You've won the all-expense-paid trip to the Ninja Installation taught by Larry Kendall in Fort Collins this May! We'll be in touch soon. Thank you to everyone who entered! Welcome back to the Ninja Selling Podcast! In today's episode, Eric Thompson is joined by Ninja Coach extraordinaire, Brady Smith, to introduce a simple yet powerful tool for resetting your perspective: The One Sheet of Paper Exercise. If you find yourself weighed down by industry noise, personal challenges, or general negativity, this practical exercise is designed to help you physically and mentally discard distractions and refocus on what truly matters – gratitude and actionable steps within your control. Brady shares the origin of this exercise, born from observing a sense of "heaviness" among agents and friends, and his desire to create a tangible way to shift focus. He then walks listeners step-by-step through the process: identifying something you're grateful for, acknowledging something that's bothering you, determining a controllable action step to address the concern, and then physically ripping away and discarding the negative element. What remains is a powerful reminder of your blessings and your commitment to positive action. This episode is a hands-on guide to minimizing distractions, taking control of your focus, and immediately shifting your mindset towards a more positive and productive state. It's a testament to the Ninja principle that simple, intentional actions can yield significant results. Introducing Ninja Coach Brady Smith and his background The Inspiration: Addressing the "Heaviness" and Need for a Mindset Shift Introducing the "One Sheet of Paper Exercise" Step 1: Folding the Paper & Identifying Gratitude (Right Side) Step 2: Identifying What's Bothering You (Left Side) Step 3: Determining a Controllable Action Step (Right Side) Step 4: The Physical Act - Ripping and Discarding the Negative Step 5: Focusing on What Remains - Gratitude and Action The Power of Letting Go of What You Can't Control Connecting Gratitude to Your "Why" for Taking Action The Immediate Impact: Feeling the Weight Lift Repeating the Exercise as Needed for a Lasting Shift   Key Takeaways: "Mindset skill set actions, I feel like it's first for a reason. The other two don't really... if you don't have your mindset in the right place, it's really hard to do for the other two to be successful." "It just seemed like the air was really heavy for a minute there... really struggling... to get out of their head." "Can you control [the thing bothering you]? No." "...on the right side, you're going to write down one thing, one action item that you could do to move the needle to reduce or minimize that thing that you're bothered about." "We're going to rip it in half down the spine... Those big bad interest rates... we're just going to wad up that sheet of paper... and we're literally going to throw it away." "What's left is the right side... What I'm grateful for and what I'm going to do." "You could almost physically see the weight lift off their shoulders." "Do it as much as you need to until you can let go of the control that you don't have over the thing that's got you all anxious or bothered or frustrated or upset." Send us a textToday's topic—self-compassion—feels especially timely. I've been navigating my own challenging season recently, and I wanted to share some reflections and tools that have been helping me, in the hope they'll resonate with you too.In this episode, we discuss:The January Blues: How the transition into the new year often brings a lull after the holidays, leaving many of us grappling with difficult emotions. The Power of Self-Compassion: Why meeting ourselves with kindness, mindfulness, and an understanding of shared humanity can build true resilience, especially during tough times.Recognizing Overwhelm: The importance of naming and processing emotions rather than over-identifying with or numbing out from them.A key takeaway is that self-compassion isn't about glossing over challenges; it's about facing them with gentleness, clarity, and intention. Drawing from Dr. Kristin Neff's framework of self-kindness, mindfulness, and common humanity, we'll talk about ways to reconnect with yourself and regain a sense of agency, even when the world feels chaotic.Whether you're experiencing a brief season of stress or something more prolonged, this episode is a reminder that your emotions matter and that prioritizing your own care is not only okay—it's essential.Resources Mentioned:Dr. Kristin Neff's work on self-compassionJournaling techniques, including thought downloadsThe Lazy Genius podcast by Kendra AdachiAs always, I appreciate you tuning in. Take care of yourself this week, and remember, leaning into self-compassion is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.Let's Stay Connected:This work is challenging, but it's worth it. If you're ready to explore how you can reclaim your energy and redefine your path in medicine, I'd love to help.

