For adult children who do not live close to their aging parents, the holidays can be a good time to visit to make sure things are good as they seem. In addition to staying connected throughout the year by phone or Zoom calls, a personal visit may give you more information that things are ok – or confirm any suspicions you may have had that there is truly a problem. Many of these suspicions may be around whether or not your parent – or parents – are becoming more forgetful or if they are becoming more frail and unable to keep up with everything independently. Some parents will ask for help if they recognize they are starting to struggle, but many aging parents will not want anyone to know because it means a potential threat to their independence and/or autonomy. The holidays create a time to get together, and it's an excellent opportunity for adult children to check in and see how their aging parents are really doing. In this episode of This Is Getting Old: Moving Towards An Age-Friendly World, I'll share with you four things to look for during your holiday visits this year that may be warning signs that you need to dig deeper to find out what's going on. I will list them in order of least invasive to most invasive…and keep in mind that you do want to respect the dignity, privacy, and autonomy of your loved one – and these need to be investigated from a place of concern – not to undermine your parents. It's a thin line, so listen to your intuition if you suspect a problem and engage your loved one in the process as much as possible. Open communication is always the best approach, and you are looking for differences from the last time you saw them. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Tip #1: Give Them a Hug Clues that things are changing aren't always visible from a distance, so a hug may tell you more without setting off any alarms that you're concerned about. ✔️ Tip #2: What's the Kitchen Look Like? My Mom has always told me that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Think about what the kitchen has always looked like and compare any differences you see. ✔️ Tip #3: Ask About Their Social Life If your parent - or - parents were always socially active – has that changed? And if it has, ask them why? ✔️ Tip #4: Look For Any Visible Mail The mail may offer clues about how your parents are managing their bills or if they are being/ have been scammed. ✔️ How To Catch More Flies With Honey? These four tips are a starting point for a conversation about how things are going at home – how they are really going. Create a safe space to discuss what's concerning you and listen to the answers. One other thing my Mom taught me is that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar…so be kind, observant and listen. Also talk to other people close to them – friends, neighbors or other families who visit regularly. These signs could indicate a bigger problem, but get others involved to learn more about anything that concerns you before making an assumption that there is a memory or thinking problem. ✔️ Additional Resources You can check out some of these related episodes: How To Talk To Someone You Think May Have A Memory Problem: https://melissabphd.com/ep-18-six-tips-for-talking-to-someone-you-think-has-a-memory-problem/ 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's Disease: https://melissabphd.com/ep-17-ten-signs-of-alzheimers-disease/ How Alzheimer's is Diagnosed?: https://melissabphd.com/ep-19-how-is-alzheimers-diagnosed/ If you have questions, comments, or need help, please feel free to drop a one-minute audio or video clip and email it to me at firstname.lastname@example.org, and I will get back to you by recording an answer to your question. If you listened to episode 61 you'll know it was part one of a two part conversation with Lucasfilm and ILM producer Jim Bloom. Jim is a great talker and worked on so many projects, most of them successful but he also talks openly and enthusiastically about some movies that didn't make it into production and about some that did but didn't do much at the box office. In this conversation we talk about his cameos as Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, about the challenges running an effects house and the ups and downs of life as a producer, his views on Return of the Jedi director, the late Richard Marquand and his time working alongside Richard in Yuma and in the Redwood forests of California. We also talk about a little known film that Jim produced called Warning Sign, released in 1983, which he says had some hints towards how a future pandemic may play out. I'm going to track down a DVD or blu ray of that.I hope you enjoy it.Check out the following link if you're interested in supporting the Joe Alves documentary project on Kickstarter - https://www.backerkit.com/call_to_action/1d3f98a4-6576-46f0-9585-6c9fc45ab7e5/landing

Warning Signs of BS Marketing Hosted by: James Patrick This may come as a surprise to you, but I was somewhat of a smartass at the youthful age of 21. I know there's no way you believe that. But the truth is that cynicism is a part of my DNA. There was a girl I had a crush on when I was 21 and I was trying to swoon her. One evening she invited me to join her at a meeting. I accepted under one condition; if this meeting ended up being a pyramid scheme, I would walk out. The meeting was held at the conference room of a small hotel near the university. There was a keynote speaker who everyone revered and seemed to know, but I had no clue who he was. Over the next 35 minutes, he talked about this amazing opportunity to create economic freedom, become an entrepreneur, and to take control of our lives for the first time ever. All we had to do was onboard with this company. I did end up walking out of that meeting and we're going to talk about why. Today, we're going to talk about the bullshit of fantasy marketing. “They only want you to connect with others in the system.” IN THIS EPISODE The problem within our industry and how people are trying to keep up. Revelations James had when he was entrapped. Warning signs. Messages that don't teach strategy or tactics. Behavioral control. The art of deception. The holidays will be here before you know it, and soon