Pack the car! Route 66 turns 100 this year, and the Mother Road is still one weird and wild ride. We're hitting the highway from the California border to the New Mexico high desert, where we'll encounter the feral donkeys who rule the streets of a gold rush boomtown, visit an abandoned zoo with a body count, and climb a 2,000-year-old pueblo with a hidden staircase that outsmarted the Spanish conquistadors. Along the way, journalist and adventurer Will Grant introduces us to the people who populate this legendary road: a Hualapai elder who remembers the highway's golden age, the determined shopkeeper who fought to preserve her town's iconic neon glow, and a young Diné man who grew up at his family's trading post. Together, they share what the centenarian route means to the communities that depend on it—and tap into the powerful hold it still has on the nation's imagination. Whether you long for an epic Western roadtrip or you're just here for the vintage kitsch, this episode will have you reaching for the keys. Where Route 66 takes us: Oatman, Arizona: Stop to cuddle the adorable baby burrows in this old mining town. Kingman, Arizona: Home to the Arizona Route 66 Museum, where Model T's roll in from Chicago and tourists arrive from around the globe. Peach Springs, Arizona: The heart of the Hualapai Nation, where the tribal market is the unofficial town square. Williams, Arizona: Vintage neon signs dot one of the most authentic main streets on the route. Two Guns, Arizona: An abandoned zoo where the murderous owner was mauled by his own mountain lions. Winslow, Arizona: The sandstone canyon where Easy Rider and The Grapes of Wrath were filmed, plus a classic Diné trading post. Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico: Dubbed Sky City, this mesa-top village is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the U.S. Guest: Will Grant Born and raised in Colorado, Will Grant brings a cowboy-philosopher's eye to the landscapes, characters, and histories that make the West unlike anywhere else on earth. After college, he worked as a cowboy and a horse trainer in Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas, where he apprenticed under the legendary horseman Jack Brainard. In 2008, he pivoted to a career in journalism, but he continues to seek out ways to combine horses and storytelling. His 2023 book, The Last Ride of the Pony Express, recounts his 2,000-mile journey along the famed mail route with his horses Chicken Fry and Badger. Other adventures include a 600-mile horse race across Mongolia, an expedition to find gold in Arizona, and two trips to Kyrgyzstan to play kok boru, the most dangerous horseback game on the planet. For Via, Will traded his saddle for a steering wheel to investigate some of the most storied—and strangest—stretches of Route 66. His writing has also appeared in Outside magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Wall Street Journal, and regional publications throughout the West. Will currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his partner, Claire Antoszewski, and two dogs, three chickens, and five horses. Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.

Do you follow God because He's worthy of worship, or because of what He can give you? Brian From lands on that question after a Sunday sermon about Eli and Samuel — and it sticks. Is God a vending machine, a cosmic Santa Claus, or the one who is worthy of praise even when circumstances are bad? That's the challenge at the heart of this hour. First though: Memorial Day reflections on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's costly grace and what it actually means to be called to "come and die" — a word that cuts against a culture obsessed with comfort. A poignant piece called "Judson's Last Ride," a father's reflection on his autistic son's last school bus ride, and what every parent faces when their kids move into a new season. A study on pro chess players that becomes a personal confession about paralysis by analysis. The agonizing .02-second finish at the Indy 500 and what it means to get back in the car. Why youth group attendance is down and what youth ministers can actually do about it. Gas at $4.74 feeling like a victory. And a summer charge: be intentional, or it will pass you by before you know it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Planet Terror (2007) Directed by Robert Rodriguez Starring: Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodriguez, Josh Brolin, Jeff FaheyIf you haven't seen Planet Terror yet, Sean has a message for you: turn this podcast off right now and go watch it. We'll wait. This week on Dewey Pod Monster, we're diving deep into Robert Rodriguez's gloriously unhinged 2007 grindhouse masterpiece — a movie about zombie mutants, a go-go dancer with a machine gun for a leg, and somehow the best barbecue scene ever committed to film. John has seen this thing approximately 15 times in a theater (yes, really), and Sean just watched it for the first time and immediately felt like an idiot for waiting this long. The result is one of