Packing for a Disney vacation isn't just about what to wear for the weather or fashion, there's also a fairly detailed Disney dress code that you need to know about.“Can I wear this outfit to Walt Disney World?”What You Can and Can't Wear on Your Walt Disney World VacationChoosing your wardrobe for a Walt Disney World vacation is part of the anticipatory build-up to your departure day. But did you know that Disney World has a set of guidelines for what you cannot wear in Disney Parks and Resort properties?Part 1: This is a Family Park, So Dress AccordinglyDisney's dress code for Walt Disney World begins with a general statement:Proper attire, including shoes and shirts, must be worn at all times. The parks are a casual, family-oriented environment. Ensuring that the parks are family-friendly is an important part of the Disney experience. In that spirit, we ask you to use your discretion and common sense. This is a reminder that Disney takes seriously its reputation as a wholesome family destination. If you have a local non-Disney theme park, then you might know what it's like to see certain attire that would never make it past the front entrance of a Disney Park.So if you're wondering if a certain top or shorts will be allowed into a Disney Park, ask yourself if you'd consider it to be family friendly. That is the lens through which it will be viewed at the front gate.A Look at the Disney World Dress Code and GuidelinesThe next part of the Walt Disney World dress code gets a little more specific.Part 2: Inappropriate Attire for Walt Disney WorldIt's not all left up to the discretion of Cast Members, as there are some specific guidelines. The Walt Disney World Dress Code clearly and plainly states that Cast Members can refuse entry, or kick you out of the park, if you are wearing anything that is inappropriate or that could detract from the experience of other guests.Specifically, the Disney dress code states:Attire that is not appropriate for the parks—and which may result in refusal of admittance—includes, but is not limited to:Costumes and costume masks, which may not be worn by Guests 14 years of age or older.Clothing with objectionable material, including obscene language or graphicsExcessively torn clothingClothing which, by nature, exposes excessive portions of the skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environmentClothing that touches or drags on the groundClothing with multiple layers is subject to search upon entryObjectionable tattoosCostume Exceptions Include:Specific Halloween and Christmas events*Some outfits inspired by Star Wars.* Note that Disney ticketed parties and events have their own specific dress codes, as does Galaxy's Edge. So be sure to check those as well. There are also general rules that apply to the entire Walt Disney World property. They include clothing, but go far beyond just clothing.  You can find the Walt Disney World Property Rules here. For the most part, Disneyland Resort in California has the exact same set of rules and regulations posted on its website.Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel Style PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, we that you enjoyed it. Inspired by Brandon  So you just believe in the things you can touch and see Purpose and meaning, you say, are just legends from long lost days No deeper call to make life sane or mysteries left unexplained Just bide your time here, embrace the pain Please set aside the cynic mind and you may catch a glimpse of something quite divine Just close your eyes so you might see signs of a deeper truth that lies beneath Mind was first and dreamed this world, not the other way around like you thought Everything you see is but a small slice of reality Your senses can't perceive all that is, or all that will ever be You're part of this mind, connected to the source When you look out, the world takes form You'll come to see that nothing's ever lost Please set aside the cynic mind and you may catch a glimpse of something quite divine Just close your eyes so you might see signs of a deeper truth that lies beneath Mind was first and dreamed this world, not the other way around like you thought Listen now my friend, when you leave this world it's not the end Consciousness, you see is not an effect—it's primary This world's façade can fool us all, senses filter out the grander view But for love, but for love, this life is but a dream Website: https://www.markirelandauthor.com Wendy's Blog: https://talkingtonightlights.wordpress.com

Is there such a thing as good stress? Our guest learns to welcome her stress by understanding how it can actually help her, plus tips and tricks to not feel too much of it. Episode summary: Like many of us, our guest Yana Leventon has dealt with a fair amount of stress in her life. But after living through the COVID-19 pandemic and grappling with the ongoing war in Ukraine (with relatives on both sides of the border) Yana's stress levels reached a new high. This week's episode is all about how we can reframe our relationship with stress. Yana spent one week trying a new practice each day. All 7 of the practices were aimed at managing different aspects of stress, from physically metabolizing her stress through exercise to visualization and breathing techniques. These exercises helped her regain a sense of clarity about what is truly not in her control, and agency over what is. She began to see stress as a normal and necessary part of life that can actually be beneficial in the right amount. Later, we hear from the psychologist who developed this stress management tool, Elissa Epel. She discusses the importance of developing a positive relationship with stress, and how we can use stress to feel a sense of empowerment. Practice: Day 1. Embrace Uncertainty: Releasing Embodied Stress Day 2. Let Go of What You Can't Control: Stress Inventory Day 3. Find Excitement in Challenges: Stress Shield Day 4. Metabolize Body Stress: Hormetic Stress Day 5. Immerse Yourself in Nature: Sensory Absorption Day 6. Experience Deep Rest: Breath for Restoration Day 7. Create Bliss Bookends: Start and End Full of Joy For more information on each of the daily practices, check out Elissa Epel's book, The Stress Prescription. Today's guests: Yana Leventon was a refugee in Austria and Italy before migrating to the United States from the former USSR when she was 10 years old. Elissa Epel is a psychologist who specializes in stress, aging and well-being. She has developed self-care practices rooted in scientific research to improve how we cope with stress. Looking back over all that has occurred the past couple of years has reminded me of how precious life and time are. We've all had things drastically change in our lives and in the lives of those around us. And all this change has me pondering the depth of what it means to live the moment, and to appreciate the time we have.  