Anything in life can happen in a show and every clown gets to build a mountain on Anime Was (Not) A Mistake presents Sinister Six. Tonight, Jonathan and Dan are musically inclined inmates at Arkham Asylum as they get lost in the madness that is Todd Phillips's  Joker: Folie a Deux (2024). Join us as we sing and dance through this (nonmusical) and try to correct the flaws of this crown prince of crime flick. With returning stars to the sinister stew like Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, (one doesn't deserve the sinister association IMO) if only our friends could see us now. All the aspects of this salacious sequel will be thoroughly examined before we take the stand! Jonathan's untrained voice and Dan's obsession with late night television hosts. Will the Joker be us?!?! All we know is that after the episode is done, we will be smiling our Glasgow Smiles, laughing manically, all for the love of the show. It's the kind of design where every turn feels consequential—don't plan accordingly and be challenged to catch up to the other players. The game's charm comes from how accessible it feels despite its core; turns are quick, the iconography is clean, and the tension ramps steadily as players jockey for position on a board that never quite seems to have enough to go around. Flip 7 With a Vengeance takes the opposite approach, embracing chaotic, push‑your‑luck energy with a theatrical flair. It builds on the original Flip 7 formula but adds a layer of “gotcha” cards and combo‑driven moments that make the table erupt. It's fast, loud, and intentionally swingy—the kind of filler that shines when you want to reset the mood or get a group laughing. DC Breakout, meanwhile, provides quick, fun experience in a racing game where random dice roll meets strategic position that allows for some tense situations as players jockey for the finish line. It's April Fool's Day* and the Joker has led an inmate revolt of Arkham Asylum! In 1989, Tim Burton's Batman was the year's hottest movie, and fans took to comic book shops and bookstores starving for more Dark Knight content. What they found was…a dense, 128-page experimental narrative featuring terrifying expressionist paint and artwork with a story crammed with allusions to the Tarot, Passion plays, St. George the Dragonslayer, and Carl Jung. Was this an April's Fools prank DC was pulling on new readers? Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth has been praised as a brilliant psychological-horror take on Batman by some and a pretentious mess by others; even writer Grant Morrison and artist Dave McKean don't see eye to eye! It's a graphic novel open to interpretation, and we'll guide you through a bunch of possible readings, unpack some symbolism, and use the book's subtitle to unlock the ambition behind one of the strangest Batman stories ever told.* No really, check your calendarCONTENT WARNINGS: Lurid and sensationalist approaches to the concepts of mental health and “insanity,” as well as other disturbing topics befitting a “mature readers” graphic novel.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we comment on ten years of doing this podcast. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Note: we recorded our first podcast on Feb 26th, 2016. This episode reflects that date. At the time, we actually banked a few episodes, and decided to hold off a week to do that. We never banked an episode again :)   Issues covered: ten years of podcasting, counting series and games, what kind of gamer are you?, balance in all things, the types of games Brett went deep on, games that exemplify Tim's games, first-person shooters and third-person action adventure, earliest games we played, latest game we played, surprise moments, the butter knife returns, knucklehead stealth, crazy world-altering moments, singing reviews, our longest series, how many interviews, the backstory of Daedalus, cultural sensibility, a grotty fish stew, staying under the radar, cramming features in at the end, pitching vs shipping, how many community episodes we've had, having a community game server, the charity event, getting to understand streaming, praying at the shrine of humility, more than 500 hours of podcasts, keys that aren't keys, the team makes the game, tell them less so they can discover more, the importance of constraints, mortality, letting the player choose, how long are we going to keep this up, knowing when to end, a little thanks each way, fueling us.  Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: June, Infinite Backlog, The Evil Within, Resident Evil, Trespasser, Ultima (series), Souls-likes, Bloodborne, MYST (series), Obduction, Cyan, Eye of the Beholder, Might and Magic (series), Kaeon, Kingdom Hearts, Arkham Asylum (series), Halo (series), Shadow of the Colossus, Legend of Zelda (series), Portal, Deus Ex, Thief, Dishonored, Prey, Colossal Cave Adventure, Adventure, Rogue, Fez, Dwarf Fortress, Plundered Hearts, Final Fantasy Tactics, Apocalypse Now, Shenmue, Deadly Premonition, Morrowind, Hitman (series), Clint Hocking, Splinter Cell, Spelunky, Fez, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Metal Gear Solid, Calamity Nolan, Final Fantasy (series), Sebastian Deken, Lani Lum, SW: Republic Commando, Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, Randy Smith, Greg LoPiccolo,  Sean Vesce, Zack Norman, Janos Flosser, Sam Lake, Ken Levine, Borut Pfifer, Julian Gollop, Fallout, X-COM: Enemy Unknown, Star Wars: Starfighter, Andrew Kirmse, Daron Stinnett, Darren Johnson, Reed Knight, Kim Swift, BioStats, Minecraft, LostLake, Mors, mysterydip, Defeating Games for Charity, Video Game History Foundation, Eternal Darkness, Shigeru Miyamoto, Brad Furminger, Marcus Aurelius, "Jenny," Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.  TTDS: 11:15 Next time: TBA! After that, we take the first steps into Pokemon Shield, with the journey to becoming champion taking us through the magnificent Galar region. We also have another game that's new to both of us in Ridge Racer 6, the Xbox 360 exclusive that's already a blast to play. Plus, we discuss Sony's closure of Bluepoint games, a devastating story. Will Rose and Kevin Schaeffer just got back from a thrilling trip to the drive-in, and they're buzzing to dive into the holiday classic, "Christmas with the Joker" from "Batman: The Animated Series." Right off the bat, they agree that this episode is a must-watch during the festive season, capturing the essence of what makes the series so iconic. They chat about how the dynamic between Batman, Robin, and the Joker is playful yet packed with that classic Batman charm—complete with clever puns and dark humor, making it a standout holiday special. With the amazing voice work from Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, they highlight how the animation and storytelling seamlessly blend into a delightful Christmas experience without losing the gritty essence of Gotham. As they reminisce about their childhoods and the nostalgia tied to this episode, they wrap up with some witty banter and even suggest fun snack pairings for your own viewing experience, proving that even in the darkest corners of Gotham, a little holiday cheer can shine through! The discussion kicks off with a nostalgic vibe as Will and Kevin dive into the holiday classic, "Christmas with the Joker" from the iconic "Batman: The Animated Series." They set the stage as if they were just chilling at a drive-in, soaking up the festive atmosphere while dissecting this beloved episode. Kevin can't contain his excitement, reminiscing about how pivotal this series was in shaping his love for all things geeky. The duo highlights the episode's seamless blend of superhero action and holiday spirit, arguing that it perfectly captures the essence of Batman and his world. They both agree that the voice work from Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill is top-notch, breathing life into their characters in a way that makes them unforgettable. They chuckle over the episode's clever puns and witty banter, pointing out how the humor feels organic rather than forced. Batman's perpetual grumpiness about the holidays is a running gag, and Robin's attempts to lighten the mood provide a delightful contrast. The duo emphasizes the importance of this episode as a yearly tradition, comparing it to holiday staples like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Home Alone," thereby establishing its status in the pantheon of Christmas specials. As the conversation progresses, they explore the underlying themes of family and belonging that resonate throughout the episode, making it a heartwarming watch for viewers of all ages, and they can't help but smile at the charming chaos that ensues when the Joker is involved.Transitioning into the plot, the hosts provide a rundown of the episode's events, starting with the Joker's outrageous escape from Arkham Asylum aboard a rocket-powered Christmas tree! They cheerfully walk through Batman and Robin's attempts to thwart the Joker's mischievous plans, which include kidnapping Commissioner Gordon and setting a series of traps around Gotham City. The stakes are high, but the tone remains light, with Kevin and Will noting how the episode balances action with humor, allowing for a fun viewing experience without becoming overly dark or violent. They appreciate how the Joker, while certainly a nefarious character, is portrayed in a way that's more whimsical than terrifying, making him accessible for younger audiences. The duo also acknowledges how the episode cleverly weaves in classic Christmas tropes, from holiday songs to festive decorations, while maintaining the essence of a thrilling Batman adventure. Their banter is filled with playful jabs and nostalgia, creating an engaging atmosphere that keeps listeners entertained. As the conversation reaches its climax, Will and Kevin delve into the deeper meanings of the episode, reflecting on the themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the true spirit of Christmas. They analyze Batman's character arc, noting that while he maintains his typical stoicism, there are hints of warmth and humanity as he interacts with Robin and...

