To say that this is a difficult time in our nation’s history might be something of an understatement. For many people, the 2020 election didn’t go as they hoped it would. And now, there is also a tremendous amount of anger and grief over the riot that took place at the Capitol last week. Even though there are calls for unity, we are seeing little done to actually move toward unity as a country. How do we press forward and maintain a strong personal faith through the challenges that lay before us? Charmaine Yoest, the vice president of the Institute for Family, Community, and Opportunity at The Heritage Foundation, joins the “Problematic Women” podcast to discuss how we can choose to live out our faith and seek unity in America right now. We also welcome our colleague Michelle Cordero, digital content manager for The Heritage Foundation and host of the “Heritage Explains” podcast, to the show to break down the new season of “The Bachelor.”And as always, we’ll be crowning our "Problematic Woman of the Week."Enjoy the show! Your kiddo comes home from practice complaining about a sore, maybe sprained, ankle. It's kinda swollen, but nothing major. What do you do next? You just need a quick answer. Don't google it. You have another choice...help from an athletic trainer. Listen in to learn more from my conversation with certified athlete Michelle Cordero. Michelle and I talk about... What is your main goal for Athlete Remedy? Why is it so important to have a resource like Athlete Remedy? What gaps are you filling for parents and their athletes? What advice/tips would you give our sports moms/parents as they help their athletes navigate their own sports journey from your perspective? ABOUT MICHELLE I know that a lot of the information out there can be daunting and even intimidating (especially when you’re simply trying to get a quick answer about something as simple as ‘how long should I apply ice when I sprain my ankle?’) and so it is my goal to provide you with information that you can not only UNDERSTAND, but also DO so you can maintain and care for your body efficiently so that you can perform at your best. If you have the tools and information to better understand and care for your body, you will be empowered and confident knowing that you have one less thing holding you back. So here’s a little bit about me…I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and pursued both a Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training at the University of Connecticut and then a Master’s of Science in Sports Medicine at Florida International University. I was fortunate to have been mentored by the leading expert in heat illness in the United States as well as learn from top educators in the field. I attribute my success to being able to put into practice what I learned in the classroom early on as well as getting exposed to so many different sports and injuries that complimented my professional experience. In addition to my primary certification, I also pursued and acquired the Corrective Exercise Specialist certification by the National Academy of Sports Medicine to compliment my expertise and add value to how I approached injury care and rehabilitation with my athletes. Being an athlete since a very young age (I started doing ballet and playing basketball at 4 years old), I also faced many of the aches and pains associated with being an active kid. Working with kids of all ages and competition levels has also given me further insight into what works and doesn’t work from a practical standpoint when treating injuries. I have a passion for sports and love nothing more than to help athletes overcome their struggles and get back to competition. YOUR success…is MY success! CONTINUE THE HUDDLE WE LOVE HEARING FROM YOU! The day I started this podcast, I knew I’d eventually interview my best friend, Michelle Cordero. She is kind, courageous and resilient, having overcome a childhood filled with domestic violence, depression and a broken home — I’ve always wondered how she managed not to dwell on the things that could have held her back. Today she shares what she’s learned from her past, from the recent death of a close friend of cancer and how parenting her high-energy and uniquely sweet little boy, who is 5, taught her how to trust her gut even when teachers and experts told her something different. Spoiler alert: Her gut was right. Michelle says this of her challenging few years raising a rambunctious boy: “Trust your gut. You know your kid…you are your child’s only advocate and you have to stand up for them. Don’t let one teacher tell you what’s best. You know what’s best as their parent.” Michelle is also mom to a 3-year-old girl and works full-time at the Heritage Foundation, commuting 1.5 hours both ways each day to Washington, DC from her home in the suburbs of Virginia. Despite her busy life, she manages to make time for bettering her marriage, taking care of herself through exercise at Orange Theory (we hear that a lot on this podcast!) and doing all kinds of really memorable things with her kids each weekend. You’ll love her “list idea” for keeping yourself happy and on track — and she talks about how it’s helped her in her frequent struggles with depression. We also talk about about false stereotypes of conservative women and why would would both give our right leg to have a long, drawn out sit down dinner with one of our favorite writers, Elizabeth Gilbert. Michelle Cordero shares with us “How she uses a holistic approach when taking care of her athletes.“ Athletic Trainers are part of the Sports Medicine team and are usually the first to the athlete when injured. Also are behind the scenes to prevent injuries from happening. Share what puts the female athlete at risk for injuries- training, nutrition, maintenance. The goal is to break down the injury to relatable terms so they can understand what is going on to their body. Avoid generalizations and bring back information put into context. S5E10: Tortured by Police, Failed by the Justice System, & Locked up in Hell on a Putrid Prison Ship: Angel Cordero’s Fight for Freedom Angel Cordero was convicted in 1999 of attempted murder and robbery of then-Boston University freshman Jason Mercado, who was attacked and stabbed by strangers while walking in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. Four plainclothes Bronx Gang Unit cops driving by the scene observed the tail end of the assault and quickly arrested five men out of the crowd, including Angel Cordero, who at age 26 had no prior criminal record, and his brother, Ramon Rivas. Three of the five young men pleaded guilty in exchange for lesser sentences, but Angel Cordero and Ramon Rivas refused to plead guilty and went to trial. At trial, multiple people testified that a man named Dario Rodriguez had committed the stabbing. In addition, the three confessed assailants also told police that Angel and his brother were not involved. Both brothers were found guilty of second-degree attempted murder, robbery in the first degree, and assault in the first degree, and they were both sentenced to 15 years in prison. Ramon Rivas won his appeal due to judicially inappropriate actions made by the court and was released 6 years into his sentence. Angel Cordero served 13 years in prison despite numerous statements from witnesses that he was not involved, as well as the 2007 confession of longtime drug dealer Dario Rodriguez, who admitted he actually committed the crime. Angel Cordero was released on parole in 2012, and he is still fighting for exoneration with his attorneys at the Innocence Project. In this episode, he is joined by his biggest supporter, his wife Michelle Cordero, who married him while he was still in prison. wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good™ Podcasts in association with Signal Co.
