On the Tuesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel, host Noah Hiles welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to analyze the impact Mike McCarthy's hiring to replace Mike Tomlin as coach could have on the offense. Could he get more from players including DK Metcalf, Pat Freiermuth, Roman Wilson, Darnell Washington, Jaylen Warren and others under contract for 2026? Was that a point of emphasis for owner Art Rooney II and GM Omar Khan in making this move? And what will that mean for the QB situation with Aaron Rodgers' future uncertain ahead of names like Mason Rudolph and Will Howard? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponder what McCarthy could be looking for in an offensive coordinator. Will it be another established name like Arthur Smith, who's now off to Ohio State? Or could he lean on a younger name from his own coaching tree? With Scott Tolzien being one notable option from that list? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo react to the introduction of Mike McCarthy as Steelers coach, replacing Mike Tomlin. They explain how McCarthy showed his love for his hometown; his belief in the existing defensive scheme that dates to Bill Cowher and has produced standouts from Levon Kirkland to T.J. Watt; his kind words for QBs Will Howard and Aaron Rodgers; his plan to call the plays as he has throughout his career, rather than deferring to an offensive coordinator; and his belief in the running game as he ponders free agency decisions involving players from Kenneth Gainweel and Jaylen Warren to Isaac Seumalo. On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the team's decision to hire Mike McCarthy as its replacement at head coach for Mike Tomlin. Does this move finally give the franchise a fighting chance to develop a young quarterback and functional offense? With pieces in place that include names like Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jaylen Warren, Pat Freiermuth, Zach Frazier, Troy Fautanu and Mason McCormick? Can McCarthy win without a franchise QB type like Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers or Dak Prescott at the helm? Could he develop Will Howard or an NFL draft rookie like Ty Simpson, Drew Allar, Cade Klubnik or Garrett Nussmeier? Or could he foster a career renaissance like we've seen Sam Darnold enjoy for another veteran QB like Malik Willis? Our duo tackles those questions and more now that owner Art Rooney II and GM Omar Khan have chosen McCarthy over names like Chris Shula, Nate Scheelhaase, Anthony Weaver and Brian Flores. Host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise to react to news that the Steelers are hiring Mike McCarthy as coach to replace Mike Tomlin. This show is presented by FanDuel. Were owner Art Rooney II and GM Omar Khan right to go with the veteran coach, who won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers before a stint with the Dallas Cowboys? Should they have waited for younger candidates on their reported list that included Chris Shula and Nate Scheelhaase of the NFC championship-bound Los Angeles Rams? Or Anthony Weaver of the Houston Texans? What role did McCarthy's hometown ties play into the decision? What might we expect his staff choices to be? And how will the hiring be greeted by the roster led by Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jaylen Warren, T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Jalen Ramsey and more? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise gives his thoughts on the attractiveness of the Steelers' coaching job following the departure of Mike Tomlin. Will owner Art Rooney II and GM Omar Khan have an easy time attracting top candidates because of the loyalty they the organization has shown to Tomlin, Bill Cowher and Chuck Noll over the years? Or will the restlessness of the fan base -- even on a successful coach like Tomlin -- dissuade some candidates from pursuing the opening? And what kind of impact will the roster have on interest levels? Do stars like T.J. Watt, Jalen Ramsey, Cam Heyward, DK Metcalf and Jaylen Warren make this team one someone can win quickly with? Or does it need more younger standouts like Joey Porter Jr., Derrick Harmon, Nick Herbig, Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick and Troy Fautanu? Paul tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac & Ray Fittipaldo recap owner Art Rooney II's news conference addressing the departure of coach Mike Tomlin. They explain that the door was open for Tomlin to return and coach his team led by names like Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt, Jalen Ramsey, Jaylen Warren, Joey Porter Jr. and DK Metcalf in 2026. They also give their thoughts on the chances GM Omar Khan could trade Tomlin with two years remaining on his contract; and the type of candidates Rooney and Khan could be looking for as they choose their next coach. What went wrong for Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Kenneth Gainwell, Jaylen Warren, Calvin Austin III, Pat Freiermuth and OC Arthur Smith's unit? Former Steelers Super Bowl champion Trai Essex joined the show. Trai says that Alex Highsmith is the player that the Steelers need to have a great game to have a chance against the Texans. He points out that Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell need to be the x-factors for the Steelers. The Texans defense is going up against a very young offensive line.

