Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the Steelers should start rookie quarterback Will Howard in the 2025 season. There is obviously a chance that Howard, the team's sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, wins the job outright. Mason Rudolph should not provide overwhelming competition and Aaron Rodgers still remains a free agent months into the offseason. But what about if Howard doesn't win the job? Should the Steelers put their finger on the scale to play Howard, just so that they can see him before they have to make a decision about whether or not to draft a quarterback -- and how highly -- in the 2026 NFL Draft? Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the Steelers will be willing to sign a second wide receiver to a long-term contract extension after already agreeing to a deal with DK Metcalf, and what a new contract with George Pickens might look like. The Steelers have not signed multiple wide receivers to big-time contracts in their recent past, but that also came while the team was paying big money to Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. The doesn't mean they won't pay two receivers while they're not paying a big-time quarterback. Part of the money that quarterback is earning is the assumption that he won't need high-priced receivers to succeed. Will the Steelers want to extend Pickens? It doesn't seem that they're charging into the offseason with that as the plan. After around $300,000 in fines over the last two seasons, the Steelers would probably like to see an increased level of maturity from Pickens before committing to a long-term deal. If they do decide to sign Pickens, how much will he cost? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Pittsburgh draft board is run by Andy Weidl, with inputs from all of the team's coaches and scouts, including Khan and Mike Tomlin. That board will determine who the Steelers will draft, based on who is available at the time. Today, it's whether or not the Steelers would be a good destination for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. On Monday, ESPN's Mike Greenberg broke down how not being taken early in the draft is not necessarily a death sentence for a first-round quarterback. Greenberg pointed out that the second player taken has been better in each of the last two classes, and most of the top quarterbacks in the league were not the first player taken. Unsaid is the idea that those players had more success because the teams that draft at the top often do because of their own incompetence. Have Steelers Changed Course on Drafting a QB? | Steelers Morning Rush

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 15:42

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the idea that the Steelers have changed course when it comes to selecting a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft. At the end of the 2024 NFL Draft cycle, the two positions that the Steelers needed to address but didn't have the capital to do so were wide receiver and defensive tackle. The Steelers immediately turned to the trade market to address the acute need at wide receiver, first targeting Brandon Aiyuk before eventually landing DK Metcalf earlier this offseason. The need at defensive tackle was more big picture, so the assumption was that they'd wait until the 2025 NFL Draft, a class that looked deep at the position. When the Steelers top brass spent the 2025 Senior Bowl obsessing over that position, it seemed likely that was the way they'd lean in this year's draft. But things have changed. The Steelers were unable to work out a deal with either of their incumbent quarterback options, and haven't been able to land Aaron Rodgers, either, leaving their depth chart relatively barren late into April. There's also some shifting winds about who might be available to them at quarterback, with the chance of Shedeur Sanders falling to No. 21 overall now becoming likely enough that the team is taking it seriously. Alan #steelers #herewego #nfl CONNECT WITH STEELERS NOW: Steelers Now: https://steelersnow.com SN on Twitter: https://twitter.com/pghsteelersnow SN on FB: https://facebook.com/steelersnow SN on Insta: https://www.instagram.com/pghsteelersnow/ Learn more about your ad choices. Is Aaron Rodgers Holding Up T.J. Watt Deal? | Steelers Morning Rush

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2025 15:23

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the idea that the Steelers are waiting to resolve things with free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers before they negotiate a contract extension for star outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Watt brought the topic of his contract extension into the forefront with his curious social media post, but in reality, the Steelers do not generally talk contact extensions with current players until later in the summer. They deal with trying to re-sign players before they hit free agency, then talk to free agents, then deal with the draft, wrap up second-wave free agency in May, and then deal with their own players in the summer. That's the way they've always done business, and while part of the idea behind Watt's post might have been to develop a sense of urgency with his process, the Steelers not wanting to talk turkey with their defensive star doesn't have anything to do with Rodgers. The Steelers have plenty plenty of salary cap space available to sign Rodgers right now -- well over $30 million -- and they can painlessly make plenty of more with a couple of restructures. That's more than enough money to sign Rodgers now. A new deal with Watt is likely to reduce his 2025 salary cap hit, and could reduce it substantially, so the cap is not at all standing in the way of the Steelers doing business with both Rodgers and Watt. Today, it's the pending contract extension for star outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Watt will almost certainly get a contract extension in the range of the four-year, $160 million contract the Cleveland Browns gave Myles Garrett earlier this offseason. Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2025 18:43

