On the Tuesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey and insider Ray Fittipaldo sort through blame for the Steelers' defensive struggles through the first two games of 2025. Are coach Mike Tomlin and position assistant Karl Dunbar most to blame for the defensive line's ineffectiveness, particularly against the run? Or do Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, Isaiahh Loudermilk and Yahya Black need to step up amid the injury to Derrick Harmon? Our duo tackles those questions and more defensive issues. Are defenses picking on Jalen Ramsey? And should fans be worried about T.J. Watt's lack of stats? The guys also ponder some offensive topics. Are Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu in an early-season slump? Or are the experiencing something worse? What should Tomlin do with Kaleb Johnson after his enormous kickoff gaffe? And does Arthur Smith's distribution of carries for Kenneth Gainwell and Jaylen Warren make any sense? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo react to coach Mike Tomlin's weekly news conference at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex ahead of an NFL Week 3 matchup with the New England Patriots. They give their thoughts on Kaleb Johnson losing his role as a kickoff returner after his major gaffe against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2; Johnson's future in a backfield that Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell have dominated so far; Tomlin's belief that the run defense improved in Week 2 despite the Seahawks' Kenneth Walker III having a huge day; the offensive line struggles of tackles Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu; and Tomlin's late-game fourth-down decision that proved costly. Live around 5 p.m., Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise offers his thoughts on the struggles of the Steelers defense through the first two weeks of the NFL season. Specifically, he ponders the concern level regarding T.J. Watt not having a sack yet in 2025. Can the Steelers' defense be its best if he isn't making disruptive plays? How much have the defensive line's struggles in the absence of Derrick Harmon hindered him? Do Keeanu Benton, Cam Heyward, Yahya Black and others need to step things up for Watt to be the best version of himself? How much will the Alex Highsmith injury potentially hurt Watt by allowing defenses to focus on stopping him more? And can Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer step up enough to fill that void for coach Mike Tomlin's defense? Paul tackles those questions and the latest headlines from Tomlin's weekly news conference. Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss what Mike Tomlin had to say following the team's home opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks. We also got injury updates on Deshon Elliott, Derrick Harmon and Joey Porter Jr. Will we see more of Jabrill Peppers? Will new WR Isaiah Hodgins see the field? The Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, and Jarrett Bailey says the blame is on Mike Tomlin and his overpaid, overrated defense. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Editor's note: We apologize for audio syncing issues with this episode. On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Ray Fittipaldo and Christopher Carter sort through the NFL Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. What's behind the inconsistency coach Mike Tomlin's defense has shown through two games? Particularly against Sam Darnold, Kenneth Walker III and Jaxson Smith-Njigba on Sunday? Why are key players like Jalen Ramsey, Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson and others simply losing one-on-one matchups? And will the woes require a change in scheme from DC Teryl Austin if they continue? Our duo tackles those questions, plus a frustrating day for the offense. How much is QB Aaron Rodgers to blame of the lack and scoring? And how much criticism do Broderick Jones, Troy Fautanu, Zach Frazier and the offensive line deserve for failing to give Rodgers the time to distribute the ball to targets including DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith and Roman Wilson? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the continued abuse being taken by 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was hit seven times in the season opener against the New York Jets, with head coach Mike Tomlin saying that was too many. Left tackle Broderick Jones played a much better game in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, but Rodgers was hit even more. So what needs to change? Alan breaks it down. We hear from Steelers fans on the loss. The Steelers offensive line significantly struggled. Troy Fautanu graded by PFF as a 50 overall. Mike Tomlin said he punted on 4th and 1 near midfield to get the defense on a long field and help them. We think helping them would be keeping them off the field and the offense converts.
Hour 2 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Sam Darnold played well, JJ McCarthy played pretty bad. Mike Tomlin said he punted on 4th and 1 near midfield to get the defense on a long field and help them. Aaron Rodgers is not panicking and thinks there is time to fix issues. Is the defense REALLY this bad? Joe thinks there should be more talk about if Seattle had possession of the live ball in the end zone.
Steelers' head coach Mike Tomlin explained during his post-game press conference why he decided to punt on forth and medium late in Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Do you agree with his reasoning? Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson react.
Mike Tomlin said that the Steelers defense is capable of “much better than that”. The Steelers let Brian Flores walk, which seems to be a mistake. Sam Darnold is historically very bad under pressure, and the Steelers refused to send any. Nick Herbig actually played one more snap than TJ Watt did.
Aaron Rodgers said that it is only week 2 and everybody should relax. Poni mentions that Rodgers was great in week one, but the offense as a whole really was not. The Seahawks did a good job taking DK Metcalf out of the game yesterday. Mullsy does not think that Mike Tomlin will win another playoff game with the Steelers.
Kaleb Johnson with an all-time gaffe yesterday could have been the turning point in the game. How much of it was his fault? The guys got into the coaching of Danny Smith and if he deserves some blame for why the guy is out there to begin with. We joked about the Steelers goofy history of kick returners in the Mike Tomlin era. The guys wondered how much we will see this guy touch the ball going forward after yesterday.
Patrick Queen didn't really answer questions postgame. The Steelers will likely play Carson Wentz in Ireland, as opposed to JJ McCarthy, due to McCarthy's injury. Callers voice their opinions on yesterday's game. PIT-SEA Game Balls. Game ball number 3 goes to Byron Murphy II for his constant pressure and his TFL. Game ball number 2 goes to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who had over 100 yards. Game ball number 1 goes to Kenneth Walker, who averaged over 8 yards per carry.

The Seahawks did a good job taking DK Metcalf out of the game yesterday. Mullsy does not think that Mike Tomlin will win another playoff game with the Steelers. The Steelers gave up a touchdown run on 3rd and goal from the 19 yesterday. Poni thinks that Walker wasn't even touched on this play. Callers talk about the game. Donny Football Debrief – WVU beat Pitt in Morgantown to close out this edition of the Backyard Brawl. Pat Narduzzi is lucky that the Steelers lost, so that nobody talks about the brawl. The guys expected Pitt to win, but thought it would be close.

Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo recap an NFL Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the home opener at Acrisure Stadium. They sort through the defense's many issues in slowing down QB Sam Darnold, RB Kenneth Walker III and receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigba. Is it time to worry about coach Mike Tomlin's high-priced unit that includes names like Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and Jalen Ramsey? Are injuries to names like Joey Porter Jr., DeShon Elliott and Alex Highsmith the bigger issues? And can DC Teryl Austin find solutions sooner than later? Our guys tackle those questions; a tepid performance, at best, from QB Aaron Rodgers, WR DK Metcalf and RB Jaylen Warren; and a costly gaffe by rookie RB Kaleb Johnson on a kickoff that contributed mightily to the defeat.
