Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
The red flowered plant that shows up everywhere at this time of year–I saw a forest of them in Wegman's this morning– is called in Mexico the cuetlaxochitl, or the noche buena; but Americans know it by as the namesake of man who introduced it to the United States: poinsettia. Yet Joel Roberts Poinsett was a more interesting organism than that plant given his name. He was a South Carolinian who spent years away from the state, and was a committed nationalist and anti-nullifier; a world traveller when few Americans were; a slaveowner who other slaveowners regarded as potentially anti-slavery; an international investor who also labored for South Carolina local improvements; a diplomat who spent years if not decades trying to find a way to be a soldier. And that's leaving a few facets of his identity out. As my guest Lindsay Schackenbach Regele sums him up, “He was not the same, anywhere.”Lindsay Schakenbach Regele is with me to discuss Joel Poinsett, his era, and what he reveals about it. She was previously on the podcast in a conversation that dropped on April 3, 2019, which focused on her book Manufacturing Advantage: War, the State, and the Origins of American Industry, 1776–1848 (Hopkins, 2019). Her latest book is Flowers, Guns, and Money: Joel Roberts Poinsett and the Paradoxes of American Patriotism, and it is the focus of our conversation today. For more information and links, to to our Substack at www.historicallythinking.org00:00 – Introduction 00:22 – Joel Roberts Poinsett: A Complex Figure 02:47 – Early Life: A Loyalist Family's Journey05:19 – Education in New England and England 06:50 – European Travels and Grand Tour 08:56 – Mission to Latin America 11:11 – Journey Down the Volga River 13:38 – Botanical Interests and Scientific Pursuits 18:34 – Secret Agent in South America 21:41 – Supporting Independence Movements 23:38 – Return to South Carolina 25:24 – South Carolina Politics and Public Works 26:32 – First Mission to Mexico 30:02 – Masonic Lodges and Political Influence 32:43 – Mining Investments and Financial Dealings 35:57 – The Nullification Crisis 42:35 – Understanding Nullifiers vs. Anti-Nullifiers 46:15 – Secretary of War 47:44 – The Trail of Tears and Indian Removal 50:38 – The Seminole War and Bloodhounds 51:44 – Later Life: Cuba and Final Years 54:06 – Evaluating Poinsett's Legacy 57:36 – Meeting Tocqueville59:48 – Next Project: Francisco Miranda 1:02:28 – Closing

Sean Jansen spent the first 25 years of his life in Southern California. Growing up as a surfer, he endeavored to spend every waking minute in the ocean. By 26, he had travelled to 26 countries and lived internationally in both China and Colombia. Upon returning to the US, Sean moved to Montana, where he guides clients in Yellowstone National Park and writes about the great outdoors. In this conversation, we focus on his passion to raise awareness of the plight of the highly endangered Vaquita Porpoise through his 1000-mile stand-up paddleboard expedition down the length of the Gulf of California. Jansen survived the perilous journey with the help of Slow Baja Alums, Michael Younghusband and Graham Mackintosh. He's written a beautiful account of the voyage titled, Paddling With Porpoise, which is available on Amazon. After more than a year in the works, I am delighted to share this conversation about Jansen's journey through recovery, discovery, and conservation, paddling down the second-longest peninsula on the planet.100% of the proceeds from this book will be donated to conservation.Learn more about Sean Jansen here:https://www.jansenjournals.com/Follow Sean on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/jansen_journals/Mentioned in this episode: Slow Baja Vintage Expedition:https://www.slowbaja.com/adventures/slow-baja-vintage-expedition-1Buy Baja Bound Insurance here:https://www.bajabound.com/quote/?r=fl9vypdv2t

In January 2022, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe was found dead in the snow outside a fellow officer's home following a night of socializing. His girlfriend, Karen Read, was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a deadly accident, with prosecutors alleging she struck O'Keefe with her SUV and left him in the freezing conditions. The initial trial concluded in July 2024 with a mistrial due to a deadlocked jury.Since then, the case has seen significant developments, including the termination of lead investigator Trooper Michael Proctor for misconduct related to the investigation. Additionally, a juror from the first trial has joined Read's defense team, highlighting concerns about the investigation's integrity. Despite defense efforts to dismiss charges on double jeopardy grounds, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has ruled that Read can be retried. Jury selection for the retrial is set to commence on April 1, 2025.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comSource:Karen Read and John O'Keefe: Inside evolution of Boston murder mystery since mistrial | Fox News

