In this week's episode, the writer Jordon Francis tells us about Manchester's African and Caribbean Over 50s clubs in Stretford and Moss Side, where dominoes allow members of the Windrush generation to relax, unwind, and share stories of the old days. It's a lovely story about community building, the importance of storytelling and why it's essential to preserve community spaces, filled with great insights about the game of dominoes itself (Did you know the game of dominoes originated in twelfth century China hundreds of years before it became a cultural phenomenon for the African Caribbean diaspora?) and some lovely details about a show at the Royal Exchange set at a dominoes tournament, centered around its cast telling personal stories about their experiences as black people living in the UK. Thanks to Jordon for joining us on this week's podcast.Recommendations:At Manchester's African and Caribbean social clubs, dominoes are both leisure and lifeline, The Mill Hosted on Acast. In this weeks interview we speak with Greg from the UK Cannabis Social Clubs. The UKCSC is not an actual cannabis social club, but more of an activist organisation that is designed to help change laws in the UK so one day we can have social clubs. Greg is planning a UK tour this year to bring awareness to his movement, and hopefully will expand to an even bigger tour next year with help from the cannabis community.

Was war da los?
April in ganz Deutschland in Kraft tritt. In this predictably offbeat episode of "Backing Tracks," Tam and Jim delve into the mystifying world of social club singers. From off-key renditions of Sinatra to the enthusiastic but pitch-challenged regulars belting out folk classics, our hosts uncover the hidden 'gems' of this quintessentially Scottish phenomenon. They swap stories about the eccentric characters who are stars in these social hubs and explore the inexplicable popularity of certain '70s hits, and the bizarre yet endearing rituals that make up the backbone of this unique cultural tapestry. Tune in for a good-hearted laugh at the world of the social club and its valiant efforts to keep Scotland singing—often bewilderingly, but always with unmatched passion. Hosted on Acast. In episode 2 of the new series, our host Kate Creedon talks with two sporty special guests, originally from Ireland, who've followed the well-trodden path across to Sydney's Eastern suburbs. There's ex-Irish international rugby player Aoife McDermott, who moved to Sydney in 2019 and has taken up a second sport, Aussie Rules, whilst also doing agency nursing work for Alliance. Aoife tells us how the flexibility of agency nursing allows her to fit her sporting commitments alongside her work and explains how Alliance supported her in making the trip down under! We also meet Joe Kinahan who swapped Ireland for Sydney in 2015 and is now the Chairperson of Clan Na Gael GAA Club in Bondi. He and Kate discuss his time in Australia so far, and Joe explains how sports clubs can be a really great way for people to make friends when they arrive – even if you're not particularly sporty!
In this episode, I speak with Megan Pennings, the author of an incredible new book that features the Bearded Villains, through some beautiful photographs and stories.

Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
This week on the Hop Forward Podcast, we're joined once again by author Pete Brown to discuss his latest book, Clubland: How The Working Men's Club Shaped Britain. We explore some of the questions surrounding classism, the preconceptions many people have about social clubs and working men's clubs, as well as exploring whether craft brewers should be creating offerings that cater to social clubs and their patrons.THIS WEEK'S EPISODE OF THE PODCAST IS SPONSORED BY:Lallemand BrewingLalBrew NovaLager™ is an innovative new hybrid lager yeast from Lallemand brewing. Hey, Listener. It literally took me 11 tries to get an intro recorded and it still isn't great! I am just so humbled by today's guest and honored to have her on the podcast! Robin Boudreau and her husband Ryan started No Foot Too Small to draw attention to pregnancy and infant loss. We're proud to have her here in Iowa but their mission has expanded across the country! Her mission is just so necessary and needed. I just cannot put into words the importance of today's conversation. But I will try. Key takeaways: Robin and Ryan are from small-town Wisconsin. They went to college at the University of Minnesota and moved to Iowa City for Ryan's Post Doc program. I love how Robin asks, “How am I going to build MY small town in THIS community.” How cool to make the most of where life takes you? And build community everywhere? Robin had her first daughter, Bella, in 2011 and got pregnant shortly after with her son Beau. At her 20-week ultrasound, immediately after finding out he was a boy she learned he had many life-threatening abnormalities. Beau was born that January and went immediately to heaven. Robin and Ryan knew they always wanted to honor Beau but weren't sure how. They had a birthday party for him but invited the whole community. They honored 12 angels that day and over 100 guests! After their amazing event, people asked them to continue hosting, so they did! After three years the Boudreaus and their contributors donated $100,000 to March of Dimes. Robin loves March of Dimes but recognized the difference and importance of her mission too. They started No Foot Too Small to specifically recognize pregnancy and infant loss. By 2019 the organization was so busy that Robin left her career to grow NFTS full-time. The mission of No Foot Too Small is to celebrate, unite, and build. They celebrate angels, unite families, and build bereavement birthing suites. Robin wants her support groups to feel like a circle of girlfriends! Their organization hosts meetups in fun and welcoming spaces. Learn more about their Mom's Groups and Men's Social Clubs on their website. The pandemic caused their group to “pivot” and host online meetups. Her stories are heartbreaking but she loved to meet people across the country. When Robin first lost Beau, all she wanted was to cuddle up with a cozy blanket! She searched far and wide for the perfect item to wear to honor Beau. That inspired their line of angel-inspired gifts, Love Beau. 11% of profits go back to No Foot Too Small. Neu! We were on the screen for a conversation with my "fun squad" from Frederick County Parks & Recreation. Joining me: Tony Baker, Marketing Manager and Andrew Keefauver, Superintendent of Recreation. The pair gave me all the details for their running events that will kick off on April 2 with Trails 4 Miles Race for Autism, followed by the Apple Blossom Festival Races, and the Sherando Sprint Tri. Get details and registration information here: runatthetop.net We also talked about summer camps, the Youth Trout Derby happening at Clear Brook Park, and the abundance of job opportunities available throughout the department. Finally, we discussed the senior social clubs and the fun activities they have throughout the year. Find more information about all the FCPRD programs on their website: fcprd.net
Welcome to Bison Talk! Fresh off New Member Orientation Week we decided to have an episode all about social clubs. My name is Logan Butts, and today we'll be talking to a pair of people to get the behind the scenes scoop on social clubs on campus, how to join one if interested, what benefits come from joining a club, and more! First, we spoke with Kelvin Kelley, Director of Community Life at Lipscomb. Then we spoke with Sean Hagan, president of the Sigma Alpha men's social club on campus.
Happy 2022 everyone! We are starting a new series with a drink “down the club” with some of our regulars reminiscing about the hay day of the social clubs in Ashington. Enjoy the trips down memory lane! Don't forget to share the show with friends and family - help us keep our shared local history and stories alive. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/voicesfromthenortheast/message

News: A holiday tradition is returning to the parks next week! The famous Disneyland Resort candy canes will be on sale again at the Candy Palace And Candy Kitchen on Main Street December 7th, 9th, 15th, 21st, and 23rd. Over at Disney California Adventure, they will be on sale December 8th, 14th, 16th, and 22nd at Trolley Treats on Buena Vista Street. A mobile waitlist system will be in place to get one of these confections, and there is a limit of 1 per guest, with no discounts accepted. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/11/foodie-guide-to-holiday-candy-at-disneyland-resort/ The Candlelight Processional will again take place at Disneyland, after not being opened last year. There are two nights, with four total performances on December 4th and 5th at 5:30pm and 7:45pm. If you are not a member of the media, a Club 33 member, or an invited guest, your best bet to see the performance will be for the second performance each night as the limited seating area is cleared in-between performances. – https://www.micechat.com/308957-disneyland-update-candy-canes-candlelight-holiday-surprise/ The hotels of the Disneyland Resort have finished their holiday transformations this year. Some of the things that guests can experience include an under the sea themed Christmas tree at the Paradise Pier Hotel, a vintage-inspired mural at the Disneyland Hotel, and, of course the massive tree, with ornaments inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement of California at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. In addition, the gingerbread house at the Grand Californian is a site to behold, with treats for sale nearby. Santa Claus will be at each of the hotels from November 25th through December 24th, with handbell carolers at the Grand Californian now through January 9th, and holiday carolers strolling between the Disneyland Hotel and the Paradise Pier Hotel December 15th through the 25th. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/11/the-holidays-are-magical-at-the-hotels-of-the-disneyland-resort/ We talked about it's a small world's problems that came from flooding of the attraction just prior to it reopening for the holiday season. No official updates, but MiceChat reports that people are working around the clock to get the attraction open as soon as possible. The Disneyland calendar continues to push the “refurbishment” listed out one day at a time, hoping for a miracle. Our sources indicate that a miracle is what it will take to get it opened before the end of the holiday season. – https://www.micechat.com/308957-disneyland-update-candy-canes-candlelight-holiday-surprise/ Avengers Campus has been terrific in how often different Avengers and other Marvel characters cycle into and out of the new land. This time, Hawkeye and Kate Bishop from the new Disney+ series Hawkeye will be battling the Tracksuit Mafia, then taking part in meet and greets with guests. The battle will take place on select days on the rooftop of Avengers Headquarters. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/11/24/catch-hawkeye-defending-avengers-campus-in-disney-california-adventure/ Splash Mountain is going down for refurbishment starting on January 10th. Some online think that this will begin the changeover to The Princess and the Frog theme that is coming sometime in the future. Since there has not been any word from Disney on this, we are going to assume that this is the annual maintenance for the attraction, just like Grizzly River Run each winter at the resort. If anything changes, or gets announced, we will let you know! – https://www.micechat.com/262305-breaking-news-splash-mountain-to-become-princess-and-the-frog-themed/ and https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/11/30/news-2-popular-rides-will-temporarily-close-soon-in-disneyland/ For guests wanting to upgrade to a Magic Key, the options are getting less and less. Last week, we reported on the Dream Key being sold out, and now the Believe Key has also sold out. The only keys left are the Enchant Key, and the SoCal only Imagine Key. This follows Annual Pass sales being suspended in Walt Disney World to help control the level of crowds in the parks. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/11/24/news-another-disneyland-resort-magic-key-pass-has-sold-out/ Amazon and Disney have partnered together to offer Alexa services to hotel guests in Disney World and next year at Disneyland. Current Amazon smart device owners can ask their devices to “launch Avengers Campus recruitment” to be taken on an interactive audio tour of Avengers Campus. It is a fun addition to the smart device and can be used to get your family excited for the next trip! – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/11/28/take-a-tour-of-disneys-avengers-campus-from-home-with-amazon-alexa/ The union negotiations and another vote is on the horizon for the cast members at Disneyland. Since cast members at DCA have already voted to approve the contract, only Disneyland Park cast members are holding another vote to decide of they will strike or not. They need a 75% vote to strike, and only 60% voted down the contract, so there is still a ways to go. The vote takes place on December 3rd to decide to accept the contract, or to strike. MiceChat recommends travel insurance if you are going to Disneyland in December or January, as a strike would likely shutdown the resort. – https://www.micechat.com/308957-disneyland-update-candy-canes-candlelight-holiday-surprise/ Discussion Topic: Stephanie F – Social Clubs at Disneyland SoCal Funseekers – Disney Movie Meets and other events https://www.facebook.com/groups/899875317467577 Disneyana Fan Club https://disneyanafanclub.weebly.com/ Disneyland Alumni Club https://www.disneylandalumni.org/ MiceChat.com https://www.micechat.com/

On Friday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Kay Murphy, Shannon-based Secretary of Active Retirement Ireland and Ciaran McKinney, Engage Programme manager with Age and Opportunity For many elderly people in Clare and further afield, social clubs and active retirement groups are a very important part of life. From dancing to bridge, there is a group or club to facilitate every interest, and for many of these people, it is their only form of social interaction on a weekly basis. Minister for Older People, Mary Butler, is calling for restrictions which affect these social outlets to be lifted in September.

Have you ever heard a saying, “It is not about what you know, but who you know?” This statement may be said over million times in million different ways, but it is undeniable that it has become more relevant in the business world today. We can connect much further and more effectively through technologies and social platforms in this day and age. A job seeker can easily expand the network and catch recruiters’ eyes through a presentable LinkedIn profile. An aspiring individual will be able to find the right mentors through Facebook Groups. If you search for ways to connect to a particular group that dedicates to a cause, a simple search online can put you right through. However, as convenient as it seems, it is hard to overlook the fact that certain social clubs remained hidden from the public’s eyes and major social networks that are both cherished and endorsed by some of the finest elites in the business world. Archipelago Clubs of Denver, Colorado is a low cost ($125 a month) social club! Born out of unused spaces and great ideas, Archipelago holds event every weekend for their members to join and bring a guest to! I have been to one of their events in their Attic location - it was bright, fun, had so much space, character, and I met great people. That's what this social club is all about - helping people meet people in unique environments that lead to lasting connections: People, Places, and ProgramsArchipelago Clubs have two locations here in Denver, The Attic (which has view of the Platte River, Elitch Gardens, and downtown Denver) and The Garage (which has a sauna and great outdoor patio space). They also have locations in Phoenix, Arizona called The Palm and The Speakeasy. If anyone has been to an archipelago please reach out to me on IG @moving.with.madison I would love to hear about your experiences :)

