On February 20, 1974, while recovering from the effects of sodium pentothal administered for the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth, Dick received a home delivery of Darvon from a young woman. When he opened the door, he was struck by the dark-haired girl's beauty, and was especially drawn to her golden necklace. He asked her about its curious fish-shaped design. As she was leaving, she replied: "This is a sign used by the early Christians." Dick called the symbol the "vesicle pisces". This name seems to have been based on his conflation of two related symbols, the Christian ichthys symbol (two intersecting arcs delineating a fish in profile), which the woman was wearing, and the vesica piscis.[39] Dick recounted that as the sun glinted off the gold pendant, the reflection caused the generation of a "pink beam" of light that mesmerized him. He came to believe the beam imparted wisdom and clairvoyance, and also believed it to be intelligent. On one occasion, he was startled by a separate recurrence of the pink beam, which imparted the information that his infant son was ill. The Dicks rushed the child to the hospital, where the illness was confirmed by professional diagnosis.[40][verification needed] After the woman's departure, Dick began experiencing strange hallucinations. Although initially attributing them to side effects from medication, he considered this explanation implausible after weeks of continued hallucination. He told Charles Platt: "I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane."[41] Throughout February and March 1974, Dick experienced a series of hallucinations which he referred to as "2-3-74",[26][42] shorthand for February–March 1974. Aside from the "pink beam", he described the initial hallucinations as geometric patterns, and, occasionally, brief pictures of Jesus and ancient Rome. As the hallucinations increased in duration and frequency, Dick claimed he began to live two parallel lives—one as himself, "Philip K. Dick", and one as "Thomas",[43] a Christian persecuted by Romans in the first century AD. He referred to the "transcendentally rational mind" as "Zebra", "God" and "VALIS" (an acronym for Vast Active Living Intelligence System). He wrote about the experiences, first in the semi-autobiographical novel Radio Free Albemuth, then in VALIS, The Divine Invasion, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer and the unfinished The Owl in Daylight (the VALIS trilogy).[citation needed] In 1974, Dick wrote a letter to the FBI, accusing various people, including University of California, San Diego professor Fredric Jameson, of being foreign agents of Warsaw Pact powers.[44] He also wrote that Stanisław Lem was probably a false name used by a composite committee operating on orders of the Communist party to gain control over public opinion.[45] At one point, Dick felt he had been taken over by the spirit of the prophet Elijah. He believed that an episode in his novel Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said was a detailed retelling of a biblical story from the Book of Acts, which he had never read.[46] He documented and discussed his experiences and faith in a private journal he called his "exegesis", portions of which were later published as The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick. The last novel he wrote was The Transmigration of Timothy Archer; it was published shortly after his death in 1982.[47]https://amzn.to/3ITbWCTBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Questions like “What does this mean?” are central to our encounters with art. “How are these signs connected?” or “how do all symbols fit into an unstated scheme?” are the foundational concerns of aesthetics. Yet, when the same concerns crop up regularly in almost any other part of life, we give a clinical, pathological name: paranoia. These questions were the makings of Paranoia, a symposium held at Verdurin in February 2025. This episode is a recoding of A Long Thread, a talk by the writer Sam Jennigs.Sam speaks about what is arguably the first conspiracy theory in Western intellectual history: Gnosticism. In particular, he considers how the doctrine of Gnosis arises through the growing belief that “interpretation” of scripture was a vital part of faith. This focus on interpretation breeds an ethos of seeking subtextual or hidden meaning. From Renaissance occultists to moderns like Pynchon, and Phillip K. Dick, writers have turned to Gnosticism as a secret undercurrent in the history of Western literature. The Paranoia programme in full.More events at Verdurin.Sam's Vita Contemplativa.

For the Memories of a Lifetime.....In the Year 2084, Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a mild-mannered construction worker just living the simple life with his loving wife Lori (Sharon Stone). All seems well and normal, except he's been having these dreams.....about going to Mars, where apparently his eyes can get sucked out of his head if he tries to breathe freely on the surface?? :o Maybe they're not dreams, maybe he has been to Mars....and when he visits a local travel agency (sort of) named Rekall to get memories implanted about a possible trip to Mars, something happens. People start trying to kill him...and worse, all is not what it seems. And what results is a wild, bloody adventure where Quaid not only goes to Mars but gets involved in an increasingly violent effort to fend off an oppressive corporate lead by Cohaagen (Ronny Cox) to exploit the population of settlers there by depriving them of air. Loosely based on a science fiction novel by Phillip K. Dick (Minority Report) and directed by legendary Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Robocop), this lavish sci-fi action adventure became an instant phenomenon when it was first released thirty-five years ago this June. Which leaves only one thing left to do....Get Your Ass to Mars!!!!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Dick adaptation? Or would he rather not have this memory implanted?Recommendations: Bri – Make friends with a catCozi – Companion (2025)

Brett Nemeroff returns to help us stop some crimes of the future. It's the final episode of our Tom v Tom series. Steven Spielberg's MINORITY REPORT, released in 2002 and starring Tom Cruise as John Anderton, a pre-crime cop in Washington D.C. 2054. Based on a Phillip K. Dick novella, the film is a prescient vision of the future, and remains one of the strongest entries of both Spielberg and Cruise's 21st century filmographies.
