“The starting point is, and the research questions are all framed by: 'We know it's terrible to be fat, but how terrible is it?' Not: 'What would it take to give effective healthcare to fat people?'” says Aubrey Gordon, writer of the new book You Just need to Lose Weight and 19 Other Myths About Fat People, star of the documentary Your Fat Friend, and podcaster of Maintenance Phase. And it's not just healthcare where the alignment of 'fat' with 'unhealthy' - and 'thinner' with 'healthier' - becomes problematic and often very dangerous. "I really don't think people contend with the ways in which they are sending a message to everyone around them that there is a weight limit for people that they will love." Content note: this episode contains discussions of body size, body image, weight, anti-fatness, illness including cancer, diet culture, weight loss - intentional and un - and eating disorders. And there are some category A swears. This is the second of two episodes about the word ‘fat'. In Fatlusionist part 1, Aubrey and I discuss euphemisms for fat, why people avoid saying ‘fat', what else people mean when they say ‘fat' and how it would be quite good if people said ‘fat' as just a descriptive term for ‘fat'. It should just be an accurate descriptor of my body, but the word 'fat' has shaped so much more of my life, and our society. In the next episode, Aubrey and I will discuss how the word 'fat' is often aligned with 'unhealthy', despite ample research demonstrating otherwise. Glam & Grow - Fashion, Beauty, and Lifestyle Brand Interviews
Growing up on a farm in Denmark, Kirsten was far from the world of beauty she found herself in NYC. While her upbringing was not conventional, Kirsten knew she was destined for greatness and listened to her gut from a very young age. Kirsten Kjaer Weis worked around the world for some of the most renowned fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire. As an in-demand makeup artist, Kirsten found that people were sacrificing the health of their skin by using irritating, synthetic makeup. The natural products, however, were not up to par in performance, and the luxury of the beauty experience was lost. Kirsten used her experience growing up in a natural environment and her knowledge of beauty to pursue uncharted territory in the industry, creating Kjaer Weis - a pioneer in organic, luxury beauty. Kirsten has led the brand since 2010 and it continues to thrive as one of the leading clean beauty brands.Kirsten also shares:How she pioneered the “organic” and clean beauty spaceHow the brand offers sustainable packaging optionsHow the brand has evolved over the last decadeHow the brand remains true to its ethos and avoids “trends” in beautyYou'll also hear Kirsten's advice to her younger self and what's next for Kjaer Weis.Be sure to check out Kjaer Weis at www.kjaerweis.com and on Instagram @kjaerweisWe hope you enjoy this episode and gain valuable insights into Kirsten's journey and the growth of her brand. First they were addicted to heroin, now they're addicted to *nostalgia* (but also still heroin)! Danny Boyle returns to the squalid Scottish world of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, and Begbie for T2: Trainspotting, and Scott Aukerman and Sprague (aka the Artist Formerly Known as Shaun Diston) join us to talk about this under-seen legacy sequel. How did Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor's real-life feud influence this film? Is Spud's arc in this basically just Bubbles' arc in season 5 of The Wire? Which is the better “much-later sequel starring Ewan McGregor in an iconic role” - this, or the Obi Wan Kenobi series on Disney+? Oh, you thought the Eurovision Song Contest was about songs? Or a fun international TV event that brings people together in lots of different countries? Or watching extremely vigorous dance numbers? OK, it is, but it's also about some pretty thorny language-related politics. Historian Dean Vuletic, author of Postwar Europe and the Eurovision Song Contest, discusses Eurovision's many linguistic controversies, and the ways the contest has been exploited politically - and caused political kick-offs too. This is the second instalment of a two-part Eurovisionallusionist. In the first part: a whole lot of tussling about which languages to compete in. We've been treated to our second dose of Mank in as many weeks, and we're relishing every moment of it! In BEHIND DOOR 813, a golden hankied Josh Mankiewicz brings us a case of fatal attraction, which means that no bunnies, no pregnant sister-in-laws, and no women in elevators are safe from the blind jealousy of a woman named Brenda (did you know that jealousy could be blind?). We meet the lovely and dedicated family and friends of deceased Jonathan Crews, run into a repeat Dateliner PI that we first met a decade ago, and because it's A Date with Dateline, there will be plenty of discussion on such trivialities as the inevitable disappointment of major television series' final seasons, the financial commitment of Chinese take-out and if there can ever be too much doggie B-Roll. Spoiler alert, there cannot. The truth to this mystery is all necktied up, and K and K are here to unknot it for you! Trigger Warning: This piece discusses suicide, and some people might find it disturbing. If you or someone you know is suicidal, please, contact your physician, go to your local ER, or call the suicide prevention hotline in your country. For the United States, the numbers are as follows: The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255), or message the Crisis Text Line at 741741. Both programs provide free, confidential support 24/7. NBCU Official Description: After 27-year-old Jonathan Crews dies mysteriously in his Texas apartment, his family takes matters into their own hands in an effort to find answers. Our preview of the upcoming NFL Draft continues with a look at the wide receivers. The Class of 2023 isn't expected to be filled with superstars like the last two years have been, but if you think there won't be at least a couple WRs taken in the first round, you're probably wrong! Let's learn what each wideout does well, and what kind of stars they might turn into with the right landing spots. There aren't many multilingual, multinational television shows that have been running for nearly seven decades. But what makes the Eurovision Song Contest so special to me is not the music, or the dancing, or the costumes that range from spangletastic to tear-off: no, it's the people butting heads about language. Historian Dean Vuletic, author of Postwar Europe and the Eurovision Song Contest, recounts the many changes in Eurovision's language rules, and its language hopes and dreams. This is the first of a two-part Eurovisionallusionist. In the next instalment: dictators. Protests. Boom Bang-A-Bang Ding-a-Dong Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley. "The myths, or the received wisdom, about Portuguese language in Brazil is that, of course we know we speak a very different version of the language, but this has always been explained to us as maybe perhaps a defect of sorts?" says linguist and translator Caetano Galindo, author of Latim em Pó, a history of Brazilian Portuguese. "You look deeper into things and you find you have to wrap your mind around a very different reality.” Content note: this episode discusses the enslavement of African people. Hi. There's been a lot of talk about Hollywood going woke and thus going broke. But is this really true? Is Hollywood, perhaps, pretty un-woke? Fast zombies, a deserted London, and potato-quality digital cinematography - 28 DAYS LATER proved to be a genre-defining hit for Danny Boyle after the disappointment of THE BEACH. Humorist and Blankie favorite David Rees returns to the podcast to take us back to the immediate post-9/11 period, a mood and time which this film conjures instantly. Join us for a deep dive into the zombie canon, a tangent on the famed “Young British Artists” of the 1990s, a primer on Canadian anti-capitalist band Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and a moment of disbelief when Rees discovers that Brendan Gleeson played Donald Trump in Showtime's THE COMEY RULE. Last episode, I mentioned that in London, Ontario, in 2019 a 9-year-old named Lyla Wheeler had launched a petition to rename her street, currently called Plantation Road. This episode, Lyla, now aged nearly thirteen, and her mom Kristin Daley recount the reasons why Lyla campaigned for this name change, how the neighbours reacted, what happened when the wider world heard about it, and why the street's name is still Plantation Road. I hope you will not be deterred from campaigning for different, better words. Content note: the episode contains references to enslavement of Black people and a brief description of the Canadian residential school system. This is an instalment of the Telling Other Stories series, about renaming.
