The loneliness that comes with being seen as strong. The quiet burnout of carrying everyone else while secretly wishing someone would just carry something for you. Should I Do a Roth Conversion in my 60s?

The Power Of Zero Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2026 7:54

Today's episode of The Power of Zero Show revolves around a question host David McKnight gets asked all the time: "Should I still be doing Roth conversions in my 60s, even if I'm already retired?" In short, David believes that you should not only do a Roth conversion in your 60s, it's actually one of the most optimal times in your entire life to do it. When doing a Roth conversion, you're choosing to pay the IRS its portion of your IRA now, on your terms, instead of paying it a much larger portion later, on their terms. That's why Roth conversions don't only make sense for younger people but for retired folks too. Remember: with Roth conversions, you're not catching up because you're not behind. You're locking in a lower tax rate today to avoid a much higher tax rate down the road. David explains why the so-called "retirement income valley" is a strategically perfect time to do a Roth conversion. The 32% tax bracket is David's least favorite tax bracket, which he recommends avoiding at all costs when doing Roth conversions. David touches upon the Penn Wharton Budget Model and why 2040, or so, will be the do-or-die date for these matters. What if you don't have extra cash sitting around? Would you still need to pay the taxes on your Roth conversion out of pocket? David illustrates what you can do if you find yourself in that situation. David goes over why you should want to get as much of your IRA into Roth as you possibly can – and what's the beauty of doing that in your 60s.     Mentioned in this episode: David's new book: The Secret Order of Millionaires David's national bestselling book: The Guru Gap: How America's Financial Gurus Are Leading You Astray, and How to Get Back on Track Tax-Free Income for Life: A Step-by-Step Plan for a Secure Retirement by David McKnight DavidMcKnight.com DavidMcKnightBooks.com PowerOfZero.com (free video series) @mcknightandco on Twitter  @davidcmcknight on Instagram David McKnight on YouTube Get David's Tax-free Tool Kit at taxfreetoolkit.com Congressional Budget Office Penn Wharton Budget Model

