In this episode of Message in the Middle, I sit down with Marcia Heath, professional editor, writer, and founder of Bungalow Hill. Marcia's career was the kind most people would envy—publicist at Simon & Schuster, executive editor at Harcourt, brand strategist for startups and Fortune 500s. But by her early sixties, she found herself burnt out and questioning what came next. Then came Aruba and a small, soulful surf shop that changed everything.Marcia's debut book, The Little Giant: The Story of Aruba's Surf Shop and the Rebels Who Built It, is more than a story about a store—it's a celebration of risk-taking, reinvention, and the surprising places inspiration can live.

There has been an increase in the distance between homes and places of employment, resulting in longer commutes for people, due to the attraction of living in small rural villages. This finding comes from a new research study involving the participation of 1,000 people from seven small towns across Ireland – including Ennistymon and Lahinch in Co. Clare – as well as two towns in Maryland in the United States. The study was carried out using a combination of an online survey of residents and a series of interviews with commuters, community leaders and other local stakeholders. To find out more Alan Morrissey was joined by Dr. Brendan O'Keeffe, who led on the Ennistymon-Lahinch case study, Ben Bennet from Surf School & Surf Shop in Lahinch, and Sean Lenihan, Director of Service for Economic Development at Clare County Council. Send us a Text Message.Jeff McNaught owns Edgewater Surf, a surf shop in Rocky River, where he sells a variety of new and used paddleboards, surfboards, and windsurfing gear. The shop also serves as an informal community hub for styrofoam™ recycling. Jeff started this program to provide a local recycling option for the bulky EPS (expanded polystyrene) found inside paddleboards and encasing appliances, TVs, computers, and other large items for customer shipment. This bulky, lightweight, and rigid foam plastic is not accepted in community recycling programs, and the closest recycler is in Dayton, Ohio. Working to fill a community need, Jeff established an EPS drop-off location at his shop and installed a "densifier" with a Food Service Packaging Association grant. This equipment compacts the foam so it can be cost-effectively transported. With both collection and processing up and running, Jeff is now the only processor of post-consumer foam in the Cleveland area while he is still running his shop and getting out on the lake to windsurf. Join us to hear Jeff speak about his vision for scaling this program and what he needs to make it sustainable. Jeff also speaks about what surfing is like in Cleveland and the surfing community and his partnerships with organizations like the Surfrider Foundation working to address problems of plastic pollution. Jeff has turned his passions into his business and is all in. We hope our community will support him.  ResourcesRecycling at Edgewater SurfShop Edgewater SurfAbout Edgewater SurfFollow us: https://www.facebook.com/ecospeaksclehttps://www.instagram.com/ecospeakscleContact us:hello@ecospeakscle.com

This week on Highly Educated Podcast we bring in apparel creator, surf shop owner, and brand curator Adam Mar. A local to Long Island, New York - Adam has been coming out to Montauk ever since he was a little kid. For those who don't know Montauk, it's one of the most visited summer destinations in the world from June to September. However, living out in Montauk year-round for nearly the last decade and owning a surf shop is no easy feat - especially with the lack of affordable commercial property and hyper-inflated costs of rental housing to retain employees. Adam continues to support and connect with the community and that's how he makes it work. Between the free quarterly surf board swaps, always offering cheap surf wax, and participation in dozens of local events and causes throughout the year - he really is grabbing on to the local surf community. His shop also offers a very unique collection of boards that other shops don't carry so it's always worth the stop-in to check out their current inventory! The truth is we need more guys like Adam, who continue to operate and inspire out of small town environments that lose headway every day to large scale developers and big box brands. He is an example of the "Mom & Pop" stores we've been so desperate to keep in the downtown Montauk area, in The Hamptons, and beyond. Dave Cropper is a born and bred New Hampshire beach bum. As owner of Cinnamon Rainbows Surf Co., in North Hampton, NH—which he has owned since he was 19, Cropper is a local expert on NH surf history and culture. In this episode of the 603podcast, Cropper shares with Dan Egan how the sport of surfing has exploded with the availability and affordability of wetsuits, boards, and the accessibility of surf forecasting and live wave cams.Folks come from far and wide to experience NH's mild winters, consistent surf, and relatively warmer days. When there is a good swell, folks gather from across the Northeast, sometimes all the way from Montreal. The surf culture in New Hampton is also multigenerational. You can often find folks of all ages out on the water. North Hampton has a year-round surf community, and Cropper attests that there is “nothing like the good days at home.” Much like skiers in New England, surfers in New Hampshire appreciate a special day on the water because perfect conditions are infrequent but amazing when they come.In this episode, Cropper shares the trialing story of his building catching on fire, the closing of his shop, immense community support in saving the store, and what the future holds for the surf shop. “The only certain thing is uncertainty,” says Cropper. After the first summer of COVID, surfing boomed in the granite state, as well as local interest in paddleboarding. Since then, there has been a strong enthusiasm from surf veterans and new surfers alike on the New Hampton shore and in the Cinnamon Rainbows store.