This week's guest is author and journalist Angelica Malin, who recently published Unattached: Empowering Essays on Singlehood, a curated anthology of 30 writers (including me!) exploring the experience of being single, which was published by Square Peg earlier this year. Angelica, or Jelly as I know her, just so happens to be one of my closest friends. During our conversation, we discuss how our close friendship (and having other ‘single' friends) is one of the most important factors in navigating a happy, ‘unattached' lifestyle – from being each other's plus-ones at parties to empowering one another to take solo trips to Santorini (you're going to love Angelica's account of hers). Angelica also shares how the breakdown of a five-year-long relationship at the beginning of the pandemic led to her creating a community of single women through her work, after deciding she – and others – shouldn't have to navigate this lifestyle in isolation. This is an intimate conversation between close friends, and I'm so happy that, through the beauty of podcasting, you can be part of it. You can order Angelica Malin's book, Unattached: Empowering Essays on SInglehood, now from Amazon and Waterstones. You can also order my book, Alonement: How To Be Alone and Absolutely Own It, which is based on this very podcast, now from Amazon and Waterstones. Today I am joined by Angelica Malin. Angelica is an award winning entrepreneur, journalist and author, as well as the founder and editor in chief of about time magazine. She very recently published Unattached, a wonderful book consisting of 30 personal essays written by 30 different women on their experiences of being single. Unattached reflects both the unique challenges and the glorious benefits of singlehood. Representation of single women in their 30's looks a lot like Bridget Jones and not so much like women who are stepping into their power and shrugging off the shackles of traditional labels, and that's exactly what Angelica is here to do. She's kickstarting a single revolution and it was a pleasure to have this conversation with her. Angelica: @jellymalin Me: @laurajenkinson / @whatslovegotpod
The award-winning poet Fiona Benson retells the Greek myth of the Minotaur, upending the legend of the dashing male hero slaying the monster in the labyrinth. In a series of poems in her new collection Ephemeron we hear from the bull-child's mother – the betrayed and violated Pasiphae. Benson tells Helen Lewis she wanted to explore male and female desire, and the extraordinary cycles of violence and abuse of power in the Greek myths. The cultural historian Ivan Jablonka has taken his native France by storm with his history of Masculinity – From Patriarchy to Gender Justice, translated by Nathan Bracher. In it he asks what it means to be a good man? Using examples from the past he explores the origins and structure of male dominance. He argues that it's time that men took more responsibility and fought harder for genuine equality. The political philosopher Nina Power is more circumspect about the demonisation of men, which she believes is now rampant in today's society. In What Do Men Want, Power looks at what happens when men feel beleaguered and retreat to the ‘manosphere', and she explores ways in which men and women can live together more harmoniously. The number of people living alone has increased over the last decade, but it's still a path that goes against what society expects, according to the entrepreneur and Founder of the lifestyle magazine, About Time, Angelica Malin. She became single at the beginning of lockdown and has now brought together 30 women to explore what single womanhood means in the modern age, in Unattached. Producer: Katy Hickman
Today I talked to Angelica Malin about her new book She Made It: The Toolkit for Female Founders in the Digital Age (Kogan Page, 2021). Female entrepreneurs don't tend to receive the same funding assistance as do their male counterparts, but in turn they have the advantage of often connecting more effectively with their target markets. It's their soft skills, in effect, that can see them through observes Angelica Malin. Plus one should never forget the power of having a greater purpose, a sense of mission by, for instance, by addressing a need that other, often male entrepreneurs may overlook. This guest has no fear of public speaking, whatsoever – and it shows. This is a very engaging episode as Angelica gives crisp, lively answers to questions like: why it helps to be personal and quirky in addressing journalists, how Instagram has changed in recent years, and how Taylor Swift helped make She Made It possible. Angelica Malin is the Editor-in-Chief of About Time Magazine and the U.K.'s rising voice for championing women founders and entrepreneurs. She's appeared on the BBC News and LBC Business Hour and has been featured in The Telegraph, Forbes, and Real Business. