Little Gain is an artist interview and live-performance podcast hosted by Matthew Ryan Robinson, a motivational speaker, and music fanatic.
Jesse Cohen joins us over zoom thanks to the pandemic and hundreds of miles between us. Thanks to technology Jesse was able to pre-record three tracks just for the show and we will sit down and talk about the meanings and the inspirations and what its like to create art and light out of the darkness that has been getting through the pandemic. Track one: The ReaperTrack Two: Isolation BalladTrack Three: Moth to the FlameFor part of the Pandemic Jesse resided in Brooklyn more or less, busking on the subway while writing and releasing several albums spanning multiple genres. He escaped the big city and made his way to Nashville. Saul stopped by the studio to share his new Ukulele skills and to catch up on 20 years of time apart but oh so close. Late nights in Deep Ellum we were at different venues doing our music thing on the same nights and didn't even know it. We rummage around the old memory box about high-school and the Dallas music scene over the years. We touch on what it was like to be a medical tech at the start of the pandemic and seeing the front lines of hospital overcrowding. We get real with our pain of loss from family and friends over the years and how music can heal those wounds.you can reach Saul on his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/saul.stuhldreher.5 and to follow along as he works on many new upcoming projects. Strong Work! has hopped states every couple years until landing deep in the heart of Texas 8-ish years ago. Ethan stops by the studio to jam out 3 fresh and hot tracks for us to dive into. 1. The $#!+2. Grow Up3. In My MindWe also discuss his various synergized efforts in the music scene with Mizer (a recording studio), Not Normal Productions (a music video production, event planner, and screen printing company). He also took time to fawn over his amazing Gretsch Hollow-body guitar... and his wife. We also discuss the method to his madness, collaboration, patience and strong work. Strong Work! is a genreless band from Denton, Texas. The Heligoats SUPER-EPISODE! 20+ songs from The Heligoats, Hemora & the glass band, Hungry Mountain and even a couple Troubled Hubble covers and a bunch of joking around! The guys put together a 10 year anniversary live album and video recording show for the goodness gracious album and invited a hand full of people to attend and celebrate, I drove from Dallas to Batavia (15 hours) and recorded the warm up jam the night before, and drank long island ice teas in a can and a number of Pabst Blue Ribbons. We joke around and they play some tunes. Then I drove back to Dallas (another 15 hours) I present this to you in its raw format and I invite you to listen like a fly on the wall. The Heligoats started in 1999 as the primary songwriting outlet for Chris Otepka. Featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk as the 100th performer, Chris has also accumulated time and acclaim as a member of Troubled Hubble (Lookout! Records), Hemhora & The Glass Band as well as a brief stint in Clem Snide. The Heligoats have teamed with the Glass Band for their latest release and are on tour playing songs spanning the past ten years.Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5kB1bWhUVqRmZPDMHyYFYzSupport the band on Bandcamp: https://theheligoats.bandcamp.com/musicSee the NPR Tiny Desk Concert: https://www.npr.org/2010/12/15/131963244/the-heligoats-tiny-desk-concertSupport the show (https://www.littlegainpodcast.com/donate)

Photo provided by Bret CrowBret Crow is a Denton, Tx. based artist that is one of the more versatile performers to come from that particularly eclectic and creative scene. At the core a 5 string Bass player, he not only is able to use it and an effects / loop pedal to perform as a one-man band a'la "The Bret Crow Show". He is also a staple bassist for several local bands including Bone Doggie and the Hickory Street Hellraisers, Puddin' Taine and Slice Fury.Bret's irreverent and comedic stylings include the use of effects, echoes, beatboxing and loops created on the fly. Combining his excellent bass skills and unique singing voice with these accouterments allows him to craft a distinct sound. That sound meshes perfectly with his catalog of silly, funny and parody songs that mainly comprise his solo work,. This solo work (showcased in his debut album "The Bret Crow Show") runs the gamut from songs that are engaging, sing-along pieces like "i'm Afraid of the Boogeyman" and "Peanut Butter and Jelly Time" to the somewhat sad and hypnotic "You Don't Know Me".Bass is not Bret's only gig however, as he is an accomplished player of the guitar, keyboard, double bass, as well as kazoo and slide whistle when appropriate. His opportunities to bring all these to the fore are legion as Bret is one of the hardest working musicians around. He performs a weekly Pre Show to Plano's Open Stage Variety Show, Hosts and MC's a weekly Open Mic at Mable Peabody's in Denton and regularly jams with the plethora of bands that are glad to have him slapping and popping his bass licks as a part of their mix.As a one-man show or part of an ensemble Bret brings the comedy / rock / funk sound he is famous for, improv pop references and parodies are usually thrown in for the price of admission.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thebretcrowshowEmail: thebretcrowshow@gmail.comSupport the show (https://www.littlegainpodcast.com/donate)Support the show (https://www.littlegainpodcast.com/donate)
