The A24 film Marty Supreme brings the world of table tennis into the cultural spotlight, it also quietly parallels a powerful real-life story behind the sport. Appearing in two scenes in the film is Yasiris Ortiz, a professional table tennis champion and Bronx-based community leader whose journey from international competition to grassroots youth empowerment mirrors the film's central themes of discipline, belief, and dreaming beyond circumstance. Ortiz's appearance in Marty Supreme is not a performance in the traditional sense; she is not portraying a fictional character, but rather bringing authenticity to the screen as a real athlete whose life has been shaped by the sport. For Ortiz, table tennis has never been just a game; it has been a tool for transformation, one she now uses to create opportunity for young people across New York City. Born and raised in Bayaguana, Dominican Republic, Ortiz discovered table tennis at a young age and quickly fell in love with the sport after competing in her first tournament. That passion carried her beyond her hometown and onto the international stage, representing the Dominican Republic as a member of the national table tennis team at the cadet, junior, and senior levels. Through competition, she traveled the world and learned firsthand how sport can open doors far beyond what once seemed possible. In 2016, Ortiz moved to New York City with her family, facing the challenges of adapting to a new country, learning English, continuing her education, and rebuilding her athletic life from the ground up. Unsure whether she would be able to continue competing, she spent countless hours riding the subway across the city in search of table tennis clubs where she could practice and stay connected to the sport that had shaped her identity. What began as persistence soon became purpose. That purpose crystallized when Ortiz began teaching table tennis at an elementary school in the South Bronx. There, she witnessed something transformative: students arrived to class excited, engaged, and eager to learn. Through table tennis, they developed focus, confidence, discipline, and joy—qualities that carried into the classroom and beyond. As interest grew, neighboring schools began reaching out, and what started as a single program evolved into Spin & Learn, an education and wellness organization founded in 2020 that integrates table tennis with academics, physical fitness, and social-emotional learning (SEL). Since its launch, Spin & Learn has partnered with more than 45 public schools across New York City, serving thousands of K–12 students through in-school enrichment, after-school programming, wellness days, assemblies, and author visits connected to Ortiz's children's book, “Yasi the Champion.” The organization has become known for meeting students where they are, using movement and play to build lifelong skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. It delivers high-quality programming at scale through its strategic partnerships with leaders in the global table tennis industry, including Paddle Palace, the leading equipment supplier in North America, and Stiga Sports as Ortiz's official partner. Now, as Marty Supreme brings renewed visibility to the sport, Ortiz is marking a new chapter with the official launch of the Spin & Learn Foundation, a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to expand access to table tennis, wellness, and enrichment programs beyond the school setting and into the broader community. The Spin & Learn Foundation was created because families kept asking for a place where their children could continue training after leaving their school programs. Ortiz saw how quickly access could disappear once students moved on, even though the interest and talent were still there. The Foundation is about creating continuity, making sure young people and families have a place to grow, train, and belong. While Spin & Learn operates primarily within schools, the Foundation is focused on long-term, community-based impact. Its mission is to provide programs for economically disadvantaged individuals across diverse communities, ensuring access to enrichment opportunities through table tennis that promote physical and mental wellness, build personal resilience, and develop leadership skills for lifelong success. Through future partnerships with community centers and shared spaces, the Foundation aims to serve not only youth, but also families, adults, and seniors who may not otherwise have access to structured recreational and wellness programming. Ortiz sees a meaningful connection between the themes of Marty Supreme and the work she has spent years building, noting that she relates deeply to the film because she came to this country without a clear path, driven only by a dream. Everything she has built since then, including a table tennis program that has reached thousands of students, started with believing in that dream. As table tennis reaches new audiences through film and popular culture, Ortiz believes the moment carries responsibility as well as opportunity. She emphasizes that representation matters, but representation paired with access is what creates real change. This Day in Legal History: Powell v. AlabamaOn February 16, 1932, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Powell v. Alabama, a case that would become a cornerstone of modern criminal procedure. The appeal arose from the notorious Scottsboro Boys prosecutions in Alabama, where nine young Black men were accused of raping two white women aboard a train. The trials moved with alarming speed, and the defendants were sentenced to death after proceedings that offered little meaningful access to legal counsel. In some instances, lawyers were appointed on the day of trial, leaving virtually no time to prepare a defense.The case forced the Court to confront whether such rushed representation satisfied the requirements of due process under the Fourteenth Amendment. When the decision was issued later that year, the Court held that in capital cases, state courts must provide defendants with effective assistance of counsel. The justices emphasized that the right to be heard would mean little without the guiding hand of an attorney. The ruling did not yet create a broad right to counsel in all felony cases, but it marked a significant expansion of constitutional protections in state criminal proceedings.Powell signaled that fundamental fairness in state trials was subject to federal constitutional scrutiny. It also laid important groundwork for later decisions that would extend the right to counsel beyond capital cases. The case remains a defining example of how procedural safeguards can shape the