In the last few decades, Somali nomadic lives have been endangered by environmental degradation, civil war, and displacement. Created in 1960 from a former British protectorate and an Italian colony, the country collapsed into 30 years of conflict following the overthrow of the military regime of President Siad Barre in 1991. Working with diasporic communities in Bristol, the Dhaqan Collective seek to find ways of building imaginative futures that support Somali people both in the UK and in East Africa. Jameel Jaffer is the executive director of the Knights First Amendment Institute, at Columbia University. He describes the deal that Julian had to agree to for his release. Jameel points out that the ruling will be used as a precedent in cases where a government wants to punish journalists for revealing information that they wish to keep secret- something reporters do frequently. Jameel says that a free press needs to solicit information that can inform the populace of disinformation in, for example, press releases. And journalists do it all the time to the benefit of the public. Jameel says that he worries how future administrations will use the guilty plea to control journalists, human rights defenders, and whistleblowers. From FRANCE- There is a proposal for a 2% minimum tax that would apply to about 3000 of the worlds richest people- the purpose is to balance out the fact that a great many of the wealthiest pay zero or close to zero in taxes because of shell companies and untaxed corporate stocks. Iqbal Dhaliwal, Global Executive Director of MIT's Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), and Vikrant Bhargava, Founder of Veddis Foundation, join Alberto Lidji to discuss the power of evidence, the ASPIRE partnership and the innovative Emissions Trading Scheme. We also explore how philanthropists should decide what to fund, where and how to fund; why evidence is so important in driving forward policy change; and why policy itself should be a key focus in the philanthropic space. The ASPIRE partnership (Alliance for Scaling Policy Impact through Research and Evidence) is a coalition of governments, philanthropic organizations, civil society groups, and research institutions. The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is a flexible, market-based approach to solving the air pollution problem in India. It works by capping emissions for a particular pollutant, like particulate matter, in a particular area. It allows sources of the pollutant, such as industrial plants, to trade emissions permits among themselves. The capping ensures emissions targets are met while trading allows this to be achieved cheaply. The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 900 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty. J-PAL co-founders Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, with longtime affiliate Michael Kremer, were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics for their pioneering approach to alleviating global poverty. Veddis Foundation invests in organisations working at the intersection of technology, policy, and impact.
