Sometimes the most important thing we learn from our parents is what NOT to do when we become parents ourselves.I am incredibly grateful to have my friend and mentor Larry Hagner on this week's Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show. After experiencing a tumultuous childhood with an absent father and a barrage of abusive and toxic male figures, Larry decided he would be NOTHING like the men in his life. That desire for excellence is what propelled him to start The Dad Edge (formerly known as The Good Dad Project), where he empowers men to create legendary marriages, epic connections with their kids, master their personal finances, optimize their physical, mental, and emotional health, and forge a strong legacy for generations. In this candid conversation, Larry opens up about his contentious relationship with his biological father and how it ultimately drove him to start The Dad Edge. We delve into the power of The Dad Edge movement and community, how to effectively and efficiently manage relationships, the art of conversational excellence, the key to having an extraordinary marriage, and seemingly simple steps you can take right now to engage more with your loved ones.As a husband, father, business owner, and hard-charging man myself, I found this conversation deeply inspiring, and I hope it compels you to reflect on your own relationships so that you can live legendary and become the best person for your family, your community, and for your future. As always, if you love what you hear on this show, then do me a favor and subscribe, leave a positive rating and review, and share this episode with a friend or loved one whom you think could benefit. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Larry Hagner shares with us the humble beginnings of the Dad Edge. He opens up his heart and shares a story that inspired him to create the Dad Edge. Before Larry statrted the Dad Edge, he was a leader in his workplace. However, his marriage and relationship with his kids were failing. One night in 2012, Larry had a moment that would change the course of his life forever. Larry spanked his four year old son out of anger and hit him so hard that he fell on the ground. He went to help him up and his son looked at him as if he were a monster. From that moment on, Larry knew he had to make a change or his relationships would suffer for the rest of his life. As a faith-based man, Larry had a moment of divine intervention. He sat down in front of the computer and the words "Good Dad Project" came out onto a Facebook page. From that moment on, Good Dad Project/The Dad Edge was born. Larry made a committment to learn something new every day that would help him become the husband and father he was meant to be. If you want to have more patience in your life, you have to surrender to the fact that you are always going to have stress in your life. Whether it's professional, mental, physical, or emotional, stress is always going to be present. However, that doesn't mean that we can't manage it with a little patience. Patience does not start in the moment of chaos; patience starts from the moment your feet hit the ground in the morning. Patience and emotional resiliency do not come naturally. There are skills needed to learn patience. Patience is tied to emotional resiliency and mental toughness, which are learned through consistent practice and a dedication to becoming a better person. The other thing Larry talks to us about today is failure. In Larry's sales job that he had before the Dad Edge, he was nominated to become the sales manager. However, he lacked the necessary skills to be a leader in the workforce. After he was humiliated in an interview because he didn't know any of the leadership questions, he went out to learn those skills. What Larry learned from this event was that there is no failure, only learning. He learned the necessary leadership skills he needed for that job, went back a year later, nailed the interview, and got the job. If he had defaulted to failure and let it consume his thoughts, he wouldn't have gotten the job. He took that failure, learned from it, and came back harder than ever. The moral of the story is to never let failure define you. You can take a failure in life and turn it around to be a lesson that you learn from. If you give up, you take away any chance you have of improving yourself and turning the situation around. This week on @champandthetramp we welcome Larry Hagner to the show. Larry is the soul host of @thedadedge podcast and creator or The Good Dad Project as well as the author of numerous books. This was a first for Frankie and Roger, dedicating an entire episode to fatherhood and digging deep into what motivates us as dads as well as the thing’s we struggle with. Larry flew in from St. Louis just to do our show and even brought along his own videographer to capture our back and forth banter and upload to his outlets as well. We were happy to have Larry on and I think all dads out there can benefit from listening to this podcast as well as many moms who may want a look into a different perspective and how three different dads in three very different scenarios approach