There’s no question that loneliness has become a global epidemic and is now being recognized as the invisible illness of our day and age. And the sad reality is that it’s always the undiagnosed illnesses that are the most dangerous and deadly. Dr. Mark Mayfield defines loneliness as: “The state of being unseen or unnoticed—relationally, emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. It’s marked by a deep sense of hopelessness.” And loneliness is more than just a feeling. It’s a disease pathway, meaning as loneliness increases, so do levels of anxiety, depression, substance use, and even suicide risk. According to a Cigna survey of over 20,000 adults: 54% felt no one truly knew them, 43% said their relationships didn’t feel meaningful, and 36% said they didn’t feel like they had anyone to turn to. Again, that’s not just concerning—it’s a crisis. Because no matter who you are, where you're from, or what you've been through, you were designed to be connected. For this reason as we are nearing the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are bringing on a very special guest who is an expert in human connection and leadership - Jordan Montgomery. Jordan is a USA Today bestselling author, renowned performance coach, and keynote speaker, trusted by elite business executives, sales teams, professional athletes, and entrepreneurs. Known for his dynamic presence and transformative insights, Jordan has shared the stage with countless luminaries such as Jon Gordon, John Maxwell, Angela Duckworth, and many others. Patrick Louchouarn, PhD, is our inspiring guest on the Faculty Factory Podcast this week. And speaking of inspiration, as discussed in this rich conversation, faculty members in general truly inspire Dr. Louchouarn with their creativity, engagement, and commitment to their profession. In fact, those who chose the path of academic health are particularly compelling to Dr. Louchouarn because much of their work is rooted in the fundamental question: “How can I improve health for others—individuals, communities, or through specific procedures like surgeries or prosthetics?” This mindset is quite extraordinary, and according to Dr. Louchouarn, it embodies maximum altruism. The one thing to be extra cautious about is that if we don't start conversations about purpose and core values, a disconnect may occur. The further we stray from the original motivation—the story of why someone chose to enter this particular health field—the greater that disconnect becomes, as discussed in this interview. With The Ohio State University in Columbus, he is a Leadership & Performance Coach and serves as Senior Vice Provost for Faculty within the Office of Academic Affairs. Why do we keep falling back into the same patterns despite our best efforts to change? The answer lies in what Josh Coats calls "the terror barrier" – a fascinating psychological mechanism that protects our deeply-held beliefs, even when those beliefs no longer serve us.Most personal development approaches miss the mark completely. They focus on creating temporary emotional highs through motivation, affirmations, and visualization without addressing what's happening beneath the surface. As Josh explains, "It's like putting band-aids on broken bones and wondering why nothing ever gets fixed." These approaches might feel good in the moment, but they can't penetrate the protective wall our subconscious mind builds around our core beliefs.True transformation requires making the unconscious conscious. Your brain doesn't distinguish between helpful and harmful beliefs – it simply fortifies whatever patterns have been repeatedly reinforced throughout your life. This explains why someone can intellectually agree with a new concept while consistently failing to implement it. Their subconscious is actively resisting the change. As Josh's favorite quote states: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate."This understanding is crucial for anyone seeking genuine change, whether in business, leadership, or personal growth. You cannot change behavior without first changing beliefs. This principle explains why so many experience a "yo-yo" pattern with their habits, actions, and emotions – they're addressing symptoms rather than root causes. True coaching provides the tools to dig deeper, uncover limiting beliefs, and plant new ones that actually support your goals.Ready to break through your terror barrier? Learn more about Josh's Life and Performance Coach certification at joshcoats.com, where you can join the waitlist for the next round starting in late June. Whether you want to become a coach or simply acquire powerful tools for personal and professional growth, understanding these principles will transform how you approach change forever. If you would like to learn more about working with Josh, and the Performance Coaching Certification, visit JoshCoats.com!

