain is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License

Nature provides the building blocks for civilization, arable soil, air and water filtration, ore and minerals for extraction, and economic and recreational opportunities. In almost any other context, you would expect to pay for these services. But with nature, we are wont to expect these things for nothing. Hence the title for the white paper we released late last year, “We don't value nature.”As financiers and economists, we are wont to look at nature and try to derive an ROI. And for that reason, institutions have underrated nature—the returns were not competitive with other asset classes. Part of the reason for that is society had not properly placed a price on all the benefits and pleasure it derives from nature. And by doing so, the thinking goes, nature will find a place in investors' portfolios. On this episode of RPM, Susanne Tavill, StepStone's Head of Responsible Investment, discusses nature-based investing. Among other things we discuss: How better pricing can help resolve the nature crisis (9:39); The relationship between climate and nature investing (13:40);  The challenges investors are facing in building a nature-based portfolio (20:32); COP15: where it succeeded and how it can improve (23:12); and How the digital divide has been a two-way street (28:58).