fatherhood. We enjoyed having Larry in and don’t forget to check out Frankie and Rogers interviews with Larry on his page @thedadedge . There is no perfect parent. JOURNEY OF A CHRISTIAN DAD – DAN LUIGS PT 3When you are single, you only worry about you. Once you are married, you start to think about how you can bless your wife (or husband if you are a woman listening to this). Then, when you become a father, it suddenly dawns on you that you have a FAMILY. I can remember thinking, at the ripe old age of 19, that I was married and a DAD! I was still a teenager! I was still trying to find my way and now, I had a family that was looking to ME to be a provider and to be a leader. And, I may add, I was NOT born again at that time (and was not born again for many years from that time, sad to say). But, what do you do when that realization comes? What do you do when your family is now looking to you to be the leader? That is what we will be discussing today with my guest, Dan Luigs. Dan is US Army Veteran, praise God. Dan is a coach for the Accelerate Mastermind Group. He is on the advisory board for the Good Dad Project and has been featured on the Good Dad Podcast. Dan is also an insurance salesman at “The Insurance Store” located in Chesterfield, Missouri and is a leader in insurance sales through using referrals. And he is the host of the “Journey of the Christian Dad Podcast!” Praise God! Now, I’ve heard your first episode of your podcast where you talk about the conversation you had with God about starting your podcast. Tell us how you heard from the Lord about starting your podcast… One thing I love about doing interviews with so many people, is that I learn so much just by doing these interviews. Are you finding that out as you are doing your interviews? Tell us about your Facebook Group…When did you start the group and what is the purpose and what do you do there? Dan, this is so needful in the society we live in today. If someone wanted to get more information from you, to get in contact with you or maybe to do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can they get in touch with you? Folks, especially you men out there, Dan Luigs is here to help. You need to understand the Spiritual hierarchy that the Lord has established in the family. The responsibility is shared, yes, between the husband and the wife. But God will be holding the husband and fathers responsible for ensuring the family is operating and growing and thriving according to Christian principles. We need to make sure we are leading our family correctly and Biblically. I urge you to get in touch with Dan Luigs. Use the links down below. Get in touch and see how he can help you. It may just be to give you some encouragement. It may be more. But you will not know unless you ask. And that is why I asked Dan to come on the program today, to explain this to you in ways I could not communicate. He’s the pro at this. He’s provided his contact information and I will put those links in the show notes below. So get in touch with Dan Luigs today. What made you believe that? What made you realize that you needed be the Spiritual leader in the family and home? How difficult was it for you to start out sharing your Faith? What do you recall as that pivotal moment when you decided you were going to share your Faith and if that caused a rift, so be it? Regardless of the childhood you had, you can still be a kickass dad. No matter your circumstances, good or bad, all fathers have a choice… To either be leaders, providers, caregivers and mentors to their children or fall victim to their past. Sure, it’s not as clear cut as that but once you’ve decided to become a parent, you are now responsible for another life. It’s up to you, to shape and mold your kids and be the foundation of strength that all dads need to be for their families. Larry Hagner, the founder of The Good Dad Project and the host of the Dad’s Edge Podcast, joins me this week for a long-overdue conversation. A father of four boys, Larry knows first-hand how difficult it can be to raise a family while maintaining your marriage/partnership/life and your sanity. I appreciated Larry's openness and vulnerability so much during this interview, as he was just as willing to talk about his own faults and flaws as he was willing to talk about his triumphs and accomplishments — as a husband, father, business owner, and more. I talk a lot about motherhood on this podcast, because that's the world I know. On this episode, we get a father's perspective. Larry Hagner, founder of the Good Dad Project, joins me to discuss growing up with ADHD, raising a child with ADHD, and being an intentional man and dad to better connect with your kids and support their journey to success. Connection is the key — "without connection you have no influence."
