She bumps into Batman who agrees the crime scene belongs to the Birds of Prey. Back at the Birds' Headquarters, Oracle attempts to go through all the evidence. The group knows this is all a trap of some sort but there needs to be several in person investigations to solve what has happened and how it relates to a stolen experimental drug. They split up. That night in Gotham, Sin and Batgirl are on a stakeout. Sin is excited and apologizes for being a lot to put up with. Batgirl reassures her. They are a lot alike, trained to be weapons, bad people always want them. However they both are different inside and it's good. Sin gives her a hug. Meanwhile, Barda drops off Dinah in Tokyo. She makes her way down from the roof into a large theater where a demonstration of a new invisibility suit is underway. Dinah is shocked at how effective it is, Oracle calls it an industry game changer. Barda has boom tubed into United Arab Emirates and a small town that appears deserted. She investigates a strange nearby skyscraper. Although it has power, it too is empty. After getting into the penthouse she hears someone from the air ducts call out to her. Back in Gotham, Sin and Bargirl are curious when their target leaves a club only to descend into the sewers. They carefully follow. Barda reaches up to the grate of the air duct when tendrils of black slice down upon her. She drops her Megarod. The inky creature quickly heads for it. The room tilts as an alarm sounds. Barda's Megarod falls out the window with the ink creature. It grabs it and turns into a woman with glider wings. Barda is too busy to notice as the entire penthouse is launched into space. Oracle is trying to get feedback from Black Canary as Barda's intermittent communicator signal comes through. Oracle tells Barda all the Birds are under attack. Barda says she's in space, right before she discovers a bomb's onboard. It goes off with a huge boom and the ship explodes. Oracle frantically announces: “All Teams. This is a code black. Barda is down. I repeat, code black. Barda is down”. Elsewhere a shadowy figures looks at pictures of the Birds saying “one down, four to go.”

The Huntress Podcast is back to talk about Batman: Huntress Cry For Blood 3, where the creators of this story stop, slow things down, and analyze the true struggle and pain of Helena Bertinelli. He says The Butterfly brought her to him. We can only assume he means the Question, who after all is the one that kicked her in the head last issue. Helena gets frustrated and threatens Richard before Vic Sage comes in. He comments that Helena's anger is like looking in a mirror. “We've come to know the world through violence and rage. We wear masks to hide from ourselves as much as others.” Then he reveals he is the Question and formally introduces himself to her. She quietly does the same. Meanwhile in Gotham, Tim Drake/Robin is meeting with Barbara Gordon aka Oracle. Tim doesn't believe the Huntress is the killer; it's too sloppy and she's too smart for this. Barbara is skeptical but Tim insists they have to learn the truth. Back at the cabin, Vic explains that Richard can teach Helena how to live, not just how to not die. Vic understands how isolated Helena is and that if she returns to Gotham now, she'll soon be dead or be forced to kill. Leaving her to think, Vic tells Richard he's returning to Gotham - he's got some questions. In Gotham, Tim returns to Barbara with newspaper clippings from Helena's past. They acknowledge that while Helena and Bruce both lost their parents at 8, in Helena's case all the Bertinelli's in the city were systematically eliminated, whether they were in the mafia or not. The real question is why and why Helena was left alive. Helena is doing Tai Chi with Richard. He explains, “Passion and rage as fuel. Fear and vengeance as destination. And the faster you move, the more your past drags at you, the more of you that breaks away.” She needs to remember to breathe. As Helena trains she acknowledges to herself that she lost her breath long ago, She's been running scared her whole life, trampling anyone or anything that gets in her way. But blood cries for blood and her family's is calling for her. How dare she refuse that? Later inspecting her costume, she tells Richard how the Huntress scares her. He says she should, that Huntress is a killer. But also that Helena no longer needs to don the mask, to be someone else. She already is the Huntress. Vic finally returns to take Helena back to Gotham. She seems calmer and more at peace. As the two walk down the mountain, Vic lets her know he stopped by Helena's apartment to help out with bills and chores and noticed it's being watched. She's not surprised. As they sit at a little town's bus stop, Vic asks her to tell the story of how she became the Huntress. Helena says: “It started in Sicily…”

A huge fight ensues with Oracle supplying help via drones. But when Dinah moves in front of the window, she's hit by a sniper's bullet. Meanwhile in the magical streets of The Seam, Big Barda continues her battle with the golems. She smashes them only for them to reform. No problem. She opens a boom tube to the moon and hits or tosses them through. She grabs their controller, Barter, and threatens to do the same to him unless he tells her how many others are after Batgirl and Constantine. Elsewhere in The Seam, the demon controlled Constantine continues it's attempt to get Batgirl to free it from it's bonds. Needless to say she's not even tempted. When the final golems attack, Batgirl smashes them then separates the parts by tossing them in various stores and barrels along the road. Back at the Lake House, Sin loses it when Dinah is shot at goes full Megaera, with green light blasting out of her and tendrils all doing their thing. She, or is it they, float out of the roof and threaten the League of Shadows, or whatever splinter cell this is, that they better gather their fallen and leave or she will take them apart. She further threatens to end them if she ever sees them again. Afterward Sin returns to care for Dinah. Dinah is worried if the being who just threatened the attackers was Sin or all Megaera. Sin isn't sure and Dinah reassures her they will find someone who can help. Back in The Seam, Batgirl and the demon infested Constantine reach the portal where the demon must be deposited. She rebuffs it again and is about to toss it in when Barda arrives to kick it through. A few moments later, the freed Constantine returns to the street. Dinah and Sin settle down to watch the sun rise at the Lake House. Sin expresses another concern. Some of the League of Shadows assassins she threatened appeared to be happy. She's possibly given them something new to covet: Megaera.

