The REAL ID Act was passed by the U.S. Congress in May of 2005, as part of https://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/real-id-act-text.pdf (H.R. 1268). Due to costs, logistical issues, legal questions, its full implementation was delayed until 2008, 2011, 2013, and then in 2014 set to be gradually introduced instead. But delays continued into 2020, 2021, and finally until https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/2025-04/25_0414_fps_id-requirements-for-federal-facilities.pdf, when it went into full force - kind of. The REAL ID is a new form of https://www.tsa.gov/real-id/about-real-id. Even after 20 years of preparations, implementation is causing widespread confusion across U.S. airports. Up to 7% of domestic flight customers still do not have the new ID and this, mixed with general confusion about requirements, regulations, enforcement, etc., are causing delays and heightening suspicion of every citizen, especially because of the growing frustration and additional screening procedures put in place. However, those without the REAL ID can still fly. How? Well, they will be subject to additional security and the TSA will have to manually check their regular driver's licenses like they always have. These people may also be subject to additional questioning and documentation checkpoints. https://www.tsa.gov/news/press/releases/2025/04/28/tsa-lehigh-valley-international-airport-gets-new-credential?fbclid=IwY2xjawKd591leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFvaEh4VWJ3RmJadVFVdUhBAR6mF6CiS3Eva2ofGQGsU3L5tLIhNJkpUFiZAm1K74M_UpSAsEciqQY_oTWBKA_aem_3wMgsHVa4FW3Utc3QwY9qA just introduced new credential authentication technology to improve checkpoint screening procedures, yet another layer of security. https://www.usa.gov/real-id“Yes. If you do not upgrade your license or state ID, you can use a passport or one of these other acceptable forms of identification to fly.” The list provided includes everything from passports to tribal IDs and enhanced driver's licenses or enhanced identification cards, themselves basically state-run programs akin to the federal REAL ID. What it does not say is that you still may be able to fly without any of those additional ID cards. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that the exemption is not just a temporary measure while the bugs are worked out or a matter of presenting a passport: “If it's not compliant, they may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step, https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-homeland-security-chief-says-travelers-without-real-id-will-be-allowed-fly-2025-05-06/.” Without a REAL ID you can still travel, but you will likely be subject to the same, or increased, harassment, demeaning comments, or downright assault, by TSA agents trained to see noncompliants as terrorists. Anyone having ever opted out of the full body scanner knows this to be true. And by definition, this is coercion: “the practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.” The same tactics were used from 2020-2023 for health related reasons.A https://www.yahoo.com/news/know-getting-real-id-090257989.html: "Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant and who do not have another acceptable alternative (i.e., passport) can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint.” Notice that the words “the possibility” and not the actual guarantee itself, i.e., coercion. And coercion is one of the main red lines in the sand for any constitutionality of the REAL ID in the first place, because the anti-commandeering doctrine of SCOTUS prohibits federal authorities form compelling states to enact or administer federal programs - also, see Fourth Amendment and Tenth Amendment, which reserves powers not specifically delegated to the federal government to the states and people. This can be avoided by outsourcing the whole thing, including the database. Each state has a motor vehicle department which collects and stores the data for REAL ID and EDL or EIC. All of that data is this shared with the private nonprofit American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), run by boards, directors, and other agency affiliations related to the DMV in each