Through this episode, I want to encourage you to examine the truth that life is short. And to dive into why this matters. This is absolutely not in a “life is short and then you die” kind of way, but rather in a way of cherishing one another and the time we have together. I hope to help each of us embrace more fully the gifts of living wisely, aligning with purpose, and especially, loving and being loved. “Is there a way in which someone who was observing how you spend your days… would they get what's really valuable to you?... I don't believe in just living FOR the moment, but living IN the moment… I would just encourage all of us to not miss out on our actual life while maybe worrying about or thinking about our future life or maybe even our past life.”  – Dr. Sara Dill What You'll LearnDaily appreciation Cherishing time and other people Living wisely Embracing the moment Aligning with purpose Fully loving Contact Info and Recommended ResourcesSmall Group Physician Coaching starting soon! Sign up at https://www.saradill.com/coaching (saradill.com/coaching). Sorry for the shortest show notes ever, but I've got Covid-19 and a killer headache. What You CAN and CAN NOT ControlIt's not your job to ensure your child's safety, happiness, or success. This is hard when it comes to self-harm and suicide. We tend to think that we need to protect our children. At the end of the day, we can only do what is within our control. We cannot control whether our children self-harm. We cannot control how our children think or feel. We can only control our own thoughts, feelings, and actionsWho's Going To Take Care of YOU?No one can take care of you for you. The better you manage your thoughts, feelings, and actions, the more impact you will have on your teen's life. You can be the change that you want to see in your teen. This will help give you purpose and perspective. You don't have to change, control, or fix your teen. Sara Visser and Her Retreat! If you'd like to learn more about Sara and her work you can visit her at:https://www.findhopecoaching.com/If you'd like to learn more about her retreat in May 2022, you can learn more at:https://findhopecoaching.org/

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: 20 Modern Heresies, published by rogersbacon on April 2, 2022 on LessWrong. You may have heard about Hereticon, an exclusive invite-only “conference for thoughtcrime” that recently happened in Miami. While I'm sure there were some true heretics in attendance, the cynical part of me feels like it was basically just an excuse for rich, self-styled contrarians to hobnob and pat themselves on the back for being such radical thinkers. Looking at the list of presentations, I'm left a little cold—topics included eugenics, geoengineering, UFOs, transhumanism, psychedelics, ESP, and polyamory. Perhaps this just speaks to what a radical thinker I am (oh wait, now I'm doing it), but I don't find any of these topics to be all that heretical, at least not in any serious or deep way. All of this of course begs the question: what exactly is a heresy? In my estimation, a heresy is a view that questions something which everyone seems to take for granted, something that we have forgotten can even be questioned in the first place. In the best instance, it is a view that no one has truly expressed before, and not just because it is obviously false or uninteresting. It might be wrong or impractical, in fact it probably is, but it's also not impossible to imagine a world in which this belief becomes mainstream. Why engage in heretical thinking? Is it just a convenient excuse to write a bunch of controversial shit (yes.) or is there some broader goal that is served by attempting to come up with a list of blasphemous views? Naturally, Paul Graham has already written eloquently on heresies, how to find them, and why we should try to find them in his essay, “What You Can't Say”. “Great work tends to grow out of ideas that others have overlooked, and no idea is so overlooked as one that's unthinkable. Natural selection, for example. It's so simple. Why didn't anyone think of it before? Well, that is all too obvious. Darwin himself was careful to tiptoe around the implications of his theory. He wanted to spend his time thinking about biology, not arguing with people who accused him of being an atheist. Training yourself to think unthinkable thoughts has advantages beyond the thoughts themselves. It's like stretching. When you stretch before running, you put your body into positions much more extreme than any it will assume during the run. If you can think things so outside the box that they'd make people's hair stand on end, you'll have no trouble with the small trips outside the box that people call innovative.” I think this nails it—heretical thinking is an exercise in the stretching of “culture-space”, in expanding our sense of what's possible. With this in mind, I came up with a list of 20 modern heresies, guaranteed to make your hair stand on end (okay probably not, but they should at least provide some delicious food for thought). 1. Recorded music is an addictive superstimuli that causes us grave psychological harm, both individually and collectively. Music should only be performed live, and even then it should be reserved for special occasions (i.e. music should be regarded as sacred, as it was for much of human (pre)history). 2. Pedophilia is a disease that inflicts terrible harm on its victims and its perpetrators and we should seek to treat it like we would any other disease (there is at least one drug that reduces pedophilic urges, but it does so by blocking testosterone production and comes with significant side effects). Child sex robots and VR child porn should be legal and destigmatized as they provide an outlet for the sexual urges of pedophiles and thereby reduce their psychological suffering (see “Pedophile Problems”). 3. Most men would be happier in polyandrous relationships in which they share one woman with 3 to 5 other men. Most women would be happier too. 4. Solitary con...