Frank shares how curiosity and persistence led him from New York to California to the Mississippi Delta, and why following your own path often looks nothing like what the world expects of you.   Frank talks openly about what it took to leave a life that looked successful on the outside but felt empty on the inside, how he built meaningful community in a place he wasn't even from, and why his definition of success has nothing to do with a salary anymore.   Watch the Someone Gets Me Podcast - Following Curiosity Out of Convention with Frank McKenna   Did you enjoy this episode? What does it look like to follow God… when everything in your life is falling apart? In this powerful Memorial Day episode and tribute, Dr. Zach Clinton sits down backstage at the most recent Ignite Men’s Impact Weekend with Green Beret veteran, Purple Heart recipient, Silver & Bronze Star Medalist, and warrior, John Wayne Walding, a man whose life is a living testimony of faith, courage, and resilience under fire. John Wayne served 12 years in the U.S. Army, including 7 years in the elite 3rd Special Forces Group. During the Battle of Shok Valley on April 6, 2008, he was struck by sniper fire that nearly severed his leg. In a moment that defines both grit and resolve, he applied a tourniquet and kept fighting alongside his team for hours. But this story isn’t just about what happened on the battlefield. It’s about what happened after. John Wayne opens up about the long road of recovery, becoming a below-the-knee amputee, and the internal battles many don’t see: mental health struggles, challenges in marriage, and the quiet weight that so many men carry but rarely talk about. Throughout it all, one truth stands out: faith is not tested in comfort; it’s revealed in the fire. We talk about what it means to trust God in suffering, to ask for strength instead of an easier life, and how pain, when surrendered, can become a tool for growth rather than an excuse for passivity. This conversation is also a direct challenge to men: to reject passivity, to embrace responsibility, to live with courage, humility, and intentionality, and to understand that real strength includes the willingness to be vulnerable and ask for help. John Wayne’s life reminds us that being a godly man isn’t about perfection…it’s about perseverance, surrender, and service. If you’re walking through pain, feeling stuck, or tempted to check out, this episode will meet you there… and call you forward.Links: Visit John Wayne’s Website: https://www.johnwaynewalding.com/ Watch John Wayne on The Resilient Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbnSPU-NVTg Book John Wayne to Speak: https://www.gdaspeakers.com/speaker/john-wayne-walding/ Struggling with your Suffering? Touring and performing live represented a challenge to The Beatles during their years of rapid artistic growth. Being a successful recording act necessitated touring to maintain one's status and to sell records, but when the infrastructure of the day was insufficient to support both the music they were making as well as serve the high demand for tickets in every corner of the country, the strain became too great. Still, they labored to find an alternative, first with an album that would “go on tour” (Sgt. Pepper) and later with the concept of a tightly-controlled live situation that facilitated the audience-artist interaction on a manageable scale (the “Get Back” project). My returning guest Glenn Greenberg has just published a bookazine on the three North American tours, Beatles in America: The Touring Years. See link below. We discuss the pros and cons of touring as well as The Beatles' efforts to move to an alternative path (and the what ifs). On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, we examine two major forces reshaping the profession: the unfinished business of pharmacist provider status and the legal landscape around direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical distribution. In part one, Erik Abel, PharmD, MBA, discusses his May 2026 analysis, “So Pharmacists Want to Be a Provider: Where the Profession Lost Its Way and Perhaps a Path to Get Back.” Abel argues that pharmacy's provider-status challenge is not a lack of clinical evidence, but a lack of operational infrastructure: credentialing, payer contracting, revenue cycle management, interoperability, and scalable business models. In part two, Darshan Kulkarni, PharmD, Esq., joins the show to discuss direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical distribution, legal risk, regulatory scrutiny, telehealth-linked prescribing, manufacturer strategy, and what pharmacists need to understand as drug distribution moves closer to the patient. This week in pharmacy news, Pittsburgh-area pharmacies continue to face uneven access to Adderall and other ADHD medications, years after the FDA first identified shortages in 2022. Patients are still calling multiple pharmacies, switching medications, rationing doses, or going without treatment as availability varies by dosage, formulation, manufacturer, and wholesaler. Pharmacists are also using medication therapy management to protect older adults from preventable medication-related harm. MTM reviews can identify risky prescriptions and OTC products, including diphenhydramine, duplicate therapies, drug interactions, and long-term proton pump inhibitor use that may need reassessment. In 340B news, CVS Health is facing federal lawsuits from major health systems alleging CVS Specialty and WellPartner improperly retained approximately $250 million in savings that should have gone back to covered entities. The litigation adds pressure to debates over PBM integration, contract pharmacy arrangements, and 340B transparency. On Capitol Hill, lawmakers are pressing the Department of Defense to commit to annual audits of the TRICARE pharmacy contract as concerns continue around PBM conflicts of interest, reimbursement practices, network adequacy, and access for independent and community pharmacies.

There's a sentence I hear mortgage brokers say all the time, and it sounds polite, professional, and totally harmless. It's not. In this episode, I break down why saying “get back to me when you're ready” is one of the most expensive things you can say to a lead, what it reveals about your mindset, and the better question to ask instead. If your follow-up feels awkward or you're losing leads you should be converting, this will help. In this episode, I cover: Why This Sentence Costs You Sales - Handing the lead the serve makes your follow-up weaker and gives away control of the conversation. How Story Drives Results - The story you tell yourself about a lead shapes your emotions, your actions, and ultimately your results. The Timeline Question - One simple question can eliminate bad assumptions and make your follow-up much easier. Why Optimism Pays - The brokers who win usually have a better story in their head before they ever pick up the phone. Never say, “Get back to me when you're ready.” Ask about timeline, keep the serve, and don't let a bad story ruin a good lead Follow me on Instagram: www.instagram.com/scottpeckford/ I Love Mortgage Brokering: www.ilovemortgagebrokering.com Find out more about BRX Mortgage: www.whybrx.com Subscribe to my email list, Peckford's Playbook Join the Mortgage Mindset Daily Gamify your prospecting with the 10@10 App I Love Mortgage Brokering is in partnership with Ownwell. The Power Of Zero Show
The 5 Most Common Objections to Roth Conversions (and Why They're Wrong)

