Sports Dad Hub Podcast Episode 21 with Texas high school football coaching legend, Randy Jackson. Coach Jackson is a 30-year coaching veteran. He's won multiple coaching awards, including the Texas 4A Coach of the Year Award in 2010 when he and his staff orchestrated one of the biggest turnarounds in Texas high school football history. He was hired as the football coach at Mesquite Poteet following a 1-19 season. Coach Jackson and his staff took that team to 12-3 the following season. Key To The TurnaroundAfter such a tremendous turnaround, many people asked coach what the key was. Did he install a new and innovative offensive system? Did he create groundbreaking new defensive schemes? Did he recruit a completely different roster of stud players? Nope. It wasn't any of those things. The key was one word... CULTURE. Culture Defeats StrategyCoach Jackson came in and completely rebuilt the culture of their football program. He helped players feel "10 foot tall and bulletproof." He helped them believe in themselves and in each other. He helped them visualize their success before it happened. Insights You Can Apply To Your Life & FamilyThis episode is great for coaches of any sport and sports parents of all sports. How sports parents create a positive culture within their household. How to create a set of core values as a family unit. The world of youth sports has become obsessed with early achievement & specialization. We want our kids to become incredible athletes who excel in sports. We constantly compare them to their teammates and kids they play against. If we feel like they're not as good, we put more pressure on them, start coaching from the sidelines and in the car ride home. We get them private coaches and lessons on the side. We start to wonder if they'd be better off specializing and going "all in" on their best sport. Our guest is author Richard Karlgaard. He’s a journalist, award-winning entrepreneur, and speaker. He's the author of the bestselling book, Late Bloomers: The Power of Patience in a World Obsessed with Early Achievement. Rich and Kevin talk about how kids today are under more pressure than any other generation to perform at young ages. If they don't meet society's, and parents', expectations, kids can feel like failures. We talk about how social media fuels the pressure fire and comparison game, and how parents use their kids' achievements as status symbols. Rich shares how and why it's so important for parents to give their kids time and space to develop and grow in their sports. Help kids find their way in sports by exposing them to a variety of sports and letting them play multiple sports for as long as they want to. In episode 7, I talk about how sports parents can help their kids get better at sports, WITHOUT criticizing them. A lot of kids love sports, but they hate the car ride home from games and practices. As they buckle themselves into the back seat, they mentally prepare to hear all about what they did wrong during their game and what they need to work on. I really believe that most sports parents who have these conversations with their kids have their kid’s best interest at heart. They think they’re helping. But what usually ends up happening is their kid blocks out what they’re saying and they wide up damaging their relationship in the process. If you want to help kids improve in sports, there’s a much better way to do it, without criticism. This episode will teach you how. www.SportsDadHub.com/7

Many sports parents have expectations that are too high, too unrealistic and too unfair for their youth athlete. From the moment your kids put on a sports team uniform you should only have five expectations of them as youth athletes. If you can master this aspect of sports parenting, you and your kids will enjoy the youth sports experience much more, and you'll be well on your way to building a stronger bond with your kids.