the most enthusiastic, borderline unhinged episode we've recorded. In this episode, we discuss:Go-Go, Not Stripper — The level of detail Rodriguez packed into this movie is insane, and John will correct you on the terminology. We break down why Planet Terror works as both a loving grindhouse homage AND as a legitimately great horror-comedy, and why so many modern movies fail to pull off what this one does effortlessly.Jeff Fahey Tastes His Own Blood and Gives Zero F*s — We make the case that Jeff Fahey is the unsung MVP of this film and the entire Rodriguez universe. The man is covered in wounds, tasting his own blood dripping into his barbecue sauce, and somehow STILL delivering the performance of a lifetime. He deserved an award. He got nothing. We're still mad.The Kid Shoots Himself and We Laughed. Sorry. — Rodriguez had the absolute audacity to telegraph exactly what was going to happen and then do it anyway, and somehow it's one of the funniest moments in the movie. We discuss why it works, why we're both going to hell, and why the movie is smart enough not to dwell on it.The Missing Reel is Cinema — The sex scene that cuts to everything being on fire is a stroke of genius, and we get into why Rodriguez's use of fake film damage and missing reels is more than just a gimmick — it's the best scene transition in the whole damn movie. We Also Talked About:At the Video Store (2019) (Amazon) — A nostalgic documentary about the death of video store culture featuring John Waters, Bill Hader, Gus Van Sant, and Todd Haynes. Sean's watched a suspicious number of these. The Last Ride (1991) (Tubi) — An AIP gem where a crazed truck driver terrorizes a recently released ex-con. Everyone is dubbed. The best line involves a shit pot. It's incredible.Massacre in Dinosaur Valley (1985) (Tubi) — An Italian jungle adventure featuring an alligator that genuinely does not want to be in this movie. The quicksand looks like oatmeal. John watched it before a Tigers game.Against the Dark (2009) (Tubi) — Steven Seagal in a trench coat "fighting" vampire zombies. Keith David shows up to collect a check. John stayed awake for all 90 minutes and regrets nothing and everything.Untold: The Jail Blazers (Netflix) — The chaotic story of the early 2000s Portland Trail Blazers. John doesn't really follow basketball but watched the whole thing. It's an easy hour. Some of the above links are affiliate links — if you purchase through them we get a small kickback, and it's the best way to support the show.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. JT also breaks down why the New England Patriots' tougher schedule could reveal their real ceiling after a Super Bowl run, how A.J. They recap QB Aaron Rodgers' news conference in which he explained his decision to return, crediting conversations with GM Omar Khan and coach Mike McCarthy as well as significant additions to the roster. Rico Dowdle, Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard are among the names joining established Steelers Pat Freiermuth, DK Metcalf and Jaylen Warren. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has stuck to a steady, mostly predictable formula this offseason: add depth to appropriate places via pragmatic, sensible signings. Whether his strategy stays the same moving forward remains unclear. Just last week, Roseman dipped his toes into a growing NFL trade market, and with the draft weeks away, along with the flurry of transactions that typically comes with it, perhaps he'll find opportunities to mix up his approach. This storyline is one of several The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane plans to follow during the league's annual meeting at the end of the month. It's a jam-packed show this week on BEHIND THE LENS with two fantastic films and two equally fantastic filmmakers, both of whom are enthusiastic, energetic, and excited about filmmaking. You'll be hearing from writer/director CINQUE LEE in the second half of the show, talking about his new film, the survival thriller LAST RIDE. But first up is my exclusive interview with writer/director NASTASYA POPOV, going in-depth about her narrative feature directorial film, the oh-so-funny fashion and family comedy IDIOTKA. In this sharp, irreverent comedy, a disgraced fashion designer with a dangerously low credit score, Margarita, enters a reality show (a la Project Runway) with a six-figure cash prize that would save her babushka's West Hollywood apartment. But as the competition intensifies, the show's slick producer Nicol pushes her to spin her family's struggle into spectacle, forcing Margarita to decide whether to play along or take control of her own narrative, one unhinged look at a time. Written and directed by Nastasya Popov, IDIOTKA stars Anna Baryshnikov, Camila Mendes, Julia Fox, Benito Skinner, Saweetie, Owen Thiele, Galina Jovovich, Mark Ivanir, Nerses Stamos, and Ilia Volok. Now we go from the fun of comedy to the fear, tension, and friendship that we find in the survival thriller LAST RIDE from writer/director CINQUE LEE. LAST RIDE is set in the winter of 1982, where three 12-year-old American boys find themselves stranded in a cable car with a dead body, suspended midair in the mountains of Norway during a rare celestial planetary alignment. Ironically, we just had a 6-planet planetary alignment on Saturday night. Written and directed by CINQUE LEE (and yes, he is Spike's brother), LAST RIDE stars Roman Griffin Davis (JO JO RABBIT, THE LONG WALK, GREENLAND 2), Felix Jamieson (GAME OF THRONES), Charlie Price (THE GREAT), and Kristofer Hivju. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Season Endings and Real-World Goodbyes This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl break down the Season 1 finale of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, reflect on the season as a whole, and celebrate the life and career of actor Robert Carradine. Did the finale land the joust, or did it pull up short at the lists? And where does this first season rank among HBO's growing Westerosi saga? Plus, we say goodbye to a certified nerd icon. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 News Bites – Robert Carradine: 5:30 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Season 1 Finale Review: 13:47 Season 1 Retrospective: 40:12 Final Thoughts: 46:52 News Bites Robert Carradine (1954–2026) Robert Carradine, best known for his role as Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds, has passed away. Carradine was part of the legendary Carradine acting family, son of John Carradine and brother to David and Keith Carradine. While he built a long résumé in film and television, he became a generational touchstone for playing the underdog genius in the 1984 cult classic Revenge of the Nerds and its sequels. Beyond that franchise, Carradine appeared in projects such as The Long Riders, Lizzie McGuire, King of the Nerds, and numerous television roles across decades. He embodied a very specific cinematic archetype: the smart outsider who eventually wins. For an entire era of fandom, he helped make “nerd” aspirational. We tip the pocket protector in respect. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Season 1 Finale Episode Title: ‘The Morrow’ Director: Sarah Adina Smith Writer: Ira Parker & Ti Mikkel Network: HBO The Season 1 finale brings Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg's first major Westerosi chapter to a close. Lyonel invites Dunk to move to Storm’s End, but Dunk believes that he brings only bad luck. Baelor’s body is cremated at his funeral. Dunk finds Valarr, who questions why his father died, but Dunk was left alive. Raymun reveals he has married the prostitute Rowan, alias Red. Maekar informs Dunk that Aerion will spend time in the Free Cities to atone. He laments that Baelor would have been a good king and invites Dunk to Summerhall, where Egg can be his squire; Dunk declines, which Egg overhears. In a flashback, Dunk asks Arlan why he was never knighted. Arlan retorts that a true knight always finishes a story. In the present, Daeron tells Dunk to mentor Egg to prevent him from becoming like Aerion. Egg discovers that his hair is regrowing. He takes a knife to Aerion’s bedroom, but Maekar calms him down. Dunk asks Maekar if Egg can squire for him on the road, but Maekar refuses. Raymun buys Sweetfoot back for Dunk, who then gifts her to Raymun. As Dunk leaves Ashford, Egg arrives, and they depart together. Egg suggests that they travel to Dorne. An angry Maekar later realizes that Egg is gone. Key themes explored: – Honor vs. ambition – The weight of legacy – The quiet tension of noble politics – The personal cost of knighthood – Nature vs. Nurture The episode leans more on moral consequence than explosive set pieces, reinforcing the show's identity as a smaller-scale, character-first entry in the Game of Thrones universe. Brian & Darryl Discuss: – Did the finale feel satisfying or intentionally restrained? – Was the pacing consistent with the season's slower, novelistic approach? – Standout performances – Production design and tonal consistency – How does this set up future seasons Rating out of 5 When the Laughing Storm Offers You War, You Say Yes Brian: 4.88/5 Darryl: 4.6/5 Season 1 Retrospective Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms carved out its own lane in Westeros by shrinking the scope and focusing on intimacy over spectacle. Season strengths: – Character chemistry between Dunk and Egg – Political nuance without overwhelming lore – Strong costume and set authenticity – A grounded tone closer to early Game of Thrones Rating out of 10, Wow, That Hedge Knight has a HUGE “Sword” Brian: 9.17/10 Darryl: 9.5/10 Question of the Week What would you do if you were invisible for a day? Even Trump likes him just fine...but that may not be enough to save him in Texas, because he may have just been too mild-mannered for too long. Sometimes a spark is all you need. A twinkle in a tavern window, a reminder that even in a world where the shadows threaten to flood, light can still be found. And when talk turns to chance, it becomes easy to wonder what might happen if you are willing to take the