What if the scariest thoughts in your head mean nothing at all? William Schultz spent ten years trapped inside obsessive compulsive disorder. It got so bad he became afraid of his own shadow, checking it every time he flipped a light switch. Then he made one brave decision that put him in remission within two months. No drugs. No endless analysis. Today he's a psychotherapist in St. Paul, president of OCD Twin Cities, and the expert who pushed the International OCD Foundation to revise its own treatment guidelines in 2025.In this conversation, Dr. Roger McFillin and William expose why standard mental health care makes OCD worse. They reveal what actually frees people in an in depth conversation. If you've ever been attacked by a thought you couldn't turn off, this episode is your way out.
You have found ways to make your wound productive. You turned the thing that broke you into the engine that drives you — and somewhere along the way, you started calling that a superpower. You are high-functioning and deeply exhausted, achieving without arriving, performing your way through life while something underneath quietly starves. Patrick Lencioni is the founder of The Table Group and the author behind some of the most influential business books of the last twenty years, including The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. But this conversation goes somewhere his work rarely takes him. Patrick opens up about his own diagnosis with OCD — the fear-driven, control-seeking, maniacal cycle of obsession and compulsion — and the childhood wounds that fed it for decades before anyone named what was happening. He and Christopher go deep on the real definition of OCD, its subtypes, including scrupulosity, and the specific way anxiety disorders attach themselves to the things of God and masquerade as faith. They also walk through what the dark night of the soul actually strips from a person — and why that stripping is not punishment but surgery. And Patrick makes the case for something the culture cannot stomach: that refusing to speak truth to someone you love is not kindness. It is cruelty wearing a gentler name. If you have been performing your faith without living it, checking instead of trusting, arranging your world in exchange for a sense of safety that never quite holds, this conversation is going to name something you have been carrying for a long time. Patrick is not talking from a safe distance. He is still at work. So is Christopher. And what they both know now is that the wound does not become anything worth having until surrender has gone all the way down. That kind of surrender is not passive. It is the hardest thing a person ever does. This conversation will ask you to begin it. Guest Bio Patrick Lencioni is the founder and president of The Table Group, a firm dedicated to helping leaders build healthy organizations, and the author of 10 books on leadership and teamwork, with over 3 million copies sold worldwide. His best-known work, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, has become one of the most widely used business texts in the world, applied by organizations ranging from the Fortune 500 to the military to the local church. He lives and works out of the Franklin, Tennessee area. What if the religious doubt, the obsessive confessing, the fear of receiving communion — isn't a sign of weak faith, but actually reveals how deeply you love God? In this episode, Catholic therapist Adam Cross, LMFT (#116623) joins Amber from the Catholic Counseling Institute for a wide-ranging conversation on scrupulosity — one of the most painful and misunderstood struggles in Catholic life. Together they unpack the clinical reality that scrupulosity is rooted in anxiety and OCD, not poor faith — and they share what actually helps people heal, from ERP therapy and parts work, to the role of medication, spiritual direction, and a healthy God image. Topics covered: What scrupulosity is (and isn't) — theologically and clinically Intrusive thoughts: the difference between temptation and desire The lifeboat analogy: when coping strategies become obstacles ERP for scrupulosity: sitting with uncertainty instead of seeking certainty Reassurance seeking — and what families can say instead SSRIs, GeneSight testing, and the Church's view on medication Nervous system regulation and experiencing God's peace Healing is possible. We explain that these thoughts are common, especially when the nervous system is anxious or overstimulated, and that the distress they cause does not mean they reflect who we are.We describe how intrusive thoughts can become repetitive when fear makes the brain treat them as important. This can lead to a loop of hypervigilance, self-monitoring, and more fear. We compare this to a survival response that stays active long after the original alarm has passed. We then offer three steps for responding differently. First, we contain the thought instead of becoming fused with it, and we ask for actual evidence rather than reacting to fear. We note that a thought is not an intention, a prophecy, or an identity.Second, we allow the physical sensations to rise and fall without adding panic. We name what is happening in the body, such as adrenaline or tightness, and remind ourselves that discomfort does not mean danger.Third, we return to the present moment again and again through grounding and mindfulness. We mention simple practices like noticing the feet, breathing, sounds, textures, and nearby surroundings, and we emphasize that repeated returning is practice, not failure.