Marvel's Most Wanted are here to deliver some Justice like Lightning! Case and Jmike reflect on the latest MCU entry, Thunderbolts*, with friend of the show, Joe Mastropiero. Overview In the latest episode of the podcast, hosts Case Aiken and Jmike Folson, along with guest Joe Mastropiero, delve into Marvel's Thunderbolts movie, connecting its themes to the recently released Superman trailer. They discuss the film's characters, including Yelena, Bucky, and the controversial Sentry, addressing how the characters' darker backstories lend themselves to a redemption arc that deviates from their comic origins. The hosts explore the movie's structure, its exploration of trauma through the lens of the Void character, and the significance of the Superman archetype in modern storytelling, highlighting a potential cultural shift towards more hopeful narratives. The episode concludes with updates about the podcast, including upcoming episodes and ways for listeners to engage through Discord and Patreon, while emphasizing the importance of community interaction in discussing these themes. Notes Introduction and Superman Trailer Discussion (00:00 - 15:45) Hosts Case Aiken and Jmike Folson welcome guest Joe Mastropiero to discuss Marvel's Thunderbolts movie The hosts explained the Superman connection to Thunderbolts: the Sentry character is a Superman analog The group discussed the recently released Superman trailer featuring David Corenswet Logan Crowley provided audio commentary praising the trailer's rural American portrayal of the Kents The trailer shows Lois Lane interviewing Clark Kent and Superman's moral conflict with authority figures Group discussed potential Justice Society appearance and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor Thunderbolts Team History and Setup (15:46 - 29:34) Original Thunderbolts comic (1996) featured villains disguised as heroes after mainstream heroes disappeared The comic team was led by Baron Zemo with members including Moonstone, Atlas, Mach 1, and Songbird The team evolved over time from redemption-seeking villains to government ops team (similar to Suicide Squad) The movie roster differs significantly from comic versions, causing initial fan confusion The Sentry character is a controversial Superman analog with bipolar disorder and a dark alter ego called 'The Void' The Sentry has extreme power levels that create storytelling challenges in the Marvel universe Movie Characters Review: Part 1 (29:35 - 49:41) Yelena (Florence Pugh): Burned-out assassin who serves as the audience viewpoint character Bucky (Sebastian Stan): Former Winter Soldier, moved away from his congressman storyline Red Guardian (David Harbour): Soviet super-soldier who brings enthusiasm and comic relief Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen): Character with phasing abilities who had plot elements removed Taskmaster: Briefly appears in the film but is killed early to establish stakes All characters are government-created weapons now without masters, seeking purpose Movie Characters Review: Part 2 (49:42 - 01:00:08) US Agent (Wyatt Russell): Portrayed as a physically powerful but unlikeable douchebag Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus): Manipulative politician/spymaster who brings the team together Mel: Character who unexpectedly survives despite seeming setup for death Bob/Sentry (Lewis Pullman): Mild-mannered man who transforms into the golden-costumed Sentry The Void manifestation was effectively portrayed through shadow effects and 'Hiroshima-style shadows' The film effectively handles Sentry's extreme power levels by keeping him sidelined for most of the story ️ Movie Structure and Themes (01:00:10 - 01:10:23) Film has strong setup and payoff elements with well-structured action sequences Team is brought together when 'they are the evidence' that needs to be eliminated The movie differs from expectations of being a Suicide Squad-type government contract story The Void serves as vehicle for showing characters' trauma and psychological issues Despite differences from comics, film maintains core theme of redemption for characters with dark pasts Characters take on 'New Avengers' name by the end, connecting to comic history Superman Archetype Discussion (01:10:26 - 01:21:42) Discussion about why both dark and hopeful Superman archetypes resonate with audiences Joe highlighted importance of Superman's moral compass coming from supportive family/community Dark Superman versions explore 'what if' scenarios without those support structures The group noted a possible cultural shift toward desiring more hopeful superhero stories after a period of darker interpretations Century briefly shows Superman-like qualities before reverting to darker nature Film effectively portrays the burden of power on someone with mental health issues Show Updates and Promotion (01:21:43 - 01:27:49) Case announced upcoming Men of Steel episodes (#146-150) including Hulk vs Superman and Supergirl from Krypton The hosts promoted their Discord community as the best way for listeners to interact with them Men of Steel now has a Patreon at patreon.com/certainpovmedia with various support tiers Case thanked their first ten executive producer-level supporters by name Carter Hallett Sean Muir Lee Greger Memento Young Logan Crowley Joe Mastropiero Casey Aiken Nancy Aiken Adam Samtur Keith Lehtinen Case mentioned writing essays for Patreon subscribers (even at free tier) Final promotion for 'We Have Issues' podcast reviewing weekly comic releases Action items Listeners Join the Men of Steel Discord to interact with hosts and discuss the Superman trailer and Thunderbolts (01:21:42) Check out and possibly support the show's new Patreon at patreon.com/certainpovmedia (01:23:07) Case Aiken Schedule essay releases more consistently on Patreon going forward (01:25:57) Complete and release the Naomi episode that was previously mentioned

In this episode of Hit Rewind, hosts Michael and John explore the diverse landscape of comic books from 1999. While Marvel faced significant financial struggles, leading to the sale of many assets, DC Comics thrived with innovative and captivating narratives. The discussion delves into Marvel's attempts to stay afloat despite bankruptcy, including the relaunch of iconic titles and the introduction of new miniseries like Moon Knight and Black Widow. On the other hand, DC Comics soared with compelling arcs such as "No Man's Land" and the return of the Justice Society. Notable runs from creators like Grant Morrison in the "JLA" series and Chuck Dixon in the Bat-related titles showcased the vibrant creativity driving DC during this period. Additionally, the episode touches on independent comics and the emergence of Wildstorm's America's Best Comics, further illustrating the dynamic shifts within the comic book industry at the turn of the millennium.

Hello Legends! Yes, we can use that title this week.  Thanks to Lex Luthor, part of our League gets transported to a different reality. One where John Stewart's childhood comic book heroes are real. The Justice Guild of America are a version of the Justice Society. The JGA and the League start fighting but end up as allies.  They team up to fight the schemes of the Injustice Guild. But they cannot catch a break the villains get away and Flash and Black Siren are captured.  Things are not what they seem. John is getting visions of a post-apocalyptic world. They keep seeing the same citizens. Then Hawkgirl finds the graves of the JGA members. Green Lantern is  unwilling to believe it at first. They quickly find that the world is a facade. The junior Guild member, Ray, is not actually a boy. He is a mutated telepath.  The world was the victim of a nuclear war. The Guild died in battle. But Ray recreated a golden age world with his childhood heroes. They fight a never-ending battle for Ray's amusement. After Green Lantern and Hawkgirl confront him he begins to attack the Guild and the League. The Guild give their lives to overpower Ray and the illusion is broken.  The real people promise to rebuild. John powers up a portal made by Tom Turbine to transport them back to their reality.   Contact Information: If you want to join in the discussion, you can submit feedback via email to TomorrowsLegendsPodcast@gmail.com or at at https://www.speakpipe.com/TomorrowsLegends . Continuing the mission of The Fire & Water Network show Who's Who – The Definitive Podcast of the DC Universe where it left off in 1992, DC Secret Files host Diabolu Frank will be joined by rotating guests as they look at individual characters and concepts from the publication history of DC Comics, home of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. This will be done chiefly through the company's Secret Files & Origins special publications, which featured 1-2 page brief encyclopedia entries coupled with art featuring a given subject. We'll talk about the property, the featured art, and also take a quick look at short stories that were paired with the entries. While the core focus will be on “modern age” tales from after the universe-shaking 1985 event maxi-series Crisis on Infinite Earths until the end of that continuity in 2011, the first year of shows will feature looks at the initial 50 years of DC, going back to prehistory, Ancient Egypt, the Wild West, the World Wars, and as far beyond as the 30th Century.Directions and art spotlights for each monthly episode can be found on the Rolled Spine Podcasts blog. The show will launch on April 2, 2025, as part of the multimedia crossover JSApril – Celebrating 85 years of the world's first and greatest superhero team! Back in 1940, eight sensational heroes united to create the world's very first superhero team – the Justice Society of America! This April, we're gathering podcasters and bloggers from around the globe for a month-long celebration! Spoilers coming your way via reddit.com/r/LanternsTVSeries that might have plot details for the entirety of Season 1 of Lanterns. EPISODE 1: The episode is bookended