If you're navigating midlife and feeling like your body has started working against you—despite clean eating and consistent workouts—this episode is your wake-up call. Angela is joined by functional nutritionist Louise Digby to explore the lesser-known culprits behind stubborn weight, fatigue, and hormonal havoc in perimenopause. Forget willpower. This conversation reframes weight loss resistance through the lens of gut health, toxic load, and nutrient insufficiencies. From brittle nails and dry skin to unexpected acne flare-ups, Louise uncovers the hidden metabolic and hormonal messages your body is sending—and how to respond with science, not shame. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gut Health Trumps Willpower: Many women have gut imbalances without symptoms—but these silent issues can stall fat loss and disrupt hormones. Toxic Load Sabotages Hormones: Environmental toxins from skincare, pollutants, and food can overwhelm your liver and impair hormone detox pathways. Nutrient Insufficiencies Are Common: Even with a healthy diet, modern stress and poor soil deplete key nutrients like magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin D. Metabolic Clues You’re Missing: Cold hands, brittle nails, poor recovery, and stubborn weight can all signal compromised metabolic health—not laziness. What if creatine isn’t just for bodybuilders—but a potent, research-backed tool for women’s health, performance, and longevity? In this powerhouse episode, Angela sits down with Darren Candow, a leading expert on creatine and Professor and Director of the Aging Muscle and Bone Health Laboratory at the University of Regina, Canada. Darren is also the Director of Research for the Athlete Health and Performance Initiative and past Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies. Together, they unpack the groundbreaking science behind one of the most misunderstood supplements. From brain energetics and mood stability to bone density, fat loss, and anti-aging, this is your comprehensive guide to creatine beyond the gym. Angela and Darren explore the myths, the mechanisms, and the real-world applications of creatine—especially for women navigating perimenopause, high stress, and cognitive load. Whether you’re looking to train smarter, improve memory and sleep, or simply age with more energy and resilience, this masterclass will change the way you think about creatine forever. Dosage Evolution: 10g/day may be optimal for full muscle, brain, and bone saturation—especially in women. Body Composition Benefits: Contrary to myth, creatine reduces body fat over time and improves lean mass, even in women. Mental Health & Resilience: Early evidence shows potential benefits for depression, anxiety, and sleep quality. Safer Than You Think: Creatine does not cause kidney issues or hair loss—these myths are finally being debunked with new data. Emerging Synergies: Stacks with protein, collagen, or taurine may enhance its effects—especially for brain and recovery support. What if the key to lasting behavior change, personal growth, and feeling more confident wasn't about setting epic goals—but running tiny experiments? In this mind-expanding episode, Angela sits down with Anne-Laure Le Cunff—founder of Ness Labs and author of Tiny Experiments—to explore how small tests rooted in curiosity can lead to powerful transformations in every area of your life. From alcohol-free living to productivity hacks, sleep rhythms, and navigating health advice in the age of information overwhelm, this conversation will shift your perspective on goal-setting and self-optimization. Anne-Laure shares why most people get stuck trying to rationalize decisions instead of following data from their own lived experience—and how becoming an “agent of change” helps us reclaim control in an ever-changing world. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The Problem with Pros & Cons Lists: We often use them to justify decisions we've already made rather than explore truth objectively. How to Run Tiny Experiments: Focus on curiosity, one measurable variable, and a fixed timeframe to discover what truly works for you. Why Habit Challenges Often Fail: Without curiosity and internal motivation, behavior doesn’t shift—experimentation creates sustainable change. The Plus-Minus-Next Framework: A simple self-reflection tool to assess what’s working, what’s not, and what to try next—without judgment. Letting Go of Epic Goals: Big dreams can be paralyzing—often, purpose and passion emerge through action, not planning. Becoming Your Own Scientist: Whether it’s a new supplement, workout time, or meditation habit, take charge with your own data-informed experiments. Angela presents a bitesize in which she explores the profound impact of stress on metabolism and female sex hormones, drawing insights from the works of renowned author Lara Briden. They discuss the autonomic nervous system's role in metabolic health, emphasising the importance of balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The conversation highlights practical stress management techniques, such as yoga and outdoor activities, and