We don't know how to feel about violence as sports entertainment, but we cannot deny how much we love stories that center their emotional conflicts inside a ring. With their new series, Black Canary: Best of the Best, Tom King and Ryan Sook join the long tradition of tearing into internal torment by subjecting protagonists to regulated gladiatorial combat. Dinah Lance versus Lady Shiva, let's get ready to rumble. The first issue of the new series arrives in stores Wednesday (11/27). We won't spoil it here, but those pages will reveal some of the motivations for why Dinah, the second-best fighter in the DC universe, would subject herself to the fists of the single-best fighter. It has something to do with the first woman to don the Black Canary mantle - her mother. Yup, this is a Tom King comic, so you know Black Canary: Best of the Best must feature a twisty, prickly core relationship. This week's episode explores why the ring is such a compelling story engine. We discuss how Tom King was initially enticed to place Black Canary alongside other brutal fictional bouts like Rocky, Raging Bull, The Set-Up, The Big Blow, and yeah, Best of the Best. Ryan Sook takes us through his process of understanding the physicality of boxing, wrestling, and MMA while contemplating their bloody nature. And why has it taken King so long to tackle the mother/daughter dynamic? To continue this conversation, follow Tom King on Bluesky, Threads, and Instagram. Follow Ryan Sook on Instagram. Eisner Award nominated comics writer Tate Brombal (Barbalien: Red Planet) returns to the show today to chat with me about his new DC Comics Elseworlds seven issue mini-series Green Lantern Dark. Last June Tate was a guest during our Pride Month coverage where he introduced the world to the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos which he is co-writing with James Tynion, a LGBTQ+ horror-hero coming-of-age series reintroducing us to the classic Universal Monsters creatures through a distinctly queer lens, now on its twelfth issue. We get into his own introduction to the Elseworlds Imprint through his uncle, how new Lantern Rina Mori was developed as a character, and how a chance dinner conversation created the unlikely creative partnership with artist Werther Dell'Edera. It's also been announced that he's taking on the role of writing the new Batgirl series resurrecting Cassandra Cain for her first ongoing solo series in decades with veteran artist Takeshi Miyazawa. I get to hear all about Tate's research for the book that involves watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and other martial arts movies to refresh his skills on scripting fight scenes and how the nucleus of the book will be focused on the relationship between Cassandra and Lady Shiva. At the end, Tate clues me in to one of the best deep dive book options for writer Mary Shelley research and we catch up on where things are with the Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. Find Tate on X and Instagram Green Lantern Dark from the publisher On a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by monsters, the battle between good and evil ended long ago--and evil won. Now darkness prevails as humanity struggles to survive in the corrupted wasteland that remains. Only one hero is said to haunt what's left of our shadowed cities, the one who wields the mystical green flame that could return light to a dark world--The Green Lantern. But she's been missing for years, and on the isolated island of New England, Solomon Grundy's undead army only grows larger and more powerful every night... Celebrated horror artist of smash hit Something is Killing the Children Werther Dell'Edera teams with rising-star writer Tate Brombal (House of Slaughter) to bring you a chilling tale of desperation, hope, and resurrection from the bitter remains of the fan-favorite Tangent Universe! It's been a minute since we were joined by Tom King on the show. If you checked the length of this episode then you know we had a LOT to catch up on. Between the last interview and now, Tom has been pretty busy making comics. Not only has he had all of his work at DC but is back to the creator owned world as well. Plus he's a big wig in Hollywood now too so he has been a bit busy.  On the episode, Dan and Tom King catch up on all the projects he's had. Our main focuses of the episode are the new series Black Canary: Best of the Best and Archie. But Dan makes sure to try to pull a little bit of everything into the interview with Tom as much as he can. With the focus of Tom King's new Black Canary series, Dan gets to ask about wrestling. Tom drops some wrestling lingo and gets into the face and heel discussion about Canary and Lady Shiva. If you weren't already excited for this upcoming series, then you're going to walk away from this interview ready to pre-order it from your LCS or Tom and I's shop, Third Eye Comics! They also get the chance to talk about Tom's recent one shot at Archie. Tom talks about the impact of Archie Comics on his children, him, and how one of the internets favorite members of the King family, Roxy, got a starring role. We talk about getting to work with the incredible Dan Parent in the Archie style.  And if you thought this interview would end without us talking about Trinity and those Super Sons then you'd be dead wrong. We talk a bit about legacy in the DCU universe before focusing on these three. We talk about Damian's Taylor Swift/Black Canary crush, how the reference image for the stadium might be Lincoln Finacial Field in Philly (go birds), and the evolving nature of this new trios dynamic in the DC Universe.