with flash-forwards of John Stewart and Hal Jordan being interrogated by strange, alien voices in dark, unearthly rooms. They explain how they met. The main story is set in modern day USA. In a town called Hope Springs in Iowa, an elderly man is murdered during a robbery. The murderer steals a glowing green lantern and a green ring. There are visual hints that the old man once had some connection to the Justice Society of America, a group of superheroes active in the 1950s. It feels vaguely Watchmen-ish. The next morning we meet Hal Jordan, flying a fighter jet high enough to see the stars. He wakes up and it's a dream, he's living as a drifter bumming it across the country kind of like he was in the 90s comics. He's got the white temples and is way more angsty/jaded than Ryan Reynolds‘ Hal. He DOES NOT have his ring, but still has a heroic streak that shows when he stops a gas station robbery. He moves on before the police can find him. Meanwhile the sheriff of Hope Springs, Kerrie Kane, investigates the murder from the opening scene. GL John Stewart arrives. Sheriff Kerrie is surprised to see him, saying she knew the previous Green Lantern and he wasn't black. John states that he's new. John initially thinks investigating a small-time murder in bumfuck nowhere is below his pay grade, until he finds out who the murder victim was: Golden Age GL Alan Scott. John picks up an energy signature at the crime scene using his ring. Hal arrives in town shortly after, and uses the last of his money to purchase a few hours flying a prop plane. It makes him happy, but he realizes he needs a job. Hal approaches Sheriff Kerrie. Apparently they once had a relationship in the past, back when Hal was Green Lantern. Kane isn't particularly happy to see him, since she now has a husband and children. However, she sees Hal is down on his luck and lets him have a job as a janitor at the police station. While working, Hal sees John visit with Kane as GL. John has no idea who Hal is (he's mentioned he “never knew the guy” who owned the ring before him). John works on the case, flying all across the state scanning for the energy signature from the murder scene. Though he takes his job as GL seriously, he's very inexperienced. He finds a lead on the signature and alerts Sheriff Kerrie before investigating. Hal, wanting a piece of the action, sneaks off after the sheriff. On the ranch, John is ambushed by shape-shifting aliens posing as a family of ranchers. They're freaky, amorphous flesh blob things that meld together. John's inexperience comes to bite him, as he forgot to charge his ring. It gets pulled off by the aliens before John can recharge it with his summoned lantern. Sheriff Kerrie arrives and saves John, but both of them get cornered until Hal comes to the rescue. He juices up John's ring and uses it to deal with the shape shifters, and John is amazed to realize that Hal was his predecessor all along. END EPISODE 1

I recently got the chance to speak with All-Star writer Geoff Johns, and the only thing harder than keeping my composure in the conversation is trying to summarize it for the show notes. It's probably best you just listen. About Geoff Johns:Geoff Johns is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling writer, film and television producer, showrunner, and entrepreneur known for re-imagining superheroes and other iconic mythologies, past and present. Johns is best known for his work on properties such as Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Flash, Superman, Batman, Justice Society of America, and most recently, the creator-owned hit series GEIGER, currently being adapted for television at Paramount.Since the beginning of his creative career, Johns' hallmark has been writing heroic and inclusive characters, including teenage hero Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl, inspired by his real-life late sister; the Shazam Family, which he re-imagined into a diverse modern family of today; and the first Arab-American Green Lantern, Simon Baz, as well as the explosive multi-colored Lantern mythology that defined his decade-long bestselling Green Lantern run, among many, many others.Johns' most recognized work in television is the critically acclaimed “Stargirl” series which he created and ran. Some of his film credits include “Wonder Woman” (executive producer), “Wonder Woman 1984” (also co-writer), “Aquaman” (also story) and “Shazam!” (executive producer), based on his graphic novel with longtime collaborator and modern legendary artist, Gary Frank. In 2023, Johns co-founded GHOST MACHINE, the first-of-its-kind creator-owned company. This groundbreaking collective includes some of the industry's most legendary writers and artists, disrupting the old industry model by giving ownership to its creators, and paving the way for them to retain creative control and financial participation.Born in Detroit to a Lebanese father, Johns was honored with his own permanent section at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
