What if the wisdom you need to make better decisions is not only in your mind, but also in your gut, your heart, and the quiet intelligence of your body?In a world that rewards constant achievement, rational thinking, and chasing the next goal, many people understand how life works but still struggle to feel fulfilled, peaceful, or truly aligned. This week, we're talking with Swedish singer-songwriter José González who just released his fifth album Against the Dying of the Light. He's currently on tour in North America and our conversation happened the day before it started in Boston. We discuss his new album and its somewhat apocalyptic themes, including AI which you'll learn he has a more complicated relationship with than some do. We also talk about his use of distortion in his mostly acoustic music and how that will play out on this current tour which is at rock clubs and not the seated theaters of his last few tours. He also tells us how his punk and post-hardcore youth continues to influence his music, what he listens to when he runs, the acclaimed video for his cover of The Knife's "Heartbeats" and how he may be doing more covers in the future, and more. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein photo: Ellika Henriksson

Live from the shores of Devils Lake, Scott Hennen hosts a packed edition of What's On Your Mind at the Landowners Association of North Dakota annual meeting. The episode explores the decades-long struggle between local farmers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over land easements, featuring a passionate call to action from Senator Kevin Cramer. The conversation then shifts from the soil to the skies as we preview a major national security announcement at the Grand Forks Air Force Base regarding "Counter Drone" technology. Finally, we look toward the future of the region's youth with University of North Dakota senior Max Eriksrud, who is organizing a massive faith-based revival at the Chester Fritz Auditorium. From the front lines of property rights to the cutting edge of military tech and spiritual renewal, this episode covers the heart and soul of the 701. Standout Moments [12:69] The Easement War Senator Kevin Cramer pulls no punches while discussing the "gross injustice" landowners face from federal bureaucrats regarding decades-old wetland easements. He explains why he believes the current legal landscape offers farmers their "last best shot" at winning back their property rights. [13:34] The "Counter Drone" Frontier A deep dive into the Point Defense Battle Lab at Grand Forks Air Force Base. Scott and Kevin discuss the "asymmetric" problem of using million-dollar missiles to take out $500 "suicide drones" and how North Dakota is leading the mission to flip that script. [14:48] Detecting a Heartbeat from Space In a stunning revelation of modern military capabilities, the team discusses how search-and-rescue teams used specialized technology to locate a downed pilot in the Iranian mountains by literally detecting his heartbeat from the air. [14:69] The 701 Revival UND senior Maxwell Eriksrud joins the show to discuss "701 Revival," a youth-led movement aiming to bring community and faith back to the center of campus life. He shares his personal journey from an 18-year-old freshman to a student leader on the State Board of Higher Education. [17:19] Budget Hawks and Right-Sizing Retired Air Force Major Dave Hughes, running for Minnesota's 7th District, lays out a bold plan to balance the federal budget. His strategy includes abolishing five major U.S. departments—including Energy and Education—to curb the $2 trillion annual deficit. [18:67] Grains, China, and the Weather David Spickler of Lighthouse Commodities gives a "weather-weather" update, warning North Dakota farmers about a narrow planting…

Our guest this week is José González. The Swedish folk singer-songwriter broke through with his 2003 debut Veneer and the iconic “Heartbeats,” going on to carve out a unique space in modern folk through his delicate guitar work and introspective songwriting. Across his career, he's released five albums, amassed over a billion streams, and was inducted into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame in 2024. Last week, he returned with his latest record Against the Dying of the Light, a reflective album exploring the ideologies shaping our world. On today's episode, we chat with José about the themes behind the record, his approach to complex songwriting, the evolution of the industry, and his long-standing connection with Australian audiences.José González: Instagram / Spotify / WebsiteVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.
"You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ."Jesus had a physical heart like we all do. “On average 5,000 times each hour” and “Each beat upheld by the hand of his Father, like each beat of your heart.” But this particular heart started beating again! Do you think it was instantly, or did the Father slowly wake him up?