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of nine books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. (https://www.sensorylogic.com). His new book is Blah, Blah, Blah: A Snarky Guide to Office Politics. To check out his related “Dan Hill's EQ Spotlight” blog, visit https://emotionswizard.com. To open up Season 3, this week's episode is with the brilliant Angelica Malin; entrepreneur, podcaster and events host to name a few. On a pleasant Friday night before full lockdown even seemed plausible, Becki and Sophie chatted with Angelica about the importance of listening, women in business, events and so much more. * Our guest this week is Angelica Malin: Editor-in-Chief of 'About Time' Magazine, founder of 'She Started It' UK and the recent 'Unprecedented' podcast which talks to different industries about coping mechanisms during a pandemic. When we spoke to Angelica, it was a matter of days before she regretfully had to postpone her 'She Started it Live' festival due to coronavirus. Angelica always had a strong work ethic, even in university where she would work as a TV runner alongside other various part-time roles. Since then, Angelica has been dedicated to finding her authentic purpose and her 'why' in business, bringing her values to the surface and learning how to manage expectations. 'About Time' Magazine is platformed as a 'digital lifestyle for the curious Londoner' and boasts 1000s of engaged readers across the globe. But she doesn't stop there. 'She Started It' is a vessel for 'shining a spotlight on the UK's brightest female entrepreneurs' and expands into events, festivals, an online academy and a podcast. Angelica gives a wonderful insight in to the behind-the-scenes of the business world, including hiring tips, digitalisation, branding, flexible working and culture. Most prominently, how this all manifests with women in business and the topics of imposter syndrome, saying 'sorry' and diversity. A golden thread throughout the episode is the importance of listening, and how we can learn so much more if we pay attention to others and step away from our screens to establish genuine connection. A pure inspiration for women everywhere and grads as a whole, we look forward to seeing so much more from Angelica. Including and not limited to her book set to release in 2021...stay tuned! If you are anything like me, when you graduated from University, you were pretty young, naive and not 100% on where to turn next. This certainly was not the case for this week’s podcast guest. After a very brief stint with a travel and fashion magazine, Angelica knew she needed to follow her desire for creative freedom and pursue a career as an entrepreneur.Quickly spotting a gap in the market, in March 2014, Angelica took the leap and launched About Time Magazine. That digital site that offered everything it was “about time” you did in London. Personal, well-curated, and to the point the site soon took off as Angelica and her team of writers offered the very best unique options for Londoners and tourists alike. As Angelica details in the podcast, it was not easy feet. She navigated her way through the challenges many businesses owners face, such as; building a team, making some initial mistakes when approaching brands, and finding her place as a Founder.Well, overcoming those challenges paid off. About Time magazine has built a loyal audience and has a monthly readership of 85,000, alongside over 100,000 followers on social media. Taking the decision work out of what to do in your free time, it has become the go to site for time-poor Londoners.By March 2019, as About Time Magazine grew in followers and writers (with over 90 now contributing), Angelica looked to other projects. After witnessing the demand for more offline interactions, Angelica launched the About Time Academy. The Academy would be a curation of live panel events, masterclasses and talks by leading experts, entrepreneurs and leaders. After a successful series of events, Angelica has now evolved the Academy to include her passion for supporting fellow female entrepreneurs. September 2019 saw the first #shestarteditlive festival which was a one-day festival dedicated to the future of women in work.Angelica’s incredible work has not gone unnoticed, as she’s featured in major publications such as Forbes, Elle Magazine and Real Business to name a few.We obviously HAD to chat with Angelica and not only find out how she managed to become such a multi-business powerhouse, but also discover the realities behind starting a business fresh from University. Angelica offers incredible insight into the lessons she has learnt along the way (including how to be a Manager when you really just want to be mates with everyone!) and gives an insight on more incredible business ventures she has planned for the future. **Please note, we recorded this in March knowing that the episode would go out after the March She Started It Live Festival. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Angelica had to postpone the festival for the safety of everyone involved. So, there is some talk about the upcoming festivals. I hope you can understand that we have kept it in as there will be many more festivals in the future, and we are very much behind this innovative concept!*
