Today on the GateCrashers podcast we have the pleasure of being joined by writer Tate Brombal, known for his extensive collaborations with James Tynion IV on his Slaughterverse books, including the just launched Fall of the House of Slaughter and Image Comics' Everything Dead & Dying. Over the last couple years, he has made a name for himself as a rising star at DC Comics, first with Elseworlds's title Green Lantern Dark and an ongoing run on Batgirl starring Cassandra Cain, #19 having just been released this week. Along with this, Brombal has recently taken over New Titans, delivering a much-needed fresh take on the beloved DC team. We chat about all this and more in our interview that you can listen to right now! For more info on all of Tate Brombal's books, check out our reviews and solicit texts for all his first issues mentioned above here: Fall of the House of Slaughter by Tate Brombal, James Tynion IV, Werther Dell'Edera, Adriano Turtulici, and Tom Napolitano. As the House of Slaughter's ailing Old Dragon enters his final days, Cecilia Slaughter and the other Heads gather to determine his successor. Deadly ambitions begin to take shape as the House and the Order prepare for a new legacy to begin — and the conflict will no doubt be lethal in this all-new miniseries set in the world of Something is Killing the Children! Can the House of Slaughter survive a new Dragon coming into power? New Titans by Tate Brombal, Sami Basri, Adriano Lucas, and Tom Napolitano. WHO ARE THE NEW TITANS? After helping save the world from yet another world-ending event, the Titans have earned some much-deserved rest. Back in Titans Tower, they're glad to be reunited again... But it almost feels too good to be true. Are these Titans who they claim to be? And if they can't trust each other... can they even trust themselves? Tate Brombal and Sami Basri kick off a brand-new era for the next generation of superheroes! Everything Dead & Dying by Tate Brombal, Jacob Phillips, Pip Martin, and Aditya Bidikar. Everything Dead & Dying follows Jack Chandler, the sole survivor of the zombie apocalypse hunkered down in his rural farming community. But rather than eliminate them, Jack has chosen to continue living alongside the undead — including the husband and adopted daughter he fought so hard to have. But when his town is discovered by outsiders, Jack suddenly becomes the one thing standing in the way of those who hope to kill his family for good. Batgirl by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano. Hold on to your seats, clutch your pearls, and rejoice in celebration because Cassandra Cain is taking center stage in her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades! When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra, Lady Shiva comes to the rescue, and they must put their complicated past aside and work together as mother and daughter to ensure they make it out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as easy as they seem, and Cass must embark on a jaw-dropping, martial-arts filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice... and revenge?! It's a Batgirl book like never before, so join us as we dive into the psyche of one of Gotham's deadliest fighters, while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother. Green Lantern Dark by Tate Brombal, Werther Dell'Edera, Giovanna Niro, and Tom Napolitano. On a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by monsters, the battle between good and evil ended long ago — and evil won. Now darkness prevails as humanity struggles to survive in the corrupted wasteland that remains. Only one hero is said to haunt what's left of our shadowed cities, the one who wields the mystical green flame that could return light to a dark world--The Green Lantern. But she's been missing for years, and on the isolated island of New England, Solomon Grundy's undead army only grows larger and more powerful every night... Celebrated horror artist of smash hit Something is Killing the Children Werther Dell'Edera teams with rising-star writer Tate Brombal (House of Slaughter) to bring you a chilling tale of desperation, hope, and resurrection from the bitter remains of the fan-favorite Tangent Universe!
The Cassandra Cain Podcast is here to talk about the Tate Brombal tale, Batgirl 18, where Cass skips out on her found family's dinner to the Spirit World, where she bumps into and plots with her blood... family. Will Cassandra Cain meet her mother, Lady Shiva, in the Spirit World? Will we discover a new origin about her blood father? Because time moves differently, will Cassandra and company make it home for dinner in Gotham? Jace of The Comic Source is joined by Rocky from Comic Boom! for this week's DC Spotlight as they break down a lighter but still varied week of DC releases. Batman/Superman: World's Finest #50 gets discussed for its Dr. Destiny dream story, Superman's dream Supermobile, and a backup featuring Robin, Supergirl, Batgirl and Jimmy Olsen in a rivalry-fueled mystery. Batman/Static Beyond #5 continues to build around older Static mentoring a younger Batman Beyond while Failsafe and the larger Q-energy conflict move the story forward. Adventures of Superman: Book of El #7 delivers another dense chapter in the House of El saga with Otho-Ra, the future descendants of Superman and the larger science fiction mythology continuing to expand. Batman #8 is a slower setup issue centered on Bruce Wayne's conversation with Alan Scott, the threat of Vandal Savage, and Gotham's mayor Poison Ivy turning the city against Batman and Robin. Absolute Superman #18 stands out with Lois Lane confronting Talia al Ghul over her father's death, Ra's al Ghul showing the effect Superman has had on him, and the issue introducing Absolute versions of John Henry Irons and King Shazam while also hinting at the Phantom Stranger. Poison Ivy #43 continues G. Willow Wilson's character-driven run with Pamela Isley using her position as mayor to go after Gotham's corruption, while also advancing the fallout with Harley Quinn, Janet from HR and the consequences of Bob Venus. Bizarro: Year None #1 offers a different take on Bizarro through a Jimmy Olsen and Perry White focused story that sends them to Bizarro World, with the Daily Planet itself playing into that world's creation. JSA #18 wraps up the Year One material while also including more of the Search for the Spectre backup and its focus on the newer generation of Justice Society characters. Mad About DC #1 serves as a full Mad Magazine-style send-up of DC characters, creators and fandom with multiple standout gags and a tone both hosts found genuinely funny. Batgirl #18 leans deeper into the Spirit World mythology, Cassandra Cain's growing connection to the Wu clan, and the question of whether Lady Shiva is capable of redemption. The episode also includes a rundown of the week's collected editions along with rankings for the books discussed and selections for Book of the Week.

