Neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer is an expert on sleep – or, more accurately, an expert on why so many can't sleep. He notes that, ironically, it's often anxiety about sleep that prevents good sleep. In short, we lose sleep over lost sleep. Wearables and other tools can help but only to a point, and medications do not induce natural sleep. Instead, he counsels consistent routines, less stimulation at bedtime, and cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce worry about insomnia. Unfortunately, you can't work harder to get better sleep – you have to learn to relax, Zeitzer tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? Send it our way in writing or via voice memo, and it might be featured on an upcoming episode. Please introduce yourself, let us know where you're listening from, and share your question. Tune in for the final full episode of Season 11 of the Case Closed podcast, where we're serializing the audiobook edition of The Night Shift by Alex Finlay. It's New Year's Eve 1999. Y2K is expected to end in chaos: planes falling from the sky, elevators plunging to earth, world markets collapsing. A digital apocalypse. None of that happens. But at a Blockbuster Video in New Jersey, four teenagers working late at the store are attacked. Only one inexplicably survives. Police quickly identify a suspect, the boyfriend of one of the victims, who flees and is never seen again. Fifteen years later, more teenage employees are attacked at an ice cream store in the same town, and again only one makes it out alive. In the aftermath of the latest crime, three lives intersect: the lone survivor of the Blockbuster massacre who's forced to relive the horrors of her tragedy; the brother of the fugitive accused, who's convinced the police have the wrong suspect; and FBI agent Sarah Keller who must delve into the secrets of both nights—stirring up memories of teen love and lies—to uncover the truth about murders on the night shift. Twisty, poignant, and redemptive, The Night Shift is a story about the legacy of trauma and how the broken can come out on the other side, and it solidifies Finlay as one of the new leading voices in the world of thrillers. We'll release two new episodes every week beginning April 10th! Make sure to subscribe to Case Closed to get notified each week as episodes drop. We don't want you to miss anything. Listen to today's podcast... “Night shift can kill the body.” Today is the day that we celebrate National Night-Shift Worker Day and the introduction of the 24-hour society. One repercussion of the nightshift work schedule is that a typical night shift worker sleeps one or two hours less per day than a day worker and often has less deep and REM sleep. Shift Work Maladaption Syndrome is where shift work is leaving the worker so sleepy that they fear for their safety on the job. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency! Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Ensuring Resilience In Our Night-Shift Workers: As a leader, it is important to educate employees on what shift work entails and provide annual screening for shift-related illnesses. Promote and educate on healthy lifestyle strategies. Organize mandatory stretch breaks especially during the dangerous hours. As a Night Shift-Worker: Understand the hazards and consequences of shift work. Pay attention to sleep strategies and avoid going into sleep debt. Shift work is a lifestyle and in order to minimize stress and build resiliency, the worker and their family must ensure that they follow a healthy schedule, focus on their sleep strategies, and ensure that they have support from those around them. What goes bump in the night giving Kyle a fright? This week it's The Night Shift/Ghost Mansion (2021) directed by Jo Ba-Reun. This Korean anthology film explores various haunted occurrences within a rundown apartment complex. How many movies share this title? What advice does Chris have when it comes to buying a sex doll? What webtoon is Mat obsessed with? Try not to eat any mold as the Boo Boys break it all down.

Send us a message (& include the best way to reach you)What happens when your work schedule runs opposite to the natural rhythms of the world? In this illuminating conversation, Laura Timbrook—international speaker, board-certified health coach, and the definitive expert in shift worker wellness—reveals the hidden health challenges facing those who work outside traditional hours and provides actionable solutions that actually work.Laura draws from over a decade of experience transforming how businesses approach health for shift workers, sharing why conventional wellness advice often fails those working nights or rotating schedules. The digestive system functions differently at 2 AM versus 2 PM, even for veteran night shift workers. Sleep patterns, nutrition needs, and exercise requirements all demand specialized approaches that acknowledge biological realities. Most alarming is the World Health Organization's classification of shift work as a "probable carcinogen," with research showing shift workers face a 60% higher risk of diabetes and consistently get 2-4 fewer hours of sleep than day workers. Yet Laura emphasizes that health optimization remains possible through targeted strategies and mindset shifts. The conversation tackles common misconceptions about shift work health, explores practical solutions like two-meal eating patterns versus three traditional meals, and discusses how both organizations and individuals can mitigate health risks. For rotating shift workers facing constantly changing schedules, Laura reveals techniques to find patterns within chaos and establish health routines that actually stick.Whether you're navigating shift work yourself, supporting team members with unconventional schedules, or simply interested in understanding how circadian disruption affects health, this episode provides eye-opening insights and practical tools to protect wellbeing when working against the clock. Be sure to listen or download by May 22nd so you can hear the whole story. Can't wait until next week? You can find The Night Shift wherever audiobooks are sold.
