Richard’s story began as a child in an abusive home. He recalls this in the interview, but we will hear as he comes out of the darkness and into the light. He will talk about the value of the human spirit, the brilliance of a strong faith in God, and the powerful acceptance of the fact that homelessness is more of a relationship issue than it is a resource issue. Richard exudes success and redemption… and has learned to trust not only in others… but in himself. The music in this episode is the advent remix by Moby , and is called "Like a Motherless Child." The Homeless Podcast is proud to offer this music from https://moby.com You can also listen to Moby on Spotify, iTunes, or anywhere else that you listen to music.
Amy is a champion for the homeless. And when I say champion, I don’t mean just someone who supports those without shelter. I mean a true, unmitigated… champion. In fact, I would liken her to a patron saint of the homeless. I arrived in February to meet Amy and learn about her mission. She has not only taken on the homeless epidemic in Port Angeles… she has helped to create a family of people who can trust her, come to her with anything, and count on her for always being present in their lives. Amy manages the Program of Olympic Penninsula Community Clinic called "Rediscovery." And she has had an impact on not only the homeless, but on the entire community. She changed minds, changed hearts and changes lives. If you’d like to learn more about Amy and the amazing work she is doing in Port Angeles, please visit the Olympic Penninsula Community clinic facebook page: https://facebook.com/yourlinktoresources Amy will reach right back and answer any questions… even those that may seem trivial. You can help. You can grow. And you can acknowledge those the need acknowledgement. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be the person that someone write about someday. Rent control and loopholes in the law are a major part of the homeless epidemic. When you hear of a landlord dealing with tenants that won’t pay, consider there might be more to their story. When you hear of a tenant who might face eviction due to not paying, consider the tenant’s story. You might be surprised the harder you listen, and you just might realize that their journey is unique and can’t be lumped into a single issue. Our guest is Martin. He lives in the greater Los Angeles area and has spent time inside and outside the court system dealing with eviction notices, un-warranted shaming, and processes of developing an interest in the development of safe shelters. If you want to see your generosity go directly into the hands of the homeless, please consider becoming a Patreon subscriber for the Homeless Podcast at https://patreon.com/homelessPNW The price of one latte. "I’m diseased because I’m homeless, and it’s judgement. People just need to quit judging the problem."As Opie talks about the kids that he has helped off the streets and recalls being the best man in a wedding ceremony for one of them, I notice he gets a bit emotional. He truly is proud of this fact and it has made a major impact on him. I can’t help but wonder if he is thinking about his own children that are with his ex-wife back in Illinois. He hasn’t heard from them in two years, and I can’t imagine going that long without talking to immediate family.Follow Homeless on Facebook and Instagram:https://www.facebook.com/homelessPNWhttps://www.instagram.com/homeless_podcastGrab a pair or five of Bombas socks, and provide a pair or five for the homeless:https://bombas.com/homelesspod
Jackson has been in the park for over 2 years. He lost his wife to sickness… and remarks how he is so grateful for the time God gave me with her. He is in his upper 50’s, wears a camouflage jacket that looks old and torn, and lights up a cigarette. Jackson can’t find a job, can’t get on the list to be accepted into the tiny home village that the city built, and can’t understand where all the money has gone that "...is supposed to help us get on our feel." He understands the desperation and economic disasters that have led to so many being without homes. He has lost his greatest love to the elements, and has the look of both victim and owner of his predicament. On his face… pain.Follow The Homeless Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. What if you could just pack up a small bag and walk out the door? What if you could leave all the worries, financial struggles, career pressures, family obligations and debt behind you? Would you do it? Would you head out that door into the world and look for any way to forget the past? Or, would you take your past with you, reflecting on your life choices and your intentions to be free from responsibility? This episode about Tad, Mark and Davy explores those that CHOOSE to live on the fringe... without a home and striving to live in ultimate freedom. But then again, freedom can be a trap.
While walking along the streets of Olympia, Washington, I came across Jennifer who wanted to not only tell her story, but give a point of view that is not what the non-homeless would assume is normal. She speaks of her struggles with trying to be part of the working middle-class, dealing with psychiatric ward personnel, and her battle with prescription drugs that have been made readily available to her. What we assume is the cause is often the result. And what we assume is the result can often be the cause. Don't look away...Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