Recently announced by DC Comics, Tom King is teaming up with superstar artist Ryan Sook on a six-issue mini series focused on Black Canary to determine who is the best hand to hand fighter in the DC Universe. From the press release below we can see that her primary foe will be Lady Shiva. It comes as no surprise that Shiva will be the antagonist as she has long been regarded as one of the best fighters in the entirety of the DC Universe. Black Canary on the other hand, is not generally in the top five most formidable fighters if you ask most DC fans. Perhaps if you are only talking about females, her name might be mentioned. I think most DC fans familiar with these characters are much more likely to mention Cassandra Cain or the aforementioned Lady Shiva. The question does remain however, if the assertion of Canary as one of the best hand to hand fighters generates controversy, this series may not be as well-received as some of King's previous out of continuity work. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as bad press, so it is entirely possible that any online discourse about presenting Canary as possible the most formidable fight in the DCU rivaling Lady Shiva, will only have a positive effect on sales. There may be people that pick up the series just to see how the claim that Canary could best Shiva could possible me true. Only time will tell and you can decide for yourself starting on November 27th, when issue #1 hits comic shops.

Straub's looks, talent and alure charmed the likes of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Felini, Deneuve and more. Felini, in fact, remarked of her, “Someone who burns that bright, dies young.” She was a model, a singer and the muse of designers and artists. To that end, possibly her most recent impression as a muse was on director and writer Gabriel Bauer, who used never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with prominent contemporaries to create the stunning documentary GLOW, which is now available for streaming. Talking all about the latest DCU animated kung fu flick on the show today, Batman Soul of the Dragon. But really it's a Richard Dragon of the Kung Fu Masters series with Lady Shiva and Bronze tiger flick that takes place in the 70s and happens to have good ole Bruce Wayne in there too. Fantastic concept, done really swell with tons of great martial arts animation too. Of course this leads us into related tangents of Batman and just kung fu flicks in general as this movie is like a huge homage to Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon and John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China.   So come on by and join us on another adventure of OMO Podcast. Ashford, Mark, and our wonderful moderator Laurel discuss issue 64 of Birds of Prey, where the Black Canary has to team up with Lady Shiva and Cheshire.  I know, right?  Gail Simone writes a great script where the Canary has to combat on one front, and then we have Barbara Gordon being detained by some men who claim to be officers of the law, accusing her of committing treason.  Wow!

