Two great international visitors recently led to two great sets of podcast chats!! Dr Kim Chi (Vancouver), and Dr Carmen Mir (Valencia) were in Melbourne to speak at the PROSPECT Meeting (see links below). We grabbed Kim along with Prof Arun Azad (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne), and Dr Louise Kostos (also Peter Mac), to overlook some hot topics in mHSPC. And then a cracking chat with Carmen along with two Europeans doing Urology Fellowship training in Melbourne - Dr Christa Babst (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre/Switzerland), and Dr Marta Alves (Royal Melbourne Hospital/Barcelona). Carmen had also done a Fellowship in Melbourne at Austin Health so could give some great perspectives. Let food be thy medicine. This has been known for thousands and thousands of years. And yet somehow we have let Big Food and their toxic processed food run riot with our health. Today's guest has done incredible research on how small, easily achievable adjustments to calcium and protein intake can reduce an elderly person's risk of hip fracture, and therefore likelihood of early mortality, by nearly 50%. The message of today's show is that the more real food we can provide ourselves and our family, the stronger, healthier and longer we are going to live together. Dr. Sandra Iuliano is a renowned expert in integrative and functional medicine, specialising in personalised health approaches that address the root causes of chronic conditions. She is also a researcher at the University of Melbourne, based at Austin Health, where her work focuses on the benefits of improved nutrition in reducing falls and fracture risk in the elderly, particularly those in aged care. Diabetes affects one in 20 people. An important initiative to set up a ‘virtual' emergency department designed for people living with diabetes has launched in Melbourne, Victoria during National Diabetes Week, with the aim of preventing unnecessary trips to hospital. The Victorian Virtual Emergency Department-Diabetes Service will be added to the existing Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) giving patients 24/7 online video access to emergency nurses and doctors. As a world first, this new model of care will add a roster of diabetes specialists on weekend and evening shifts, when diabetes patients are most likely to present to a hospital emergency department. Joining the podcast to talk about this new initiative is endocrinologist Professor Elif Ekinci, Director of Diabetes at Austin Health, Head of Department of Medicine at University of Melbourne, and Director of the Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations(ACADI). ACADI was established in 2022 through MRFF funding from the Australian Government's Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) program, delivered by MTPConnect. Also joining the discussion is Northern Health's Dr Loren Sher, an emergency specialist who led development of Australia's first virtual emergency department model, now operating as a Victorian state-wide service. Loren has been instrumental in working with Elif to get the diabetes service up and running. Hosts are Caroline Duell, MTPConnect's Director Media and Communications and Lauren Kelly, Senior Director of the TTRA program.

Have you ever noticed that mental health wards rarely have flowers compared to other wards like those in cancer and children's hospitals? "Glasshouse," a novel by Anne Buist and Graeme Simsion, aims to transform mental health in Australia by highlighting the challenges within mental health services, the experiences of mental health workers, and the patients they strive to help and heal. The authors take us inside the Menzies Mental Health Service, breaking the silence about the realities of being a mental health worker and raising the conversation about what Australia needs to disrupt and transform mental health prevention and treatment.I found "Glasshouse" at the airport and finished it when I landed in San Francisco; I couldn't put it down. As Anne and Graeme say, people in glass houses should not throw stones.Listen to Anne and Graeme discuss their new book, written together. I was able to snag them for an hour while they were on the Great Australian Bookshop Tour, visiting 400 bookshops over four months. To create an opportunity for change, one must walk in the shoes of all those they are writing about. We discuss their upcoming sequel, introducing their characters to neuroscience, early life experiences, and technology. We'll know mental health treatment has been transformed when all mental health hospitals and wards are part of architecturally designed buildings filled with paintings and flowers. In these spaces, people are treated as humans undergoing multi-generational experiences. If there is a place where flowers are needed, this is it.Anne Buist is the Chair of Women's Mental Health at the University of Melbourne, based at Austin Health, with over 30 years of clinical and research experience in perinatal psychiatry, including directing mother-baby units for much of this time. We made you wait for this one! Why you may have trouble sleeping as you age and what you can do about. Do you happen to know what the "on-off" switch for sleep is in your brain? We did not. But now we do. Listen now to learn more about your sleep and how to make it better! As you know in our last episode we interviewed a young researcher Mark Czeisler who was part of the COPE Initiative dealing with young adults and COVID. If you missed this episode, here is a link. While doing research on Mark we realized that he has significant experience in the study of sleep! We got excited. We know very few people our age who do not have some sleep issues! (his credentials are below)So, although this has very little to do with building healthy relationships with our young adult children, we thought this would be a great benefit to our listeners. We talk about:Why we are waking up in the middle of the night and not able to fall back to sleepThe myth of needing less sleep as we ageThe science behind sleepWhat heredity might have to do with sleepHis father's role as the Director of the Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and how that translate to their family's sleep habits! The role of Melatonin and how we are all using it completely wrong!Sleep meds to consider or notDo sleep studies or doctors make a difference and when might you need oneTips for changing it all - and a lot of it has to do with that darn "blue light"Credentials:Mark, in addition to being a graduate student researching at the School of Psychological Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University, he is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute for Breathing and Sleep (IBAS) at Austin Health. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Neurobiology with a minor in Global Health and Health Policy from Harvard College.Currently, he is a member of the Lichtman Lab, part of the Harvard Brain Science Initiative and is studying sleep physiology. And the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Mark's father, Charles Czeisler, PHD MD, is a Professor of Sleep Medicine, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders in the Departments of Medicine and Neurology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Thanks again to Connie Gorant Fisher, our audio engineer.Support us:Buy us a coffee: LINK HEREBuy a mug: LINK HERESome deals for listeners:Shapermint.comDenise's favorite shape-wear company.
