Practically, work to eliminate temptations today, so you don't have to resist them tomorrow. How do you wake up most mornings? There are obviously many ways to wake up, but most of us probably lie in bed for a moment to orient ourselves. Will it be God or will it be self? It is amazing how quickly we can make ourselves, our schedules, or our to-do lists first in our thoughts and priorities. How often do we think of ourselves first and then maybe later at some point give a passing thought to God whom we proclaim as Lord and Savior? What is foremost in your mind and heart when you wake up? Who comes first? Thankful prayer – Approach God humbly with gratitude for everything that binds us together. Present specific requests to God – Ask for peace, an end to the disagreement, unity. Focus on the good – Meditate on what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and admirable in the other. This changes our whole perspective because we see others as God sees them, and the disagreement goes out the window. The promise is that by doing these things, the God of peace will show up in the situation, surround us, and guard our hearts We are expected to pursue the excellent things of God, to know Him, to experience Him. We must get rid of anything that may hinder us from knowing Christ and resolve any conflict that may challenge our unity in a godly way. Each one of us must be steadfastly rooted, knowing that our citizenship is in heaven – we have eternal life now. And above all, we must rejoice and be content no matter the circumstance through the strength of Christ. When we do these things, the result is that the God of peace comes into our midst. If you look at the Greek—the original language of the New Testament—the word for sin is hamartanō, and it means “to be mistaken.” But the definition that most scholars use is “to miss the mark,” which refers to archery. If an arrow doesn't land in the center of a target, or the bullseye, the arrow has “missed the mark.” Sin is like that. The mark is the standard God gave us to follow. It's His perfect way. And we've all missed it according to Romans 3:23. Not one single human can claim perfection. Whether we miss the mark by a little or a lot, it's a sin. Contentment is not complacency and it is rarely learned when things are going great. The secret of contentment is not wanting or having more. It is, as Paul suggests, to actually want what you have, and to realize that God has given you all that you need. We can feel confident in Him. Jesus Christ is your Creator and your God, and He takes care of you all the time. Now that we know that our contentment, our joy, will only be complete in Jesus, we can walk through this life. The life of confession is the life of full salvation. We should confess Christ constantly. The failure to confess Christ is one of the most frequent causes of backsliding.
