In this episode, Kelsi chats with theologian Mark Mattes about his new release with 1517 Publishing, Ditching the Checklist: Assurance of Salvation for Evangelicals (and Other Sinners). The two discuss the history and inner-workings of “Decision Theology” and why this theology ultimately leads people to the question, “Am I really saved?” without a helpful or true answer. In response, Mark suggests Scripture primarily presents salvation and faith in Christ as something passive (like birth) done to us. As a result, instead of looking to our works as a means of assurance, Christians can look with certainty to God's sacramental promises and efficacious word. Mark Mattes serves as Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, and previously served parishes in Gardner, Illinois, and Antigo, Wisconsin. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and an M.Div from Luther Seminary. Mattes has authored Martin Luther's Theology of Beauty: A Reappraisal and The Role of Justification in Contemporary Theology, and has co-authored Imaging the Journey, co-translated Theology the Lutheran Way by Oswald Bayer, co-edited the collected papers of Gerhard Forde, A More Radical Gospel and The Preached God, and is an Associate Editor for Lutheran Quarterly.Show Notes:Support 15171517 PodcastsThe 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts1517 on YoutubeMore from Kelsi: Kelsi Klembara Follow Kelsi on Instagram Follow Kelsi on Twitter Kelsi's Newsletter Subscribe to the Show: Apple Podcasts Spotify Youtube

SUMMARY Pastor Mitchell discusses the assurance of salvation as presented in Ephesians. He emphasizes God's eternal purpose in salvation, the legal aspect of redemption through Christ's blood, and the stability that comes from understanding one's identity as a believer. The message reassures listeners of their status as children of God, marked by the Holy Spirit, and encourages them to overcome doubts and lies from the enemy. CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction to Assurance of Salvation 02:55 God's Eternal Purpose and Human Instability 05:45 The Formula for Stability in God's Purpose 08:51 The Legal Aspect of Redemption 12:11 The Assurance of Believers 15:02 The Mark of the Believer 17:53 Overcoming Lies and Doubts 21:11 God's Purpose for Humanity 24:04 Conclusion and Call to Faith TAKEAWAYS God is dedicated to our salvation and will finish what He started. Salvation was part of God's eternal purpose, not a reaction to human failure. Believers have a status and relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Redemption is a legal transaction that requires a vicarious payment. The Holy Spirit seals believers, marking them as God's own. Assurance comes from knowing one's name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life. The devil's accusations are lies; believers are free from condemnation. God's purpose for humanity is good, providing a future and hope. Believers can overcome doubts by relying on God's promises. The blood of Jesus provides assurance and victory over sin. SOUND BITES "God is dedicated to our salvation." "The devil may be on your case." "The price has already been paid." "God has a purpose for humanity." "The blood of Jesus is against you." "The Confession is asserting that there is an assurance of salvation which will not deceive us, about which we cannot be mistaken, which goes beyond mere probability. This should reassure the one who says, “I want to have assurance, but I am so fearful of being mistaken and deceiving myself.” There is an assurance of salvation which you may have, which will not deceive you, which is infallible."
