Host Jeremy C. Park interviews Graham Thomas, Chief Community and Government Affairs Officer for tnAchieves, a nonprofit organization focused on building Tennessee's future workforce, one student at a time. The organization has a range of programs to help students, especially first-generation college students, succeed in their post-secondary education and take first steps in their career through structured supports and mentoring. During the interview, Graham discusses the organization's mentorship programs and their impact on increasing graduation rates and workforce development. The conversation concludes with details about their new workforce mentorship program aimed at connecting students with mentors to prepare them for employment by early 2026. The organization is seeking adult mentors in various professions across Tennessee to spend a small amount of time with students to help open their eyes to new career possibilities.SummarytnAchieves: College Success Initiative - Graham Thomas, Chief Community and Government Affairs Officer at tnAchieves, discusses the organization's mission and impact. Graham explains how tnAchieves, which predates the Tennessee Promise program, focuses on helping students enroll in and succeed in post-secondary education, particularly for first-generation college students. He highlights the organization's traditional access mentorship program, which has been running for 17 years, and the program's success in increasing graduation rates from 5-6% to 41% for vulnerable populations and notes that 53,000 alumni have graduated, with 84.7% choosing to stay in Tennessee. The discussion emphasizes the economic benefits and workforce development implications of tnAchieves' work, as well as the organization's role in breaking generational cycles of educational disadvantage.tnAchieves Community Service Impact - Graham talks about the importance of community service with tnAchieves, highlighting its community service requirement where students provide 8 hours of service per semester, resulting in over 600,000 hours of community service completed by scholarship recipients since the program's inception 17 years ago. The program, which began as a privately funded initiative, now is known to be the largest community service organization in the state.Enhancing Student Career Pathways - Graham discusses their efforts to address the gap between students who want to transfer after earning their two-year degree and those who enter the workforce. He explains that while the transfer rate has improved from 15% to 50% with their transfer program, they are now focusing on supporting students who choose to enter the workforce. Graham highlights the success of job shadowing opportunities at various companies, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Eastman, and announces the launch of a new workforce mentorship program to provide personalized guidance to students as they approach graduation.Rural-Urban Mentorship Program Initiative - The workforce mentorship program aims to connect students, including those in rural Tennessee, with adult mentors working in their careers of interest to offer basic guidance and support. Graham explains that while geographical proximity is not the primary focus, the program will prioritize subject matter expertise and career fields to provide valuable mentorship opportunities.Mentorship Initiative for Student Success - Graham and Jeremy discuss the need for 5,000 mentors, with over 700 needed in Memphis alone, to support local students. Graham emphasizes the importance of life advice and mentorship, promising comprehensive training and support for mentors. Jeremy highlights the value of exposing students to various career paths and the opportunity for businesses to recruit young professionals through mentorship. Graham stresses the significance of mentorship in guiding students and the availability of the staff for ongoing support. Jeremy adds that volunteering in such programs often brings unexpected personal benefits to mentors, too.tnAchieves Workforce Mentorship Initiative - Graham discusses the program's goal of pairing 5,000 students with mentors by early December 2025 so the mentorship can begin in early 2026. He provides the website (http://www.tnachieves.org) and phone number (615-604-1306) for interested participants to sign up and learn more. The program aims to prepare students for college or employment by early 2026, with the next steps involving training and matching students with mentors to help them achieve their educational and career goals.Visit https://www.tnachieves.org or call 615-604-1306 to learn more and become a mentor.

