Back in 2004, no Arsenal fan would have believed that after going an entire Premier League season unbeaten, they'd have to wait 22 YEARS to be crowned Champions again… then on Tuesday night, all the waiting and wishing and fear and lost hope finally came to an end - and North London was brought to a standstill. Fireworks, fans and Arsenal players still celebrating outside the Emirates at 5am.Mikel Arteta's side have overcome the memes and online jibes of 'bottlers' to mark an end to Pep Guardiola's reign over English football.Do the endless conversations over their 'style' still matter? Does this change the complexion of their Champions League final against PSG? And with the pressure to deliver a major title lifted, how will Arteta's team evolve?Former Man City defender Nedum Onouha and the Athletic's Arsenal correspondent Amy Lawrence joins Gabby and Mark to explain.

Starting off their dare of including silent films into the Take-Up canon, Josh and Andrew watch F.W Murnau's class-conscious drama The Last Laugh. Tackling the miserablist story of status, our hosts discuss the film's political connections with Weimar Germany, its place in film history, the immense talent of Emil Jannings, and a mixed response to the "studio-note" ending. Then, they have One More Thing, bringing up the Tippi Hedren “ferocious comedy” Roar (yes, that Roar) and the 70s adaptations of the fictional Japanese murder mystery detective Kosuke Kindaichi, including The Inugami Family. Next week, Josh and Andrew continue their journey with Dziga Vertov's Soviet documentary Man with a Movie Camera. Our guest this week is Andrew Ginsburg of Southport, CT who is a stand-up comedian, author of three books and perhaps most importantly, father of three young children.Andrew and his wife, Rachel Gerber, have been married for 10 years and are the proud parents of three young children: Ben (8), Leo (6) and Remi (4).Professionally Andrew has been a fitness trainer and an accomplished stand-up comedian for more than two decades. He was also a competitive body builder in his youth. One of Andrew's gifts is his ability to write and communicate. He is the author of: Pumping Irony: How to Build Muscle, Lose Weight, and Have the Last Laugh, and two children's books: Critter Caravan, andThe Colors Of My Sky Andrew's passion for being a father is rooted in the complicated relationship he shared with his late father, who was a medic and Lt. Commender in the Navy in Vietnam, a Harvard trained physician and chief of surgery at Forrest Hills. Sadly his dad was catastrophically injured in a jogging accident at 68 that compromised his mobility and intellectual ability the last 15 years of his life. Joining Josh and Andrew this week, Washington University PhD Candidate Victor Putinier takes them down to post-Summer-of-Love California for 70s cult horror classic Messiah of Evil. Giddily getting into Gloria Katz and William Huyck's “California gothic”, the trio voice their admiration for a film that refuses to draw a clear line in the sand, from its unfinished production, subversion of zombie horror, and somehow doing its own thing while learning from the seemingly disparate works of Italian masters Mario Bava and Michelango Antonioni. Then, they have One More Thing, recommending the new album The Spiritual Sound from death metal band Agriculture, as well as continuing their talk of California Gothic with the 1970 adaptation of The Dunwich Horror. On the next episode, our hosts decide to give themselves a challenge. Venturing further back in film history, Josh and Andrew will pick out movies from the silent era, starting things off with F.W Murnau's The Last Laugh. Andrew is a children's book author whose latest book, "The Colors of My Sky," is a touching story with a timely message on diversity and kindness. The story behind the story is that before becoming a children's book author, Andrew was a stand-up comic for 25 years, as well as a champion bodybuilder. Photos from his website, andrewginsubrg.com, show Andrew on stage as a headliner at Caroline's; Andrew on stage signing books at Barnes & Noble; Andrew on stage at Saturday Night Live; and most eye-popping of all, Andrew on stage smiling and flexing in a thong. I was impressed but also surprised - Andrew barely gestured at these accomplishments in his email to me. The photos, it seemed, were of scenes from a past life. What does it take, I wondered, to turn a stand-up comic into a children's book author? And for that matter, what makes any of us decide that it's time to step off one stage and onto the next?Check out Andrew's children's books, The Colors of My Sky and Critter Caravan as well as his fitness book, Pumping Irony: How to Build Muscle, Lose Weight, and Have the Last Laugh.*UPDATE* shortly after our interview, Andrew added JFK Jr. Look Alike contest winner to his many accomplishments! Congrats, Andrew! A big win for all of us dads and a reminder that WE STILL GOT IT, BABY.