IT'S THE FINAL EPISODE OF THE YEAR! Having amassed more than 100 episodes in its run, PACCTS' sixth season will focus its sights on “the greatest films of all time” (both in the US and internationally), as assembled by the British Film Institute's 2022 Sight and Sound Poll of industry critics. Corey will be choosing American films from the list, and Paul will be choosing international ones. Our goal is to examine the films that are considered great, and why that may be the case. Corey closes out this year with number 54, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982). This is the first time this season that Paul and Corey both did not quite enjoy the film. They discuss Phillip K. Dick, the cast, the effects (which kinda left them cold), and why the hell we should care about Deckard at all! Thank you so much for joining us on this year's journey. We had a blast and can't wait for next year! Happy Holidays and see you in February 2025!
Who wants to get bummed out?! It definitely won't be Eric because he didn't make it in for this one. Erik Davis stands tall at the intersection between mysticism, technology, and counterculture. He's one of my favorite writers, the author of many stupendous books, among them "TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information," "Nomad Codes," as well as "High Weirdness" a highly entertaining book that explores 1970s counterculture and its relationship with altered states of consciousness. Erik is also an Esalen faculty member, having recently taught a course on Embodied Writing and Spiritual Practice. In this conversation, we went into his new book, "Blotter," an extended meditation on LSD blotter art and the culture that surrounds it. We also found time to veer off into a host of topics, including Terence McKenna, John C. Lilly, Dick Price, madness, Stan Grof, the spiritual emergency network, prep-school deadheads, the Village Voice, the Internet and Erik's theory that it kills subcultures, the phenomenon of what Erik calls "cannabis thinking," how he was never much of a "cannabis writer," tape machines and their place in the counterculture, the Merry Pranksters, Phillip K. Dick, Bay Area Poster art, the DEA and its own little zine - and much more. Join Alex and guest host Dr. Chris Mazurek as they discuss the implications of a near-future world with human-looking androids called Replicants in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982). The film is based on Phillip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The film stars Harrison Ford, in between his Indiana Jones and Star Wars stints, who plays Rick Deckard, a Blade Runner — a person who hunts and kills (retires) these replicants because they're not supposed to be on Earth. Rutger Hauer plays Roy Batty, the leader of the replicant group being hunted, who ends up a tragic figure rather than merely a bad guy. He just wants to live more than four years! The guys explore the nature of life as a replicant, such as emotional development, sentience, memories, and objectification. Total Recall is a 1990 Paul Verhoeven directed adaptation of the Phillip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale." It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid, a construction worker who dreams of going to Mars and stops at Rekall Incorporated to have the memories of one such trip implanted into his brain. However, something goes wrong. It appears that "Douglas" has actually been a spy who's been to mars all along! He'll now have to get back to the red planet and figure out what happened to himself before he's captured by the shadowy "organization" that seems to want to keep him from there! This week, we're taking a look at Ridley Scott's groundbreaking, visually striking 1982 movie, Blade Runner. It tells the story of a retired cop, Rick Deckerd, who happens to be a former BLADE RUNNER, a specially trained breed of cop whose sole duty is to hunt down “replicants”, artificial beings created for hard labor off-world. Replicants are not allowed back on their home planet under pain of death, and that's where Deckerd comes in, he's pulled out of retirement for the purpose of hunting down 4 of these escaped replicants who have returned to Earth to question their creator, Elden Tyrell. While investigating the Tyrell Corporation, Deckerd learns that there is a 5th replicant on Earth, Tyrell's assistant, Rachel, however, she is unaware that she is a replicant because she has been implanted with the memories of Tyrell's niece. Now Deckerd not only has the problem of hunting down the original 4 replicants, he seems to be developing feelings for Rachel who, herself, isn't human. What did we think of this neo-noir/cyber-punk/sci-fi classic? Listen in to the conversation and find out!