Kelly has become a standout voice in the world of animation, especially within the DC universe. Her work includes multiple animated films and series, where she brings precision, intensity, and emotional depth to her characters. A major highlight is her role as Lady Shiva in Batman: Soul of the Dragon. SAVE 17% ON PLUS
I know there are a lot of superheroes who are orphans and would do anything to have their parents back. Maybe they should talk to Cassandra Cain. That particular Batgirl has a much more trying set of parental relationships. We've read a bunch of stories about her and her dad, the mast assassin David Cain. And while we have read only a couple stories about it, the more interesting relationship is between Cass and her mother, one of the DC Universe's greatest martial artists, Lady Shiva. Abigale Heartbalm joins us to talk about three stories featuring Cass and Shiva. The first is their battle to the death, the second involves some Freaky Friday stuff (although not a mother/daughter swap, which I now want to see) and the first arc of Cassandra's current ongoing series, where things between them reach a much more final conclusion. I am Become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds (Batgirl V.1 #25) Vice Versa (Batgirls Annual 2022, #13) Mother (Batgirl V.6 #1-6) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
The Cassandra Cain Podcast is talking about the final saga of The War of Shadows, where the Batgirl is reminded of what she stands for...and perhaps, everything is back to where we started, save for the life of Lady Shiva and others. Oh, and Cassandra Cain has a new brother. Ok, maybe everything didn't return to the status quo, but you know what we mean. Lady Shiva walks through the world, leaving a trail of bodies behind her. Not a hero, but often not quite a villain, Shiva has developed relationships with many members of the Bat Family: trainer to Tim Drake, rival and sometimes member of the Birds of Prey, mother to Cassandra Cain. Josh Weill joins the show to take on three of these stories. One is one of her earliest modern appearances with Tim Drake, one where she and Black Canary must avenge their fallen sensei and one where she takes command of the League of Shadows and in the end she must face down her own daughter to bring her plan to fruition. We don't know how to feel about violence as sports entertainment, but we cannot deny how much we love stories that center their emotional conflicts inside a ring. With their new series, Black Canary: Best of the Best, Tom King and Ryan Sook join the long tradition of tearing into internal torment by subjecting protagonists to regulated gladiatorial combat. Dinah Lance versus Lady Shiva, let's get ready to rumble. The first issue of the new series arrives in stores Wednesday (11/27). We won't spoil it here, but those pages will reveal some of the motivations for why Dinah, the second-best fighter in the DC universe, would subject herself to the fists of the single-best fighter. It has something to do with the first woman to don the Black Canary mantle - her mother. Yup, this is a Tom King comic, so you know Black Canary: Best of the Best must feature a twisty, prickly core relationship. This week's episode explores why the ring is such a compelling story engine. We discuss how Tom King was initially enticed to place Black Canary alongside other brutal fictional bouts like Rocky, Raging Bull, The Set-Up, The Big Blow, and yeah, Best of the Best. Ryan Sook takes us through his process of understanding the physicality of boxing, wrestling, and MMA while contemplating their bloody nature. And why has it taken King so long to tackle the mother/daughter dynamic? To continue this conversation, follow Tom King on Bluesky, Threads, and Instagram. Follow Ryan Sook on Instagram. Eisner Award nominated comics writer Tate Brombal (Barbalien: Red Planet) returns to the show today to chat with me about his new DC Comics Elseworlds seven issue mini-series Green Lantern Dark. Last June Tate was a guest during our Pride Month coverage where he introduced the world to the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos which he is co-writing with James Tynion, a LGBTQ+ horror-hero coming-of-age series reintroducing us to the classic Universal Monsters creatures through a distinctly queer lens, now on its twelfth issue. We get into his own introduction to the Elseworlds Imprint through his uncle, how new Lantern Rina Mori was developed as a character, and how a chance dinner conversation created the unlikely creative partnership with artist Werther Dell'Edera. It's also been announced that he's taking on the role of writing the new Batgirl series resurrecting Cassandra Cain for her first ongoing solo series in decades with veteran artist Takeshi Miyazawa. I get to hear all about Tate's research for the book that involves watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and other martial arts movies to refresh his skills on scripting fight scenes and how the nucleus of the book will be focused on the relationship between Cassandra and Lady Shiva. At the end, Tate clues me in to one of the best deep dive book options for writer Mary Shelley research and we catch up on where things are with