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the names for the positions that defensive linemen line up in. The Steelers traditionally play in a 3-4 defense, which uses a nose tackle and two defensive ends. Some teams use a 4-3, with two defensive ends and two defensive tackles. But those defensive ends are not the same. In the Steelers' base defense, the ends play directly over or just inside the tackle, while ends in a 4-3 play well outside, sometimes even outside the tight ends. That makes 4-3 defensive ends more similar to Pittsburgh outside linebackers. Instead of vague descriptions like end and tackle, NFL teams have a system to break down each possible defensive line alignment, starting with a zero technique, which is a true nose tackle over the center, and moving outward from there. So when the Steelers are looking at defensive lineman, what do we mean when we saw three-technique or five-technique? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Today, it's whether the team can or will put all of its eggs in the 2026 NFL Draft quarterback basket. The 2026 NFL Draft quarterback class is expected to be a very strong one, led by players like Texas' Arch Manning, Penn State's Drew Allar and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier. But as shown over the weekend, what looks like it will happen next year does not always come to pass. Nico Iamaleava was expected to be in that list before he departed Tennessee amid an NIL dispute over the weekend. Will he still be? It's possible but far from certain at this point. Even if the Steelers are able to trade up into the middle of a deep quarterback class, there's no guarantee they'd hit on that pick. Maybe they'd get the next Ben Roethlisberger. Maybe they'd get Phillip Rivers, his less-successful but still-good draft classmate. Maybe they'd get J.P. Losman. That's why the Steelers are still looking hard the 2025 NFL Draft class, because nothing in the future is certain, and even if they don't take a quarterback early in next week's draft, they'll probably take one at some point. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the most unbreakable NFL career record. Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin set the NHL career goal-scoring record over the weekend, surpassing the record set a generation ago by Wayne Gretzky, who was on-hand for the moment. Gretzky's record was long considered to be unbreakable in NHL circles. But what would be an unbreakable NFL career record? Unlike other sports, football doesn't care much about stomping all over its record books, expanding the season from 12 games to 14, 16, 17, someday soon 18 and probably eventually 20. So what is an NFL record that looks like it's going to pass the test of time? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today, it's the team's persistent interest in the safety position in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Steelers have shown a surprising interest in safeties in the 2025 NFL Draft cycle, using their combine formal interviews on a couple, sending head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan to the pro days of several more, and even sending defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander to work out potential first-round pick Nick Emmanwori. They did all of that despite a full depth chart at the position for the 2025 season, and All-Pro free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick locked up through the end of 2026. So what gives? Alan breaks it down. Today, it's the changes to the NFL schedule and television landscape that have impacted the team and its fans. The NFL is moving to make more and more of its schedule standalone, opening new windows in recent years early on Sundays with games in Europe, on Black Friday and now on Christmas, where it appears there will be at least an annual doubleheader, and this year, there will be three games. Most of those moves are made with the idea of growing both the domestic and television audiences of the league -- a primary driver of revenue. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the continuing indecision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers about his future. Rodgers is basically down to one option: the Steelers. The Minnesota Vikings don't have the opportunity for him to be a full-time starting quarterback without looking over his shoulder at first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. The New York Giants have filled their room by signing Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson. The Cleveland Browns don't have the cap space. But that doesn't mean that Rodgers doesn't have options. He could simply choose to retire. He could also wait until the summer, when someone else will certainly have a quarterback injury and he could take over in that city -- while also getting to skip OTAs and minicamp. So Rodgers is deciding, and the Steelers are waiting. Does it matter? Are the Steelers being harmed in any way by waiting for him to decide? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices.