introduces key supplements that can support metabolic health, including magnesium, taurine, choline, inositol, and glycine KEY TAKEAWAYS: Stress significantly affects metabolism and female sex hormones, with the autonomic nervous system playing a crucial role in regulating these processes. Balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems can lead to improved metabolic health and reduced premenstrual symptoms. Monitoring heart rate variability is an effective, non-invasive method to assess the health of the autonomic nervous system. Higher HRV indicates better adaptability and balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, which is essential for overall health. For women of reproductive age, regular ovulation is a strong indicator of healthy metabolism and a well-functioning autonomic nervous system. Tracking menstrual cycles and ovulation can provide valuable insights into metabolic health. Key nutrients that are often deficient in modern diets include magnesium, taurine, choline, inositol, and glycine. These nutrients support metabolic health, calm the nervous system, and improve insulin sensitivity. BEST MOMENTS "The autonomic nervous system is very involved in metabolic health... it's controlling blood sugar, hunger, energy expenditure." "Regular ovulation is a pretty good sign that metabolism is healthy, that the autonomic nervous system is working well." "Magnesium and taurine... both help to support healthy mitochondria. They calm the nervous system." "I think so many women... are still carrying a lot of that load... that is actually really wreaking havoc with their metabolism." How to Reverse Biological Age, Balance Hormones & Slow Down Ageing—The Power of Glycans for Women's Health | Nikolina Lauc

High Performance Health

Angela dives deep with special guest Nikolina Lauc on the subject of biological aging and the role of glycans in our immune system. They discuss how glycans, complex sugars that coat our cells, influence our biological aging and immune function, particularly in the context of chronic inflammation. Nikolina explains the differences between various biological age tests, such as telomere and methylation testing, highlighting the advantages of glycan testing for individual assessments. KEY TAKEAWAYS Glycans are complex sugars that play a crucial role in cellular communication and immune function. They influence biological aging by affecting inflammation and immune responses, with changes in glycan patterns indicating shifts in health status over time. Biological age can differ significantly from chronological age, as it reflects the state of one's immune system and overall health. Glycan testing provides a more accurate measure of biological age, allowing individuals to understand their health trajectory better. Chronic stress, whether from work or personal life, can accelerate biological aging. Lifestyle factors such as exercise, sleep, and nutrition significantly influence glycan profiles, with moderate exercise being beneficial while excessive training can lead to increased inflammation. Women experience a notable acceleration in biological aging during perimenopause due to declining estrogen levels, which can lead to increased inflammation. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help mitigate this effect and improve glycan age. BEST MOMENTS "Glycans are complex sugars... Most of our molecules have glycans as a component, so all cells are coated in these complex sugars." "Bad news is also good news if you're looking at the glycan perspective, because we would see these different glycosylation patterns change up to 10 years prior to symptoms." "Stress is in your mind or it's a mind response... We're the only species that can create this fight or flight without actually having to run from a lion." "If you have acceleration in glycogen as an individual, this is predictive of an outcome, mortality, morbidity." Metabolic Freedom: The Missing Key to Fat Loss, Energy & Hormonal Balance | Ben Azadi

High Performance Health

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 20, 2025 52:46

Angela welcomes back Ben Azadi, author of the new book "Metabolic Freedom" to delve into the critical differences between metabolic freedom and the common state of metabolic prison, where individuals are trapped in a cycle of sugar burning and insulin resistance. Ben shares insights from his extensive research, stressing the importance of maintaining balanced blood sugar levels and the role of muscle mass in enhancing insulin sensitivity, while Angela recounts her personal journey with PCOS and how dietary changes transformed her health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many individuals are trapped in a "metabolic prison," primarily burning sugar for energy, which can lead to insulin resistance and various health issues. In contrast, metabolic freedom allows the body to efficiently switch between burning sugar and fat, promoting better energy levels and overall health. High insulin levels are a precursor to metabolic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease. Regular testing of fasting