the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. Find Tate on X and Instagram Green Lantern Dark from the publisher On a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by monsters, the battle between good and evil ended long ago--and evil won. It's been a minute since we were joined by Tom King on the show. If you checked the length of this episode then you know we had a LOT to catch up on. Between the last interview and now, Tom has been pretty busy making comics. Not only has he had all of his work at DC but is back to the creator owned world as well. Plus he's a big wig in Hollywood now too so he has been a bit busy. On the episode, Dan and Tom King catch up on all the projects he's had. Our main focuses of the episode are the new series Black Canary: Best of the Best and Archie. But Dan makes sure to try to pull a little bit of everything into the interview with Tom as much as he can. With the focus of Tom King's new Black Canary series, Dan gets to ask about wrestling. Tom drops some wrestling lingo and gets into the face and heel discussion about Canary and Lady Shiva. If you weren't already excited for this upcoming series, then you're going to walk away from this interview ready to pre-order it from your LCS or Tom and I's shop, Third Eye Comics! They also get the chance to talk about Tom's recent one shot at Archie. Tom talks about the impact of Archie Comics on his children, him, and how one of the internets favorite members of the King family, Roxy, got a starring role. We talk about getting to work with the incredible Dan Parent in the Archie style. And if you thought this interview would end without us talking about Trinity and those Super Sons then you'd be dead wrong. We talk a bit about legacy in the DCU universe before focusing on these three. We talk about Damian's Taylor Swift/Black Canary crush, how the reference image for the stadium might be Lincoln Finacial Field in Philly (go birds), and the evolving nature of this new trios dynamic in the DC Universe.
Recently announced by DC Comics, Tom King is teaming up with superstar artist Ryan Sook on a six-issue mini series focused on Black Canary to determine who is the best hand to hand fighter in the DC Universe. From the press release below we can see that her primary foe will be Lady Shiva. It comes as no surprise that Shiva will be the antagonist as she has long been regarded as one of the best fighters in the entirety of the DC Universe. Black Canary on the other hand, is not generally in the top five most formidable fighters if you ask most DC fans. Perhaps if you are only talking about females, her name might be mentioned. I think most DC fans familiar with these characters are much more likely to mention Cassandra Cain or the aforementioned Lady Shiva. The question does remain however, if the assertion of Canary as one of the best hand to hand fighters generates controversy, this series may not be as well-received as some of King's previous out of continuity work. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as bad press, so it is entirely possible that any online discourse about presenting Canary as possible the most formidable fight in the DCU rivaling Lady Shiva, will only have a positive effect on sales. There may be people that pick up the series just to see how the claim that Canary could best Shiva could possible me true. Only time will tell and you can decide for yourself starting on November 27th, when issue #1 hits comic shops.
“The Greatest Pod Reboots DC Comics” is our attempt to explain what we think is not quite optimized in the modern DC Comics universe. Of course, we talk about reimagining the role of “The Trinity” of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman BUT WE ALSO want to make characters like Bronze Tiger, Lady Shiva, and The Question become more important to the fans. DC has so many forgotten characters that need bolstering and so many sections of their universe that need more exploring. We love DC Black Label and Elseworlds but the main universe needs some rejuvenation babay and we have some ideas. Right or wrong we're interesting so fire up the ep baby!! Follow us! Straub's looks, talent and alure charmed the likes of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Felini, Deneuve and more. Felini, in fact, remarked of her, “Someone who burns that bright, dies young.” She was a model, a singer and the muse of designers and artists. To that end, possibly her most recent impression as a muse was on director and writer Gabriel Bauer, who used never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with prominent contemporaries to create the stunning documentary GLOW, which is now available for streaming. Today we talk to Gabriel for an inside look at a diva you will not forget, and the film that immortalizes her. Gabriel is a respected director, author and producer. Her films and scripts include Cada Dia Historia (Every Day History, NIC/CH), Die Bettkönigin (Queen of Bed, CH) and Venus Boyz (CH/DE/USA). She has received national and international awards for her films, and is a member of the European Film Academy EFA and the Swiss Film Academy. Additionally she was Co-founder of ONIX Film and ONFEATURES Film. With co-host Brody Levesque