“A wave comes from thousands of miles away, and you're meeting it as it washes on the beach,” says Cropper.Cropper shares with Dan some of his favorite parts of his surf community and also some tips for those just getting started in the sport. Why should people surf in North Hampton?North Hampton beaches boast sandy bottoms, point breaks, accessible parking along highway 1A, and an incredible community at the beach. One thing Cropper loves about the North Hampton surf scene, is that people are always willing to help. People will offer tips, mentorship, and education, and recognize their responsibility to pass on the knowledge of those who showed them the ways of the waves. What are some tips for learning how to surf?1. Take a lesson- learning to surf with an experienced surfer will help you identify hazards, make smarter decisions, and learn the fundamentals of what to do and where to be.2. Pick the right day- ask your local shop and do your research. Will the waves be appropriate to learn? Will the weather be comfortable?3. Choose the right board size- Ask a shop owner for help. You want a board big enough to catch a ride and small enough to maneuver with your skills.Check out Ralph's Pic of the Week for updates, blogs, photos, wave cam footage and more on the North Hampton surf culture. For more information on New Hampshire surf culture and Cinnamon Rainbows Surf CMad River Coffee is located at Exit 28 off Highway 93 in Campton, NH. But it took him a few years and a couple of classes to trust his instinctive strong choices and learn how to "audition". BAYWATCH discovered him in his native home of Hawaii among a 1300 person cattle call. Jason responded to a radio call announcing the audition that would pay him more than the daily rate of folding T-shirts at the family owned surf shop. In 2004, while on a surf trip to Costa Rica, Robert was introduced to the concept of “Pura Vida.”  Directly translated as “pure life” or “simple life,” Pura Vida is better understood as way of life. A way of life that left such an impression on Robert that in 2005,  he and his business partner, long time NW surfer Al Krieger, opened Pura Vida Surf Shop in the small town of Philomath Oregon.  In 2016, Pura Vida Surf Shop moved costal and is now located in Otter Rock Oregon, just across the street from the stairs leading down one of Oregon's most popular central coast breaks.  Join me on episode 26, as I have the good fortune to sit down with Robert and hear the story behind the shop that exists to bring the spirit of Pura Vida to Oregon Surfing.  Thanks for your time Robert, the welcoming vibe that you and your staff create in Otter Rock is what it's all about. [EP 78] In this episode of Unexpected English, we visit a surf shop in San Diego. Why not take five minutes to listen just for fun, and practice your listening skills at the same time? There is a TRANSCRIPTION below to help you! [INTRO ... then music, then let's go!] So was driving down the street and I saw sign that said surf... surf shop, and I thought: Surf! This is California, surf! Surfboards! Let's go in and see what's going on. So here we are, uh, what's going on? We're taking boards and fixing them up and get them back out to people. So you're saying this is a surfboard repair shop. Yes, so when a board gets dinged or broken we fix it so it can go back in the water. How do surfboards get broken? Rocks, waves, people, surfboards -- all kinds of things. OK, so there's like accidents out there in the ocean that can happen. Exactly, accidents do happen all the time. OK, accidents happen. And if uhh.. OK I brought in my board ... I guess it depends on the kind of damage... what kind of what kind of things can happen? Fin boxes can break... Fin boxes? Is that the fin that sticks up? Yes, glass can crack, fins can get stuck in boards.. pretty much anything you can imagine. Fins can get stuck in boards? That sounds like ... dangerous! Yeah, so-so, as long as it's not you. [laughter] OK, so just out of curiosity, what does... I know you don't sell new... you sell used surfboards here? Yes, boards that Joe repairs or people left behind. All right, so I'm like, you know, thinking of taking it up. I just need like an entry-level surfboard, what's it gonna sent me back? Anywhere from 100 to 300 bucks, depending. OK a couple hundred dollars and I've got myself a surfboard to start learning to surf. Yeah, pretty much. What are the high end, I mean, not super high-end, what is like a higher end board go for? Anywhere from $800 to $5000. Five thousand? Yeah, I've got one of those... OK let me think... what else was I missing here... what else... Uhh, certain surf essentials. Essentials, what are the essentials? Fins, leashes, wax... OK, hold on. You wax your board before you get in the water? Yes. And