David McKnight looks at what happened when NASCAR legend Kyle Busch reportedly lost $8+ million in what was supposed to be a tax-free retirement plan. The plan Busch relied on was built around an indexed universal life insurance policy. According to Kyle and Samantha Busch's lawsuit, they paid more than $10.4M into several IUL policies issued by Pacific Life Insurance between 2018 and 2022. While these policies were pitched as a safe, self-funding, tax-free retirement plan, things didn't go as promised… Poor design, unrealistic expectations, a delayed 1035 exchange, and poor oversight are the key reasons why the Busch's retirement plan ended up belly up. "If you're going to do a 1035 exchange, make sure you do it at the start of the policy, not years into it", warns David. David goes over the lessons that can be drawn from the Busch's case. For instance, you should never enter into a contract that you don't understand, nor should you do an IUL if you can't overfund it from day one. David believes that you shouldn't rely on the IUL alone… In his opinion, the Busch case is a cautionary tale about what happens when one strategy is positioned as a silver bullet retirement solution. In a balanced, comprehensive approach to tax-free retirement, which includes Roth IRAs, Roth 401(k)s, and Roth conversions, the IUL's purpose is not to carry the whole load, but rather to act as a shock absorber. A recent Ernst & Young study demonstrated that a retirement income strategy that incorporates IUL provides far more income than a strategy that calls for investments alone. David shares a few tips on how to avoid the IUL trap that the Busches unfortunately fell into. The Beatles produced five films during their time together: A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, and Let It Be. Some were cinematic successes, and some were not, but―along with subsequent reissues, bonus material, and Peter Jackson's The Beatles: Get Back, a documentary companion to Let It Be―they comprise an endlessly fascinating document of key phases in the group's career. In this comprehensive deep-dive into the band's movies, author and longtime music journalist Steve Matteo follows the origins, filming, and often frenzied fan reception of projects from the 1964 premiere of A Hard Day's Night through 1970's Let It Be to the release of Get Back in 2022. Matteo explores the production process, original theatrical film releases, subsequent VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray releases, and bonus materials, along with the US and UK soundtracks. In addition to copious anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details, he also places these films in their larger context, a period of unprecedented artistic and commercial innovation in British and world cinema. Filled with stories and insights that will satisfy collectors, buffs, and casual fans alike, this is the definitive account of an underappreciated part of the Beatles' creative output. "Reading is Funktamental" is a monthly one-hour show about great books written about music and music-makers. The lights drop in Atlanta and Paul McCartney steps into a room full of memory—and invention. We unpack how an icon in his eighties still delivers a two-hour-forty marathon by leaning on tight harmonies, a punchy horn section, and the kind of live tech that lets Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite explode off a modern stage. The show's emotional peak arrives when Paul sings I've Got a Feeling with John via Get Back footage, a moment that proves technology can connect past and present without cheapening either one. From there we chase the thread of discovery. Remember when The Doors felt brand new again in 1980? A radio deep dive, Apocalypse Now, and a greatest hits record turned Hello, I Love You and Riders on the Storm into fresh obsessions for a new generation. We map that rush forward and backward: how L.A. Woman and Morrison Hotel still punch, how Mr. Mojo Risin' became every teenager's riddle. Along the way, we decode the stories behind The Rolling Stones' Get Off of My Cloud and Neil Diamond's Cracklin' Rosie, and how fame, loneliness, and late-night singalongs sneak into pop myth. Then we give American Beauty the close listen it deserves. From Box of Rain's tenderness to Ripple's campfire wisdom and Truckin's road-scarred grin, we talk sequencing, sunshine daydream codas, and the tradition behind I Know You Rider. We round out the tour with U2's Boy—lean, urgent, and still startling—and a Ramones reappraisal that finds great songs beneath Phil Spector's glossy wall. Through it all, one idea keeps returning: artists adapt, listeners evolve, and the best songs keep meeting us where we are.If that resonates, hit play, follow the show, and share it with a friend who loves live music and music history. Leave a review to tell us which song hit you differently this time—we'll feature our favorite takes on a future episode.Send us a one-way message. We can't answer you back directly, but it could be part of a future Music In My Shoes Mailbag!!!

