Storm Éowyn generated the highest storm surges ever recorded

A research team at University of Galway has revealed that Storm Éowyn generated the highest storm surges ever recorded at key locations on Ireland's western seaboard. By analysing sea level information from 47 datasets provided by the Irish National Tide Gauge Network and the Office of Public Works, the team based at the University's School of Engineering have highlighted the unprecedented power of the storm's surge - more than 2.5 metres above the normal predicted tidal water level. Storm Éowyn, one of the most powerful storms to hit Ireland in recent years, also saw record-breaking winds. The highest gust recorded was 184 km/h, with the highest 10-minute wind speed reaching 142 km/h at Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station in County Galway. Storm Éowyn highest storm surges ever recorded Despite the severity of Storm Éowyn in other ways and the devastation wrought by hurricane force winds and lasting damage to power and water supplies, the timing of the tides during storm landfall meant little to no flooding impacts. The research team highlighted data from three coastal locations during Storm Éowyn - Galway Port, Limerick Docks and Shannon Airport. At Galway Port, the storm surge peaked at 2.60 meters above the normal predicted astronomical tide, the highest ever recorded at this station since its operation began in 2007 At Limerick Docks the highest surge along the western coastline was recorded - reaching 2.99 meters above tidal level At Shannon Airport, the tidal gauge recorded surge of 2.70 meters. Had these surges occurred a week earlier during the high water spring tide, the water levels would have been much higher, with data predicting that the water level at Galway Port would have reached 4.96m, Limerick Dock at 5.85m, and Shannon Airport at 5.43m above mean sea level, inundating the areas. Dr Indiana Olbert, School of Engineering at University of Galway's College of Science and Engineering, said: "Extensive research suggest that flooding has increased in frequency and severity in recent decades around the world and this is attributed to climate change. Our analysis of the drivers of flooding in Ireland show that the anthropogenic climate change - that's the changes related to human activity - will drive more extreme rainfall and generate more intense flooding. Such changes are likely to continue with further warming. In future we will witness more extreme weather events that will result in devastating floods. "Our analysis also shows that a rise in mean sea level rise will significantly increase the risk of coastal flooding in the future. The data we have recovered from the hours around Storm Éowyn shows just how narrowly tens of thousands of people avoided tidal inundation and threats to cities, towns and coastal communities. It is hard to imagine how narrowly we avoided unprecedented storm surge flooding and an inundation, in particular in towns and cities." Dr Niall Madden, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at University of Galway, said: "In spite of how devastating Storm Éowyn was, in an odd way, we were incredibly lucky. The worst of the storm surge coincided with a low and ebbing tide. Had it hit just a few hours earlier, on a full or flooding tide, Galway could have been dealing with a double disaster of record high winds and record high flooding." In this episode of the EY CEO Outlook podcast, Danny McCoy, CEO of Ibec, discusses with host Richard Curran his early influences, his approach to leadership, and his vision for Ireland's economy.Danny McCoy's career showcases a journey driven by a passion for economics and a deep understanding of Ireland's evolving socio-economic landscape. Growing up in Tuam, County Galway, during challenging economic times, he witnessed firsthand the effects of industrial decline and small business struggles, which shaped his interest in economics. After a successful academic and analytical career at institutions like the Central Bank, ESRI, and Oxford, Danny transitioned to a leadership role at Ibec, where he has championed Irish business and employers through times of economic uncertainty and growth. They also discuss:Background and Career Path: Danny grew up in Tuam and was influenced by the economic challenges of the 1970s and 80s. He was inspired by the role of economists and his love of business subjects, led him to study in Galway and future roles in the Central Bank, ESRI, and academia.Joining Ibec: Danny joined Ibec in 2005 and became CEO in 2009 during Ireland's economic recession. He worked hard to integrate the “business” aspect as a strong counterpart to the “employer” identity within Ibec.Leadership Challenges and Achievements: Danny was instrumental in turning around Ibec's finances, addressing a pension deficit which transformed Ibec into a sustainable organisation. Today, Ibec has a €50 million turnover organisation with 330 staff, 10 locations, and 39 brands. He was a strong advocate for optimism during Ireland's economic recovery in the late 2000s.Economic Views: He highlights the need to focus on real issues and long-term solutions, such as energy, infrastructure, and social policies. He controversially challenges the idea of a “cost of living crisis,” suggesting support should go to those who truly need it.Leadership Philosophy: Danny believes good leadership means making bold decisions, focusing on long-term goals, and prioritising lasting impact over short-term approval and follows the motto: "No good turn goes unpunished."Future Outlook: Danny emphasises challenges like housing, sustainable energy, and global economic shifts. And urges Ireland to use its resources wisely and plan responsibly for the future.