that's so it's... So ypu don't slip off. Oh, you wax it for you, not for the water side? No, not the water side, the deck side. OH, you wax it to make it sticky so you're like ... on the board! Exactly. All right. Well, what other tricks should I know to like, stay on the board. Take it one step at a time. Get the basics first. Alright that sounds like good advice, that sounds like good advice. So there you go, people, people you've had your advice here on how to get started, you know what it's gonna cost, and I'm just saying anytime you're here in beautiful San Diego... oh, where are the good spots here in San Diego? Anywhere! Up and down the beach. Up and down the beach! You can be surfing up and down the beach, anywhere in beautiful San Diego! That's it, thanks a lot, thanks for your time. [Surfing outro] P.S. Bill “Blinky” Hubina, owner of Ventura Surf Shop, joins Dr. Bunny to discuss surfing and how his business is doing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Surfing has become even more popular during the pandemic because it's a sport that's done out in the fresh air, and Blinky tells us how he and his wife have navigated the waters during this unprecedented time. Bill also tells us about the fascinating history of Ventura Surf Shop. They are a true local surf shop, selling custom new and used surf boards, accessories, and wetsuits. They've been around for so long, they've had the same phone number since 1967! Tune in for a great interview and be sure to stop in to Ventura Surf Shop to support local businesses! About Ventura Surf Shop: Ventura Surf shop was started in the early sixties by Tom Hale. Tom had been building boards with V.I.P., Ventura International Plastics in the late fifties. VIP was owned by Bill Fisher with the shop located on Olive Street.  The shop sold fiberglass, cloth, resin & laminated surfboards. VIP went on to a new factory on Callens Rd. where they produced boards “Pop Outs” (production boards) Ten Toes, Shark, Tiki and the Duke Kahanamoky boards. Boards were sold to mass merchandisers like Sears and Federated. Tom left VIP to open a small shop in 1962, located at 235 W. Santa Clara St. where he made custom Tom Hale surfboards. In 1963 Tom Morey moved to Ventura recruiting Tom Hale to be his shaper and moved into the small shop on Santa Clara St. with Hale. Morey made Australian surfboards and Tom Morey skeg works (aka TRAF Fins). According to Tom Hale the polypropylene fins while being shaped with a grinder smelled like a fart, (TRAF spelled backwards)! Morey's wife Jolly was a talented artist and helped Tom Hale design the first Ventura Surf Shop logo for Hale's custom boards. In 1964 Morey decided to change the name of his Australian surfboards to Morey, then in 1965 Morey and Karl Pope became partners and opened Morey Pope on Front St. in Ventura. Tom Hale went on to produce his own custom boards nd opened a sales shop on Main Street across from Ventura High School. He eventually closed the Main Street shop and sold boards out of his glassing shop on Callens Rd. Tom made boards in Ventura until 1973 when he moved to San Diego. In the meantime, Bill “Blinky” Hubina who also worked for Morey on Santa Clara St. became Morey Popes first employee on Front St. In 1967 Blinky and Dennis Ryder left Morey Pope to start William Dennis Surfboards in an industrial building on Callens Rd. Dennis departed the business shortly after it got started. Blinky continued to make William Dennis surfboards. The business grew and eventually Blinky opened a small show room on Thompson Blvd. in the front of the house where he lived. In 1972 Karl Pope who had bought Morey out decided to close Morey-Pope retail shop and start Wave. Wave was a corporation which included surf, wave, and Morey-Pope. Karl Pope moved the new company to Saticoy and in 1973 opened Wave, making honeycomb surfboards. Blinky took over the Morey-Pope building on Front St. and expanded the William Dennis surfboard business in to it. Where they manufactured William Dennis boards and had a show room. In 1973 when Tom Hale left Ventura the employees started answering the phone “William Dennis” Ventura Surf Shop and assumed the name. The Ventura Surf Shop was sold to Stan Fujii in 1980. Stan changed the sign on the shop on Front St. from William Dennis to The Ventura Surf Shop in 1986. Stan started making Fujii surfboards, then in 1995 Stan moved the shop to its current location at 88 E. Thompson Blvd.  Stan ran the business for 20 years until he sold it to Mark Ellison in 2000 along with his managing partner Bill Blinky Hubina. Blinky and his wife, Mignonne purchased the shop in 2012 from Mark and continue to run it today along with his son Robert Hubina. The Ventura Surf Shop has a long history in the surfing community, it is a true surf shop, selling custom new and used surf boards, accessories and wetsuits.  