Ocean microbes quietly power the planet. In this episode, we explore the microscopic organisms that regulate Earth's climate, produce much of the oxygen we breathe, and move enormous amounts of carbon through the ocean every day. These invisible life forms are not just background players in the ocean system; they are central to how the planet works. Synthetic biology is now pushing this idea even further. Dr. José Ángel Moreno-Cabezuelo, a synthetic biologist working in Oxford, is engineering ancient microorganisms called cyanobacteria to capture carbon dioxide using sunlight and biology. His work shows how living systems could become part of the climate solutions we desperately need. Science communication is another major theme of this conversation. After years working inside the scientific system, Dr. Moreno-Cabezuelo began questioning why so much scientific knowledge fails to connect with society. Through his book Heartbeats of Consciousness, he explores the intersection of biology, neuroscience, philosophy, and the human experience, asking a powerful question: if science understands life so well, why does it still struggle to help us understand how to live it? Listen to learn how microbes shape our planet, how biotechnology may help tackle climate change, and why clarity in science might be one of the most important tools we have for protecting the ocean. José Gonzáles makes quiet music full of loud ideas. I sat down with him in person to trace his journey from playing in hardcore punk bands to the intimate arpeggios that turned Veneer and Heartbeats into global touchstones. Jose opens up about writing “humble accusations,” using minimal sound to deliver maximal ideas, and how a scientist's method—shaped by his biochemistry background—helps him build tension, release, and meaning inside quiet music. It all gets a bit Dawkins: Jose unpacks meme complexes, the cultural building blocks that replicate from brain to brain, and shows how his work recombines influences from Latin America, Sweden, and shelves of philosophy and science audiobooks. We explore the thread that runs from early relationship sketches to pointed critiques of dogma, moral relativism, and “doomsday dudes,” all while keeping the songs spacious enough to live at dinner tables and in headphones after midnight. We talk about how on his new album – Against the Dying Light, José connects Enlightenment values—reason, empiricism, individual liberty—to today's urgent questions around AI, engineered risks, and human flourishing. He celebrates breakthroughs like AlphaFold while calling for alignment, transparency, and calm public reasoning. The result is a rare balance: optimism without naivety, warning without hysteria, and art that invites you to think without telling you what to think.I've re-activated the show's Substack newsletter. What turns a house into a story you can hold? In this recap episode, we look back at our episode with Jenny Marrs for a warm, funny, and honest look at how a five-year writing journey became a memoir stitched from rooms, rituals, and the small moments that define family. Instead of design rules and trends, Jenny frames each chapter around a lived memory; the living room on Christmas morning, the spaces that carry laughter, mess, and meaning, creating a keepsake her kids can open years from now.Pulling back the curtain on the other half of her year: filming a six-episode renovation in Italy. The postcard image cracked under real pressure, snow in Tuscany, twelve-hour days, and back-and-forth flights that turned a dream into a test of endurance. We trade stories about logistics gone sideways, including a rental car ticket that landed on the wrong desk, and laugh through the kind of travel chaos that becomes legend among friends.Threaded through the hustle is a reminder of why any of it matters. A bearded friend recognized at a gas station, a viewer's daughter in a wheelchair who loves the show, and a quick decision to fly home early to surprise her. That small act reframes the entire season: work is the vehicle, people are the destination. If you've ever wondered how to capture your family's history, balance ambition with presence, or turn everyday spaces into memory engines, this conversation will meet you where you live, literally. If the story moves you, subscribe, share this episode with someone who loves their home, and leave a review with your favorite room memory so we can feature it next time. And go back and watch the full episode: Ep. 4 - Heartbeats and Homecomings: Jenny Marrs on Weaving Memories into Design

Sierra Leone has deep reserves of resilience, and an ability to come together and overcome great obstacles embedded in its culture. To provide the kind of history that is all too often overlooked when reporting on current events on the African continent, we are encoring this Hip Deep episode, which explores the nation's past. When Sierra Leone gained independence in 1961, Freetown swayed to the beguiling, breezy lilt of palm wine guitar and danced to the funky pop of Geraldo Pino and the Heartbeats. Once a center of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Sierra Leone became an improbable amalgamation of indigenous peoples and repatriated Africans freed from slavery. Thirty years of political and economic disintegration led to a horrific civil war that claimed tens of thousands of victims and created a generation of maimed bodies and ruined lives between 1991 and 2002. A significant portion of the violence was internal, with community members and sometimes children taking up arms against each other. Following the conflict, efforts to restore peace included truth and reconciliation programs aimed at strengthening social ties. This episode profiles the inspiring story of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, a band formed in war-era refugee camps in Guinea. The band played a key role in giving citizens the courage to return home, and now, along with other young musicians in Freetown, attempt to pick up where others left off before the war. Produced by Simon Rentner with Wills Glasspiegel. APWW PGM #552 Originally broadcast in 2008