risk. Even if you only have a 10% chance of succeeding, sometimes it is more about the adventure you have along the way.Yet certainty can still feel fragile. A weight too heavy, whispers too sharp, and a hand that refuses to loosen its grip no matter the ask. Strength can feel simple until it is questioned, and harder still when you cannot tell who you need to defend it from. When the time comes, the world might demand a choice. And when life sets two paths in front of you, it can feel like a race to the top. In those moments when you are searching for joy, it's a test of whether you have the strength to climb and the ability to hold on. And while the ride might be bumpy, the corners sharp, and sometimes even a little greasy underfoot, when you make it to the finish line, a little extra movement can go a long way.Natural Six are Harry McEntire, Doug Cockle, Ben Starr, Hollie Bennett, Alex Jordan, and Aoife Wilson.Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/naturalsixJoin our Discord! https://discord.gg/HNV56DADnJFollow us on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/naturalsixFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/natural_sixFollow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@natural.sixLove lore? On the Saturday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Brian Batko preview the team's crucial Week 18 matchup vs. the Baltimore Ravens. Could this be the last ride for legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers? Or is there a chance he comes back to play another season? If he does, do we expect that to be with the Steelers? What improvements can he make over last week's debacle against the Cleveland Browns? How much will another DK Metcalf absence affect the Steelers offense? Christopher and Brian also break down some keys to the game. Is there anything more important Sunday night than stopping Ravens running back Derrick Henry? How does the complexion of the game change with Lamar Jackson back in at quarterback instead of Tyler Huntley? And how much is that game plan affected by whether T.J. Watt will play? Our duo tackles those topics and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

It was supposed to be an ordinary pickup after a late-night shoot — a quiet November drive back to the city. Instead, she stood alone on the shoulder of a rural two-lane road, hugging her jacket against the cold and listening to the restless wind comb through the grass. The stars above felt distant, the darkness too close. Her driver, Sarah, was late. Sarah was young, full of laughter and reckless with speed — the kind of driver who loved the gas pedal a little too much. By 2:30 a.m., there was still no sign of her headlights. Then came the sound: the screech of tires on loose gravel, a hard swerve, the hollow boom of a car striking something massive… followed by silence. When she went to look, there was no wreckage. No dust, no headlights, just an empty road under the stars. This is the story of a late-night roadside encounter with a friend whose car never arrived — a glimpse of the newly dead still trying to understand what had happened on that curve in the road. Some hauntings don't linger in houses or objects. They appear in the dark stretches between towns, in the moments when life and death collide, and sometimes — just for a breath — they ask the living for directions home. #TrueGhostStory #RoadsideHaunting #ParanormalEncounter #RealHaunting #GlowingApparition #UnexplainedPhenomena #TragicAccident #SpiritSightings #HauntedHighway #TerrifyingTrueStory Love real ghost stories? In 1854, London built a railway with first-class tickets for corpses, separate carriages for different religions, and trains that carried thousands of bodies out of the overcrowded city for nearly a century.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE for the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: Deep in the bowels of London is a railway built to serve not the living citizens of the city above… but of the dead below. (Railway of the Dead) *** Sometimes they are kind towards humans, even assisting them if in distress, or giving gifts. But some consider them lustful and evil, and still others claim they are the risen dead of brutally killed women. And there are reports of them being seen even today. We'll look at the history and lore of mermaids. (Mythical Mermaids) *** For years, Country singer Johnny Horton told friends of a premonition he couldn't shake. A premonition of his own death. Not just THAT he would be killed… but HOW. And he was eerily accurate. And that wasn't the end of his tragic story. (The Last Ride of Johnny Horton) *** Camping can be an amazing experience, especially when with friends or family. But even surrounded by those you love, when it gets dark, the wilderness gets creepy. Was that just an animal in the woods you heard, or something more? Was that blur you just saw a trick of the light or is there really something circling your campsite? I'll share some true stories of campers who experienced much more than what they bargained for.