Former champion jockey Richard Dunwoody joins me to talk about how photography has become a part of his life after racing, and there are questions about the sport that defined him, too. A three-time Champion Jockey in the UK, Richard won two Grand Nationals and a Cheltenham Gold Cup on the legendary Desert Orchid. He helped define jump racing in Britain and Ireland during one of its most competitive eras. But that was only chapter one. After stepping out of the weighing room, Richard set out on endurance rides across South America and took on challenges that carried him far beyond the racecourse. Now, he travels with a camera, chasing stories in places a long way from grandstands and bookmakers. In this conversation, we talk about photography, adventure, and the discipline that links both worlds, plus what happens when the noise of competition finally stops. Also in the show, Lee Cobbs writes about retracing his roots and finding new angles in a familiar town, Arran Carter-Cheetham shares stories from his photographic adventures that took him halfway round the world to the so-called "Venice of the East," and on that note, I have news about a photographic retreat to the real Venice! Christopher Kincaid reckons he might just live in the best place in the world, and Matties Wesche is filming tandem parachute jumps from 10,000 feet. Links to all guests and features will be on the show page, my sincere thanks to our Extra Milers, without whom we wouldn't be walking each week and Arthelper.ai, giving photographers smart tools to plan, promote, and manage your creative projects more easily. David McKnight focuses on three of the biggest names in personal finance – Dave Ramsey, Suze Orman, and Ken Fisher – and why you should be careful with following their advice. David emphasizes that anyone trying to wring the most efficiency out of their retirement savings should focus on advice that's backed by math… not soundbites. While David Ramsey is the right person for people who are making less than they are spending, the same can't be said for his retirement planning advice. For instance, he claims that 100% of cash value life insurance sucks 100% of the time. For David, whenever someone gives you advice that claims it should be applied 100% of the time, you should run the other way! Remember: there's no financial strategy that works for everyone all the time. According to an Ernst & Young study, by contributing 30% of your retirement savings to an IUL, you'll dramatically increase your income in retirement over a stock market investing alone. Citing E&Y, David explains an approach that shields you from the sequence of returns risk and that has a 95% chance of your money lasting as long as you do. David points out that most Americans don't have thousands of dollars lying around in savings accounts just to pay the taxes on a Roth conversion… David sees Dave Ramsey as someone who gives basic advice for people with basic problems and whose advice could potentially be catastrophic if you want to shield your retirement from higher taxes. When it comes to Suze Orman, David looks at her recent advice of keeping 3-5 years worth of living expenses in an emergency fund in retirement. While Orman is trying to safeguard against sequence of returns risk, she seems to be forgetting about inflation eating away at your purchasing power. As David shares his dislike of Orman's advice, he touches upon a resource that can double your sustainable withdrawal rate from 4 to as high as 8%. Ken Fisher, on the other hand, has become the face of the "anti-annuity crusade". The problem with Fisher's approach? He's primarily referring to variable annuities, completely disregarding fixed indexed annuities (which are a totally different animal). David discusses how replacing bonds with fixed annuities "can increase your returns, lower your risks, and give you a better outcome over time." Beware of financial gurus saying "I hate annuities", "100% of life insurance sucks 100% of the time", or "never pay taxes from your IRA"! In his latest book The Guru Gap, David takes a deep dive into the flawed logic of financial gurus, and gives the full story with the math, the context, and the strategies they conveniently leave out in their content and speeches. Mentioned in this episode: David's new book, available now for pre-order: The Secret Order of Millionaires David's national bestselling book: The Guru Gap: How America's Financial Gurus Are Leading You Astray, and How to Get Back on Track Tax-Free Income for Life: A Step-by-Step Plan for a Secure Retirement by David McKnight DavidMcKnight.com DavidMcKnightBooks.com PowerOfZero.com (free video series) @mcknightandco on Twitter @davidcmcknight on Instagram David McKnight on YouTube Get David's Tax-free Tool Kit at taxfreetoolkit.com Dave Ramsey Suze Orman Ken Fisher Ernst & Young