Air Week: January 12-18, 2026 George Goldner, Pt. 1 – Rama Records We begin a multi-part series on record man, George Goldner. He is said to have had the “golden ear” for hit records and songwriter Jerry Leiber even complimented his talent for picking hit songs by saying that Goldner had, “the musical taste of a fourteen-year-old-girl.” Born to Jewish immigrants in 1919, Goldner’s first love was Latino dance music and he began his career by opening night clubs and starting Tico Records, a Latino label in 1948. By 1953, he was interested in Rhythm & Blues and began releasing records under the Rama subsidiary. This week, we’ll take a close look at Goldner’s first R&B label, which helped put Rock n’ Roll on the musical map with the 1953 smash, “Gee,” by New York vocal group, The Crows. “Gee” crossed over to a very respectable #14 on the pop chart and just might be the first Rock n’ Roll hit by a Rock n’ Roll group. From there, Goldner signed The Wrens, The Valentines, The Joytones, The Heartbeats, The Harptones and other NY groups that are now considered vocal group royalty. His house band was led by the tenor great, Jimmy Wright, who put his sax stamp on all these classic records for Goldner’s various labels. Next week in part 2, Matt The Cat will focus on Gee Records as we continue our look into the ground-breaking labels of George Goldner. LISTEN BELOW

Ze maakte voorstellingen als ‘This is not a dance' en ‘Songs for no one', waarvoor ze in 2021 de BNG Theaterprijs in ontvangst nam.

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about the idea that “Everything old is new again” and why that feels especially true for me as we head into 2026.I share where this phrase originally comes from and how it still shows up all around us, from old-fashioned baby names and vinyl records - to the way trends, styles, and even problems seem to circle back to current times but with a fresh twist.I explore how revisiting the past with new eyes, context, and appreciation can be such a powerful source of inspiration, creativity, and healing.I also let you in on something new-old in my own life that I'm wicked excited about… I'm returning to having my own space again in Concord, New Hampshire! YAY!After years of focusing more on Spiritual Mentoring and Integrative Coaching, I'm boomeranging back in an even bigger way to my longtime roots in Yoga and Thai Yoga bodywork / Assisted Stretching.I talk about how good it feels to create a warm, welcoming space again and to reconnect with the practices that have sustained me for decades - only now with deeper awareness, devotion, and purpose. From there, I dive into rituals, lineage, and devotion, (and share a story about my Nana) and how those old ways are a part of what I'm longing for more of now: slowness, intention, safety, and human connection - in a world that's so busy-pants fast, digital, and often disconnected.I name what I'm craving (and what I suspect a lot of us are craving) heading into the new year: small, cozy rooms, micro-communities, calm, authentic leadership, embodiment over performance, and spaces where people know your name. In this episode of Conversing Over Drinks, Cedric sits down with Nathan Williams to share a powerful story of love, resilience, and survival. At just 32 years old, Nathan was diagnosed with end-stage congestive heart failure after experiencing unexpected symptoms during an ordinary day—news that changed his life and his marriage overnight.Nathan opens up about the shock of hearing he would need a heart transplant, the emotional toll of the diagnosis, and the day-to-day challenges of navigating serious illness. He and his wife, Crystal, reflect on how faith, mental strength, and unwavering support helped them endure their darkest moments and grow closer through the process. The conversation also highlights the importance of preparation, including how a Living Benefits life policy provided crucial financial relief and peace of mind during a medical crisis. This episode is a reminder to take your health seriously, prepare for the unexpected, and hold tight to hope—even when the road ahead feels uncertain.

Zen Fidget Board… Ambience — As of late I've been hoping to create an audio space that has several things going on at once (that behave, hopefully). I see this space as a listener drifting into a Matrix-ish Construct room (load room), yet instead of rushing racks of rifles or Morpheus alongside a small-market TV executive's desk, we drift inside the gelatinous mass of a lesser-defined composition of sounds.I usually have better sleep success with envelopes of sound that have smaller things going on. And as the episode title and cover implies, there are several things in here to follow while the envelope takes over.My favorite episode for this is the basketball episode—I love the engulfing fans with the small bounces and squeaks of play. I should make that episode longer, as I'm waking up in the test-taking episode that stresses me out (I went to Military School). Some folks like dry sounds—I won't knock it.Also give us a follow on your pod-player!

