On this week's podcast, we chat about what happened in Corrie between the 19th and the 23rd January (Episodes #11,777 - 11,781). This week, Megan revealed to Will that she's carrying his baby - and rather than running a mile (and not just in the athletics sense!), Will doubles down on his commitment to the secret affair. But is Megan REALLY that into him, and what will the revelation that Will isn't the first boy she's had a relationship with change things? Meanwhile, Lisa and Carla got back together on Wednesday, but what did we make of the speed that everything fell back into place for them? Also this week, Jodie continues to spin the truth about her past to Shona, a gullible Tyrone falls for Carl's lies and we discover that Roy's phone friend may not be quite who they seem... It was another week without much in the way of Corrie news this week, so we gave The Kabin a miss again, but we still had plenty of emails to delve into in the feedback segment. Earlier this evening, Coronation Street and Emmerdale fans across the UK were united in anticipation as the ultimate soap crossover finally exploded onto our screens. Two worlds collided in a spectacular stunt that saw Billy tragically meet his maker (and, we assume, enjoy a heavenly rave-up with Paul), while Carl's fate - and the survival of Shona's baby - remain agonisingly up in the air. There was absolutely no chance we were waiting until the weekend to unpack this one, so here are our immediate reactions: what we loved, what we might have liked to have seen but didn't, and just what on earth we think might happen next after one of the most talked about nights in soap for years.

Hunger Strike in English PrisonsIn English prisons five people, imprisoned under new repressive laws targeted at pro-Palestinian activists, are on hunger strike. Several of them will have been on hunger strike now for over 50 days. At the weekend and each day since, protests have taken place across the island of Ireland and in Britain. Irish republicans have a natural affinity with those who use hunger strike in protest against inhumane prison conditions and to advance democratic aims. The use of hunger strike by political prisoners following the Rising and during the Tan and Civil Wars and in the North is well documented.Grace – just hold me in your arms …Next year the judicial review, taken by the Moore St. Preservation Trust, will be held in the Dublin High Court to challenge the Irish government's support for the plans of the developer - Hammerson – to demolish much of the historic 1916 Moore St. battlefield site.16 Moore St. is where the leaders of the 1916 Rising held their last meeting and where the decision to surrender was taken to prevent further civilian loss of life.Among those present was Joseph Plunkett who was centrally involved in the planning of the 1916 Rising. He was Director of Military Operations in the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was also a member of that organisations Military Council. He was a signatory of the Proclamation and although heavily bandaged as a result of medical operations in early April, Plunkett spent Easter week in the GPO. A bleak Christmas for PalestiniansThe story of Christmas and the birth of Jesus in a stable, as Mary and Joseph sought shelter, is known by billions around the world – even by those of other faiths and none. Christmas will be celebrated – presents given – and many will go to their respective places of worship to remember the child born in poverty, surrounded by a loving family and animals. But for the people of Palestine, surviving in the occupied Palestinian Territories, this Christmas thousands of families will be separated from their loved ones, many of them children, held illegally in Israeli prisons. In the Gaza Strip families will mourn the 20,000 babies and children killed in Israel's genocidal war and the many more left with life changing injuries. Children will grieve for the parents who have been killed.

EP 266 - Literacy, Leadership, and the 'AI for the Sake of AI' Trap with Shona Boyd