you may be visiting family members you haven't seen in a while. When spending time with aging loved ones, it's important to keep your eye out for changes in behavior since the last time you visited. These could be signs of dementia. When it comes to dementia and Alzheimer's, the more informed you are, the better support your family will receive. Senior Program Manager Megan Rowe from the Alzheimer's Association for Dallas and Northeast Texas is here to explain the warning signs and provide tips for helping your loved ones. First, understand the greatest risk factor for dementia is age, but it's not a normal part of aging. You may think of memory loss when it comes to dementia – however, it could impact mood, daily routines, sociability, spatial awareness, balance, problem-solving, and even finances. In fact, financial fraud and exploitation can be an unwanted outcome for those with dementia, making it all the more critical to check on your loved ones. When forgetfulness is involved, those with dementia tend to forget recently learned information, as well as important dates and events (like anniversaries). It's more severe than forgetting where you parked, it's being unable to even retrace your footsteps to find your way to your car. Forgetfulness can even become dangerous when your loved ones rely on daily medications. Early detection is important, so be aware of the signs. That way, your loved one could even become involved in their own future planning and treatment. Ask yourself: - Is your loved one no longer doing something they used to love? For instance, maybe they no longer cook or go to church though they always used to. - Has their routine changed? Maybe they're no longer caring for their hygiene or cleaning their house. - Do they tend to stay home and isolate themselves? - Are the bills getting paid? - How is their balance and spatial awareness? - Are they showing signs of anxiety, anger, or paranoia? If your loved one is exhibiting signs of dementia, it's important to identify a cause / type of dementia, as well as consider further treatment by a specialist. Keep in mind that staying social is also beneficial for living with dementia, not just for your loved one, but for all involved. Support systems are vital; plus, outcomes improve when loved ones stay social and active. Topics discussed: Dementia Alzheimer's disease Signs of dementia / Alzheimer's How to help loved ones with signs of dementia Home for the holidays Treatment / support for dementia Wandering Financial exploitation of seniors Power of attorney Takeaways from this episode: -For one person with dementia, it takes two and a half people to care for them. It's important to have a support network because no one can handle it all alone. -Sometimes other issues can mimic dementia symptoms, so be sure to rule out medication interactions, urinary tract infections, and more. -Understand loved ones may be “covering” for each other. For instance, a spouse may try to cover up the signs of their partner's dementia so people won't worry. -A person with dementia may have a fear of others finding out and distance themselves from their social groups and former routines. However, having a social life improves their quality of life and outcomes. -One sign of dementia is having issues with visual and spatial relationships. Maybe it's difficult to judge the distance of a car, or black-and-white tile may appear like holes in the ground. -Go to alz.org for an appointment checklist for your doctor when determining the dementia diagnosis and treatment plan. One of my favorite sayings is "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." If you've got a toxic culture, it really doesn't matter what your strategic plan or vision is. Your culture always trumps your strategy. That's why this week, we're re-sharing this powerful episode on protecting your culture from toxicity. You see, Builders protect their culture by spotting and getting rid of toxicity before it has a chance to spread. So, it's important to recognize the early warning signs that your culture is turning toxic. If you can nip these in the bud before they have a chance to infect your entire culture and ruin any initiatives you are trying to launch, you can clear the way to achieve your school-wide vision and get everyone on board #LikeABuilder.

Just like the lights on your dashboard can indicate if something is wrong with your car (like low tire pressure or leaking oil), there are indicators in your financial life that might point out that you have a problem that needs to be addressed. You might have watched your parents retire in their early 60s and think that's how it should still be for everyone. Have you considered that you'll likely live much longer than them, you probably don't have the pension that they had, and the costs for your healthcare during your retirement years will dwarf their costs? Don't feel entitled to retirement at a certain age unless you have a plan in place that shows you why and how it's possible. Here is what you will learn in this episode: Do you really know how much it costs to fund your lifestyle? (1:37) Are you focusing more on a specific net worth instead of generating an income in retirement? (7:03) How has the way your parents' handled retirement affected you? (8:46) Check out Donna's new book coming out soon: https://www.widow-wisdom.com/ Get additional financial information: https://sephtonfinancial.com/podcasts/