This episode kicks off the way so many of our best ones do: with a pre-show conversation that turned into the real show. What started as a casual check-in about 75 Hard, restarts, and setbacks quickly turned into a deep dive on purpose, accountability, and the power of having people who pull you off the sidelines when it's easier to stay there. From mental toughness and discipline to rediscovering your mission and living on purpose, this one is raw, real, and packed with reminders that growth happens when you decide to get back in the game.Top 5 Takeaways from This Episode:Restarting is harder than starting. It's easy to stop when life gets messy — but the real challenge comes in finding the courage to begin again. The longer you wait, the louder the excuses get.Accountability changes everything. When you're surrounded by people who challenge you, support you, and pull you back into the game, it becomes nearly impossible to stay stuck on the sidelines.Purpose requires action. Your purpose isn't what you write on paper — it's what shows up in your daily decisions, habits, and the impact you have on others. Purpose without action is just a wish.Discipline builds freedom. 75 Hard isn't just about workouts or water — it's about creating structure, self-control, and the kind of consistency that leads to real freedom and confidence.Joy lives in alignment. When you're living on purpose and in sync with your mission, life feels fuller. The peace, fulfillment, and joy that come from that alignment make the hard work worth it.One Truth:You'll never find your purpose sitting on the sidelines — you discover it when you get back in the game and start moving forward, even when it's hard.

David McKnight compares the approach of some of the biggest names in personal finance: Suze Orman, and William "Bill" Bengen (the man who invented the 4% Rule). In a recent interview covered by MSN, Suze Orman declared flat out that the 4% Rule is dead since markets are volatile, interest rates fluctuate, and people are living longer. David shares the "origin story" of how the 4% Rule came to be – and its creator Bill Bengen. Interviewed by MSN, Bengen updated his research and concluded that, based on current data, a 4.7% withdrawal rate is now sustainable. David compares Orman's views on the 4% Rule with those of Bengen. As explained by David, when you purchase a guaranteed lifetime income annuity, you're transferring a portion of your retirement savings to an insurance company in exchange for a guaranteed paycheck for life. Remember: not all annuities are created equal – that's why you need to understand fees, credit ratings, inflation writers and surrender periods. Top Stories for October 28th Publish Date: October 28th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, October 28th and Happy Birthday to Julia Roberts I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. SPARC, Motel to Home help homeless single-parent families get back into housing E-SPLOST headlines countywide ballot — but faces challenges Gwinnett police chief pushes back in Peachtree Corners debate All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: KIA Mall Of Georgia STORY 1: SPARC, Motel to Home help homeless single-parent families get back into housing Life hit Faith Busano like a freight train. “The day we moved into our last apartment, I lost my job,” she said. Originally from California, Faith, 32, had bounced from Michigan to Georgia, trying to find stability for herself and her two daughters, 3-year-old Love and 13-year-old Harmoni. But things kept falling apart. Family couldn’t help. The apartment didn’t work out. And when the job disappeared, so did their home. They ended up in an extended-stay motel—what was supposed to be a temporary fix. But weeks turned into months, and the motel became a trap. Her toddler’s energy was endless, her teen was struggling with mental health, and Faith herself was barely holding on. She worked customer service, drove for DoorDash, styled hair—anything to scrape by. But the grind was relentless. Then, one day, a flier changed everything. The motel was handing out groceries, and someone slipped her information about SPARC’s Motel to Home program. It felt like a lifeline. SPARC, led by Joy Monroe, helps families like Faith’s escape the cycle of extended-stay living. The program covers deposits, first month’s rent, and helps families transition into stable housing. But it’s not easy—there are requirements, and families have to actively work toward qualifying. Faith did the work. She found an apartment within her budget, got approved, and finally moved in. Monroe, who started SPARC to support single moms like herself, knows the struggle all too well. Faith is still rebuilding—working toward her medical assistant certification, dreaming of opening her own business someday. But for