insulin levels is crucial for assessing metabolic health, with optimal levels being in the single digits. Increasing muscle mass through strength training enhances insulin sensitivity and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Maintaining muscle as one ages can prevent metabolic slowdown and promote better health outcomes. Focusing solely on calorie counting can be misleading. Instead, prioritizing the quality of food—such as whole, unprocessed foods—can lead to better hormonal balance and overall health, making weight loss a natural side effect of improved health. Chronic stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels, which promote fat storage and hinder fat burning. Managing stress through various methods, including exercise and mindfulness, is essential for maintaining metabolic health and overall well-being. BEST MOMENTS "Unfortunately, most people are in a metabolic prison. They're handcuffed by food in order to have some short energy... when you are stuck burning sugar, it's not a fun way to live." "I think the misconception is that if we don't have good control of our metabolism, then we're going to look overweight. I certainly didn't... I was slim and fit and looked fine." "High levels of insulin... it's the first domino to fall that leads to all these metabolic diseases. It starts with high blood pressure, you start gaining weight, and then it's pre-diabetes." "We have a slight advantage insofar as we have a menstrual cycle and we can check what's going on... I think that maybe we're a little more conscious of our health because we get these signs." What if the secret to burning more fat wasn’t a fancy diet or punishing workout, but a few simple daily upgrades you could start today? In this solo Bite Size Biohacks episode, Angela answers your most asked question—how to get leaner and boost fat loss in time for summer. Whether you're looking to shift a little or a lot, she shares exactly how to turn your body into a fat-burning machine—without resorting to extreme measures. From muscle-building strategies to protein timing and the underrated power of NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis), Angela reveals the three core principles that will elevate your metabolism, reshape your physique, and keep your energy levels steady all day long. Expect practical, science-backed tips you can implement immediately—and the mindset shift that will make it sustainable. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Master NEAT Movement: Non-exercise movement like walking and even fidgeting can boost daily fat burn by up to 20%. Why Muscle is Metabolic Gold: Muscle burns 2–3x more calories than fat—even at rest—making strength training non-negotiable. Protein is a Fat-Burning Accelerator: Protein has a thermic effect up to 30%, helping you burn more calories simply by eating it. Don’t Diet—Build Muscle Instead: Sustainable fat loss comes from increasing lean muscle, not slashing calories or fasting windows. Fuel Your Day with the Right First Meal: A high-protein breakfast stabilises blood sugar, cuts cravings, and boosts morning energy. Strength After 40 is Non-Negotiable: As we age, we lose insulin sensitivity and muscle—especially around menopause—so strength training is crucial. Angela engages in a heartfelt conversation with Sarah Rusbatch, an expert on women's relationships with alcohol. As Sarah shares her journey of over a thousand days of sobriety, they delve into the concept of "grey area drinking," where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. They also highlight the unique challenges women face, including societal pressures, hormonal influences, and the impact of alcohol on mental health and relationships KEY TAKEAWAYS: Grey area drinking refers to a spectrum of alcohol consumption where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. This includes using alcohol for stress relief or social confidence, leading to a reliance that can affect self-esteem and overall well-being. Women are more vulnerable to the health risks associated with alcohol due to physiological differences, such as lower levels of the enzyme that metabolises alcohol. This can lead to increased risks of alcohol-related diseases, including breast cancer, especially as women age and experience hormonal changes. When individuals stop drinking, it can take up to two years for neurotransmitters like GABA and dopamine to rebalance after years of alcohol use. This imbalance can lead to increased anxiety and stress, making it crucial to find alternative ways to manage stress and promote relaxation. Stopping alcohol consumption can create social hurdles, as many individuals find themselves in circles of other drinkers. This can lead to feelings of isolation or fear of being perceived as boring. BEST MOMENTS "Gray area drinking describes the place between someone who rarely drinks and someone who has physical dependency." "I believe alcohol keeps women small and it erodes their self-confidence and their self-belief." "You do need somebody. I always say, don't do it alone." "The irony is most people drink alcohol to relieve their stress."