state. Also, non-governmental entities, including corporations, nonprofits, local governments, and individual law enforcement agencies, that align with AAMVA's goals but do not have voting rights in governance, run the AAMVA. As of May 21, 2025, reports are making the rounds that the https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/news/2025/05/21/tsa-airport-security-privatization/83767563007/?fbclid=IwY2xjawKd599leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFvaEh4VWJ3RmJadVFVdUhBAR5FprsNQe5xs23YIi93GovLHkVz87_r7qfnoNZEfe15q7-Oznos2DTb5Lwmeg_aem_Uo91GFvr1c-9wZtd0-Rxag. The REAL ID has never fully been challenged due to political compromise resulting in delays, and states slowly adopting the standard. It's not illegal if states and people adopt the policy themselves through a sort of drawn out coercion of threats and the thought that it will never be fully implemented anyways after twenty years. Proponents, of course, argue that it keeps the country safe, linking the lack of these national ID cards to the cause of 911 - argued for under the Commerce Clause and Necessary and Proper Clause. As https://www.yahoo.com/news/real-id-america-now-national-110039671.html, however, “With REAL ID, America now has National ID cards and Internal Passports.”Interestingly, the original bill specifically says the Secretary of Homeland Security can expand the use of REAL ID for “any other purposes” they “shall determine,” with no other authorization. When you https://www.dhs.gov/archive/real-id-public-faqs, they say “No. REAL ID is a national set of standards, not a national identification card. REAL ID does not create a federal database of driver license information. Each jurisdiction continues to issue its own unique license, maintains its own records, and controls who gets access to those records and under what circumstances. The purpose of REAL ID is to make our identity documents more consistent and secure.”In other words, it's not a card but a standard; its not a federal database, but a state database that links to a nonprofit controlled by the federal government; it's about privacy, even though the records are collected as part of a drag net of coercion and threats; it's about ensuring consistency, but each jurisdiction issues its own “unique license” like they always have. Of course, none of this is discussed, debated, or even known by the public. Instead, they read heartfelt stories about https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/a-challenging-real-id-process-is-stranding-immigrants/ar-AA1F7FE9 who are essentially exempt anyways if they have a permanent resident card, border crossing card, foreign issued passport, immigration services card, and the like. Or they hear about https://www.yahoo.com/news/watch-fake-real-id-sites-164059826.html targeting travelers, as if the “real” REAL ID isn't itself a scam and unconstitutional, which is probably the main reason that DHS says https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-homeland-security-chief-says-travelers-without-real-id-will-be-allowed-fly-2025-05-06/” even without it. So what's the point? It's more extortion for profit (like TSA pre-check), security theater (like hygiene theater in 2020), coercive tactics to enforce compliance with illegal and unlawful dictates (like masking), and another step in criminalizing law abiding citizens (like the https://www.newsweek.com/what-quiet-skies-details-about-secret-flight-spy-program-revealed-1047915). Even the name is a scam, the “REAL ID” as opposed to all those fake sate issued ones by the same states that are now going to be forced to issue the true REAL ID. It's like “patriot act” or “big, beautiful bill.” *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. We start with a conversation about the first trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites! Mike reviews the romance / comedy We Live in Time, though he questions the comedy side of things... Taylor reviews Nonnas, as in Italian for grandmothers. Yes, Mike had to ask.
The subtitle may say "LAST Rites", but there's no way in hell I'll believe that... As long as there's money to make off of cheap paranormal jump scares, the Warrens can always return on screen. Enjoy, people.