now, she’s just grateful to have a place to call home. STORY 2: E-SPLOST headlines countywide ballot — but faces challenges This fall, Gwinnett voters have plenty to decide, but nothing’s stirring the pot quite like the E-SPLOST referendum. Here’s the deal: Gwinnett County Public Schools and Buford City Schools want to extend the 1% sales tax for another six years, aiming to rake in $1.47 billion—most of it ($1.44 billion) for GCPS. The money would go toward maintaining aging schools (average age: 24 years), fixing roofs, replacing HVAC systems, and even funding a new career and technical education center. Safety upgrades and Chromebooks? Also on the list. Supporters say it’s essential. Opponents? They’re calling out wasteful spending—like a $7 million church purchase with no clear plan. Turnout’s been dismal so far—just 1.7% of voters have shown up. Maybe it’s the confusion of needing multiple ballots in some areas. Or maybe people just aren’t paying attention. Either way, the stakes are high. STORY 3: Gwinnett police chief pushes back in Peachtree Corners debate Nancy McGregor doesn’t see the point. The Peachtree Corners resident has been a supporter of the Gwinnett County Police Department for years, and after attending a community meeting with Police Chief J.D. McClure, she’s even more convinced: the city doesn’t need its own police force. “When you’ve got an elite department like Gwinnett’s—with their training, resources, and expertise—why would we try to replicate that?” McGregor said. The meeting, held at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, was the first time residents heard directly from county police about the city’s proposal to break away and form its own department. McClure didn’t hold back. Crime in Peachtree Corners? Down across the board. Robberies dropped 40% this year, assaults 41%, and commercial burglaries a staggering 66%. But it’s not just about crime stats. McClure laid out what the city would lose: specialized units like SWAT, K9, and Behavioral Health, plus the county’s ability to surge officers during emergencies. Residents like Paul La Motte left the meeting impressed. “I’ve always been against the idea of a city police department, but now? I’m even more confident Gwinnett’s got this.” McGregor agreed. “Hearing their side just confirmed it for me. They’re doing a great job.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. KG decided to plant roots in the U.S., and they picked Gwinnett County as their home base. Fast forward 25 years, and their subsidiary, maierAMERICA, is still here—thriving, growing, and making waves in the Norcross area. This week, the company celebrated two big milestones: 25 years in Gwinnett and 100 years since its parent company’s founding. The company’s growth has been impressive. Just last year, they tripled their space to 20,500 square feet. Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson marked the occasion with a proclamation, calling maierAMERICA’s success a testament to the county’s role as a hub for international business. German Consul General Melanie Moltmann and other officials echoed the sentiment, celebrating the deep ties between Germany and the U.S. STORY 5: Georgia Supreme Court upholds conviction from fatal DUI in Gwinnett Victor Allen Smith’s conviction is sticking. The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously upheld the 2023 verdict that found Smith, 59, guilty of killing 22-year-old Hugo Natanael Martinez while fleeing a state trooper in Gwinnett County. Smith, who was sentenced to life in prison, had argued that evidence about his 18-year license suspension unfairly swayed the jury. But the court didn’t buy it, ruling the evidence against him was overwhelming. Back in March 2022, Smith was clocked speeding over 80 mph on I-85—then hit 120 mph trying to outrun the trooper. Martinez, standing by his truck on the shoulder, sadly never stood a chance. Smith struck him, sending him over a retaining wall. STORY 6: ART BEAT: Nocross Gallery's 'Shapes' fundraiser features artists in a friendly bidding war The bidding’s still going strong at Norcross Gallery and Studios! Their annual fundraiser, “Norcross Shapes,” runs through Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., and it’s a must-see (and bid) event. This month-long auction, which kicked off Oct. 5, supports everything from artist programs and community outreach to high school exhibitions and ongoing classes. The best part? You can either outbid the competition or pay the “full price” to snag your favorite piece on the spot. The artwork is as diverse as it gets—paintings, pottery, jewelry, even gift baskets. And the stories behind the pieces? Just as colorful. This year’s auction has no size limits, so expect everything from tiny treasures to statement pieces. Swing by the gallery at 116 Carlyle Street in