Send us a textEvery year, dozens of people load up their canoes or kayaks and set out to travel the length of the Mississippi River. Anne Sherve-Ose and two friends took a different approach. Over the course of 13 years, they paddled the Mississippi River one week at a time. In this episode, I talk with Anne Sherve-Ose about those trips. She describes how the trips evolved and changed over time, shares an episode where they got stranded, and talks about the joys she experienced being on the river. We also talk about her history with outdoor adventures and taking adolescents and young adults on wilderness experiences, including a community college course she taught that included a week-long expedition in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area; students on that trip completed art projects to describe their personal experiences while camping and canoeing.
All spoken in both English and Mandarin. In this episode (375), we take a fun trip down memory lane, revisiting what we were talking about years ago on the podcast and reflecting on how far we've come. Plus, after much deliberation, we finally pull the trigger on a big decision—buying a gaming PC! Tune in for some nostalgia, tech talk, and the usual laughs. Starting Your Journey Down The Wellness Way, it's Time To Start Your Journey With Me! This week on The Wellness Way podcast, we have another special episode by yours truly, because we have an important announcement to make: I am officially launching a membership! Throughout my time sharing this important work, and especially after the incredible event with Barbara O'Neill, I have received so many messages from people desperately needing help and advice about healing themselves naturally. After war, the biggest money-spinner for politicians is the pharmaceutical industry. It is a medical model designed to milk you of money! But the good news is, there is something we can do to change this. Now of course, I am not a doctor, so I cannot offer medical advice. But what I can do is share what I have learnt over the years on what has helped me, as well as all of the information I have gathered from my own research and my phenomenal podcast guests. But there is an important caveat: what exactly this membership is going to look like, is completely up to you. All I know is that this is going to be an incredible community, where we can learn from each other and empower ourselves with knowledge. You are not alone. I will be hosting these Zoom meetings every Thursday from now until this community is set up and ready to go! More details will be announced in due course, but for now, I shall leave you with a particularly apt episode from my Natural Wellness FasterClass series: Your Journey. Australia delivered again! The controversy started in FP withJames Vowles's unprecedented Sophie's choice (cue his ChatGPT response). What should he have done? What does it mean for both sides of the Williams garage? And will someone please let us turn on some macros for this master spreadsheet already! From surgery to top step, Sainz is driving like a man on a mission. Or as he puts it, "an unemployed driver". Could he have won vs Max in a perfectly executed race? Should we take Lando's advice and all get our appendices removed? And now that Sainz has matched Checo's wins in the last few years -- is Red Bull his next stop?Either way, silly season just got a little spicier. Are Danny Ric's days numbered? Is Freddy V regretting his Hamilton trade on his way to Japan? Finally we talk visor tear offs, poor Georgie Russ, Guenther's hilarious post-race interviews and how Bridgette is day-trading her fantasy team. CAREER-VIEW MIRROR - biographies of colleagues in the automotive and mobility industries.
Rhett is Managing Director of JLR in Saudi Arabia. His impressive automotive career path spans the UK, the U.A.E., Oman, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. Throughout his career he has worked extensively with premium brands including JLR, Audi, Mercedes Benz, BMW and Alfa Romeo. Additionally he's had experience with Volkswagen, Honda, Stellantis brands, Great Wall, Peugeot and Nissan as well as used cars, motorcycles and marine products. In our conversation we talk about his childhood in South Africa and some of the circumstances that have contributed to providing the drive he has demonstrated during his journey so far. We follow Rhett's progression from trainee car salesman through to a host of senior international positions. He shares openly how the opportunities came about and the rationale behind each of his decisions to move including factoring in the potential impact on his family. Rhett reveals how the behaviours that served him well with his classmates had the potential to stymie his car sales potential and the wake up call that allowed him to see the bigger picture and adopt a more mature approach. Reviewing his most recent move, we learn how the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix of 2021 was even more eventful than we already thought. A phone call during that race weekend led to him to break with his final approach plan and return to Saudi Arabia to complete what he saw as “unfinished business”. I found Rhett's story authentic and inspiring and I trust you will too. I look forward to hearing what resonates with you.