An cumadóir Johnny Duhan é an té a báthadh i nGaillimh inniu. Johnny Duhan, the well-known songwriter, is the man who drowned this morning after swimming at Head Beach in Bearna, County Galway. Is é Johnny Duhan, an cumadóir amhrán aitheanta, an fear a báthadh ar maidin tar éis sul ag snámh ag Trá na gCeannn i mBearna, Contae na Gaillimhe. The most popular song he composed was 'The Voyage', a well-known song which was covered by Christy Moore and had an album around it. ‘The Voyage' é an t-amhrán ba mhó tóir dár chum sé, amhrán aitheanta a chas Christy Moore agus a chuir album timpeall air. Johnny Duhan is originally from Limerick but settled in Bearna a few years ago. As Luimneach ó dhúchas do Johnny Duhan ach chuir sé faoi i mBearna roinnt blianta ó shin. He is survived by his wife Maureen, their five children, grandchildren and other relatives. Maireann a bhean chéile Maureen, a gcúigear páistí, garchlann agus gaolta eile. An extensive search began off the coast of Galway when he did not return home after his usual morning swim. Thosaigh cuardach cuimsitheach amach ó chósta na Gaillimhe nuair nár fhill sé abhaile tar éis dó dul ag snámh ar maidin, mar ba ghnách dó. It was not long after that that it came to light that another person, a woman in her thirties, was also missing from Head Beach. Níorbh fhada ina dhiaidh sin gur tháinig sé chun solais go raibh duine eile, bean sna tríochadaí, ar iarraidh freisin ar Thrá na gCeann. The emergency services were called when she did not arrive at work as expected. Cuireadh fios ar na seirbhísí éigeandála nuair nár tháinig sí ag an obair mar a raibh súil leí. The search was carried out by the Coast Guard, the RNLI and Civil Defense teams. Chuaigh an Garda Cósta, an RNLI agus buíonta den Chosaint Sibhialta i mbun an chuardaigh. Local people and some small boats came to help in the search, by land and by sea. Tháinig daoine áitiúla agus roinnt bád beag i gcabhair ar an gcuardach, ar thír agus ar muir. A body was found in the water this afternoon near Cuan Roisín between Bearna and Bóthar na Trá, some time west of the city. Thángthas ar chorp san uisce tráthnóna gar do Chuan Roisín idir Bhearna agus Bhóthar na Trá, tamall siar ón gcathair. It is an unusual incident for two people who did not know each other to be missing from the same place, and Gardaí are trying to understand how the events of the morning unfolded.. Eachtra neamhghnáthach é beirt nach raibh aithne ar a chéile bheith ar iarraidh ón láthair chéanna, agus tá Gardaí ag iarraidh a thuiscint cé mar a thit imeachtaí na maidne amach.. It was calm weather and a calm sea in the morning, but the fog of the day hindered the search. Aimsir chiúin agus farraige chalm a bhí ann ar maidin, ach chuir ceo an lae as don chuardach. The search for the woman had to be suspended at nightfall, but will begin again at sunrise. B'éigean an cuardach don bhean a chur ar fionraí le titim na hoíche, ach tosófar ina bhun arís le héirí na gréine. Local people are gathering early in the morning to search the shore between Bearna and An Spidéal Tá daoine áitiúla ag bailiú le chéile go moch ar maidin le dul ag cuardach an chladaigh idir Bhearna agus An Spidéal

Jennifer Deibel: Hi Jenny. Thanks so much for having me. I'm looking forward to chatting. Jenny Wheeler: These Irish stories are both best sellers and award winners.  How did you come to start on the Irish story thread? Jennifer Deibel: It all feels like it happened by accident, but I believe everything happens by design. My husband and I had lived in County Donegal for two years as students. We were studying the language and the culture. My husband had fallen in love with all things Celtic after spending a summer abroad in Wales during university. We spent two years there and when we came back I was expecting our first baby. He went into graduate school in Texas and I was struggling to process all we had experienced in those two years. An Irish American girl moves to Donegal The idea for what would eventually become my debut novel, A Dance in Donegal, came to me, a story about an Irish American girl who moves to rural Donegal to teach. I started writing it then and of course once my baby was born, it sat for a very long time. It took about 15 years for me to actually finish the whole manuscript. During which time we moved back to Ireland and lived in County Galway. While we were there, we had our son and I heard about a parenting website that was starting up called The Better Mom and they were lo...

Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John Morley talks to Rosina Joyce, Biodiversity Officer with Galway County Council, about Galway landowners being offered ‘hassle-free' support to create more space for nature on their land. == Did you know… · The Hare's Corner initiative, coordinated by Burren-based landscape charity Burrenbeo Trust and the Biodiversity Office of Galway County Council, is launching a funding scheme to support landowners and community groups in undertaking nature-positive measures on their lands. · The Hare's Corner project offers landowners 'hassle-free' support to carry out simple but impactful actions for biodiversity, such as creating a wildlife pond, native mini-woodland, heritage mini-orchard with apple trees, or a bespoke 'plan for nature' or 'peatland plan' for their site. · The Hare's Corner project in Co. Galway in 2024 will be funded by Galway County through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund by National Parks and Wildlife Service and by Greencoat Renewables PLC. Why is it important for landowners to create space for nature on their land? · Having access to nature has been shown to have a number of benefits for human health and well-being. · Creating space for nature can also help to make land more sustainable in the long term. For example, planting trees can help to reduce soil erosion and improve air quality. · County Galway has a rich natural heritage, and creating space for nature helps to support biodiversity What can I do to help create space for nature on land? · You don't have to create a nature reserve overnight. Start with a small project and build on your success. · Take a walk around your property and observe what kind of existing habitat you have (trees, hedges, ponds, etc.) Make note of any areas that could be improved for wildlife. · Plant native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers to create a food source and habitat for pollinators (bees, butterflies) and birds. Centripetal, the global leader in intelligence powered cybersecurity, has announced that it has deployed its CleanINTERNET solution into Platform 94, delivering an advanced intelligence-driven cyber defence strategy. Cybersecurity vendors are struggling to keep up with the virulence and complexity of today's cyber threats, and it is only by harnessing the totality of threat intelligence globally, that enterprises can hope to turn the tide and gain the upper hand. For over 30 years, Platform 94 has acted as a growth incubator for more than 300 emerging technology companies in County Galway and across the West of Ireland. Having dozens of different organisations under the same roof, operating on a centralised network, required a unique approach to Cybersecurity. Platform94 made the decision to team up with Centripetal to provide a proactive intelligence based cybersecurity solution for all their members. With Centripetal's CleanINTERNET security solution, Platform94 is able to tap into threat intelligence from around the world and provide the strongest cybersecurity shield to all of their members. CleanINTERNET has already successfully blocked significant events for Platform 94, including active reconnaissance by IPs associated with the Mirai botnet malware, Cobalt Strike beaconing, and other outbound connections related to phishing and malvertising domains. The Mirai bot reconnaissance poses notable concerns, particularly in co-working spaces, characterised by a diverse array of interconnected devices such as printers, webcams, phones, and other peripherals. This underscores the importance of CleanINTERNET in strengthening defences against potential threats throughout the entire network ecosystem. "With Centripetal's CleanINTERNET solution, Platform 94 is taking a significant stride in strengthening our pledge to offer a proactive cybersecurity shield for our valued members," expressed Noreen Conway, Platform 94's Interim CEO. "This collaboration echoes our commitment to promote the growth and security of the technology community in Galway and the broader West of Ireland." In 2023 it was reported that almost one in five Irish firms experienced a significant cyber attack or data breach in 2022. With this staggering statistic it was crucial for Platform 94 to seek out support and protection from a trusted intelligence driven cybersecurity firm. "We're pleased that Platform 94 selected Centripetal to take control of their cybersecurity posture by incorporating real-time intelligence into how they defend themselves," said Dave Silke, European MD at Centripetal. "This effort will strengthen Ireland's position as the leading hub for technology innovation and digital security. By combining our resources and knowledge, Centripetal and Platform 94 demonstrate how cybersecurity infrastructure can be enhanced across the country." Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John spoke to Iarla Moran, Regional Operations and Maintenance manager Northwest with Uisce Eireann about their ‘Think Before You Flush Campaign.     Did you know…   The ‘Dirty Dozen' are the top twelve items that are incorrectly flushed down Irish toilets such as wipes, cotton pads, dental floss and food items.   More than 1 in 10 people still admit to flushing wipes down the toilet- the under 35 age category is most likely to do so, with a third of under 35's admitting to flushing ‘Dirty Dozen' items down the toilet.   Wipes-even ones made with biodegradable materials-don't decompose when flushed and can end up on our beaches.   The clogging up or damage to pipes that's caused through ‘Dirty Dozen' items is called ‘Ragging.'   Dental floss is also more likely to build up in machinery in wastewater processes and cause it to breakdown.   Galway City is one of seventeen ‘Think Before you Flush' Communities, alongside Gort in County Galway.     Why is disposing of waste in bins as opposed to toilets so important? Sewage related litter can end up as far as streams, rivers and beaches and cause a threat to seabirds who could mistake waste, particularly plastic, for food.   Wet wipes and sanitary products can cause blockages and damage to wastewater treatment processes, which are costly to remove and lead to emergency water overflows that can flood homes and back gardens.   Overflows and blockages can also happen in households and cause issues with septic tanks.     What can I do to help support the campaign? Put a bin in your bathroom for ‘Dirty Dozen' items   Use reusable options-such as facial cloths and reusable cotton pads.   Use plastic free items where possible and dispose of them in the general waste bin.   Where possible, make DIY alternatives like makeup remover and toner.   Take the ‘Think Before you flush' campaign pledge.     Here's a few websites if you want to know more!