downtown Norcross, open Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don’t miss it! STORY 7: Gladiators Legend: ECHL Hall of Famer Cam Brown Dies at 56 When the Gwinnett Gladiators needed a leader back in 2003, they found one in Cam Brown. Fresh out of retirement, the Canadian left winger joined the brand-new Duluth-based team, bringing grit, heart, and a lifetime of hockey experience. Over three seasons, he became the face of the franchise, leading them to a Kelly Cup Final and scoring the first goal in team history. On Sunday, fans and friends were devastated to learn Brown had passed away at just 56, reportedly in a motorcycle accident. Brown’s No. 44 jersey hangs in the rafters, a permanent reminder of his impact. He’s the only Gladiator in the ECHL Hall of Fame, a league he helped shape with 789 games, 206 goals, and 2,425 penalty minutes. Old school? Absolutely. But that’s what made him special. Brown leaves behind his wife, two children, and a legacy that stretches far beyond the rink. Even when we mess up, God isn't done with us. In this episode of Talk'N Truth, Dan Whitney (aka Larry the Cable Guy), Pastor Bryan Clark, and comedian Reno Collier dive deep into 2 Samuel 14—the story of King David's paralyzed leadership, his silence after failure, and the grace that calls us back into the game. David went from a fearless giant-killer to a hesitant, broken man afraid to act. But God wasn't finished with him—and He isn't finished with you either. The crew discusses what it looks like to feel “stuck on the B team,” how guilt and shame can hold believers back, and why God's grace is a recall notice for every follower of Jesus to get back on the field. They also unpack how Peter's restoration after denying Christ shows that repentance isn't the end—it's the beginning of purpose renewed. Whether you're weighed down by regret, battling spiritual fatigue, or longing for a comeback in your faith, this real-talk conversation reminds you: sin doesn't disqualify you. God's grace requalifies you.

Then, Nick, Justin and Sam recap the Leafs' back-to-back against the Buffalo Sabres, Jake McCabe's controversial hit, the 3rd line's emergence, Nick Robertson on the top line, John Tavares' consistency, the comparisons between the club's performance heading into November from 2024 and this season, and Craig Berube's comments on Joseph Woll's return-to-play process. So, imagine your employer/contractor announced it will stop paying you and put you on a temporary furlough for an undetermined period. Although you understood that such a draconian action was possible, it must have come as a real shock, a financial blow that you're still living through. Twelve million of our fellow citizens are currently living through just such an economic crisis. Ironically, it's the most secure employer of all, the US Government, that is inflicting this pain on its own workers and contractors.

David McKnight discusses one of the most destructive pieces of retirement advice he has ever heard: that you should never do a Roth conversion in retirement or within five years of retiring. Dave Ramsey believes you should forego doing a Roth conversion if you're within five years of retirement or are already retired – because of the so-called Five-Year Rule. The problem with this approach, according to David, is that Ramsey is misinterpreting what that rule actually means, in addition to confusing multiple rules and applying them to the wrong people. Ramsey's advice, continues David, encourages retirees to make choices that could cost them a fortune and taxes over time. The bigger issue, however, is the fact that Ramsey is focusing on the wrong thing – what he should really focus on is where tax rates are headed in the future. The current historically low tax rates won't last, as the U.S. national debt is on track to hit $63 trillion by 2035. If that were to happen, the U.S. Congress won't have the luxury of keeping tax rates low anymore. According to former Comptroller General David Walker, tax rates will likely need to double just to keep the Government solvent. A recent Penn Wharton study found that if the U.S. doesn't get its house in order by 2040, no combination of raising taxes or reducing spending will arrest the financial collapse of the nation. David warns that if you're still contributing to or sitting on a big tax-deferred nest egg like a 401(k) or IRA, you're setting yourself up to pay massive taxes in the future. Remember: 2035 is your Roth conversion deadline. David goes through his suggested strategies to avoid paying higher tax rates and potential penalties in the future. Something good to keep in mind is that if you're in the 0% tax bracket and tax rates double, two times zero is still zero… David sees Dave Ramsey as the go-to expert for get-out-of-debt advice, not retirement planning strategy.