Join me for the latest episode of The Co-Working Club podcast as I welcome Angelica Malin, Founder & Editor-in-Chief of About Time Magazine as well as the creator of She Started it Live, a festival that aims to shine a spotlight on UK's brightest female entrepreneurs ✨ In the episode I chat to Angelica all about the need for female-only events, communities and spaces in today's business world, her thoughts on 'girl boss culture' as well as the impact Coronavirus has had on her business after having to postpone the She Started it Live two day festival. I really hope you enjoy the episode
Welcome to season 2 of Period Story podcast! For the 11th episode of Period Story Podcast, I had a wonderful conversation with Angelica Malin, the editor in chief of About Time magazine and the founder of About Time Academy.Angelica talks about why she was so shocked and appalled by her first period and how poorly prepared she felt for it. She says for her, getting her period signalled the start of a horrible time of discomfort. We discussed the shame Angelica attached to her period and how talking about periods at school almost felt like a curse word. She says that in her mixed sixth-form college, women’s hormones were used against them as a way to call them out as crazy and this created a lot of stigma and shame around periods. Angelica says that the real turning point in her being comfortable talking about her period and menstrual cycle was in her last long term relationship. Have a listen to hear the very funny term her ex gave her period and how having a laugh about it made her feel much more at ease.We also talked about creating safe spaces in the workplace and the need to have more senior women to help make decisions that are made with women in mind. Angelica says that she’s created a culture in her business and team where they can talk openly about periods and how they’re feeling. Angelica says that big companies could do a lot more to make women feel comfortable at work and to encourage a happier workplace culture, like providing free tampons and pads at work and menstrual leave. We chatted about all the innovation in femtech, including brands like Moody, Ohne, Daye, Freda and Elvie that are creating high quality female focused products. Angelica talked about her experience speaking to female founders who are trying to raise investment and the trouble they have when speaking to male VCs. She says we need more women to be starting businesses and more female VC. Angelica says that it’s so important for us to define our own version of what success looks like.Angelica says that it’s important for us to be a friend to ourselves and speak to yourself as you would a friend and I completely agree! If you want to hear more from Angelica, check out her event, She Started It Live, the 13th and 14th March in London.Get in touch Tweet and IG: @periodstorypodEmail periodstorypod@gmail.comShow notes and transcripts can be found at http://www.periodstorypod.comGet in touch with Angelica: Website: https://www.abouttimemagazine.co.ukInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abouttimemag/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/abouttimemagTwitter: https://twitter.com/abouttimemag
Angelica Malin is an entrepreneur who runs a six-figure business including the About Time magazine and the She Started It Live Academy. She is also a writer and podcast host and has interviewed many successful women including Cherie Blair, Melanie Whelan and Natasha Devon. So, there is really no better person to discuss 'girlboss culture'. It's had a bit of a backlash recently. Is it outdated and patronising? Or is it time we reclaimed the term to define the viewpoint of women entrepreneurs? We also discussed how Angelica built up her business, why she offers free childcare at her conference and why she's reluctant to answer specific questions, mostly from older men, about how much she earns and how many people she employs.Hayley Millhouse from OpenMoney also shares some tips on how to start your own business!LINKSRead Angelica's article about the term girlboss here:https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/business/patronising-maybe-need-girl-boss-culture-ever/More info on the next She Started It Live weekend of events, with free childcare!https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/shestartedit-live-2020-festival-of-female-empowerment-tickets-83535497923Contact:Twitter: @honest_account_ / @jellymalinEmail: contact@anhonestaccount.co.uk