Hey guys. This is one of those ideas that you formulate because you want to see your favourite character in something, and not necessarily because it seems like a good plan. I really want to see Jason Todd (not original but best Red Hood) in the DC cinematic universe. I think the world is gritty enough to support the origins of the character, his robust and angsty nature, and the possibility of killing him off. We've already been blessed by a pretty great adaptation of the Under The Red Hood comic, so this movie will have to be original, and depart from the classic telling. Similarly, if you modernize it too much, you risk treading on the Arkham Knight portrayal which is fantastic, but not what I see being integrated in the film 'verse. Jason Todd will still be the reckless, orphan boy who is discovered whilst trying to pry the tires off the Batmobile, but we will see a depth to his origin, a desire to help others, and also the skewed sense of justice and violence that we come to expect from him in his later years. It's after his death, at the hands of the Joker and Harley Quinn, that we discover a fraction in the League of Assassins. Talia Al Ghul and her loyalist members (like Bronze Tiger, Lady Shiva, etc.) fracture away from Ra's Al Ghul after witnessing his reliance on the Joker for his latest scheme. They feel his direction is off, and the time for his daughter to lead the empire is now. Talia convinces her followers that the revival and utilization of the dead Robin is a top priority, and he will be a crucial general in their eventual plans and battles. But in truth, she wants to bring him back for love of her "Detective" and hopes that reviving his lost son will curry her favour with Bruce. As Jason is smuggled into a hidden (and some said tainted) Lazarus Pit, his body and the cave are prepared for a ritual. I won't go too much more into it, but the waters revive Jason and bestow upon him unique powers and armour unseen before. Somewhere between shimmering glassine alien materials, and a daemonic energy and presence, The Red Hood is born again formidable and thankfully new enough that we haven't seen this dog and pony show before. Yes his reflective helmet will stay, but will look unique enough to suggest that perhaps he is a creature from the beyond, and not just a man under the mask.I've got a feeling none of this will end up in the DC world, no matter the medium, but hey. Enjoy the ramblings none the less. Also God of Four continues to be awesome. I have a soft spot for games that reflect cosmetically the upgrades you give your armour and stuff. So every additional dwarven detail or gold border to the Leviathan Axe makes me drool that little bit more.Stay alive out there guys, let me know what you like/hate this week.Cheers

After defeating the arch-villain Lady Shiva, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) faces her biggest challenge-actually having her own adventures in the midst of numerous crossovers.Affiliate link included.Transcript below: Batgirl takes an Issue off to recover from death, then she gets involved in a lot of crossover events, and finally she gets to battle Batgirl? We'll talk all about it as we review Batgirl Volume Three: Point Blank, straight ahead.Welcome to the Classy Comics Podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham.OK, probably the first thing I should make clear is we're not actually talking about the Barbara Gordon Batgirl in today's program…talking about the Cassandra Cain Batgirl who was active from 2000 – 2006 and then again in 2008 for a mini series, but she was actually the first Batgirl to have her own title. Barbara Gordon's Batgirl previously only had strips in other magazines such as Detective Comics or Batman Family. Cassandra Cain was the daughter of David Cain as well as anti-heroine Lady Shiva. She was raised to be a killing machine by her father, and is traumatized by the memory of the one man she remembers killing when she was eight years old. The way he taught her and raised her was that she did not actually learn any language – she learned to read body movements which made her very effective as a fighter. However, she did learn to talk in the early Issues of Batgirl which caused her fighting skills to falter. She then made a deal with her mother, Lady Shiva; Lady Shiva promising to restore her powers and abilities as a super martial artist in exchange for fighting her a year later in a fight to the death. And Cassandra agreed to this, and in the battle to the death with Lady Shiva, Lady Shiva killed her but then brought her back to life and then Cassandra ends up defeating her. And I guess you would have to call that a draw overall, and that's where Point Blank comes in. It collects Issues Twenty-Six through Thirty-Seven, and follows immediately on the end of her battle with her mother.Issue Twenty-Six actually finds her out of action because she is recovering from being temporarily dead and is out like a light, but Barbara Gordon who is Oracle at this point sends Stephanie Brown who is known as Spoiler out to investigate a bit of an aftermath of that fight. And Stephanie goes out and does the investigation shadowed by her imagination's take on Batgirl. So, Batgirl is in this as a phantasm of Stephanie's imagination. This Issue is a bit weird, it's OK, it's really weird you have a Batgirl-like episode where she appears just like that as well as for a couple brief moments as she is recovering. After that we get into in Issue Twenty-Seven, the book does something and this is probably one of the chief challenges with this book, is that in the Batman Family books there was an event going on – actually a couple of events that came right one after another. One is collected in Bruce Wayne: Murderer? and then also Bruce Wayne:Fugitive, about Bruce Wayne being framed for murder and the Bat Family trying to work this out. And there are three Issues of Batgirl in this book that actually tie into those two events. I personally am not a big fan of including event-tying comics in the book because they tend to take you out of the story and out of the character's world, and I would just rather you've put those in the Events Book. But they didn't in this case and it turned out not to be so bad, they are at least mixed. Issue Twenty-Seven ties in and it has her, when learning about Bruce Wayne being suspected of murder, she does something nobody else does and digs up the body of the victim and makes a discovery when she examines the corpse. And it shows her kind of unique take as well as some of her g...