There are over 300 new boards and 200 used boards for sale. This hard core surf shop offers customs boards by William Dennis, Campbell Bros., Wayne Rich, Roberts, Dennis Ryder, Klaus Jones and Spence. Troy Elmore is a multifaceted craftsman and surfer. He's one of the few shapers out there that can surf all styles of surfboards in the broad spectrum that exists. He can truly ride everything with a skill level that's unmatched in terms of style, grace, and flow. From fishes, thrusters, and bonzers to eggs, vee bottoms, and logs, Elmore is able to consistently surf his vast array of boards allowing him to create this incredibly valuable feedback loop to iterate his designs until they're absolutely perfect. Craftsmanship is the underlying theme for Elmore's hobbies. When he's not surfing or mowing foam you can find him skating or biking. The motorcycles that Elmore builds are nothing short of show stopping. Not only are they beautiful and clean looking but they allow for consistent creative evolutionary path for functional design. In episode two of our Case Study series, we take a deeper dive into the mysterious world of displacement hulls by learning more about hull lord, Greg Liddle and what is now Liddle Designs. Greg Liddle is a very private person and recently retired from shaping. Luckily his friend and business partner, Kirk Putnam is keeping Liddle surfboards moving by recreating replicas of Greg Liddle's boards with Scott Anderson of Anderson Surfboards and Aquatech Glassing based out of Hermosa Beach, California. Greg's hull designs have been slowly refined over the course of 50 years and most people in the surfing community would agree that he shapes some of the best displacement hulls around. There isn't necessarily a strict definition of what a displacement hull is but they generally have a deeply rolled, convex bottom contour, wide point forward, pulled in tail, very knifey rails, and a s-deck. Displacement Hulls are just one style that exists in the vast universe of surfboard designs; that being said, it is cool to see a design make it through 50 years as there are not many designs that hold the surfing community's interest for that length of time while holding true to it's design characteristics. Granted displacement hulls surfers make up a small yet die hard sub set of surf culture. The generally promote fast, down the line surfing with ease, style, and grace. We look forward to seeing this design continuing to spread beautiful surfing throughout surfing's future.

Cowboy Surf Shop has been a leading force in Northern California since the early 70’s. Founded by Craig”Cowboy”Mac Arthur as Miramar Surf Boards in 1971 in it’s original location, the shop was mainly a showroom for the surfboards that Craig shaped and glassed, as well as serving as Half Moon Bay’s first surf shop. Many years have been spent learning and perfecting the trade of surfboard production, as well as other ventures including the opening of the retail store Cowboy Surf Shop in 1982. Craig also teamed with friend Chip Rowland, and Bob Hurley in 1984 to work as Northern California Sales Rep for the then start up surf line Billabong. His duties consisted of building the Northwestern territory for Billabong, and managing the Northern California Billabong Surf Team. Craig recruited local talent from his territory which consisted of surfers like Daryl “Flea” Virotsgo, brother Troy, Nate & Zach Acker, Richard & Dave Schmidt, Vince Collier, Adam Repogle, and many more. Other duties stemmed from teaming up with Billabong’s pro surfers like “Sunny Garcia”  and “Doogle Walker”when surfing in local contests like the O’Neill Coldwater Classic, or going on photo shoots to distant locations for surfing magazines with other pro surfers. Craig’s sales reputation soon earned him jobs with other prominent companies like Rusty Presendorfer who was just getting his clothing line going, and soon hired Craig as his Northern California Sales Rep. Utilizing Craigs relationship with stores & shops, Rusty was a shoe-in with his line of  T ‘Shirts and Stickers, and was soon on his way to liable recognition in Northern California . Craig was also hired as Sales Rep for Billabongs sister like company Peak Wetsuits, headed out by John “The Butcher” Howitt, the Aussie wetsuit entrepreneur who later went on to start Quiksilver Wetsuits. It was about four and a half years into his sale repping career when Craig was recruited by the local Surf / Rock Band Bug. Led by Singer Web Fingers, and Bassist Bubba Luv, Craig was the newest member playing Lead Guitar. (Stage Name “Dude Broman”). See Bug click on image below After several years of hard work, recording, rehearsing, playing gigs, and Frat Parties, Bug had worked it’s way up the local circuit to the point of being a major player on the Bay Area music scene. Bug had found a home at the Cactus Club in San Jose where their hard core followers packed the venue night after night, headlining, and also playing support for acts like Primus. Mary’s Danish, The Vandals, Urban Dance Squad, and Mojo Nixon, (just to name a few). Bug also won the the” Bay Area Battle of the Bands” contest, and played to thousands of people at the Oakland Collesieum, as well as plying every major venue in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bug was well on their way to stardom, local rock magazines were revue them almost weekly, and one went as far as saying that “Bug was going to be the next bay area rock band after Primus to go over the top”. The press did not go unnoticed, and local recording studio mogul Joel Jaffe from  Studio D in Sausalito had picked up on the buzz, and invited the band to come down to the lavish studio to record a 3 song demo that he would shop to some of his record label connections. Things were going great with repping, and playing in the band. Craig started to date one of the Bug dancers, Lucy Turner, who soon became a cult fav as Hippi Bitch, a character in one of the bands popular songs.