SupermanSuperman's Box Office Triumph & DCU UpdatesThe DC Universe is taking shape, and it all starts with Superman. The film has officially crossed $614 million worldwide, with $353M domestic (57.5%) and $260M international (42.5%). James Gunn has called the movie's success the “biggest relief of his life” because if it hadn't worked, the future of the entire DCU slate—from Supergirl to Lanterns—would have been in jeopardy.Superman Box Office UpdateDomestic box office: $353,302,360International box office: $260,800,000Worldwide total: $614,102,360This breakdown shows how crucial U.S. audiences remain for superhero films, even as international numbers grow.Variety and Deadline Report on Superman Profit MarginSuperman has an 8-week profit margin of about $125 million. It is the seventh-highest grossing film of the year.By comparison Man of Steel's profit margin was $42.7 million. We explain why domestic is still more profitable to studios than international.Gunn Relieved by Superman SuccessJames Gunn admitted that Superman's success was critical for DC Studios:“If Superman didn't work, I'm the head of DC Studios! What am I gonna do now? We have Supergirl, Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, Clayface—they're all connected to this!”PeacemakerSuperman's Visit to the Peacemaker SetA behind-the-scenes photo dated July 23, 2024 sparked speculation. David Corenswet appeared on the Peacemaker set in full Superman costume while James Gunn was splitting directing duties between Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. Fans believe this signals a direct connection between the two projects, with Superman potentially playing a meaningful role in Peacemaker Season 2. We disagree somewhat. How Would Fleury See Hawkgirl?Fans asked James Gunn online what Fleury might think of Hawkgirl. His playful response:“I think he'd wonder what's wrong with her head and wouldn't really know.”Yes the Grammar Fuck Up Was IntentionalJames Gunn confirmed that the infamous “Your the best” typo was intentional, sparking fan discussion. He also joked about Harcourt's “Thirstcourt” side in her texts, keeping his trademark banter alive.ClayfaceClayface – Gotham City Map Easter EggsA leaked Gotham City Transit Authority map revealed nods to Batman lore: Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemical, the Iceberg Lounge, Blackgate Penitentiary, Gotham Knights sporting complex, Wayne-owned buildings, Kane Estate, and Kane Memorial Bridge. Read transcriptHoly cowl-wearing console catastrophe, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics we're grappling-hooking our way into the surprisingly deep shadows of 2005's Batman Begins video game – because apparently someone at Eurocom looked at Christopher Nolan's gritty reboot and thought, “You know what this needs? A fear meter and the ability to summon actual bats to terrify thugs into submission!” Released across more platforms than Batman has traumatic childhood memories, this movie tie-in somehow managed to land on PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance without completely embarrassing itself in the process. While most movie games crash and burn faster than if I tried to drive the Batmobile, this stealth-action adventure actually tried to do something interesting with its “High Frequency Transponder” gadget and environmental intimidation mechanics that made enemies drop their weapons in sheer terror. Joining us for this digital descent into Gotham's criminal underworld is the incredibly talented Wells Thompson, creative mastermind behind indie comic sensations and the brilliant mind that helped bring us The Scorpion and the Queen (among a bunch of other Kickstarter projects) and the force over at WellsThompson.com. Wells brings his unique perspective on comic storytelling and adaptations to help us figure out whether this game captured the essence of both the Dark Knight's origin story and Nolan's cinematic vision, or if it belongs in Arkham Asylum alongside the rest of the movie tie-in disasters. From the surprisingly robust stealth segments that actually rewarded patience over button-mashing, to those Batmobile sequences that had us questioning our life choices, we'll explore how this Eurocom-developed title managed to be the last Batman movie to get a proper video game adaptation – and whether that's a good thing or a tragedy. So grab your utility belt and join us as we investigate whether fear really is the best weapon, or if this game should have stayed in the cave where it belongs! Learn such things as: Where does this game fit into the timeline of the movie? Is it a problem that I could just buy the driving parts by themselves? How many times can you do the same puzzle? And so much more! You can find Wells on BlueSky @wellsthomp, his newsletter Comics, Cats, and Cocktails, his current Kickstarter The Scorpion and the Queen or just go ahead and see all of his stuff on Kickstarter, and of course his website WellsThompson.com. [School of Movies 2025] After the harsh, oppressive atmosphere of I Saw the TV Glow we turn to an altogether funnier tale of trans discovery with Vera Drew's semiautobiographical, anarchic reshaping of DC's Clown Princess of Crime. From the painfully normalising cornfields of Smallville, Kansas comes a child who asks their alarmed mother "Was in born in the wrong body?". The only possible response to this is of course sessions at Arkham Asylum with Doctor Crane and a prescription of Smilex to chase that depression and anxiety away. We follow this confused young person to Gotham, where they find their calling in a thinly-veiled Saturday Night Live setup, doing stand-up comedy alongside The Penguin, Ra's al Ghul and a trans-masc chap named Mr J, riffing hard on both fallen Robin Jason Todd and Jared Leto's Joker. Our hero gives themselves the mantle of Joker the Harlequin... and comedy in Gotham will never be the same! This movie was pulled together during lockdown, and thrives on a garage-punk, scrapbook style that energetically propels you through the troubled life of someone just trying to be themselves in a loud, chaotic world. Dive deep into the shadows of Gotham as Geek History Lesson embarks on a gripping journey through Batman's Dark Age—spanning from 1985 to 2000. This era redefined the Caped Crusader, courtesy of visionary creators like Frank Miller, whose "The Dark Knight Returns" brought a gritty realism to Bruce Wayne's world. Alongside Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke," which delved into the twisted psyche of the Joker, and Grant Morrison's innovative narratives in "Arkham Asylum," these stories sculpted a darker, more complex Batman. This period ushered in a renaissance of the Dark Knight, transforming him into a symbol of vigilante justice steeped in moral ambiguity, setting the stage for Batman's evolution for years to come. Is the Joker actually “insane”? Does Two-Face have “multiple personality disorder” by today's standards? From an ethical perspective, do Gotham's rogues belong in prison or in rehab? In works like The Penguin, Joker: Folie a Deux, and Batman: White Knight, DC villains have brought "main character energy" to life, proving themselves as enduring figures in media storytelling—but just how well do these baddies depict the mental health landscape of today, and is there anything wrong with celebrating villain vibes? Media psychologist Drea Letamendi, Ph.D. (Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics), screenwriter Ernie Altbacker (Batman: Hush Animated), and comics writer Kyle Higgins (Nightwing, Batman Beyond 2.0, Batman: Gate of Gotham) deconstruct, decriminalize, and debunk Gotham City's most notorious institution and the stories behind it. Moderated by Brian Ward (The Arkham Sessions Podcast).

