【聊了什么The What】 小杨、小蓝与友台残言片语主播八如一起聊了两部关于残障与照护的电影：刘玉玲主演的《罗丝密》(Rosemead) 与圣丹斯今年新出的口碑佳作《带我回家》(Take Me Home)。 讲述残障者的故事，很难绕过照护者的故事，也很容易陷入苦大仇深的叙事漩涡；毕竟社会给残障者的资源那么少，而在资源的匮乏中能讲出的故事常常是《罗丝密》中描绘出的毁灭性的绝路。而《带我回家》则通过一种模糊虚构与真实的即兴手段，让残障演员在故事中展现全新的创作方式。或许这种匮乏并不是必须的，或许优绩主义的亚裔家庭不一定要把残障视为绝路，或许电影人能给出的激进的想象能够推动我们重塑现实，毕竟生而为人我们终将是脆弱的。 In this episode we are joined by Baru from our friend at 残言片语 to discuss two films about disability and caregiving: Rosemead, starring Lucy Liu, and Take Me Home, a critically acclaimed new Sundance film. When telling stories about disabled people, it is hard to avoid telling the stories of caregivers as well. It is also easy to fall into a heavy, tragic narrative spiral. After all, society offers so few resources to disabled people, and from within that scarcity, the kinds of stories that emerge often look like the devastating dead end portrayed in Rosemead. Take Me Home, by contrast, uses an improvisational approach that blurs fiction and reality, allowing disabled actors to reveal a wholly different creative mode within the film itself. Perhaps this scarcity is not inevitable. Perhaps, in high-achieving Asian families, disability does not have to be treated as a dead end. Akron Civic Assembly to propose housing solutions to city officials Monday on the "Sound of Ideas," we'll discuss a new effort to tackle housing challenges in Akron that is giving residents the decision-making power. Unify America, a national nonprofit focused on problem-solving and civic engagement, has created Northeast Ohio's first-ever civic assembly, called Unify Akron. The inaugural group of 65 residents was selected by a random lottery last week. From now until May, the delegates will meet to review research, hear from experts and share their own experiences before voting on potential solutions. Those recommendations will be presented to Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, city council and other elected officials. Organizers say the goal of the program is to encourage collaboration among residents and inspire leaders to consider implementing fresh ideas. That sobering reality is part of what continues to drive the Take Me Home program in Summit County — a joint effort between the Prosecutor's Office and the Sheriff's Office. Later in the hour, we'll discuss how this program is helping save lives and reunite missing individuals with their loved ones. Launched in 2007, the program created a database where parents and caregivers can voluntarily submit information to law enforcement about individuals with communication difficulties - with the goal of bringing those in danger home safely. Last month, the program expanded to include individuals living with mental health conditions, behavioral disorders and substance use disorders. That's not all that surprising when you look at industry trends, and the razor thin margins that restaurants run on, with the average lifespan of a restaurant being less than10 years. When a local restaurant makes it to 15 years, 20 years or longer, that's something special. That's the case with Mallorca, which opened nearly 30 years ago in Downtown Cleveland. That establishment specializes in Spanish and Portuguese food and was just nominated by the James Beard Foundation. To end the hour, we're joined by Laurie Torres, owner of Mallorca. Torres was recently interviewed by Cleveland Magazine as part of their "Word of Mouth" series, and joins "The Menu" today. Driving away from West Virginia, Colleen realized she no longer needs perfect conditions to feel like herself—because that version of her now lives within her. She explores how emotions are echoes of the past, and how clinging to them corrodes self-trust. Through the story of her sister-in-law Laura, she shares how denying your truth disconnects you from your voice—and how letting it surface is what makes healing possible.

After years of trying to fix her life by rearranging circumstances, Colleen finally stopped—and turned inward. This is the story of how admitting “I'm not okay” became the first real act of self-trust. Instead of solving her life, she began tending to herself like someone worth saving, and discovered that clarity comes from action, not overthinking.

In this continuation, Colleen shares how West Virginia shifted her in ways she didn't see coming. She found herself in a community where image didn't matter, where people belonged by being present, not by performing. That freedom to be—messy hair, bare face, imperfect and real—awakened something deeper: the possibility of self-trust. The relationships and experiences from that time became a compass she carried forward. Even as life evolved, that season revealed what authenticity feels like, and how quickly it disappears when we chase approval instead of honoring ourselves.  

In this episode, Colleen begins a five-part mini-series by reflecting on a season of life where everything looked perfect on the outside—four children, big career moves, and daily discipline to name a few. But on the inside she was hollow, disconnected, and coping in ways that kept her stuck. The move to West Virginia became more than a change of scenery; it became a field trip into herself. It was here she first began to see the difference between living to perform and learning to be. What felt like upheaval at the time now stands out as a turning point—the beginning of finding her own voice beneath the roles and responsibilities.