She gets out to confront him. He tells her the story of a man dreaming he's a butterfly that suddenly thinks perhaps he is a butterfly dreaming he's a man. Helena is not impressed and drives off. The next morning Helena heads out from her apartment to the school where she teaches. On the way she sees a sensationalized article linking the Huntress to mob killings. Helena thinks the reporter, Karen Frazier, must be mobbed up herself to write such a story. But Helena is disturbed by the article in another way. If the cops really are after the Huntress, there is the possibility Batman will reveal her identity to them. Then the ruling families of Gotham really will come for her blood. Meanwhile, Nightwing is talking with Oracle. He believes Helena did not kill her cousin despite one of the Huntress' crossbow bolts sticking out of his chest. Oracle is not so sure and isn't happy when he says he'll be talking to the Huntress. In an elegant house, Mario Cassamento, son to the mobster Santa Cassamento, and Vinnie joke around about seeing Helena the night before and how they'd like to get her out of her coat and into a warm bath. Mario's father proceeds to hit him in the head with a rolled up newspaper before storming out. That evening Nightwing pays Helena a visit at her apartment. He wants to offer his help but Helena isn't impressed. She still resents how she was manipulated by Batman during No Man's Land and isn't interested in Nightwing's help. Later that night dressed as the Huntress she visits the apartment of the reporter and finds her dead with two of the Huntress' crossbow bolts in her chest. The crime must have happened recently but a pounding on the door surprises Huntress. It's the cops. As she heads out the window, she can see plenty of cop cars below. She makes her way onto the roof only to find Batman and Nightwing waiting for her. Batman insists she is coming with him and it's not a choice. Instead of complying she tries to escape. But in the scuffle she accidently shoots Batman with her crossbow. Incensed, Nightwing comes for her full out. Her only chance of escape is to jump off the highrise roof into the Gotham harbor below. The fall nearly kills her but who is there to help drag her out of the water but The Question. He says she no longer has any friends in Gotham except for him and he has someone he wants her to meet. Collapsed on the dock, Huntress pitifully ties to be defiant, saying she won't go anywhere while she can still fight. So The Question kicks her in the head.

The group includes a quasi-manager named Heathcliff, a drummer and all around musician called Lord Byron, a keyboard player named Paloma, and a young mute girl they call Ditto as guitartist. Unfortunately the Black Canary shows are ending in violence, with Dinah in various fights. One newszine example sites Dinah fighting a group of gunmen. Needless to say, venues are starting to doubt the wisdom of booking the band. Backstage at the next stop Dinah hesitates, contemplating her bandaged fingers, the tears in her fishnets for a band-aids. However she puts on her boots and strides out on stage. After the show, Heathcliff tries to get their payment but once again, Dinah has been in a fight, this time with a group of men harassing some women. The venue owner is unhappy, but after spotting Dinah waiting behind her manager, he forks over the money. On the tour bus en route to their next stop, Lord Byron talks things over with Dinah. Byron tells her how much the record contract they recently signed means to them but that Dinah's actions risk giving the band a bad name. Plus Byron worries young Ditto couldn't defend herself if the violence should reach the rest of the band. Dinah is a mystery to her band as well as the public but now Byron asks Dinah to come clean. Dinah admits she's lived hard but makes a commitment to end the problems she's caused. Byron is thrilled when Dinah mentions her Sensei and even more excited when Dinah asks for help with her on stage moves. As the band unpacks at the next stop, a mysterious group of three suited individuals watch, talking about finding their target. At the sound check, Dinah marvels at the sounds Ditto can evoke from her guitar without help from pedals or electronics. Backstage before the concert Dinah talks to Heathcliff. He wants to know if this, performing, is really what she wants. Dinah explains she will finish the contract they signed. The money will help rebuild her life, her dojo, her team. Heathcliff asks again if she likes performing. She doesn't answer, instead stepping out on stage. Things are going well until Dinah spots the three suited individuals in the crowd. The three transform into inky humanoid alien things. As everyone takes cover, Dinah swings into action, eventually resorting to her Canary Cry to bring the roof down on top of the creatures. Dinah thinks they're after her, but their ranting make it clear they're actually after Ditto. The three alien things disappear through the hole in the ceiling. The band gathers and at first Dinah wants them to disperse while she protects Ditto alone. The band wants to stay together. Dinah says if they are going to do that then they need training, hand to hand first then weapons after that. The rest of the band is a bit stunned. As the bus travels to the next city, the group has no idea that the three ink humanoid creatures are hanging onto the back of the bus.