The 4 am Report

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 20, 2025 40:19

Host Susan Diaz is joined by Shona Boyd, a product manager at Mitratech, a SaaS company, and a proudly AI-curious early adopter, for a grounded conversation about what AI literacy actually means now. They talk about representation, critical thinking, everyday meet-you-where-you-are workflows, shadow AI, enterprise guardrails, and why leaders must stop chasing AI features that don't solve real user problems. Episode summary Susan introduces Shona Boyd - AI-curious early adopter and SaaS product manager—whose mission is to make AI feel less scary and more accessible. Shona shares how her approachable AI philosophy started in product work: she used AI to build audience insights and feedback loops when job seekers weren't willing to do interviews, and quickly realized two things: (1) AI wasn't going away, and (2) there weren't many visible women or people who looked like her leading the conversation. So she raised her hand as an approachable reference point others could learn from. From there, the conversation expands into what AI literacy has evolved into. It's no longer just "which tool should I use?" or "how do I write prompts?" Shona argues that today literacy is about critical thinking, learning how to talk to an LLM like a conversation, and choosing workflows that benefit from AI rather than chasing hype. They also get practical: Shona gives everyday examples (Medicare PDFs, credit card points, life admin) to show how AI can meet you where you are, without requiring you to build agents or become super technical. Finally, Susan and Shona go deep on organizational adoption: why handing out logins without policies is risky, how shadow AI shows up (hello, rogue meeting note-takers), why leadership sponsorship matters, and what companies should stop doing immediately: AI for the sake of AI. Key takeaways Representation changes adoption. When people don't see anyone who looks like them using AI confidently, they're less likely to lean in. Shona chose to be a visible, approachable point of reference for others. AI literacy has shifted. It's no longer mainly about which model or prompt frameworks. It's about: learning the language (LLM, GPT, etc.) staying curious building critical media muscles to evaluate what's true, what's AI, and what needs sources. Workflows aren't just corporate. A workflow is simply: tasks + the path to get them done. Shona's examples show AI can help with day-to-day life admin (PDFs, policies, benefits, points programs), which makes AI feel more approachable fast. The first output is not the final. "I can spot AI content" usually means people are publishing raw first drafts. High-quality AI use looks like: draft → critique → refine → human judgement. What good organizational training is NOT: handing out tool logins with no policy, no guidance on acceptable use, and no understanding of enterprise vs personal security. Shadow AI is already here. People are adding unapproved AI note-takers to meetings and uploading sensitive info into personal accounts. Blanket bans don't work - they push experimentation underground. Adoption needs product thinking. Shona suggests leaders treat internal AI like a product launch: run simple feedback loops (NPS-style checks) analyse usage patterns to find sticking points apply AI where it solves real pain, not where competitors are hyping features. Leadership ownership matters for equity. When AI is run department-by-department, you create "haves and have-nots" (tools, training, access). Top-down support plus safe guardrails reduces inequity and increases psychological safety. Spicy take: stop doing AI for the sake of AI. If you can't explain how an AI feature improves real user life in a non-marketing way, it probably shouldn't ship. Episode highlights [00:01] The 30-day podcast-to-book sprint and why leaders are still showing up in December. [01:14] Shona's origin story: using AI to build audiences and feedback loops in a job board context. [02:17] The visibility gap: not many women / people who looked like her in early AI spaces. [05:55] What AI literacy means now: critical thinking + conversation with an LLM + workflow selection. [07:16] "Workflows" made real: Medicare PDFs and credit card points examples. [10:13] Three essentials: foundational language, curiosity, and critical media literacy. [12:23] What training is NOT: handing out logins with no policy or guardrails. [15:49] Handling fear and resistance with empathy and a human-in-the-loop mindset. [23:27] Product lens on adoption: NPS feedback loops + usage analytics to find real needs. [28:14] Shadow AI: rogue note-takers, personal accounts, and why bans backfire. [31:17] Policies at multiple levels, including interviewing and candidate use of AI. [36:49] "Stop AI for the sake of AI" and the race to ship meaningless features. Her focus is on educating business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs about setting up their finances the right way and strategically keeping taxes in mind, moving beyond basic CFO services to holistic financial planning and legacy building. Shona highlights a major gap: many people lack a dedicated financial planner after leaving corporate life or simply aren't aware of advanced financial strategies.  A critical takeaway from Shona is debunking the misconception that wealth building is something you do only after you become wealthy, or that it costs "so much" to start. She stresses that it takes intention, not a massive bankroll, and encourages people to overcome "money trauma" and apprehension.  Website: www.beyondacountingtax.com LinkedIn: shona-bell Previous Episode: iam1383-accountant-helps-business-owners-accelerate-their-financial-mindset Check out our CEO Hack Buzz Newsletter–our premium newsletter with hacks and nuggets to level up your organization. On this week's podcast, we have a natter about the episodes of Coronation Street shown between the 10th and the 14th November (Episodes #11,711 - 11,716). This week, we were treated to another Kate Brooks patented 'event episode' of Corrie, with all the funny camera effects and timey-wimey shenanigans that they so often entail. This time, it's David and Shona who were under the spotlight, with a half-episode that told the story of their tragic trip to the hospital told directly through the characters' eyes - internal commentary and all. We've seen mixed opinions on this since it aired, and had plenty to say about the format ourselves! Another focus this week was Will's story - when we said that we wanted the Rovers at the heart of Corrie, was a teenage grooming story the sort of thing we were asking for? Not at all, but are we enjoying it nonetheless? Also this week, Fizz bubbles over at work after struggling to run the household with minimal support from wheelchair-bound Tyrone, Kevin nearly loses his car in a game of poker and Joni returns to the Metcalf household - though Tim seems far more occupied with what's going on on Tricia's Insta... Not a whole lot in the way of news to discuss this week - although we do make the time to offer a somewhat cynical look at this week's Corriedale viewer vote - and we round off the show with more of your listener feedback.

There may have only been two trips to Weatherfield this week, but Monday's bombshell was enough to keep us talking for just as long as a regular podcast! Becky Swain is alive! A lot of us had seen it coming, but it was certainly a shock that it happened quite so soon. You may have already heard our initial reactions on the podcast we released earlier this week, so how did we feel about Becky's explanation for where she'd been all this time? Did it hold water, and is she really telling the whole truth? Away from all the Swarla drama, we also had another couple of shockers in the form of Tyrone being hit by a car and Shona revealing she had a bun in the oven. THIS is how you keep twists under wraps until broadcast, Corrie - keep it up! After the Street Talk segment, we head over to The Kabin, where we talk about Corrie at the NTAs and Vicky Myers having to pull out of the upcoming Audience With in Glasgow, and we round things off with some of your immediate Becky bombshell reactions in the feedback section.