We had to audible this week because technical difficulties killed the interview we were supposed to have for you.  But this is an episode I've wanted to do for some time.  We dove in on the writing called "What You Can't Say" by Paul Graham.  It was written back in 2004 by Paul but it feels like an important piece to come back to with everything that's gone down the last couple of years.  Fabi and I don't agree on everything about this piece but we had fun debating the finer points. Paul Graham is a programmer, writer, and investor. In 1995, he and Robert Morris started Viaweb, the first software as a service company. Viaweb was acquired by Yahoo in 1998, where it became Yahoo Store. In 2001 he started publishing essays on paulgraham.com, which now gets around 25 million page views per year. In 2005 he and Jessica Livingston, Robert Morris, and Trevor Blackwell started Y Combinator, the first of a new type of startup incubator. Since 2005 Y Combinator has funded over 3000 startups, including Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe, and Reddit. In 2019 he published a new Lisp dialect written in itself called Bel. Paul is the author of On Lisp (Prentice Hall, 1993), ANSI Common Lisp (Prentice Hall, 1995), and Hackers & Painters (O'Reilly, 2004). He has an AB from Cornell and a PhD in Computer Science from Harvard, and studied painting at RISD and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.     Join us on Telegram at https://t.me/tcrpodcast   Resources from this episode:   Paul Graham - What You Can't Say: http://www.paulgraham.com/say.html   Christopher Ryan Podcast (Tangentially Speaking) about this same writing: https://chrisryanphd.com/418-wmtbg-discussion-of-what-you-cant-say-by-paul-graham/

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is The Science of Winning at Life, Part 1: Scientific Self-Help: The State of Our Knowledge, published by lukeprog. Part of the sequence: The Science of Winning at Life Some have suggested that the Less Wrong community could improve readers' instrumental rationality more effectively if it first caught up with the scientific literature on productivity and self-help, and then enabled readers to deliberately practice self-help skills and apply what they've learned in real life. I think that's a good idea. My contribution today is a quick overview of scientific self-help: what professionals call "the psychology of adjustment." First I'll review the state of the industry and the scientific literature, and then I'll briefly summarize the scientific data available on three topics in self-help: study methods, productivity, and happiness. The industry and the literature As you probably know, much of the self-help industry is a sham, ripe for parody. Most self-help books are written to sell, not to help. Pop psychology may be more myth than fact. As Christopher Buckley (1999) writes, "The more people read [self-help books], the more they think they need them... [it's] more like an addiction than an alliance." Where can you turn for reliable, empirically-based self-help advice? A few leading therapeutic psychologists (e.g., Albert Ellis, Arnold Lazarus, Martin Seligman) have written self-help books based on decades of research, but even these works tend to give recommendations that are still debated, because they aren't yet part of settled science. Lifelong self-help researcher Clayton Tucker-Ladd wrote and updated Psychological Self-Help (pdf) over several decades. It's a summary of what scientists do and don't know about self-help methods (as of about 2003), but it's also more than 2,000 pages long, and much of it surveys scientific opinion rather than experimental results, because on many subjects there aren't any experimental results yet. The book is associated with an internet community of people sharing what does and doesn't work for them. More immediately useful is Richard Wiseman's 59 Seconds. Wiseman is an experimental psychologist and paranormal investigator who gathered together what little self-help research is part of settled science, and put it into a short, fun, and useful Malcolm Gladwell-ish book. The next best popular-level general self-help book is perhaps Martin Seligman's What You Can Change and What You Can't. Two large books rate hundreds of popular self-help books according to what professional psychologists think of them, and offer advice on how to choose self-help books. Unfortunately, this may not mean much because even professional psychologists very often have opinions that depart from the empirical data, as documented extensively by Scott Lilienfeld and others in Science and Pseudoscience in Clinical Psychology and Navigating the Mindfield. These two books are helpful in assessing what is and isn't known according to empirical research (rather than according to expert opinion). Lilienfeld also edits the useful journal Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, and has compiled a list of harmful psychological treatments. Also see Nathan and Gorman's A Guide to Treatments That Work, Roth & Fonagy's What Works for Whom?, and, more generally, Stanovich's How to Think Straight about Psychology. Many self-help books are written as "one size fits all," but of course this is rarely appropriate in psychology, and this leads to reader disappointment (Norem & Chang, 2000). But psychologists have tested the effectiveness of reading particular problem-focused self-help books ("bibliotherapy").1 For example, it appears that reading David Burns' Feeling Good can be as effective for treating depression as individual or group therapy. Results vary from book to book. ...