#AnxietyCoachesPodcast #GinaRyan #IntrusiveThoughts #AnxietyRelief #AnxietySupport #NervousSystemRegulation #NervousSystemHealing #AnxietyLoop #Overthinking #Catastrophizing #Hypervigilance #Mindfulness #GroundingTechniques #PresentMoment #SelfCompassion #MentalHealthMatters #AnxietyRecovery #CalmYourMind #InnerPeace #StressRelief #AdrenalineRush #MindsetShift #AnxietyTips #MentalWellness #HealYourAnxiety #Overwhelmed #BreakTheCycle #SelfKindness #EmotionalRegulation #MindfulLiving #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: If you’ve ever felt ambushed by intrusive thoughts, unwanted mental spirals, or the kind of anxious loops that hijack your peace, you’re not alone—and you’re not powerless. In this episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective, we’re diving into the intersection of biblical truth and brain science, exploring how God designed your mind, why intrusive thoughts show up, and how to interrupt them with evidence-based strategies and Scripture-anchored truth. Whether you struggle with anxiety, guilt, catastrophizing, or “what-if” thinking, you’ll learn practical, hope-filled tools to renew your mind, reclaim your thought life, and experience the calm your soul has been craving. In honor of mental health awareness month, today we’re going to talk about How to Manage Intrusive Thoughts Through Biblical Truth & Brain Science. Quotables from the episode: You are not at the mercy of your mind. A thought is not a fact. A thought is not a sin. A thought is not your identity. A thought is not your destiny. The amygdala can’t tell the difference between a genuine threat, a hypothetical threat, or a lie masquerading as danger. Romans 12:2 isn’t metaphor, it’s biology: ‘Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ You can’t control the first thought, but you can control the next one. Intrusive thoughts thrive in internal chaos; they shrink in stillness. This is just a thought, not a truth, and not a command. You cannot ‘stop thinking’ your way out of intrusive thoughts; you must redirect them. When the body calms down, the amygdala shuts off, and intrusive thoughts lose their volume. You are not losing your mind. You are learning to renew it. Scripture References: Romans 12:2 “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 “Take every thought captive.” Colossians 3:2 “Set your mind on things above.” Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.” Philippians 4:8 “Whatever is true… think about such things.” Romans 8:6 “The mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace” Psalm 46:1 “God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Romans 8:1 “There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you.” 1 John 4:18 “Perfect love casts out fear.” Matthew 6:34 “Do not worry about tomorrow.” Philippians 1:6 “He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion.” Recommended Resources: Free Stress-Response Personality Assessment Sacred Scars: Resting in God’s Promise That Your Past Is Not Wasted by Dr. Michelle Bengtson The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner AWSA 2024 Golden Scroll Christian Living Book of the Year and the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Christian Living and Non-Fiction categories YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises from God to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, AWSA Member of the Year, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Devotional category, the 2023 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 1 YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 2 Revive & Thrive Women’s Online Conference Revive & Thrive Summit 2 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 1 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 2 Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2020 Best Christian Living Book First Place, the first place winner for the Best Christian Living Book, the 2020 Carolina Christian Writer’s Conference Contest winner for nonfiction, and winner of the 2021 Christian Literary Award’s Reader’s Choice Award in all four categories for which it was nominated (Non-Fiction Victorious Living, Christian Living Day By Day, Inspirational Breaking Free and Testimonial Justified by Grace categories.) What are intrusive thoughts—and what are you supposed to do with them as a writer? In this episode of the podcast, Jacob Krueger explores intrusive thoughts not as a psychological obstacle, but as a powerful creative tool. Because the real challenge of writing isn't eliminating distraction—it's learning how to transform what interrupts you into inspiration. Drawing on the film and play versions of Amadeus, Jake shows how Peter Shaffer externalized his own competing inner voices into two unforgettable characters: Salieri, the embodiment of self-doubt, and Mozart, the expression of divine creative impulse. The result is not just great drama—but a blueprint for turning internal conflict into structure, character, and change.
In this Wednesday Live Q&A, I talk through struggles around unbelief, anxiety, and salvation, including questions like, “If my anxiety comes from unbelief, am I in constant sin?” as well as, “How do I repent of sins that feel impossible to fix right away?” I also address questions about feeling like you're losing your mind: […]
If you've been dealing with relentless intrusive thoughts — about harm, sexuality, religion, or relationships — and every attempt to fight them has made things worse, this episode is for you. Pure OCD (also called Pure O or purely obsessional OCD) is one of the most misunderstood presentations of OCD, and in this video, Matt Codde, LCSW, sets the record straight. Here's the truth: Pure O is a myth. There is no form of OCD without compulsions — because the compulsions in Pure O are mental. Ruminating, analyzing, mentally reviewing, thought-blocking, and seeking reassurance are all compulsions. They feed the loop just as powerfully as any physical behavior. If this sounds like you — or someone you love — understanding this one reframe changes everything.Matt walks through the common subtypes — harm OCD, sexual intrusive thoughts, religious/scrupulosity OCD, relationship OCD, and health anxiety — and explains why people with Pure O so often end up looking in the wrong place for help. Most importantly, he outlines the recovery path: identifying the mental compulsions, applying the AAA Response, and ascending out of the fear loop into genuine freedom.