The word “foundry” might make you think of large machines pouring metal into molds, but Argonne National Labs has a Quantum Foundry that implants individual atoms, like silicon, into materials such as diamond. The resulting spin qubits are optically active and can use photons to communicate. We can expect spin qubits to help interconnect systems, which could help us achieve distributed quantum computing, but they also could be used for everything from room-temperature biological sensors to durable, space-based dark matter detectors. Welcome to “When Words Fail, Music Speaks” – the podcast that harnesses the healing power of song to combat depression, anxiety, and everyday heartbreak. In today's episode we sit down with the multitalented Mark Firehammer—author of the genre‑blending novel The Echo and The Voice, creator of the wellness system Feelness, and a seasoned songwriter whose career spans from Florida coffee‑houses in the ‘90s to AI‑driven studios today.Mark shares the wild road‑trip story of his early touring days, the unexpected love affair he's had with the legendary Cronut, and the pivotal moment when he realized his next album would have to be built without a band. We dive deep into his groundbreaking Artist‑Imagined series, a quartet of AI‑crafted albums—Heartlands (country), Heartthrob (dance), Heartstrings (alternative) and Heartbeats (rock)—and explore how he trains machines to sing in the voices of imagined artists while preserving his own lived experiences.Along the way, we touch on:The rise and challenges of independent musicians in the streaming eraThe moral and creative debates surrounding AI‑generated music and Spotify's new disclosure rulesHow Mark's nonprofit aims to turn music, theater, film, and visual art into a collaborative network centered on human connectionFavorite childhood influences—from Cat Stevens and James Taylor to the awe‑inspiring voice of Freddie Mercury—and the songs that still move him to tearsWhether you're a songwriter stuck in a creative rut, a fan of cutting‑edge tech, or simply someone looking for a musical pick‑me‑up, this conversation offers a blend of nostalgia, practical insight, and forward‑looking optimism. Grab your headphones, cue up a fresh track, and let Mark's story remind you that when words fall short, music always finds a way to speak.
Ever open your laptop to work on that big project and suddenly find yourself deep in a TikTok scroll? Or decide that right now is the perfect time to snack instead of finishing that report? Yep, we've all been there, right? That's because procrastination isn't laziness, it's humanness. In this deeply personal episode, I'm sharing the story behind my first tattoo: my late mother's heartbeat and my late sister's initial, permanently inked on my wrist in honour of them both taken too soon and as a reminder that we only get a limited number of heartbeats on this earth. But this isn't just a tearjerker (though you might want tissues). It's a wake-up call wrapped in a pep talk you can return to again and again. Because every heartbeat is a countdown. And most of us don't realize it… until we're suddenly out of time. So why do we waste so many of heartbeats waiting to "feel ready"? We delay the workout. We postpone the dream. We distract ourselves from the discomfort of growth. We let the toddler brain in our head call the shots. But here's the truth no one teaches us: You don't need motivation to start. You just need movement. Inside this episode, I'm giving you 20 powerfully simple mantras that snap you out of procrastination and into action — even on the days you're tired, overwhelmed, or completely stuck in your own way. You'll learn: • Why resistance is actually a sign you're on the right path • How to show up even when you don't "feel like it" • The mindset shift that will change how you respond to discomfort • How to make future-you proud instead of panicked • How to use your heartbeats on what truly matters This isn't about hustle culture or perfection. This is about honouring your life. Honouring the people you love. Honouring the moments you still have left. Because the clock is ticking… and today is too precious to postpone. If you're stuck, listen. If you're scared, listen. If you're done wasting your heartbeats… press play now. Save this episode. Seriously. You'll want to come back to it every time procrastination creeps in. Jot down your favorite mantras, write them on sticky notes, put them where you'll see them when your brain starts negotiating with you about doing the hard thing. Because future you deserves a high five, not a headache. Drawing from her experiences with grief, motherhood, and professional burnout, she accompanies others through life's natural cycles with compassion and intuitive wisdom as a peer, never an expert. In her work as a community builder, tarot reader, and creativity champion, Mariah creates spaces where the "both/and" of the human experience is honored: joy intertwined with grief, rest alongside creation, solitude beside belonging. Like nature, she believes our lives ebb and flow in cycles with opportunities to embrace and embody their distinct wisdom.Through seasonal journal prompts, Connection Circles, and creative championing, she creates authentic, welcoming spaces to remember and celebrate our belonging while sharing tools and resources to collaborate, circulate abundance, and cultivate generous reciprocity. We were never meant to navigate the journey alone. In this episode of Hammer Lane Legends, Brian and Mike sit down with Jim to unpack his decades on the road, from the grueling UPS training grounds to the chaos of city deliveries. Jim opens up about the heart attack that changed everything—how he missed the warning signs, what pulled him through, and the lessons it left behind. Along the way, the guys trade laughs and war stories about life behind the wheel, truck-driving competitions, and the unspoken brotherhood that keeps drivers going long after the road ends.