The Power Of Zero Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2026 7:40

David McKnight unpacks the five most common objections to Roth conversions and why they simply don't hold up under scrutiny.  The first objection has to do with people not wanting to voluntarily pay taxes before the IRS requires them to. While on the surface, postponing this may sound logical, it ignores a fundamental aspect: the state of the U.S. national debt. It has just passed $39 trillion, and it's slated to grow by $2 trillion per year for the next 10 years, and $3 trillion after that. In other words, interest on the national debt is becoming one of the largest line items in the federal budget.  That means that by refusing to pay taxes today, you're making an insanely risky bet that taxes in the future will be lower than they are right now. All, while your IRA keeps growing and compounding over time. Thus, 10 years from now, not only could tax rates be higher, but your required minimum distributions could be dramatically larger. The second most common objection to Roth conversions revolves around people saying, "If I do Roth conversions, that additional income will force me to pay increasingly higher levels of IRMAA or cause my Social Security to be taxed." David points out that Roth conversions do increase your taxable income, which can trigger those additional expenses during the conversion period.  However, while it's true that you'll pay IRMAA and Social Security taxation in the short term, you'll get rid of those additional expenses for the rest of your life once your conversion period is over. Objection #3 is "There's too much opportunity cost, I won't have time to make up for the taxes I paid".  David explains that, despite sounding sophisticated, this objection is based on a flawed premise. Your IRA is a "business partnership" with the IRS – and every year they get to vote on what percentage of your profits they get to keep. So, when you do a Roth conversion, you're not losing money. You're simply buying out your "silent business partner" at today's historically low tax rates. David highlights that, if taxes double in the future, you'll be glad you bought them out while taxes were still on sale. The fourth objection – "In retirement, I'll be in a lower tax bracket" – is actually one of the most dangerous assumptions in all of retirement planning. People assume that when they retire, their taxes automatically go down. For many Americans, the exact opposite happens, though. Once required minimum distributions kick in, they can force huge amounts of taxable income onto your tax returns. David touches upon an additional issue almost nobody talks about: the so-called widow's penalty. The fifth objection to Roth conversions revolves around the question, "Won't the federal government tax Roth IRAs sometime down the road?" People don't realize that the government loves Roth IRAs because they generate tax revenue today – unlike traditional IRAs, which delay tax revenue. That's why, every time Congress needs money, they tend to pass legislation that makes Roth accounts even more attractive. Remember: Roth conversions are about taking advantage of the tax sale of a lifetime before catastrophic levels of debt force tax rates higher.     Mentioned in this episode: David's new book: The Secret Order of Millionaires David's national bestselling book: The Guru Gap: How America's Financial Gurus Are Leading You Astray, and How to Get Back on Track Tax-Free Income for Life: A Step-by-Step Plan for a Secure Retirement by David McKnight DavidMcKnight.com DavidMcKnightBooks.com PowerOfZero.com (free video series) @mcknightandco on Twitter  @davidcmcknight on Instagram David McKnight on YouTube Get David's Tax-free Tool Kit at taxfreetoolkit.com

Send us Fan MailSo many of us moms are trying to build resilience while living completely disconnected from our own bodies. We push through stress, override exhaustion, ignore anxiety, and keep functioning until our nervous systems finally demand our attention. In this episode of Leadership Parenting, we explore the powerful connection between resilience, nervous system regulation, and body awareness. Drawing from neuroscience research on interoception, emotional regulation, and Polyvagal Theory, we look at how the body detects stress before the mind fully processes it, why chronic overwhelm impacts emotional resilience, and how learning to listen to your body can help you feel calmer, steadier, and more emotionally regulated. I also share practical resilience tools from the Self-Awareness pillar of the Resiliency System, including simple body check-ins, grounding breaths, and awareness practices that help moms reduce stress reactivity, strengthen emotional resilience, and reconnect with themselves in compassionate, sustainable ways. If you'd like to get the show notes for this episode, head to: https://leighgermann.com

In this episode Nancy McLean explores a listener question about whether to remount after a fall, using Dr. Stephen Peters’ research and a review by McBride et al. to explain how equine learning, myelination, and long-term potentiation shape behavior. Nancy explains how automaticity, basal ganglia consolidation, and dopamine-driven rewards can help overwrite fearful responses, and she shares a real-life example of calmly remounting to reinforce positive patterns. Key takeaway: when horse and rider are uninjured, a calm remount and rewarded repetition can help redirect the horse’s neural pathways and prevent lasting fear responses.