Inside look into the Dad's Edge Alliance with John Williams John is part of a group called the Dad Edge Alliance, it is a large community of individuals from all walks of life who empower each other to become better fathers, husbands, and leaders. They discuss topics that revolve around the family and life in general, and share ways in which they can cope or improve their wellbeing. This community allows a safe environment for them to share and open themselves up without fear of being judged. This podcast is an inside look into meetings these fathers may have on a regular basis. Info on the DEA(The Dad Edge Alliance) The DEA was started by The GOOD Dad Project and its founder, Larry Hagnar, he founded the organization because at one point in his life he felt dissatisfied from his work, disconnected from his family, and had no clarity or direction in his life. He reached out to other fathers and realized that he was not alone, in this he realized that there is no degree or formal education on how to be a dynamic father, husband, or leader. He saw as time goes on, many people's circles of friends diminish and leave them to fight the battle alone. So Larry formed The GOOD Dad Project so fathers who had found themselves in a similar predicament he was in, could have a community to support each other and hone their skills so they could lead epic lives. https://gooddadproject.com/dad-edge-alliance/ *Disclaimer* mild language in the later half of the podcast #wakeup #getup #empathy #perspective #positivity #encouragement #hardwork #progress #life #love #community #family #brotherhood __ We look forward to your feedback! Larry Hagner is the founder of the Good Dad Project and the author of The Dad's Edge: 9 Simple Ways to Have: Unlimited Patience, Improved Relationships, and Positive Lasting Memories as well as Daddy Will Always Love and Protect You. He is an advocate for fathers and believes many men want to be good fathers but, for a number of reasons, struggle with that role. Based on his own experiences, including his failures, he’s dedicated himself to helping them.In this episode, Stew and Larry talk about men’s roles in their families; the obstacles they face at home, at work, and in society that conspire against them being the dads they want to be for their children; the changes occurring in men’s and fathers’ roles; how the pandemic is having an impact on dads at home and at work; and much more. If you’re a father, then here is an invitation, a challenge, for you, once you’ve listened to the conversation. Think of one thing on which you need help from someone in your life -- support of some kind, any kind, that will enable you to be a better father -- and then find a way of asking for it. Pay attention to what it feels like to request help and how the person(s) you’re asking reacts. What do you discover? Larry Hagner is the host of The Dad Edge Podcast, a podcast dedicated to helping men become the best versions of themselves so they can raise the best versions of their children. While packing for a move to a new house, Larry hit rock bottom as a dad when he lost his cool. What he did afterward made him turn inward for some deep introspection. And what came out of that was The Good Dad Project, and later, The Dad Edge Podcast. Larry breaks down some important must-do's for fathers, like winning the mornings and being transparent. “There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in.” –Graham Greene Larry Hagner is the founder of The Dad Edge (formerly The Good Dad Project), a strong community of fathers with a simple but powerful mission: to help dads become the best, strongest, and happiest versions of themselves so that they can guide their kids to the best versions of themselves, too. However, as a kid, Larry's greatest fear was being a father. Growing up, he never saw a successful marriage modeled for him – he “always looked at marriage as a step to divorce” – and he didn't have any positive male role models to speak of. From that scared kid to the epic father that Larry is today is a huge gap – so I had to ask when the moment was that he opened the door to let the future in. It all started with focusing on personal development. Larry, like a lot of us, was heavy growing up, and it really affected the way he thought about himself and approached life. However, he was pushed to wake up early, put the work in, and ended up losing 40 pounds over the course of a few months. “I never felt so good in my life. I hated waking up that early, but we did it and that was the beginning of a whole new world for me and that's when I started to really love fitness... and that's when the future really opened up for me.” You can see how that experience shaped the mission of The Dad Edge, too. It's not all about relationship counseling or parenting tactics – it's about becoming the best version of yourself so that you can share that with your children, and for most people, that requires taking action to fill a void in your life. There's a movement in The Dad Edge Alliance, of which I am a proud member, to “own your shit,” and that requires leaning into a place where you can be vulnerable and viewing that vulnerability as strength. We don't have to be invincible, we don't have to be perfect, and we don't have to have all the answers. It's okay to reach out for help from your partner, or a wonderful community of like-minded people who will support you. Because none of us have this whole life thing all figured out, but together we can do better than any of us can do alone. -- Resources: Learn more at http://thedadedge.com/ (TheDadEdge.com) Join the FB community: The Dad Edge - Real Dads with Purpose Listen: The Dad Edge Podcast Read: The Dad's Edge: 9 Simple Ways to Have: Unlimited Patience, Improved Join The Dad Edge Alliance Relationships, and Positive Lasting Memories -- We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full-service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Today on the show… We have my friend, Larry Yatch. Now Larry is a special breed of guy: he was bound and determined to be a Navy fighter pilot since he saw the movie Top Gun in 3rd grade, but that changed when a friend gave him a Navy SEAL sweatshirt which would redirect the course of his life. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he would pass the hardest military training in the world to become a Navy SEAL and serve our country with distinction for 10 years as an officer. His military service ended when he was medically retired, but his service to our country continued in the form of building businesses to help others build and execute in high performing teams at work and at home. I met Larry 2 years ago through the Good Dad Project podcast, and have taken a couple of his training courses since then. During the course of that training, I've gotten to know Larry on a more personal level and I'm honored to call him one of my closest friends. He and his wife Anne have created a powerful team in their family and they are creating an amazing impact on the world while leaving a legacy of adventure and service for their boys. In our time today we'll talk about: Lessons from Navy SEAL career: -being able to persevere and self regulate -if it hurts, if I encounter some resistance, that's the direction I get to head into for growth and self awareness -focus on the good things that are coming, instead of the bad things that are around you Striving, struggling, and suffering today for a little treat of happiness tomorrow is the trap of being “normal.” We can't be normal if we want to get exceptional results! Imagine striving your whole life just to be normal, just to get to “average.” Our subconscious choices are controlled by our environment. For Larry and Anne, they needed to change their environment every 6 months until those less effective habits are broken! Two gifts from the SEALs: -Team: huge level of love, care, and support from teammates -An endless supply of the opportunity to be in a flow state Larry's challenge this week: Having a difficult, challenging, or even a conversation out of the norm with our wives can be super scary! A physical challenge for many of us is easy, so we're going about this challenge a bit differently today. Write down what it would FEEL like to have our ideal life today, not tomorrow. What would it FEEL like? What would it LOOK like? What's there? What's not there? Then, share how this ideal life feels and looks with your wife! Ask her what her ideal life today would FEEL and LOOK like to be aware of what the GAP between both might be. For many of us in relationships, there is often a GAP between the life we as fathers want to live and the dreams we want to achieve for our families and what our spouse might see as possible or be comfortable with. How many of us would want to bring our wives' vision for the ideal life closer to ours to positively impact our family and others? how many of us would want to close the gap so that making decisions together would be easier and more fun? If you find that there is a GAP, reach back out to Larry or to me to put you in touch with Larry. He has created an incredible set of tools to help anyone who doesn't want to be normal create the life you want for yourself, your connection with your spouse, your family and your impact in the world. For Larry, he would have confidence that they were on adventures as a family that enable them to learn as individuals and as a family while impacting the world in a measurable way. Larry Hagner is the founder of The Good Dad Project and author of bestselling book: "The Dad's Edge." His story and passion for being a father is a bit unique. Larry grew up virtually in “fatherless environment” for most of my life. He didn't meet his real father until he was 30 years old. As fate would have it, their paths crossed when he walked into a coffee shop eight years ago. They now have a great relationship now and spend a great deal of time together. It was really through his own childhood struggles that Larry realized true passion for being a dad. Children are not born with manuals and the Journey of Fatherhood doesn't necessarily come with a “map.” There are challenges, twists, and turns along the way. Larry says: "as much as we truly enjoy our children and being a father, we tend to internalize our struggles. When we do that, we get distracted and stressed out. As a result, we do not enjoy the Journey of being a Dad as much as we would really like to." Larry is not a psychologist or counselor in family dynamics. He doesn't have any accolades behind my name. He's an everyday dad trying to do the best job he can. He strives to be the best version of himself so he can guide his kids to be the best version of themselves.
