Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. Should the Steelers really be looking at Kirk Cousins as a Plan B to Aaron Rodgers, as reporting from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler suggests? Would the veteran quarterback's production be worth his hefty price tag for general manager Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin? Or are they better off looking internally at options like Mason Rudolph and Will Howard? And what other storylines is Paul monitoring at Steelers OTAs, from the new-look receivers room with DK Metcalf and Robert Woods joining Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III to the battle at tackle highlighting Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu? Paul tackles those topics, then recaps a busy weekend for the Pirates against the Milwaukee Brewers and the start of their West Coast road trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Were they right to make their move for DK Metcalf instead? And how much confidence should we have in the current receivers room that includes names like Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson? Are they set up for another December letdown? We give some of our way-too-early predictions to open up the show. For the next topic, we talk about the George Pickens trade that happened last week and whether or not we like the trade value in return. We also talk about the current WR room and if we are buying what Omar Khan was selling about the 2025 situation being way different. How large of a role will Calvin Austin III play and could the Steelers look to extend him this offseason? For the third topic, we push back on some comments made by Ryan Clark on ESPN about Mike Tomlin's message going stale and how he should leave the team. Is Khan sending more smokescreens with an eye toward free agents like Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper? Our duo tackles those questions and more from rookie camp. What should we make of Will Howard's impressive practice performance? Can he push Mason Rudolph and possibly Aaron Rodgers come training camp? Or be a starter for this team in the future? NFL draft: Steelers' Omar Khan, Mike Tomlin MUST keep long-term goals in mind?

On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo ponder the importance of the 2025 NFL draft to the franchise's long-term future. Why is it essential for GM Omar Khan, assistant GM Andy Weidl and coach Mike Tomlin to properly balance short-term needs with the potential to add long-term staples? How does that balance fit into the conversations around names including DLs Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant and Walter Nolen; QBs Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart; RBs Omarion Hampton and Dylan Sampson; and defensive backs like Jahdae Barron? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks QBs. How did the franchise get here? With only Mason Rudolph as their only viable option under contract? Should they have taken more NFL draft chances on QBs following Ben Roethlisberger's retirement? Or even before it? Or were they correct to take the chances they did with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson last season. Or potentially Aaron Rodgers in 2025? Then in the third segment, the guys ponder lessons from former GM Kevin Colbert's early successes and his late failures that contributed to the current state of today's roster.

Ray said we will hear from Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan ahead of the draft, so the questions can be there on Rodgers. Poni asked Ray why the Steelers are hitching their wagons to this guy. Ray doesn't think the latest on Rodgers impacts their draft plan much at all. Ray doesn't think Poni's draft plan would come to fruition if the team drafts a mid-round QB. Ray is still looking at DL as we sit one week away from the NFL Draft. Ray told us to be prepared for the 1st round pick to not start. Ray struggled to commit on Rodgers being the Steelers QB1 in Week 1.

On their weekly Steelers NFL mock draft tracker video, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette Steelers insider Brian Batko react to the week in projected picks for the team from around the Internet. -Does GM Omar Khan's heavy focus on QBs like Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart in top 30 visits signal a preference to target that position over defensive line and names like Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant, Walter Nolen and others? Or should we not read too far into the players coach Mike Tomlin is seeing up close? -What does it mean for defensive line scouting that Harmon has visited the team but names such as Nolen, Grant, Darius Alexander and Alfred Collins have not? -Should we give Kyle McCord and his prodigious stats at Syracuse a longer look as a later-round QB option? -Is Emeka Egbuka underrated as a complement to George Pickens and DK Metcalf? -How closely should we be watching defensive linemen projected for later rounds? Names like Ty Robinson and JJ Pegues? -Is Bhayshul Tuten the home run hitter this backfield needs next to Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell? Or should the Steelers being looking more at power backs like Omarion Hampton, Kaleb Johnson or Devin Neal? -Do defensive backs like Maxwell Hairston and Denzel Burke make any sense?

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's whether the Steelers could or would trade up for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. We're talked a lot about Steelers general manager Omar Khan hoarding compensatory draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and with that selection taking place in Pittsburgh, and a strong class of quarterbacks expected, trading up then is a very attractive option for the Steelers. But what about using those comp picks to move up in the 2025 NFL Draft for a player like Shedeur Sanders? While possible, that idea comes with some pitfalls. Alan breaks it down. Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. Did Steelers GM Omar Khan back himself into a corner by not addressing the defensive line in a major way in free agency? Forcing a possible tough choice between QBs like Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart and DLs like Kenneth Grant, Derrick Harmon and Walter Nolen in the NFL draft? Are negotiations between the Steelers and star pass rusher T.J. Watt going poorly? As NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport suggested Thursday following the release of a cryptic Instagram post from Watt? Or are fans and media getting ahead of themselves in reacting to the innocuous photo of Watt flashing a peace sign? Is giving Watt and extension the right move, given his personal lack of playoff success? And how long can he, Cam Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick realistically be cornerstones of Mike Tomlin's defense as they have been for much of the last decade? Paul tackles those questions, Sanders' visit to the team's facility ahead of the NFL draft and the Pirates' series victory against the St. Louis Cardinals. Does it suggest a turnaround could be ahead for Paul Skenes, Bryan Reynolds, Andrew McCutchen, etc.? Or are the obvious offensive woes still a major concern?

Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the idea that the team and T.J. Watt are at some kind of a contract impasse. Watt ramped up speculation that something might be amiss with a cryptic Instagram post on Wednesday. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said on Thursday that could mean things aren't going well in negotiations between the team and Watt on a long-term contact extension. Watt is entering the final season of his contract, and with Myles Garrett re-setting the edge rusher market at $40 million per year, he is likely due for a significant raise. But general manager Omar Khan said he is hopeful the Steelers will be able to sign Watt to an extension. Could there really be trouble brewing? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the team's persistent interest in the safety position in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Steelers have shown a surprising interest in safeties in the 2025 NFL Draft cycle, using their combine formal interviews on a couple, sending head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan to the pro days of several more, and even sending defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander to work out potential first-round pick Nick Emmanwori. They did all of that despite a full depth chart at the position for the 2025 season, and All-Pro free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick locked up through the end of 2026. So what gives? Alan breaks it down.
