Brian Keane renowned expert in mindset and weight loss returns as a guest on the podcast to talk with Angela about the difference between discipline and motivation and how your ‘why' and self-identity are the factors that really make the difference in fat loss He discusses why his philosophy is all about finding a nutritional plan that works for you as an individual and how your mindset around nutrition is more important than the actual diet plan you are on. Random training and random eating mean random results but consistency combined with understanding your ‘why' and knowing who you are can bring you lasting results   KEY TAKEAWAYS Discipline is consistently doing the things that support you with your goals Every diet out there can work for you if you have the right mindset If you can find a nutrition plan that has foods you enjoy is in alignment with your goals and you can do it alongside exercise you enjoy it's a massive stepping stone towards success How you feel shouldn't determine what you do. It's not about what you do when you feel motivated it's about what you do consistently over time A restrictive mindset doesn't help, you need to rewire your mind and change the way you look at foods The goal should be a nutritional plan that works for you, focusing on getting good sleep and doing some form of resistance training The important hormones for fat loss are ghrelin ‘the hunger hormone', the hormone leptin and cortisol If your stress levels are too high and you are in an inflammatory state and you will not be able to utilise fat for fuel or build muscle Resistance training is a key factor in achieving fat loss and making progress towards your goals Connect with what you want, if body composition is the goal you need to understand the discipline of doing the work to get there Connect with the result and the identity of who you are. Why you do things is what's important, it's a means to an end You have to prime your identity for what you want and know there is always a price How much do you want to achieve the goal and what price you are prepared to pay to get it? Consistently doing the right thing and doing more when you are feeling motivated will get you to your goal   BEST MOMENTS ‘When you ‘lean out' and burn fat you are going to look tight and lean and sexy and have those lovely curves' ‘You find a way to do what you need to do consistently' ‘Ask yourself what you want to achieve and then look at what you need to do to get there'   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization High Performance website   The Keane Edge: Mastering The Mindset For Real, Lasting Fat Loss - Brian Keane Brian Keane Fitness   ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster Angela is a Nutritionist, Health and Performance Coach. If I've got any aspiring pro basketball players listening, then this episode is definitely for you because Mike and I discuss the process of being drafted into the NBA. Coach Mike G exudes qualities that all great personal trainers should have: compassion, kindness, and overall caring nature. During our talk, he talks to me about client-trainer relationships and how things such as trust and compliance need to be earned. It is important to meet your clients where they are at when they are celebrating and in pain. We also went into early specialization and accessibility. We all know that not every one has access to high-level sports clubs and teams growing up. Mike and I talk about how someone can be resourceful getting their younger athletes beneficial training and inspire their kids to be the best athletes and people they can be. In this episode, Mike and I discuss:- How proper training makes a true impact...which includes properly preparing your own child in grade school sports.- Compliance, trust, and the importance of interpersonal communication.- Why you should not do personal training solely for money. The UK's leading biohacker and returning guest to the show Tim Gray talks with Angela about the importance of getting the fundamentals right on the journey to health optimisation You need to understand what makes the body operate efficiently and then any other interference can be dealt with separately, Lifestyle is everything and achieving an optimal health mindset is about taking your body back to its core and implementing the things it needs to operate properly and then biohacking to move up to the next level   KEY TAKEAWAYS The body is a self-adapting machine so the less you feed it the less you feel hungry, the more you feed it the hungrier you feel Working out means moving every hour and exercising throughout the day With processed food products your senses are being tricked into thinking it tastes amazing, with clean fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat your senses are able to determine if you need it or not You should learn to use and trust your senses about what you need to eat It's okay to be silent and just think and this can be a game changer. Having a morning routine and five minutes of silence has really accelerated my progress My productivity has increased significantly with a good routine If you stand on grass there is a physiological response with the free electrons helping to stabilise cortisol and lower feelings of anxiety and stress Diet and gut health are the key, every symptom is a message telling you something Optimised sleep is when your body repairs the damage so you need to get enough good sleep If you are not hydrated or getting the right minerals you will not heal and your body and mind won't be able to work effectively The bio hacks you should be doing are about getting the fundamentals right – remove all processed food from your diet and get your gut optimised   BEST MOMENTS ‘The body is a very smart piece of machinery that we have been gifted ‘Standing on grass changes the way you feel, very quickly changing the electrical charge in the body' ‘You have to get the fundamentals right'   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization High Performance website   Health Optimisation Tim Gray Instagram      ABOUT THE GUEST Tim Gray Founder & CEO Health Optimisation Summit Tim's a dedicated health optimising Biohacker, a psychology specialist, entrepreneur and global speaker. Today we spoke with Owen Eastwood - Performance Coach, and Author of 'Belonging: The Ancient Code of Togetherness'. Owen is a performance coach with vast and diverse experience with high-profile elite sports teams around the world with a speciality around identity, storytelling, and culture. He has worked with the British Olympic Team, the English national football team, Harlequins RFC, Scotland rugby, the Command Group of NATO, the South African cricket team, the Royal Ballet School, and high performing corporate settings. Owen, a New Zealander based in the UK with roots from Ireland has a unique approach that looks to an evolutionary understanding of a team or organisation, leadership dynamics, cohesion, wisdom from our ancestors, and what contemporary institutions do very well. Today we start with the imagery on the front of the book and its origins, and why belonging is critical for reducing anxiety, improving confidence, and instilling trust. Owen unpacks the essence of the working environment and culture moving forward, psychological safety, and why a sense of connection and belonging is vital. We enquire about sustaining success with teams where there is staff and player turnover, emotional availability for young professionals, and the harmony between boundaries and autonomy - a profound concept called tapu noa. A highlight of this one, Owen eloquently shares the Maori concept of 'whakapapa' - for the sun is shining on us now. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Key Timestamps 0. 35 - The inspiration behind the book cover 2. 06 - Owen's current work with Harlequins + English FA 3. 52 - Wellbeing as a core responsibility 4. 52 - Recovery + creating space 6. 22 - Wellbeing monitoring in elite performance environments 8. 23 - Businesses need to focus on wellbeing 10. 04 - Belonging reducing anxiety + facing the challenge 10. 55 - Story of us 12. 43 - Looking back to get 13. 33 - 99% of our history we spent in tribes/kin 15. 18- Hard-wired sense of belonging 17. 07 - Good coaches create a shared identity 18. 08 - Becoming culturally mindful as a team 19. 35 - Tapu Noa described 22. 03 - Getting involved with the English FA 22. 53 - Listening + learning from Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, and others 24. 10 - Gareth Southgate being highly relational + authentic 26. 26 - Trust and how we build it 27. 50 - Leaders and Emotional availability 28. 10 - Southgate + omitting talented players from Euros 29. 48 - Whakapapa and the timeline of us 31. 23 - how leaders can create a true legacy 32. 24 - What does High Performance mean to you? Successful athletes and performance enthusiasts tend to be intrinsically motivated and the hard work, such as tough training sessions, big miles, or breakthrough days provides instant gratification and validation. It is a massive reward to complete a tough training camp. It feels good to produce your best running splits. You get energized from accomplishing something you may believe improbable. It is why we often say ‘Hard work is the easy thing.' Of course, it's not easy, but it is the thing that creates an appreciation of progress, improvement, and confidence-building. So where does recovery fit in, especially if we don't get that feeling of "instant gratification?" Most of us understand the role and importance of recovery, but few are really good at embracing it. In fact, most driven athletes don't even like it because it doesn't always breed confidence - at least in the short term. Today, Matt outlines the importance of recovery and why, believe it or not, REST IS ACTION. What is the role of recovery in your training? What does rest actually accomplish? Why is recovery a long-term investment in your performance? How should you incorporate active rest in your training, especially now in the post-season/holiday break? And, when and how should you re-engage with regular structure? Pulling back from hard work and integrating some easy days is not easy. It is even tougher when you see or hear about your peers or competition out there working hard while you, as they say, laze about. Rest is action. It isn't passive, lazy, or simply designed to recharge the batteries. It takes big-picture planning, pragmatism, and a commitment to the longer-term journey. THIS is why it takes courage. 0:00-03:38 Welcome, Episode Introduction, and a word from our sponsor, Inside Tracker - use code PURPLEPATCHPRO25 for 25% in the InsideTracker Store. 03:38-08:30 Squaddie Update - Exclusive Run Squad and Bike Squad Launching in January to first 50 athletes. Take away tips and insights into how you yourself can join the path to achieving your goals. KEY POINTSYou can start now - There's a certain mindset where people think they have to understand everything about a problem or a business opportunity before they make a start. You don't need to have all the answers before you start. You don't need to be an expert - You don't need to be a domain expert in almost any part of what you're doing. You just have to believe that you can be good with people and you can collaborate your way to success, whether that's through building a great team or hiring great consultants and experts to support your vision. The formula for success - Innovation is a combination of vision, opportunity and desire.Think beyond the category - High interest products can perform very well in low interest categories of products.Be Bold - Have the determination and the confidence to give something a go. You don't have to be an expert in the category to launch a brand.Be Determined - And once you've given it that go, be determined. Have confidence in yourself. She explains how cognitive function is impacted when there is a deficit of the brain selective nutrients that underpin the function of the brain and shares great practical advice on how to achieve optimum nutrition for great brain health KEY TAKEAWAYS The fundamental role of nutrition is often overlooked but what you eat ultimately affects your brain structure and function at both molecular and cellular levels 65% of the dry weight of the adult brain and retina is made up of complex specialised and unique fats called lipids It's estimated we have around a hundred billion neurones each coated in a myeline sheet made up of DHA insulating and aiding neurotransmission A child with optimal DHA can break down a question, understand and compute an answer A child with sub-optimal DHA will still be trying to figure out what the question is We need DHA and EPA for brain function in self signalling and for the regulation of specific systems such as serotonin and dopamine Serotonin governs feelings of well-being and happiness, dopamine is critical in motivation and feelings of pleasure and reward Adequate Omega 3 supports both dopamine and serotonin systems functioning well When dopamine is low individuals self-medicate to try and normalise the level by adding other things The quality of the maternal diet is critical for the well-being of the mother and the development of the baby's brain It's hypothesised that babies born prematurely miss out on the biomagnification process of fatty acids and lipids in the last trimester There is a bi-directional relationship between the brain and the gut so the health of the gut is critical We have to move beyond the prescription pad, combining strands of science to create a personalised, integrative approach BEST MOMENTS ‘Your brain is an organ like the heart and there are specific nutrients required to fuel the brain and to keep it working optimally' ‘Gut health is critical for brain health' ‘A multidisciplinary approach combining strands of science provides an amazing insight into the complex relationships within the body'   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization High Performance website   Dr. Rachel V. Well, we recorded for over 3 hours. This is the third of those conversations, where we discuss his most recent transformation. What started out as a commitment to himself to drop a little weight, tighten up his nutrition, and improve his daily energy levels and vitality led him down a path of discovery that was both shocking and challenging.Jamie employed the help of a number of professionals in the health and fitness industry to guide him on this journey, learning along the way that consistent bouts of antibiotics used to treat a skin condition, had caused massive problems with his gut health and immune system, ultimately leading to testing protocols which pointed to potentially cancerous cells. This conversation covers a lot of ground and provides a lot of thought-provoking dialogue and actionable takeaways for the audience.