legitimacy of the criminal justice system.The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit revived part of Google's challenge to a Wildseed Mobile LLC patent covering the creation and transmission of “hot links” through text messages. A three-judge panel vacated a decision by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board that had upheld one remaining claim of the patent, while invalidating the others. The appellate court found that the board failed to properly analyze Google's argument that the claim was invalid in light of prior art.The disputed claim involved generating a hot link using either an SMS message or an instant message. Although Google addressed both aspects in its petition, the board focused only on the SMS portion and did not meaningfully address the instant messaging limitation. The Federal Circuit said the board neither evaluated whether prior art covered the instant messaging element nor explained why it declined to do so. Because of that omission, the panel sent the case back to the board for further review.Wildseed had accused Google of infringing the patent based on how advertisements function on YouTube. The lawsuit was initially filed in Texas in 2022 but later moved to federal court in California, where proceedings were paused pending the outcome of the PTAB review. In 2024, the board had already invalidated claims in two related Wildseed patents involving video ads and smartphone notifications.Google's Hot Link Patent Claim Challenge Revived At Fed. Circ. - Law360Federal prosecutors have unveiled additional details in a criminal case accusing Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz of participating in a pitch-fixing scheme tied to sports betting. A superseding indictment filed in New York alleges that Clase exchanged coded text messages with associates and bettors before games to signal when he would throw specific pitches. The messages reportedly used poultry-themed language such as “rooster” and “chicken” to disguise the scheme. In one example, an associate allegedly texted Clase about throwing a “rock at the first rooster,” to which Clase responded affirmatively.Prosecutors claim that bettors used this advance information to place successful proposition bets on pitch speed, winning hundreds of thousands of dollars. According to the indictment, bettors earned at least $400,000 on wagers involving Clase and about $60,000 on wagers involving Ortiz. The players allegedly agreed to accept bribes of at least $12,000 each. Authorities also allege that some coordination occurred in person, including meetings at Clase's home, and that payments were routed through intermediaries.The updated indictment adds Robinson Vasquez Germosen, who prosecutors say acted as a middleman and later lied to FBI agents about his knowledge of the scheme. He is charged with making false statements. Clase and Ortiz previously pleaded not guilty, and their attorneys maintain that the allegations are unproven and will be challenged at trial.MLB Pitcher Sent ‘Coded' Texts For Rigged Pitches, Feds Say - Law360 UKA long-running dispute over ownership of a goldendoodle named Tucker has concluded with a private sealed-bid auction ordered by the Delaware Court of Chancery. The case, Callahan v. Nelson, involved former partners Karen Callahan and Joseph Nelson, who had jointly acquired the dog while dating but could not agree on ownership after their 2022 breakup. Because the couple was never married, they could not rely on Delaware's family law statute that allows courts to consider a pet's well-being when dividing marital property.After conflicting rulings in lower courts, the matter reached the state's premier business court, where Vice Chancellor Bonnie W. David applied a property “partition” remedy. Rather than ordering shared custody or considering the dog's best interests, the court required a single blind bidding process between the parties. Stuart Ortiz is a film director, writer, producer and one of the founding members of The Vicious Brothers, the filmmaking duo behind Grave Encounters 1 and 2.Stuart's most recent feature is Strange Harvest, a true-crime–styled, found footage film he wrote and directed.Strange harvest is a serial-killer faux documentary that effectively weaponizes the aesthetics of Netflix true-crime docs by luring you into a false reality with a familiar documentary style then turning up the horror with deeply unsettling imagery that looks and most importantly, feels very real.It's certainly one of the most unflinching and innovative found footage movies in recent years and has earned plenty of special praise for its naturalistic performances, grisly practical effects and overall dread.In this conversation, Stuart and I get into his career history, the making of Strange Harvest and how to execute modern found footage with high impact and a low budget, on today's episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show.Without further ado, here is Strange Harvest Director, Stuart Ortiz.Key TakeawaysEmbrace CGI strategically as a problem solver. A lot of purist horror cinephiles grumble at the use of CGI, and I agree that it shouldn't be overused—but it also shouldn't be avoided, because it can solve colossal problems. The pool scene is a perfect case study: filling an Olympic-sized pool would have required roughly 35,000 gallons of water, which was both budget-killing and ethically questionable during a drought. Instead, Stuart used VFX to build the water and environment, and it wasn't even all that expensive. Use CGI where it's the cleanest solution to a real-world constraint, and save practical effects for what sells the tactile reality.Indie budgeting is often about where you don't spend. Stuart minimized spending on a large crew, expensive cameras, and elaborate lighting because the format called for rough, archival-style imagery and on-the-fly filmmaking. Instead, he spent heavily where failure would be fatal: special FX makeup, which made up about 15–20% of the budget. He knew horror audiences would be especially scrutinizing when it came to effects (and he was right), so he spent disproportionately in that area—and it clearly paid off. Budgeting a movie can be complicated, but Strange Harvest proves that it's important to spend where you'll get the highest return on your investment.Wear more hats than you're used to. Stuart states that it's unrealistic for directors to “just” direct nowadays, especially on micro-budgets. Strange Harvest exists largely because Stuart didn't just direct—he also wrote, edited, and produced the film. On top of that, much of the crew wore multiple hats across the board, which is ultimately how the movie was able to get made.