After becoming a parent, Mandy started experiencing sudden, unwanted flashes of scary “what if” moments involving her kids — thoughts she never had before. In this episode of The Wake Up Call, the crew talks honestly about why our brains do this, why it’s incredibly common for parents, and what those intrusive thoughts actually mean. With reassurance, perspective, and a little humor, this conversation reminds parents they’re not broken, bad, or alone — sometimes your brain is just trying to protect you and doing a terrible job at calming down.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode of Breaking the Rules, we do something a little different — we guide you through a live experiential exercise used in therapy to demonstrate how Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) actually feels in the moment.Using a simple jelly bean (or Mentos), we walk through an exercise that highlights one of the most important lessons in OCD treatment: the urge to escape discomfort can be powerful, but it can also be tolerated.Through this exercise, we explore how quickly the mind and body react to discomfort, how intrusive thoughts and urges show up, and how reconnecting with meaning and values can shift our relationship with those experiences.Experiential exercises like this are commonly used in ACT, DBT, and ERP therapy because they allow people to learn through doing, rather than just talking about the skills intellectually. In this episode we discuss:What experiential exercises are and why they are powerful in therapyWhy learning skills during calm moments is different from using them during triggersThe Mentos (or jelly bean) exercise used to simulate urge surfing and response preventionWhat happens in the mind and body when discomfort risesIntrusive thoughts, urges, and the instinct to escape discomfortThe role of meaning and values in increasing distress toleranceWhy acceptance changes our relationship to discomfort, not the discomfort itselfHow clinicians can use this exercise with clients, families, and teen group.

n this episode, I teach you a simple but powerful shift called cognitive defusion, a way to create space between you and your intrusive thoughts. So often, thoughts can feel urgent, dangerous, or completely true, like warnings you have to act on. But just because a thought feels real doesn't mean it is.

In this episode, we talk about one of the most painful parts of OCD and anxiety: the shame that comes from intrusive thoughts. Many people experience sudden thoughts that are violent, sexual, blasphemous, or completely against their values—and when they do, they often assume it must mean something terrible about them.
Harm OCD and harmful intrusive thoughts can feel terrifying — especially when your mind produces violent or disturbing thoughts that feel completely against who you are.In this episode of The Restored Minds Show, licensed therapist Matt Codde, LCSW explains Harm OCD and harmful intrusive thoughts, what they really mean, and why having these thoughts does not make you a dangerous person. If you've ever wondered why these intrusive thoughts appear and why trying to control or analyze them only makes them worse, this episode will help you understand the real mechanism behind the OCD loop.Rather than focusing on eliminating thoughts, Matt explains why recovery from Harm OCD comes from changing how you respond to thoughts, emotions, and compulsions.
You've been fighting your intrusive thoughts and yet they keep coming back, often stronger than before. But there are some reasons why these thoughts seem to get worse of even stronger. Once we understand that, everything can beging changing. I'm going to show you why your intrusive thoughts behave exactly like trolls and why every […]

Our dialogue delves into the intricacies of anxiety and the underlying emotions that often fuel it. I invite listeners to reflect on their relationship with anxiety and how to discern the subtle messages it communicates.A significant focus of our discussion is the Hidden Emotion Model—a technique I learned and refined during my training that unveils the repressed feelings driving anxiety. Dr. Burns eloquently explains how individuals, often conscientious and "nice," suppress emotions like fear, anger, and disappointment, which leads to heightened anxiety. By recognizing and articulating these hidden emotions, individuals can often alleviate their anxiety significantly. Dr. Burns shares a compelling vignette involving a man struggling with panic attacks after receiving unexpected news about parenthood. This example illustrates the necessity of acknowledging uncomfortable emotions to pave the way for healing. Our conversation also touches on the societal stigmas surrounding emotional expression, particularly for those who identify as "nice" people. Dr. Burns and I explore how mental health diagnostics can inadvertently contribute to feelings of shame and inadequacy among patients. It's a powerful reminder that many who battle anxiety face not only internal struggles but external societal pressures that may dictate how they should feel or behave.#Anxiety, #PanicAttacks, #MentalHealth, #CBT, #DrDavidBurns, #AnxietyCoachesPodcast, #FeelingGood, #FeelingGreat, #Psychology, #Mindfulness, #SelfHelp, #Recovery, #Wellness, #Healing, #StressRelief, #InnerPeace, #MentalWellness, #SelfCare, #Therapy, #Coaching, #EmotionalIntelligence, #NervousSystem, #OvercomingAnxiety, #PanicDisorder, #SocialAnxiety, #MentalHealthAwareness, #EndTheStigma, #GrowthMindset, #Authenticity, #Boundaries, #SelfLove, #IntrusiveThoughts, #OCD, #HealthAnxiety, #MindfulLiving, #Breathwork, #Meditation, #Zen, #Spirituality, #PersonalGrowth, #Resilience, #Empowerment, #HealthyMind, #AnxietyRelief, #StressManagement, #Psychotherapy, #Counseling, #WellnessJourney, #LifeCoaching, #MentalHealthMatters, #AnxietySupportSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Look, we're not trying to freak you out, but the ‘company' is going through some changes. We're 0 for 1 with our intrusive thoughts, and suddenly this episode turns into a loooong look in the mirror. Katy Bellotte isn't just back for her FOURTH appearance, she's clocking in as this week's substitute!! Thirty, flirty, and officially realizing she's still got THIRTY more years until she peaks (maybe then she'll get her man on the street interview).