On the Wednesday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to analyze the Steelers' improvements on both the offensive and defensive lines this season. Does the season sweep of the Ravens validate GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin's years-long efforts to be tougher up front? Why was Derrick Harmon's selection so key to unlocking Keeanu Benton and Cam Heyward in stopping Baltimore running back Derrick Henry in NFL Week 18? Is the offensive line's growth underrated with Troy Fautanu, Mason McCormick and Zach Frazier playing well despite the loss of Broderick Jones? And what potential does Dylan Cook have to be a long-term contributor? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks passing game chemistry. How well will QB Aaron Rodgers continue to utilize names like Calvin Austin III, Pat Freiermuth and Adam Thielen with DK Metcalf returning? Will he be able to find running backs Kenneth Gainwell and Jaylen Warren underneath? Or will the Texans' pass rush make that difficult in the team's NFL playoffs matchup this week at Acrisure Stadium? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. On the Monday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo react the NFL Week 18 victory against the Baltimore Ravens that clinched the AFC North division and a home NFL playoffs game. Is coach Mike Tomlin's team proving its resilience in the closing weeks of the season and positioning itself as a dangerous foe for the postseason? Has Aaron Rodgers' veteran influence been evident, particularly on offense with names like Kenneth Gainwell, Calvin Austin III, Jaylen Warren, Pat Freiermuth and others? And what T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Jalen Ramsey and the defense show in overcoming three long touchdown passes from Ravens QB Lamar Jackson? Our duo tackles those questions and ponders what the return of receiver DK Metcalf could mean for Adam Thielen, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jonnu Smith and the rest of the pass catching group ahead of the wild-card playoff game against the Houston Texans next Monday night at Acrisure Stadium. On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to assess Aaron Rodgers' play at QB this year. Does he deserve the "inconsistent" label after his latest performance against the Browns? Can his personnel plausibly be blamed with DK Metcalf absent? Or did should Rodgers still have been expected to do more with Kenneth Gainwell, Jaylen Warren, Adam Thielen, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Pat Friermuth, Scotty Miller and others available as options? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks defense. How close is the unit to living up to Mike Tomlin's preseason expectations that it be "historic." What's the biggest factor in the turnaround over the past month? Is Derrick Harmon the simple answer? Or is it more complicated than that. How much credit do Tomlin and DC Teryl Austin deserve for the secondary, which has shined with an ensemble cast that includes Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr., James Pierre, Brandin Echols, Asante Samuel Jr. and Kyle Dugger? And how many offenses remain in the AFC playoff picture that could pose problems for this group? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This could be the year of Austin per Dom. What do you want to happen the rest of the way with the Steelers? The Steelers game plan was terrible. They should have run it up the middle more. The shots the team did take, did not make any sense. Tomlin said he had no issues with how Rodgers handled the last couple plays. A bunch of calls regarding the Cleveland game. Where was Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell? Was the Steelers game plan against Myles Garrett smart? More callers.