Bujie – Tour Manager, Production Pro & All-Around Rockstar of HospitalityFrom skate shops to stadiums, Bujie has built an extraordinary life doing what she loves most — taking care of people and keeping the show running no matter what. Known for her tireless work ethic, organization, and infectious positivity, she's spent more than two decades behind the scenes of some of rock's biggest tours and events, making the impossible look easy. Her live event journey began unexpectedly — after years of running successful retail and skate park businesses in Michigan, she volunteered at a local music festival and quickly discovered her knack for advancing shows and managing artists. That led to a full-time career in live production and tour management, working with legends including Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Deep Purple, Marilyn Manson, and The Guess Who.For nearly a decade, Bujie was a key part of Alice Cooper's touring family, overseeing every detail of hospitality, logistics, and VIP experiences — and even assisting Johnny Depp during Cooper's annual Christmas Pudding charity event in Phoenix. From private planes with holes mid-flight to backstage chaos and heartwarming moments with rock icons, she's seen it all — and handled it all with grace, humor, and a clipboard full of color-coded spreadsheets. When she's not on tour, you'll find her back home in Michigan working at her local metropark (she'll proudly tell you she's obsessed with mowing grass), hiking, or volunteering with charities close to her heart, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Wounded Warrior Project.“I'm just an ordinary girl with an extraordinary life,” she says — but anyone who's worked with her knows there's nothing ordinary about her drive, heart, and hustle. Her motto? “Always be the hardest worker in the room.”This Episode is brought to you by Lightswitch

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. St. Jude, founded by Danny Thomas in 1962, leads the fight against childhood cancer and life-threatening diseases. Turning research breakthroughs into lifesaving treatment for children in the U.S. and worldwide. Senior Area Advisor, Sara Alisuag, joins us with more. Sara Alisuag: At St. Jude, children with the toughest pediatric cases receive world-class care while researchers invest in cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs. Families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food, so they can focus entirely on helping their child heal. Treatments developed at St. Jude have helped raise survival rates for childhood cancer in the U.S., where now 4 out of 5 children survive. While the hospital is based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude supports children worldwide, including right here in Utah. We share our research and findings freely with hospitals and doctors everywhere, including Primary Children's Hospital and University of Utah Hospitals, so more children can benefit. Locally, I'm helping raise awareness of how St. Jude supports families, children, and hospitals. From the St. Jude Dream Home Showplace to the Country Cares Radiothon in Salt Lake City, there are always ways for our community to get involved and make a difference. The Long-Term Impact of Generous Lives with Sharon Epps

MoneyWise on Oneplace.com

The most generous people give something money can't buy—their time, their presence, and their love.Generosity reaches far beyond finances. It shapes hearts, strengthens families, and builds communities of grace. Today, Sharon Epps joins us to talk about the long-term impact of generous living.Sharon Epps is the President of Kingdom Advisors, FaithFi's parent organization. Kingdom Advisors serves the broad Christian financial industry by educating and equipping professionals to integrate biblical wisdom and financial expertise.A Simple Question That Changes EverythingIf you've ever wondered what true generosity looks like, it's often simpler—and closer to home—than we think. Generosity isn't measured by dollar amounts or estate plans; it's written on the faces and in the actions of people who live with open hearts. In fact, if you ask someone a simple question like this, you will move their hearts more than you know:“Think about the most generous person you know. What do they look like? What's their countenance? Their posture?”Take a moment to picture them. Chances are, their face lights up your mind's eye. They're probably joyful, peaceful, genuine—and not necessarily wealthy. That's because generosity is about heart, not income. It's about presence, not possessions. When we make generosity personal, it changes us. We stop thinking in abstract ideas and start remembering real people who gave freely of themselves—and in doing so, reflected the heart of Christ. When this question is asked, the answers are often the same: a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle—someone who gave of themselves through love, laughter, and listening. These aren't people who built foundations or donated millions. They modeled generosity through steady love and consistency. That's what long-term generosity looks like. It starts at home and grows outward.Redefining Long-Term ImpactWhen we hear “long-term impact,” our minds often jump to wills, trusts, or endowments. Those are important tools, but they're not the whole story. True long-term impact happens when we invest our lives, not just our assets.Every day, we have the chance to sow generosity through acts of service, hospitality, and encouragement. These simple seeds—when planted faithfully—bear fruit that outlasts any financial gift because they grow in people's hearts. If you long to leave a legacy of generosity, start small.Serve one person this week. Ask God to show you where you can listen, encourage, or help.Be steady and intentional. Generosity grows through daily habits, not grand gestures.Practice generosity with time and words. The way you invest relationally today can change someone's tomorrow.Over time, those small acts of faithfulness will shape the kind of life others remember as generous.Generosity is most powerful when it's shared. Families that give together cultivate hearts that reflect God's heart. Take your children with you when you serve at a food pantry. Let them see generosity in action. Talk about giving not as an obligation but as a joyful response to God's grace.A Practical Tool for GivingOne practical way to make giving intentional is through a donor-advised fund—or what our friends at the National Christian Foundation call a Giving Fund. It's like a charitable checking account where you can deposit money now and prayerfully decide later how to distribute it.Opening one is quick and easy, and it's a great way to involve your children or grandchildren in deciding where to give. You can learn more or start one in under five minutes at FaithFi.com/NCF.Generosity Flows Toward PeopleIn the end, generosity isn't about how much we give—it's about who we're becoming. It's not just an act; it's a lifestyle. When our generosity flows toward people instead of possessions, we participate in God's ongoing story of redemption. That's the kind of impact that lasts far beyond our lifetime. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I really want to honor God with my giving. I've been thinking about donating to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and to my local church. Should I split my giving between the two, or focus everything on my church?I called about Qualified Charitable Distributions before, and your explanation helped—but I'm still not sure I understand them. At age 70, it seems like you lose out on any interest or growth from that money, and you can't take a tax deduction. So why would anyone do a QCD at that age? Would it ever make sense to take money from a Roth IRA instead? And are there income levels where a QCD just doesn't make sense? How can I strike the right balance between managing my money wisely and living with radical generosity?I have about $100,000 invested across the S&P 500, NASDAQ, and Dow, but I'm wondering if that's too risky. Would it be safer to put everything into the S&P 500, or is there a better approach? At 76, should I shift more into bonds—and if so, what kind would you recommend?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)National Christian Foundation (NCF)Redeeming Money: How God Reveals and Reorients Our Hearts by Paul David TrippWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000. Today, Earth's Mightiest Critics look back on the life of a comedy legend with an unconventional panel review of John Candy: I Like Me!Colin Hanks' presents a sprawling and thoroughly moving documentary about the star of SCTV, Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and dozens more comedy classics.Featuring interviews with co-stars, family, and friends, I Like Me paints a portrait of a man haunted by childhood tragedy who spent the rest of his life taking care of others (be it direct altruism or simply by making them laugh)--possibly to the detriment of his own well being. Far from a downer, this film is a celebration of life in the truest sense.Executive Producer Ryan Reynolds and friends recently screened the film at the Chicago Theatre, and several members of the EMC were there. Unfortunately, they couldn't all get together for roundtable, so Ian talked with Don, Cati, and David individually about several aspects of the doc, including its status as one of the best films this decade; the bizarrely performative nature of the Chicago Theatre Q&A; and the rise of the Celebrity Documentary genre.John Candy: I Like Me is now streaming on Amazon Prime.Support Kicking the Seat on Patreon, subscribe to us on YouTube, and follow us at:XLetterboxdInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the John Candy: I Like Me (2025) trailer. All proceeds from the I Like Me screening tour support St. Jude Children's Children's Research Hospital. Send us a textWhat happens when life's greatest challenge becomes your greatest stepping stone? In this powerful conversation, Darren Warren, President and CEO of Stor-Mor Portable Buildings, shares his remarkable journey from a 16-year-old cancer patient with a 40% survival rate to becoming an innovative leader in the shed industry.Darren's story begins in 1998 when his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis led his father to start building portable sheds—allowing young Darren to participate in the family business while undergoing 120 chemotherapy treatments at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. What started as a solution to a family crisis evolved into a passion and eventually, industry leadership with a people-first approach."It's our people, it's our people, it's our people," Darren emphasizes as the true secret to Stor-Mor's success. This isn't just a catchphrase but a deeply held belief that has shaped their business decisions—including the surprising choice to dismantle their in-house online sales department to funnel leads to their dealers instead, resulting in a $1 million sales increase in just one month. The conversation dives into the shed industry's evolution beyond "just building boxes," exploring vertical integration, product diversification into post-frame buildings and carports, and the crucial balance between online and brick-and-mortar sales. Darren warns against the "race to the bottom" pricing strategies while advocating for quality, service, and innovation as the path forward.Perhaps most compelling is Darren's unwavering commitment to purpose beyond profit. "Between God and St. Jude, I'm here," he states, explaining why charitable initiatives remain central to Stor-Mor's identity. This commitment extends to his vision for the industry—calling for greater collaboration among competitors to establish ethical practices and combat growing fraud concerns.Whether you're in the shed industry or simply appreciate stories of resilience and purpose-driven leadership, this episode offers valuable insights on transforming personal challenges into stepping stones for helping others. In this episode, we talk with two authors who have papers featured in the special issue of the Journal of Genetic Counseling on Research Methods in Genetic Counseling. In the first segment we explore implementation science and its utilization in bridging the gap between research and clinical practice. In our second segment, we talk to an author about retrospective chart reviews and the benefits and drawbacks of this methodology.   