The Conjuring franchise is back with it's final film. The trailer dropped, so we need to watch and discuss!Find us on Patreon for early access, spoilers, and exclusive contenthttps://www.patreon.com/c/scaretalk#theconjuring4 #theconjuring #theconjuringuniverse #trailerreaction

With James Gunn's Superman flying toward theaters and hailing the start of the DCU, we get a look at the followup to Peacemaker once again featuring John Cena, and giving us first looks at new DC characters played by Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Nathan Fillion + Frank Grillo in live action as Rick Flag Sr. along with the rest of the returning & much-loved ensemble; hinting at both even greater personal stakes and clues as to how Peacemaker could fit into the new DCU, this trailer was an absolute blast!! Next we check out the 4th & final film in the flagship Series in The Conjuring Universe centered around Ed & Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilso & Vera Farmiga). The Conjuring: Last Rites is based on the Warrens' final & most harrowing case & returning director Michael Chaves has us hopeful for a chilling & fitting sendoff to Hollywood's favorite ghost-hunting power couple. And finally, director Francis Lawrence breaks free from The Hunger Games to adapt a Stephen King novel with a sinister & strikingly simple setup -- as a group of teenage compete in an annual contest with chillingly simple rules: Walk or Die. The film looks tense & unsettling, not least because Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series, srsly SO MUCH freakin' iconic stuff) appears to be giving a chilling turn as the boys' dastardly drill-sargeant. Starring Alien Romulus' David Jonsson, Licorice Pizza's Cooper Hoffman, & a cast of upcomers - here's hoping we have another strong Stephen King adaptation on our hands!! On the evening of Saturday, July 21st, 1984, the local Catholic residents of the tiny town of Ronan, Montana, all gathered at 5:30 p.m. to celebrate mass with their new priest, Father John Kerrigan, who had just been assigned to their parish. He never showed. He didn't show up Sunday morning either. Days later, his bloodstained clothes were discovered along a highway, but his body has never been found.Father Kerrigan's case has many similarities to the disappearances and murders of three other priests. Episode 35 - Murdock and Marvel: 1992 Part 2 Well, here we are. Image starts a new creator-owned era, even as the man who created the superhero sensation dies, along with one of his creators. 1992 was a very big year for changes. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1992. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #300-311, Daredevil Annual #8, Punisher Annual #5, Web of Spider-Man Annual #8, Infinity War #1-4, Death's Head 2 #4, Fantastic Four #367-368 and #370, Alpha Flight #111, Marc Spector: Moon Knight #41 and #43, Marvel Comics Presents #113, Spider-Man Special Edition #1, What if…? #44, Daredevil Gangwar and Infinity Gauntlet graphic novels and Marvel Masterworks #21 and #22 Writing: Dan G Chichester (300-309) , Glenn Herdling (310-311) Pencils: Lee Weeks (300), M.C. Wyman (301-303), Ron Garney (304), Scott McDaniel (305-311) Inks: Al Williamson (300), Chris Ivy (301-303, 305), Bud LaRosa (304, 306-311), The year begins with the huge double issue that concludes the Last Rites storyline that began late in 1991. Daredevil has been enlisted by SHIELD to take down Kingpin and by extension Hydra who is bankrolling his media empire. Last week we saw the pieces get put in place and during our spotlight this week, we'll see how this terrific story ends. Next, we see Daredevil take on one of his oldest foes, the Owl, in a solid 3-book story arc. Outside of the spotlight book, “34 Hours” from May 1992 is one of the best single-story books in the last few years. In it we see Daredevil saving lives across a 34-hour timeframe. We are then introduced to a new villain, Surgeon General, who's picking up men in clubs, drugging them and then operating on them to steal body parts for the black market. To set a trap for the Surgeon General, Daredevil sets a trap using Peter Parker as bait. Fortunately for Peter, the trap worked with the help of Parker's secret identity, Spider-Man. Next, we get another multi-book story arc involving the Nomad and Punisher called Dead Man's Hand. This 7-part story arc that takes place in Las Vegas shows various crime factions all trying to get a piece of the Kingpin's empire now that he's not there to lead it. During this event we also see what has happened to the kingpin. Among the groups fighting for Kingpin's empire include – The Hand, Yakuza, the Maggia, Hydra, Hammer Industries, Andreas and Andrea Strucker (Known as Fenris?). This story was hard to follow as several parts of the story appear in other books (parts 3&4 were in Nomad & Punisher books) and part 6 was somewhere else but was communicated to the reader. After Vegas, Matt Murdock returns to New York and we finish out the year with a multi-book story arc with Calypso, the Nameless One and a Daredevil doppelganger known as Hellspawn from the Infinity War Crossover. This story centers around a Haitian refugee named Yves Chapoteau who is seeking asylum in the U.S. During the story Calypso performs a voodoo ritual on Daredevil and enslaves him to her. He is able to escape by destroying her magic soul-possessing jars which also free some other zombie refugees who attack her. In an epilogue of this story, we see two people digging up someone's grave. New Powers, Toys or Places: Back in Vegas for the Dead Man's Hand story arc. New Supporting Characters: Yves Chapoteau (Haitian refugee who seeks out Matt Murdock for his asylum case) New Villains: Surgeon General (woman seducing men and then stealing organs for the black market), Hellspawn (Daredevil doppleganger from Infinity War crossover who's killed by Calyspo) This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #300 January 1992 “Last Rites Part 4: Long Live the King” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Writers still matter! BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.
