"I didn't realize how strong I was until, you know, I got into therapy and started to understand all the things that I've overcome." - Ron Jenkins Read the transcript of this episode here: https://app.swellai.com/t/tp_01JFJJKB7XP00HAV5P6H6ETQGJ EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I had the privilege of speaking with Ron Jenkins, a remarkable individual whose journey through the complexities of foster care and adoption is both harrowing and inspiring. Ron's story begins with the tragic loss of his mother as a young child, leading him and his siblings into the foster care system. He was eventually adopted by a woman who, rather than providing a safe haven, exploited the system for drug money, resulting in a chaotic and violent environment. Ron candidly shares the trauma he experienced, including the loss of several brothers to violence and the pervasive fear that defined his childhood. Despite these challenges, he made a conscious decision to steer clear of gangs and drugs, ultimately finding a mentor who changed the trajectory of his life. This mentor not only provided guidance but also became a father figure, helping Ron navigate his way to a football scholarship at Fresno State University. Throughout our conversation, Ron emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy, therapy, and the need to break the cycle of trauma. He encourages listeners, especially men, to seek help and recognize that they deserve the same opportunities as anyone else. Ron's journey of healing and his commitment to helping at-risk youth through mentorship and advocacy work is truly inspiring. We also touched on the impact of sexual abuse in Ron's life and how it shaped his relationships. He highlights the importance of addressing these issues through therapy, which has been instrumental in his healing process. As we wrapped up, Ron shared exciting news about a movie being made about his life, and he invited anyone interested in supporting this project to reach out. This episode is a powerful reminder of resilience, the importance of community, and the potential for transformation, even in the face of overwhelming adversity. I hope Ron's story resonates with you and inspires you to seek help, advocate for yourself, and support others in their journeys. ===============

In this solo episode, Dr. Derrick Burgess is here to share his gratefulness regarding life, sports, and medicine. He will share with us how God has blessed the different areas of his life and how he was consistent from the first day of his journey in this podcast until now.    What are the incredibly unexpected things that have happened in your life?    The thankful heart opens our eyes to a multitude of blessings that continually surround us. There can be no doubt that the God of Almighty has given every one of us something to be thankful for. Though there may be times when other people have more of what we have, we still receive reasons to say "thank you." Despite the hardships we encountered, we fought, stood firm, and thrived.    The annual celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States is arriving! Thus, we must take this excellent opportunity to take a step back and consider how God has blessed the various facets of our lives. Hence, we must never forget the hands stretched to support us amid our struggling days. Those people who made themselves available to contribute to our growth. Those few who still stand believe we can do something great out of the dreams we keep on chasing. Indeed, we can never know beforehand what wonderful things wait for each of us. Still, we understand that the quickest way to contentment is to be grateful.   "During these times with rising inflation and lumen recession fears, the most affordable thing and gift we can give this holiday season is to give thanks." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Introduction + Episode Snippet (00:00:14) Words of gratitude: A solo episode for the Thanksgiving week (00:01:34) Advertisement: Zero Gravity Skin: a leader in the aesthetic device market. Being able to interview people, share their stories and still be able to pull out small nuggets and help people is kind of learning gems along the way." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   "There are no steps and wasted. Whatever you're going through today to concentrate, hone your skills, and one day, it's going to pay off." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   "Many times, when we want to be successful, people tell you to have to be a go-getter. You have to go out and take what you want. But more important than being a go-getter is being a go-giver." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   "Law of Value: Your true worth is how much more you give others in value than you receive in payment." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   "Law of Compensation: Your income depends on how many people you serve and how well you serve them." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   "The law of influence is determined by how abundantly you place others' interests." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   "Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself." – Dr. Derrick Bugess   "Law of reciprocation: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving." – Dr. Derrick Bugess     Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com     This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. If you have a differently wired child who is athletic and/or is into sports, this episode is for you. My guest is Susan Stout, the founder Own Beat Athlete, a new resource aimed at helping athletic coaches understand their athletes who march to a different beat. Susan knows from personal experience as an athlete herself, a former coach, and the parent of an athletic differently wired child, that many great athletes can be challenging to coach because of their wiring—they can be easily frustrated, disruptive, forgetful, inconsistent. But she also knows that they can be a teams' greatest asset. Susan's goal is to equip others with what she wishes she knew when she was a coach, and support and bring out the best in the many athletes who didn't fit the mold, with a specific focus on athletes with ADHD, learning differences, and anxiety. This is a really interesting conversation and Susan's resources are a great starting point for listeners who want to bridge that gap of knowledge between their child's behavior and their sports coach. I hope you enjoy it.Susan Stout is an advocate for athletes who are wired differently and struggle to participate or reach their potential in sports. She specializes in ADHD, learning differences and anxiety. Susan is the founder of Own Beat Athlete, a project to provide athletic coaches with the understanding and tools they need to help their differently wired athletes thrive. She brings to the work her perspective as a swimmer, coach, teacher, lawyer and mom to an avid and talented young athlete with ADHD and dyslexia. Things you'll learn from this episodeHow and when parents should let athletic coaches know about a child's wiringWhat kind of unique gifts differently wired athletes bring to their sportsWhat the common challenges are for differently wired kids participating in sportsHow parents can talk with their kids about learning how to self-advocate for themselves with their coachesSusan's thoughts on how willing coaches are to better understand and support their differently wired athletesHow Own Beat Athlete supports coaches (and parents of athletes) to know how to practically support and problem solve with challenges related to neurodifferencesWhat parents should look for to know whether or not they should step in Resources mentioned for coaching differently wired athletesOwn Beat AthleteOwn Beat Athlete / Susan Stout on TwitterSusan Stout on FacebookOwn Beat Athlete's Coaches' ToolkitSupport the showConnect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram
