Like many countries around the world, Australia has an aging population. Currently about 4.2m Aussies are aged over 65, 16% of the population. And more than half a million people, are over 85. With statistics like that, it's not a surprise that there is a huge demand for nurses to work in aged care. In Episode 3 of Nursing Down Under – The Podcast (Season 3), our host Kate Creedon is joined by four Alliance Nurses who share their stories about what life, and nursing, is like all over Australia. Kate speaks to Irish nurse Eoin, who has travelled all over Australia but has mainly worked in Melbourne and Perth. Eoin describes the two cities and how they compare to life back home in a quiet part of Ireland. She also meets Danielle, a midwife from England who has done a bit of everything in Australia, and says her rural placement is one of the best opportunities she's ever been given. Kate chats to Taylor as well, she's an Australian nurse who is now works in Adelaide, SA. She talks about the benefits of living in the ‘20-minute city' and describes how Alliance helps her to foster relationships within hospital environments. Finally, we hear from another Irish nurse, Niamh, who is based in Brisbane and loves how much freedom she has as a nurse in Australia, compared to back home.
In episode 2 of the new series, our host Kate Creedon talks with two sporty special guests, originally from Ireland, who've followed the well-trodden path across to Sydney's Eastern suburbs. There's ex-Irish international rugby player Aoife McDermott, who moved to Sydney in 2019 and has taken up a second sport, Aussie Rules, whilst also doing agency nursing work for Alliance. Aoife tells us how the flexibility of agency nursing allows her to fit her sporting commitments alongside her work and explains how Alliance supported her in making the trip down under! We also meet Joe Kinahan who swapped Ireland for Sydney in 2015 and is now the Chairperson of Clan Na Gael GAA Club in Bondi. He and Kate discuss his time in Australia so far, and Joe explains how sports clubs can be a really great way for people to make friends when they arrive – even if you're not particularly sporty!
Rosie Keane was appointed Consul General of Ireland to Sydney in September 2021. She is originally from Connemara, in County Galway, but from her base in Sydney, Rosie now works alongside the Consulate team to strengthen Ireland's links with New South Wales, to promote Irish culture, heritage and interests, and to provide services to Irish citizens in the region. In this episode Kate chats to Consul General Keane about all the consular support people from Ireland can get while here in Australia, the connections they can facilitate in the community and how to get in touch when you arrive. Not to mention all the great events for the Irish community!