Episode 33 - Murdock and Marvel: 1991 Part 2 It's the year of Marvel's greatest success…and quite possibly its greatest failure! Welcome to 1991, the year that sets the stage for the next evolution of American comics. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1991. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #288-299, Daredevil Annual #7, Marvel Comic Presents #69-72, #75, #81 and #91, What if…? 24 and 26, Avengers #332-#333, Excalibur #39, Darkhawk #6, Incredible Hulk: Ground Zero, Very Best of Marvel Comics, Very Best of What If, Amazing Spider-Man: The Wedding graphic novels and Marvel Masterworks Writing: Ann Nocenti (288-291) Dan G Chichester (292-299) Pencils: Lee Weeks (288, 291-295, 297-299) Kieron Dwyer (289-290), Ron Garney (296) Inks: Al Williamson and Weeks (288) Williamson and Fred Fredricks (289), Fredricks (290-292), Williamson (293-299) The year begins with Matt Murdock having dreams of Elektra and Stick and the Kingpin orchestrating a similar ultimatum to throw a boxing match to save Nyla whom he's kidnapped. Matt refuses to do so, wins the fight and saves Nyla with the help of Ben Urich Meanwhile Bullseye continues to pretend to be Daredevil and ruin his reputation, but is confronted and defeated by Murdock who's disguised as Bullseye. After taking on Bullet for one last time, Matt Murdock reunites with his friend and law partner Foggy Nelson – who's been working on getting Murdock's law license reinstated. As Daredevil and the Punisher deal with Taskmaster and Tombstone causing trouble, we see Kingpin and Typhoid Mary enter a deal with a General Strang, an investor who agrees to fund Fisk's media enterprises but secretly hopes to infiltrate Fisk's finances from within. Halfway through the year we see the Hand returns to New York and we learn they were the ones behind setting lose Taskmaster and Tombstone on the city. What follows is a multi-book story arc involving Daredevil attempts to take down the Hand. This includes a cameo by the Ghost Rider and some of Stick's old students (including Stone) showing up to help Daredevil in the final showdown – which is our spotlight story this week. The year ends with the first 3 of 4 parts to the Last Rites story arc. In it, we see Daredevil causing division between Kingpin and Typhoid before having her committed. Then we see Nick Fury bring Matt Murdock into SHIELD and ask him for help taking down Kingpin and Hydra who's bankrolling his media enterprise. We then see the chess pieces put in place for a final showdown. The finale of this story is a giant double issue #300 we'll talk about in 1992. Jonin (head of the latest version of the Hand in New York), a new Izanami (large female enforcer of the Hand) This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #296 September 1991 “Balancing Act” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Writers matter! Fr. Elias Mary Mills, F.I. served as Rector of the Shrine Church at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Lacrosse, Wisconsin from 2016 to 2021. He was ordained in May of 2000. In Today's Show If we can have a relic from a saint, why can't we keep a portion of a loved one's ashes? My brother recently passed away and I have mass intentions scheduled on his behalf. I was wondering if there's a time period that we stop doing this? If a soul has already gone to heaven (or hell), what happens to our prayers for them? Are they for nothing? Does the Roman Rite take a different approach to tattoos than say the Eastern Rites? What is Father's opinion on how Sr. Agnes was treated? How effective are Last Rites when the person is unconscious? How does the sacrament differ in that instance from a patient who is awake and alert? Should Catholics read the Ethiopian Bible? Certain religions claim that anyone that is not part of said religion is an enemy. They believe God is telling them to annihilate, enslave, put extra taxes on them, etc. Unless they convert. What is your opinion on these false religions saying that their God is telling them to do these actions? What is the difference between “Jesus, I trust You” and “Jesus, I trust IN You”? There is a prayer group in a nearby parish that says their meetings feature something called “Lectio Divina”. Can you explain what that is? When