Mangual Assistant Editor: Darren Shan Editor: Rachel Gluckstern Group Editor: Mike Marts 28 – The Wings of Truth Welcome to Gothtopia! Gotham City, America's safest city, America's happiest city. Huh? We the reader realize this is a new reality but the Birds don't realize they have been transformed. They now wear white uniforms and new code names. Batgirl is now Bluebelle. Strix is Artemis. Condor is Eagle. And Black Canary is known as Warbler. Together they are the Wings of Truth. At a display of the many flying blimps of the city, Bluebelle, Artemis, and Eagle are joined by Warbler on her motorcycle. The four head to a children's charity event at the circus where they perform for the kids. Later at their headquarters, movie night is interrupted by word that Batman has gone berserk. The Wings of Truth head toward the fight to capture Batman where they learn Batman thinks everything they're seeing is a lie. Not to worry, says Dr. Crane. Batman will be taken to the Crane Center for Health and Wellness where he will be well cared for. The Wings of Truth take up the slack of superheroing in Gotham until Batman attempts to break out of the Crane Center along with Poison Ivy. The team joins the other heroes and a fight, of course, breaks out. Ivy tries to tell Warbler they need to wake up, can't they see they're filled with poison. Bluebelle reassures the others Batman is under control and she will stay while the other three return to HQ. They are asleep on the couches when someone sprays a gas into Warbler's face. She awakens confused. When her head clears she can now see the crappy apartment they are sleeping in and realizes who they really are. She is Black Canary once more. She is greeted by Ra's al Ghul who explains the entire city has been dosed with a chemical by the Dr. Crane, aka the Scarecrow. Ra's has awakened Black Canary to tempt her with a vial containing a tiny iota of the Lazarus Pit, the source of his regeneration. It is a sample to prove he can save her husband Kurt if she is willing to betray Mother Eve. After Ra's leaves, Black Canary tricks Condor and Strix into a speedboat. When they are far enough away from the city, the others regain their minds. However Black Canary can't return for Batgirl. The antidote she was given is no longer working. Batgirl finally makes her way back to the barge. She wants to know how Black Canary was in Gotham after she refused to leave Kurt's side. Black Canary explains she realized she'd made a mistake turning her back on the team and headed into Gotham to join them only to come under the spell of Scarecrow's drug. Batgirl then confronts Black Canary over her lack of leadership since Kurt's return. Black Canary agrees and asks Batgirl to lead instead. Batgirl hesitates, she has her own life to deal with, but finally agrees. Later by Kurt's bedside, Black Canary struggles over what to do with the vial. She told everyone she was temporarily cured by Poison Ivy instead of Ra's, hiding the fact she may be making a deal with the devil. Birds of Prey vol. 3 29 Cover Date: May 2014 Writer: Christy Marx Penciler: Robson Rocha Breakdowns: Scott McDaniel Inkers: Jonathan Glapion and Marc Deering Colorist: Chris Sotomayor Letterer: Dezi Sienty Assistant Editor: Darren Shan Editor: Rachel Gluckstern Group Editor: Mike Marts 29 – The Eve of Battle Condor is upset that the discovery of Black Canary's comatose husband Kurt has put a damper in his own relationship with Black Canary. He hears her screaming in pain as bad news about Kurt's condition has reached a crisis point. Uplink sees Condor in the hallway and tells him about trying to teach Strix to read on a tablet. On the last one Strix scratched out Gone Find Batgirl then disappeared. Condor heads to Gotham to look for both women. Black Canary returns to Kurt's side. After the removal of the nodes in his head, Kurt is in a permanent vegetative state. Black Canary decides to secretly give him the vial of Lazarus Pit essence that Ra's al Ghul tempted her with last issue. Miraculously Kurt starts asking for water. Black Canary now knows Ra's could cure Kurt as long as she's willing to betray Mother Eve. Hearing about Kurt's miraculous turn around, Mother Eve knows Black Canary is likely compromised but has made a decision to trust her regardless. She checks in with her staff. Ra's ships are on their way. Meanwhile Condor is contacted in the city by a drone projection of Ra's al Ghul. He tempts Condor with a bargain: let Ra's reach Mother Eve and in exchange Ra's will have Kurt killed. Condor says it must happen at the beginning of the battle and then they'll have a deal. As Ra's ship nears Mother Eve's, both sides prepare for the coming battle, it will be a fight with sword and fist. Mother Eve heads to the regeneration chamber where she will be helpless during Ra's attack. She says it must be Black Canary that guards her door. Batgirl and the others remain on deck with Mother Eve's forces. The regeneration of Mother Eve begins just as the first wave of Ra's assault reaches them.