In this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki analyze HBO's The Penguin series starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. Set in Matt Reeves' Batman universe following the events of The Batman movie, the show explores the power vacuum left in Gotham's criminal underworld after the fall of crime boss Carmine Falcone. What makes Oz Cobb a compelling villain protagonist? The hosts discuss how the series portrays Oswald "Oz" Cobb (The Penguin) as a complex character who constantly shifts between sympathetic and monstrous. Unlike previous iterations that leaned into fantastical elements, this Penguin is grounded as a mobster with a physical disability who uses his exceptional charisma and manipulation skills to climb Gotham's criminal ladder. The show reveals his troubled childhood, including his complicated relationship with his mother and the shocking revelation that he was responsible for his brothers' deaths. How does The Penguin explore themes of respect and power?Matthew and Riki examine how Oz's actions are driven by his desperate need for respect and recognition. The series shows how he positions himself as a champion for the neglected citizens of Crown Point—getting electricity restored to the neighborhood while simultaneously building his criminal empire. This "crime socialism" approach allows him to frame himself as fighting for fairness and equality within the criminal world, convincing lower-level criminals to revolt against their bosses and support him instead. What makes the relationship between Oz and Victor so central to the story? The hosts highlight how the mentor-protégé relationship between Penguin and Victor Aguilar serves as the emotional core of the series. Though toxic and complicated—with Penguin both bullying Victor for his stutter while fiercely defending him from others who do the same—their bond provides some of the most compelling moments in the show. The hosts note interesting parallels to the Batman-Robin dynamic, positioning it as a dark mirror of that heroic relationship.Other topics covered in the episode:How Cristin Milioti's Sophia Falcone serves as a compelling antagonist with her own complex motivations for revengeThe shocking finale twist and its implications for Penguin's character developmentThe portrayal of Arkham Asylum and its problematic depiction of mental health institutionsConnections to Matt Reeves' broader Batman universe and potential future storylinesThe grounded approach to classic Batman villains compared to previous adaptationsHow the show depicts crime families filling power vacuums—similar to real-world political situationsThe Penguin demonstrates how villain-centered narratives can provide rich ethical territory to explore when characters are given depth and complexity. By examining the psychology and motivations behind traditionally one-dimensional villains, the show creates compelling television that challenges viewers to question their sympathies while never fully redeeming its monstrous protagonist. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Also, Jan 6 cops were the rioters.  Trump's biggest corruption ever, and possibly the biggest this week... or maybe today, is to create a Trump-centric economy and kill the watchdog. This began before the inauguration, when early crypto traders stroked the $TRUMPet and made millions from nothing, for no one. Trump is a narcissistic sociopathic grifter, but he knows what side his bread is buttered on and isn't interested in destroying all of his adoring fans. Elon Musk, however, is in this for the Lulz. Batman video games got a resurgence with 2009's Arkham Asylum, continued to be critically acclaimed with 2011's Arkham City, and then started to become divisive with 2013's Arkham Origins and especially 2015's Arkham Knight. Since Arkham Origins takes place during Christmas, we've chosen to dive into that one. Arkham Origins seems to be the odd one out, the black sheep, when discussing this series, and we don't understand why- if the reason for disliking this game is that it doesn't star Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill...you're going to have to find another reason.