We're on a 90s Tom Cruise kick! This week, we're relying on Carla's legal knowledge to figure out just how ridiculous the plot of The Firm is. Spoiler alert ... it's SUPER ridiculous. We talk about starting salaries for big firms, what Mitch McDeere's earning potential was, and why basically all the decisions in this film were, to use a legal term, wackadoodle. When someone has a stroke, every second is crucial. The longer it takes to receive treatment, the more likely it is that damage to the brain will occur. "The mantra is 'time is brain,'" explains Dr. James Meschia, a Mayo Clinic neurologist and stroke expert. "The sooner they get treatment, the better patients do."World Stroke Day is recognized each year on Oct. 29. The aim is to teach the public about stroke risk factors and stroke prevention, and to raise awareness about the warning signs of stroke so people recognize when a loved one may be having a stroke and can take action. To recognize the warning signs of stroke, Dr. Meschia says remember the acronym, BE FAST: B stands for balance. Watch for the sudden loss of balance. E stands for eyes. Vision loss in one or both eyes is a warning sign. F stands for face. Facial droop or if the face looks uneven is a sign of stroke. A stands for arm, but it can be sudden weakness of an arm or leg. S stands for speech, including trouble speaking, slurring words or difficulty understanding speech. T stands for time. This represents both noting the time the symptoms occur and reducing the time it takes to receive medical care by calling 911. There are two main types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke happens when there is a loss of blood supply to an area of the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke happens when there is bleeding into the brain when a blood vessel ruptures. Eighty-five percent of all strokes are ischemic.Globally, 1 in 4 adults over 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime, according to the World Stroke Organization. More than 110 million people in the world have experienced stroke, but thanks to the development of clot-busting drugs and procedures to remove clots using a catheter, outcomes for people who have a stroke are improving."The first big treatment revolution happened in the 1990s. And in 1995 we finally closed in on a dose and a time window to give a clot-busting drug known as tissue plasminogen activator or, tPA," says Dr. Meschia. "Then in 2015, the added benefits of mechanical thrombectomy were clearly established. That is where a catheter is inserted, and, under guidance by an X-ray camera, the tip of the catheter is positioned in or near the clot and the clot pulled out. So used in combination or by themselves, thrombolysis and thrombectomy have been major advances in the therapy."After emergency treatment, most stroke survivors go through a rehabilitation program. Stroke care focuses on helping people recover as much function as possible, with the goal of returning to independent living. The impact of the stroke depends on the area of the brain involved and the amount of tissue damaged. If the stroke affected the right side of the brain, movement and sensation on the left side of the body may be affected. If the stroke affected the left side of the brain, movement and sensation on the right side of the body may be affected. Brain damage to the left side of the brain may also cause speech and language disorders.Dr. Meschia encourages stroke victims to realize that the effects of a stroke are worse at the beginning, and that there is hope for rehabilitation."One of the important points with stroke is that it is sudden in onset, and often maximally severe at onset," says Dr. Meschia. "There are some exceptions, but I would say about 9 out of 10 are maximally severe at onset. And then, over the course of one to three months with appropriate rehabilitation — be it speech, physical or occupational therapy, or a combination thereof — patients do rally and improve significantly. And it is one of the things to be aware of because sometimes patients and families can feel like giving up. I think that would be tragic because, at least in the short term, the prognosis is favorable for some level of recovery."Many strokes can be prevented in the first place by minimizing risk factors. Maintaining a healthy body weight, staying physically active and controlling blood pressure reduce the risk of stroke. Other stroke prevention steps include stopping smoking, eating a healthy diet and managing blood sugar levels. On the Q&A podcast, Dr. Meschia discusses stroke prevention, the warning signs of stroke and the latest in stroke treatments.
In this episode, I share more about how to see and properly react to the warning signs than what the actual signs are. When it comes to your health, there are some major warning signs such as high blood pressure or shortness of breath. Minor warning signs happen much more often and usually go unnoticed, for example having a resting heart rate that starts to increase over a short period of time.Seeing the warning signs is one thing, but creating a plan to eliminate them is what leads to long term success. You can visit all of our sponsors at here.Music credit: Ryan The Son, hear more from Ryan The Son on Instagram, YouTube or SpotifyProduction credit: Social Media Cowboys

My guest this week is Dr. Charlotte Markey. Today we are talking about body image and self-worth for our kids, especially those in the tween and teen years. This is an issue that is increasingly on parents' radars, especially as we learn more about the impact of social media on body image and the increasing body image issues for kids post pandemic. It can be a tricky thing for parents and other adults to know how to best support kids in developing a healthy body image and to understand the differing needs that girls and boys may have around this. Charlotte and I will talk through current research on how younger brains are extremely impressionable, perceptions of adolescents, helpful approaches to developing a healthy body image, and how to support those that are struggling, including when professional help may be worth seeking. Dr. Charlotte Markey is a world leading expert in body image research, having studied all things body image, eating behavior and weight management for her entire adult life. She's passionate about understanding what makes us feel good about our bodies, and helping people develop a healthy body image. Charlotte loves to share her body image wisdom with others and is an experienced book author, blogger and professor at Rutgers University. She has created separate resources for girls and boys: The Body Image Book for Girls: Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless and Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys. She currently lives in Pennsylvania with her son, daughter, husband and dog, and for fun, she likes to run, travel and read, but often spends her free time nagging her kids to brush their teeth or remove the cups and dishes from their rooms.