Jesus says, you must take up your cross and follow Me, I think we tend to take that metaphorically – as in “we all have our crosses to bear”. But when He said that to His disciples, what must they have been thinking when He said “take up your cross”, because they must have known that carrying a cross meant crucifixion? In Psalm 90 it is mentioned that we live 70 or 80 years but most of them are spent in drudgery and toil. Does that mean we disobey God's will by living longer than that? Questions Covered: 05:58 – I visited Vatican City last summer and was shocked at the amount of treasure, art, and also general booty from extinct civilizations that was there. How did the Papacy obtain all of this and why do they still possess it? 13:30 – What semester-long classes/programs would you recommend for Catholic high schoolers that are similar to RCIA that recap their faith, strengthen it, reinforce it, and so on? In other words, anything that recaps their faith that is online that will also help them grow in their love for God. 16:19 – I was asked by my atheist son, “If God, beyond a shadow of a doubt, asked you to kill me, would you?” I confirmed that it was “beyond a shadow of a doubt” and then responded “Yes.” I place God's will above all else. My atheist husband then turned on me and insisted that that was unacceptable. I feel as though I was just duped by a straw man argument. I'm so upset I don't want to even be around them and just feel like grieving that they both so badly misunderstand. Help? 29:21 – I'm currently a Baptist Christian but I'm having a hard time choosing between Baptist (Protestant) Christian and Catholic Christian. The reason I'm Baptist is because I believe that we are all guilty sinners who deserve hell and only Jesus Christ paying for our sins is what saves us and I don't think you can ever lose your salvation. …. after learning some church history and getting a good amount of my questions answered I'm starting to lean more towards Catholicism. But I will always believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven and his sacrifice is enough and we can't work for our salvation. I believe we will be rewarded in heaven for our good works but I don't think the good works are what save us. Does the Catholic Church believe we Christians are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ paying for our sins? 37:25 – Our 30-year-old son has left the faith and is living with his girlfriend. Is it a sin to allow them to stay in the same room in our home? My spiritual director has told me that it would be a serious sin for me, as the spiritual leader of my family, to allow this to happen. I have lovingly discussed this with my son and told him that he and his girlfriend are always welcome in our home but must sleep in separate rooms. This did not go well and our son has refused to come to our home in the future. I made it clear how much I love and care about him. We still communicate, but he claims that he and his girlfriend are upset and hurt over this. Even though my wife agreed to my following my conscious regarding this issue, she doesn’t see things in the same way as me and this has created tension between me and my wife. She feels that this decision has negatively impacted our relationship with him. Most of our other 5 adult children also disagree with my actions. I pray and sacrifice daily for my son’s conversion as well as that of his girlfriend, who is unbaptized and was raised without any faith. I also pray for my wife, marriage, and family. I don’t know what else I can do. It is just a terrible place to be in. I think that it might be helpful for my wife if you could provide me with some specific references to the Catholic faith referring to this type of situation. Thanks for your assistance. God Bless you and your ministry. 46:14 – If you get the Last Rites from a Catholic priest, do you automatically go to Heaven? Also, is it true you can get the Last Rites from anyone? 50:48 – I am concerned about my parents. They were raised Catholic but chose to go with non-denominational Christianity. I do not know their reasons for leaving the Catholic faith. My inquiry is if my parents, both of them or one of them, desired to return to the Catholic faith then what would they have to do? …