The results were pretty eye-opening. Bass that were caught and released near their home range didn't move much at all, but bass that were relocated after being caught traveled miles to get back to where they came from.We talk through how the study worked, what they learned about largemouth bass behavior, how far bass are willing to travel, what this means for tournament fishing, and why bass may be more attached to certain areas than many anglers realize. If you've ever wondered whether bass leave after being caught, how tournament release affects fish movement, or whether bass really have a “home,” this episode is for you.Check out the PowerPoint associated with this study: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1FmPu2X6FxisivqZdCqzzSOC7ECIEFauc/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=113710057446942164849&rtpof=true&sd=trueYou can reach Dylan and Katie here: dylan.hann@agfc.ar.govkatie.thomsen@agfc.ar.gov

How Roth Conversions Affect Social Security Taxes and IRMAA

The Power Of Zero Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2026 8:09

David McKnight dissects a topic that causes a lot of confusion for retirees and pre-retirees: How  Roth conversions affect social security taxation and Medicare premiums (IRMAA). Some warn against Roth conversions in retirement as they can cause your Social Security to become taxable and could also raise your Medicare premiums. While that's true, David believes that the long-term benefits of Roth conversions can far outweigh the temporary, short-term pain they can cause. In order to determine whether your Social Security benefits will be taxed, the IRS tracks the so-called provisional income. If you perform a Roth conversion after you begin collecting Social Security, that additional income can push you above certain thresholds that cause your Social Security benefits to become taxable. Medicare premiums are also influenced by your income through IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount), and they look at your income from two years earlier to determine your IRMAA bracket, Remember: A Roth conversion today could trigger higher Medicare premiums two years from now.  David also explains that Roth withdrawals are not included in provisional income. Not only do they not cause your Social Security benefits to become taxable, but they also do not count towards the income thresholds that trigger higher Medicare premiums. As David points out, with the approach discussed in this episode, you're essentially compressing the tax pain into a few years, so you can enjoy decades of tax-free income later on. The national debt continues to spiral out of control to the point where economists are now predicting massive tax increases within the next 10 to 20 years. If such predictions are accurate, the people who will benefit most are those who have already shifted large portions of their retirement savings into tax-free accounts like Roth IRAs. By performing Roth conversions today – while tax rates are historically low – you're effectively locking in today's tax rates and protecting yourself from the possibility of much higher rates down the road. When talking about Roth conversions affecting Social Security taxation and IRMAA, we have to remember that those impacts are temporary, while the tax-free benefits can last for the rest of your life. David touches upon two reasons why it may make sense to delay taking Social Security while you're performing Roth conversions. Increasing the likelihood that your money will last as long as you do should be the #1 goal of every retirement plan.

Indul a rendes tudósításunk a cannes-i filmfesztiválról, ahol kiderül, hogy melyek azok a filmek, amelyekről a következő egy évben mindenki beszélni fog. Az első nap még laza programmal indult, először A faun labirintusa huszadik évfordulóját ünnepeltük a rendező Guillermo Del Toróval együtt, aki azóta Oscar-díjat is nyert (A víz érintése) és legutóbb a Netflixnek hozott dicsőséget a Frankenstein feldolgozásával, de az egykoron megkérdőjelezhetetlen menőségéből mára sokat veszített.Del Toro egyedi látványvilága és féktelen kreativitása húsz év után is lenyűgözött bennünket és lelkesedése megfelelő indítást adott a 79. cannes-i fesztiválnak. Hozzá hasonló pályát futott be Peter Jackson is, akit a nyitógálán életműdíjjal tüntettek ki, amit A Gyűrűk Ura Frodója, Elijah Wood adott át.
