Alec and Nick discuss the algorithm as a mysterious force within the production and consumption of music. Despite being used daily in our various contendings with digital platforms and culture, the term is often misunderstood. The conversation loosely defines the term as "some kind of procedure," embarking on a survey of chance (Cage), serialism (Schoenberg), Bach & Hindustani classical music, scales and modes, The League of Automatic Music Composers, Laurie Spiegel, newer electronic music, and more—as well as philosophical debates between form and process. Is an algorithm a dialectic? Do algorithms produce form, or does form precede an algorithmic process? Ultimately, the discussion draws latent comparisons to the idea of musical truth and an algorithm itself, and outlines a reversal of algorithm as a set of procedures that would create and bring music into a being, to a process that now entraps and contains it. The episode concludes with a discussion of algorithms that bring us to a contemporary visual culture of music, tying in The Velvet Underground & Warhol, Rosalía, Björk, and more.

Mothers are a gift! Thank you, mothers, for the care and support you provide to your children. Your time, encouragement, wisdom, and prayer for your kids is a blessing – whether you receive a ‘thank you' or not! May God give you peace and joy today. All of us, mothers particularly, have numerous expectations placed on us and some that we place on ourselves. These expectations develop from life experiences, from comparing ourselves to others, from all sorts of sources – and they create for us an ideal picture of what we think our lives should look like. For mothers this might include expectations of having well-behaved, well-mannered kids who are successful in their social, sport, academic, and other endeavors (and are always happy and healthy too). For others, our personal expectations may have to do with financial or relationship goals or career milestones or… the list goes on. Obadiah 1-9 (NASB) 1 The vision of Obadiah.Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom--We have heard a report from the Lord,And an envoy has been sent among the nations saying,“Arise and let us go against her for battle”--2 “Behold, I will make you small among the nations;You are greatly despised.3 “The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,You who live in the clefts of the rock,In the loftiness of your dwelling place,Who say in your heart,‘Who will bring me down to earth?'4 “Though you build high like the eagle,Though you set your nest among the stars,From there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.5 “If thieves came to you,If robbers by night--O how you will be ruined!--Would they not steal only until they had enough?If grape gatherers came to you,Would they not leave some gleanings?6  “O how Esau will be ransacked,And his hidden treasures searched out!7 “All the men allied with youWill send you forth to the border,And the men at peace with youWill deceive you and overpower you.They who eat your breadWill set an ambush for you.(There is no understanding in him.)8 “Will I not on that day,” declares the Lord,“Destroy wise men from EdomAnd understanding from the mountain of Esau?9 “Then your mighty men will be dismayed, O Teman,So that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter. Themes:- If you go against God's people, you go against God, and you will lose- If you take pride in your own power to secure yourself and your life you are going to be more than disappointed.- Israel has troubles with God right now, but that is only temporary. Outline this week:- Intro/background: A long family feud (v. 1)- God's assessment of Edom (pride comes before a fall (vv. 1-9)Coming in two weeks after Mother's Day:- God's indictment of Edom (you are your brother's keeper (vv. 10-14)- God's judgement on all haters (those who curse Israel will be cursed (vv. 15-21)

Jesus is born there in a manger since the inn is full. An angel appears to shepherds proclaiming Jesus as the “Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” A multitude of angels then appear praising God! The shepherds visit the family and report these wonderful things. After eight days, Jesus' family takes Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord at the temple. A righteous man named Simeon prophesies that Jesus would be a light even to the Gentiles. Twelve years later, the family comes to Jerusalem for the Passover. When they leave for home, Jesus stays behind and astonishes the teachers in the temple. His parents return for Him, but He explains He must be in His Father's house. Jesus returns to Nazareth with his parents after the Jerusalem event. His parents did not understand what was coming, but His mother treasured all of this in her heart. She knew how special He was. This chapter is filled with prophecy and proclamations about the greatness of Jesus. We should treasure all of this in our hearts as well. The angels appear and praise God for the “peace on earth” that Jesus would bring. In the temple, Simeon holds Jesus in his arms and says to God, “My eyes have seen Your salvation.” They believed He was God's gift to change the world. We know of His birth, His death, and His resurrection. We should openly proclaim His glory even more!  Heavenly Father, world history has two halves: before Jesus was born, and after. Thank You for blessing us to live in the days after Jesus came. So much anticipation and hope were tied to the coming of the Messiah. And by Your grace, He has come. May His worthiness dominate our hearts, and may He be “good news of great joy” every day of our lives. As a child, He wowed the teachers. His wisdom exceeds all men, including us. Help us to humbly be in awe of Him, to study His teachings, and to surrender our lives to follow Him.  Thought Questions for the Day: -       God's only Son was birthed in a barn. What does that teach you about where and how God might begin wonderful things? -       Simeon prophesied Jesus would be the Light for Jews and Gentiles. How has God had your salvation in mind since the beginning? -       In His youth, Jesus prioritized the temple over traveling with His family. How does this foreshadow the message of the kingdom?