Segment 1: A guide to utilizing implementation science for genetic counseling   Alanna Kulchak Rahm is a certified genetic counselor and implementation scientist with a PhD in Health and Behavioral Science. She has spent her career specializing in the implementation of genomics and precision health in healthcare systems. For over 25 years, she has conducted research on the utilization of genetic information by individuals and healthcare systems, new paradigms for identifying individuals with genomic risk, and new service delivery models for genomic testing. She has been a driver for the integration of implementation science and patient engagement to understand and study the integration of genomics into the learning health system, and is a tireless advocate of implementation science in genetic counseling. She has participated in and led many workshops and trainings on implementation science in genetics, serving as a faculty mentor for the NIH Training in Dissemination and Implementation Research in Cancer (TIDIRC) and recently as a co-lead of the Training in Dissemination and Implementation Research in Genomics and Precision Public Health (TIDIR-GPPH). She is currently a Program Director in the Division of Genomic Medicine at the National Human Genome Institute (NHGRI) where she directs the Network of Genomics-Enabled Learning Health Systems and other programs and continues to advance the integration of implementation science and genomics.   In this segment we discuss: Implementation science (IS) as a bridge between research and clinical practice in genetic counseling Misconceptions about IS, key frameworks like RE-AIM, and practical applications in daily work Using IS to identify and reduce inequities in genomic medicine Future integration of IS into training, research, and professional practice Link to the 2025 annual conference on dissemination and implementation    Segment 2: Leveraging hindsight: A retrospective chart review how-to for genetic counselors   Dr. Ramsey is the Section Chief of Individualized Therapeutics in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Innovation at Children's Mercy. She is leading the implementation of a pharmacogenomics program that is fully integrated with the electronic health record, developing model-informed decision support for several medications, and Co-director of their Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship Program. Before joining Children's Mercy, Dr. Ramsey was an Associate Professor and co-director of the Genetic Pharmacology Service at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship in Pharmacogenetics at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and received her PhD in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology and Genetics from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Dr. Ramsey is interested in all aspects of pharmacogenetics, from basic research to implementation in patient care.   In this segment we discuss: The role of retrospective chart reviews in genetic counseling research Common pitfalls such as unclear aims, time demands, and data extraction challenges Strategies for success, including SOPs, REDCap, and multidisciplinary collaboration Lessons learned on refining criteria, ensuring data quality, and team engagement   Would you like to nominate a JoGC article to be featured in the show? We also discuss how to influence our environments at every level, not just from the top.About My GuestFor over 20 years, Erin Herman has worked with executive teams across the globe, including Fortune 500 companies, to lead change that actually sticks. Her leadership career has taken her from the boardrooms of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to the global halls of the United Nations. Along the way, she's built partnerships that created lasting impact—like securing a $300 million commitment to support pediatric research, one of the largest gifts ever made to a children's hospital. One of the projects she's most proud of is the Learning Passport—a digital education platform she co-created with Microsoft and Cambridge University. It now reaches children in more than 40 countries and was named one of TIME's 100 Best Inventions. It's also been ranked the third most influential project in the world by PMI.Erin has spoken at the UN General Assembly, led global initiatives across China, Finland, Italy, and South Africa, and been featured by organizations like the University of Missouri's Bloch School of Business. But at the heart of everything she does is a single goal: helping people lead with more humanity.Whether she's working with C-suite leaders navigating change or high-achieving women ready to stop shrinking and start leading, her work is about creating the kind of transformation that resonates—long after the keynote ends.~Connect with Erin:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-herman-97832217/ Instagram: @eebherm Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/erin.beaton.18 Podvantage Page: https://erin.podvantage.ai/ Website: https://theerinherman.com/~Connect with Kim and The Impostor Syndrome Files:Join the free Impostor Syndrome Challenge:https://www.kimmeninger.com/challengeLearn more about the Leading Humans discussion group:https://www.kimmeninger.com/leadinghumansgroupJoin the Slack channel to learn from, connect with and support other professionals: https://forms.gle/Ts4Vg4Nx4HDnTVUC6Join the Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadinghumansSchedule time to speak with Kim Meninger directly about your questions/challenges: https://bookme.name/ExecCareer/strategy-sessionConnect on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimmeninger/Website:https://kimmeninger.com

And I understand the cultural differences, but people were trying to make me palatable to a country music audience.” - Mickey Guyton “Country music literally fell into my lap. “It was a God thing. It was a spiritual thing. It chose me.” - Mickey Guyton “I was like, ‘Why do you think country music isn’t working for me?’ And my husband was like, ‘Because you’re running away from everything that makes you different. Country music is three chords and the truth. Why aren’t you leaning into that?’” - Mickey Guyton “I’m not only pursuing a career for myself, but pursuing a career for people that come after me. How can I help them? This may never happen for me, but how can I help the people that are coming up after me?” – Mickey Guyton “I would say to anyone out there who is struggling to change either physically or mentally or emotionally that you really need to dig deep and find what your “why” is. You are going to have to rely on that every single day when it’s hard.” - Lea Hurley “I’m a major dessert person, so I figured out that I can make nut butter taste like the desserts that I was missing, but still have all the things that I was allowed to have.” - Lea Hurley “I feel like you just have to be plugged into Him, plugged into the Word all the time, so that you can receive what He’s trying to tell you and to be open to where it might come from.” - Lea Hurley ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