Watt's single-season sack record, at the expense of productivity. He also gives his reasons for why players including Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Adam Thielen, Pat Freiermuth, Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell had ineffective days in the absence of DK Metcalf despite the Browns entering the game with a lousy record. What went wrong for coach Mike Tomlin in his latest loss to a team with a bad record? Why was OC Arthur Smith's unit unable to overcome the absence of receiver DK Metcalf? Playoff hopes dim after chaotic ending The Detroit Lions saw their playoff hopes fade in a 29-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The finish twisted the knife. Detroit appeared to score on the final snap. The celebration died when offensive pass interference wiped it away. The call, tied to Amon-Ra St. Brown, turned a stunning comeback into an empty box score. The moment fit the day. Frustration. Confusion. Missed chances. This loss stings because it was there to take. The Steelers were banged up. The Lions did not capitalize. Detroit's offense sputtered on the ground. The defense broke late. In the NFL, that combination loses you games in December. Officiating confusion and accountability The officiating crew, led by Carl Cheffers, lost the plot in the final sequence. Communication failed on the field. Players and coaches were left guessing. Letter of the law, the offensive pass interference on St. Brown can be called. Process matters too. It did not look like the crew controlled the situation or explained it. That erodes trust. Earlier, an offensive pass interference flag on Isaac TeSlaa compounded the angst. TeSlaa was pushed by a defensive back into another defender, which triggered the foul. That nuance mattered. Detroit paid for the savvy by Pittsburgh. Calls like these underscore a bigger NFL problem. Transparency is lagging. The league needs an eye-in-the-sky voice. It needs clear, real-time explanations. With gambling tied into every broadcast, the room for opaque officiating is gone. Run game stalls, defense cracks late The Detroit Lions run game vanished. David Montgomery had four carries for 14 yards. His longest went for 17, which means the rest lost three yards. Jameer Gibbs had seven carries for two yards. His longest was six. The other six lost four yards. Jared Goff lost a yard on a designed run. That is a non-starter for a Detroit offense built on balance. It is more galling given Pittsburgh's injuries. No T.J. Watt. No Nick Herbig. Cornerbacks rotating. The Lions offensive line was makeshift, but the execution fell short. Detroit could not move bodies or sustain tracks. The Steelers defensive front won too many snaps on first down. The sticks flipped, and the playbook shrank. Defensively, Detroit blinked in the biggest moments. Two long Jaylen Warren runs in the fourth quarter tilted the field and the clock. Those gap fits must be airtight. They were not. The Lions did not play well enough to overcome that, even without the officiating swirl. Short week to Christmas kickoff An abbreviated week now looms. The Detroit Lions play again on Christmas. The locker room has to flush this and find urgency. The margin is gone. The path is narrow. What remains is pride, correction, and sharper detail. The Detroit Lions Podcast daily notes it plainly. Detroit must own the self-inflicted wounds, demand clarity from the league, and run the ball when it matters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04GqVJ-4R4s #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #amon-rast.brown #offensivepassinterference #carlcheffers #isaacteslaa #davidmontgomery #jameergibbs #jaredgoff #jaylenwarren #t.j.watt #nickherbig Learn more about your ad choices. Hour 3: Should Mike Tomlin have benched DK Metcalf yesterday? Intern Jack says Kenneth Gainwell's catch against the Lions was more impressive than the Immaculate Reception. Donny's Game Balls. A Lion received votes, and the guys try to guess who it was. Apparently Dom messed up the segment by not doing the game balls in order. There's a lot of Aaron Rodgers hate still going around.
Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss the injury updates of TJ Watt, Nick Herbig, Isaac Seumalo and James Pierre. We also discuss if there is a move to be made to help out with the team's OLB injury issues such as adding Matthew Judon. What did Alex Highsmith say about the unique challenges presented by the Detroit Lions' aggressive nature? Does it matter who is leading the snap count between Kenny Gainwell and Jaylen Warren? Let's go for another Steelers Afternoon Drive and discuss all this! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder and Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo analyze coach Mike Tomlin's recent aggressiveness on fourth downs. Why has the traditionally conservative coach been taking more chances? Is it a high degree of faith in the team's "tush push" play with Connor Heyward? Or is it a desire to get the ball in the hands of playmakers including Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell, Pat Freiermuth and others with more consistency? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders the impact of veterans Adam Thielen and Marquez Valdes-Scantling on the passing game the past couple of weeks. Are they really upgrades on names like Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson? Especially if their volume of targets hasn't been much better? Or is there mere presence opening up more opportunities for other targets? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