Many of the Irish immigrants who came to Cleveland in the 1910s and 1920s were young single men who were escaping conflict. They or their families wanted them to avoid conscription into the British Army during World War I or to avoid what seemed certain to be another failed rebellion in 1916. Others left in the later 1910s as rebellion spread in Ireland, and the British Black and Tans terrorized the countryside. Others had been enemy combatants during the Irish Civil War in 1922 and 1923. This cohort of immigrants swelled the ranks of organizations that promoted Irish freedom, including the secretive Clan na Gael. They also brought Gaelic football to Cleveland in the 1920s, and they helped to found the city's most enduring Irish social club, the West Side Irish American Club. A new wave of immigration was already producing a new wave of Irish community leaders. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

He explains the different kinds of clubs. And Greg believes that cannabis social clubs can be an important part of community life as for many patients like himself who are prescribed pharmaceutical drugs it can make them withdrawn and cut off. Sometimes a club can be a good solution for social & therapeutic reasons. To help people start clubs the UKCSC have a structure and legal team who will support members who follow the club's rules and guidance. The lighting unit emits 5 spectrums of light temperature E.g. warm, red, cold white, 2 blue colours. The system is both modular and app/ cloud based so users can upload settings that have worked well for different plants. It is constructed around 1 metre strips connected at 45 degrees using mounted rails so the user can connect them to create cubes. Adam shares how it is possible to create sun rise to sunset in a fading time of your choice. So it replicates realistic sun rise and sunset and can this based on times of year. 1 cubic metre generates 336 watts of 3 dimensional light. A university is currently doing a thesis on the modular lighting unit and will calculate energy costs for the unit. When asked about what he thought about this years Product Earth festival. We have a real breath of fresh air for listeners this week: our host, Nina Rupp, is joined by Cheryl Johnson, a Freelance Marketing and Social Media Strategist, who curated Wednesday's Daily on social spaces for professionals and creatives of color. They fully recap this topic, which benefits beautifully from Cheryl's lens and experience in this space. Nina also recaps brands entering the esports market, new astrology-based initiatives that reach for the stars, and a new type of entertainment trend called "satisfying videos," which lives under the idea of contentless content. This week Tim and Katy talk to Andy and Shay who run an initiative called Mental Health Friendly whose aim is to help people with mental health conditions to learn English. If you're interested in contributing to the crowdfunding campaign for Mental Health Friendly or want to volunteer to teach the groups mentioned in the podcast, you'll find all the necessary information below: https://gogetfunding.com/shay-educational-consultant/ - Fundraising campaign Volunteers Wanted: For the past five years under the umbrella of Mental Health Friendly, and in close collaboration La Federaciò de Salut Mental Catalunya, a handful of teachers here in Barcelona (and now Sabadell!!) have been trying to improve access to quality English Language Training for people suffering/recovering from serious mental health problems. We have also been trying to raise awareness within the classroom of the importance of mental health issues in an attempt to reduce stigma, promote greater social inclusion and prioritise practices to protect and help the mental health of the population in general. Opportunities and support exist for teachers wanting to help with this initiative, in particular we are looking for teachers who are able to spare one hour or more per week giving pre-prepared English classes (El Maletín Pedagógico) in Social Clubs run by la Federació de Salut Mental. These clubs are dotted around Barcelona and throughout Catalonia. Welcome to Episode 137 of the Sheep Dressed Like Wolves Podcast. In this episode I look back at my time at university and explore some of the challenges that introverts and highly sensitive people might experience in higher education. I wanted to talk through some of the challenges that introverts in particular might face when going off to college or university. Maybe you are going soon, in which case this should give you some permissions and things to think about before you get there. Or maybe someone you know is going soon. In that case, this might help you prepare THEM. My aim is to help you see that the experience is not the same for everyone, that the concept of 'being a student' isn't one that we all embrace equally, but that you also have tools at your disposal to make the absolute best of it. This time of year fills me with weird emotional memories of 10 years ago when I was preparing to pack up my life into a couple of bags and go off to university. I didn't know anything about what it meant to be an introvert or highly sensitive person when I went and so in this episode I think back at the amazing time I had with this lens in place. I want to encourage you (or those introverts you know who are embarking on this journey) to think about a few things in preparation before they go. I explore issues in these particular areas: 1. Living Out for the First Time 2. Being Responsible for Yourself 3. Participation 4. The Work is Never Over 5. Social Clubs and Expectations 6. The Torment of a Library Filled with People 7. Impostor Syndrome 8. Student Culture 9. People...Everywhere! Over to You Do you have anything else to add to this list of challenges that introverts and highly sensitive people might face at university? I'd love to hear your experiences or questions so please leave them in the comments below.