While the external validation she received made her feel successful and even loved, something was missing. In this episode of Meditative Story, Sara shares how she came to look inward, instead of outward, for richer feelings of worth. A catcher with a .200 batting average. A career WAR of negative one. In most cases, a résumé like that disappears into the dustbin of baseball history. But this player turned six seasons of mediocrity into a lifetime of fame, not by hiding his failures, but by turning them into comedy gold. This is the story of Bob Uecker, the man who made us laugh at baseball's absurdity, and, in doing so, reminded us why it matters at all.
Fritz Lang's Metropolis In 1927 Cinema was still in its relative infancy. Nearly eleven years earlier D.W. Griffith had established the "grammar of cinema" with his epic masterpiece, The Birth of a Nation. The subsequent decade would showcase spectacles (Ben-Hur, Intolerance), comedies (The Gold Rush, The General), and dramatic classics (Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, The Last Laugh). Cinematic Science Fiction would be attempted as early as 1902 with Melie's A Voyage to the Moon, however it would take nearly a quarter of a century for Sci-Fi to reveal its technical brilliance and possibilities with 1927s Fritz Lang masterpiece Metropolis. While an incredibly innovative, beautiful, and groundbreaking film, Lang's narrative (from a treatment and screenplay by his wife and artistic partner, Thea von Harbou), continues - or is the beginning - of the lazy and apologetic "White Savior" cinematic trope that has continued from Lawrence of Arabia thru Dances with Wolves, and most recently, Avatar and Dune. This week Mr. Chavez & I go back to the argument that we have made before and will continue to make regarding this insulting and problemtic cinematic trope. Each generation seems to want to tell its own version of this story without recognizing the inherent hypocrisy of a society and culture victimized by the elite while simultaneously needing to be saved by a blonde-haired, blue-eyed messiah (in this case a billionaire suddenly aware of his "mediator destiny" and responsibility to his "brothers"). Yes, we recognize the technical and production brilliance of this film, while at the same time being unable to ignore (or excuse) the obvious and insulting simplicity of its narrative. It is possible to simultaneoulsy admire and take issue with a work of art. Take a listen and ask yourself if you agree. Let us know what you think. We often say it's a miracle any movie gets made, but some movies are actual miracles. Groundhog Day (1993) is a perfect example of this, because its three primary creative voices (director Harold Ramis, writer Danny Rubin, and star Bill Murray) were each pulling in different, conflicting directions throughout the movie's production. Somehow, all that dissension led to a perfect object of a film, a hilarious comedy that gets at huge philosophical questions, but not in an annoying way. And it's also a sweet and lovely little romantic comedy... so why did it ruin the decades-long friendship between Ramis and Murray? Plus: Learn all about actual Groundhog Day! What if the Royals played everyone here and were actually the smartest, most brilliant business tacticians in all of this Kansas City stadium drama? It's either that or they are the luckiest outfit ever. We'll let you decide but there's no denying 5 years ago the Royals said they were getting a new stadium and they wanted it downtown. When that failed at every turn, did they use Overland Park and Kansas officials for leverage to get what they wanted? Did they let the Chiefs move first, something they know doubt knew was in the works, to let the freak out happen? It's possible. If not... wow were they lucky. Hey, turns out Alex Pretti was known to the feds as a problem... we have some details. Also in Minneapolis, an agitator confronts Ilhan Omar and, get this, the Minneapolis local police arrest the guy. Go figure. Bill Belichick fails to get the vote to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame and it shows just how absurd and petty the committee members are. The Chiefs name two local architecture firms working to design their new stadium. I don't think it's a competition. Darryn Peterson is ready to rock Saturday against BYU and their star freshman AJ Dybansta. K-State has a buyout problem with Jerome Tang, Mizzou gets drilled at Alabama. A billionaire is paying our Olympic athletes and a man in New Jersey is ordered by his wife to return expensive orange juice to the store and it turns out your wife always knows best. You have to hear this Final Final.

Judd Apatow didn't realize it at the time, but as a young teenager growing up on Long Island in the ‘70s, he was inventing the comedy podcast by doing the first-ever long-form radio interviews with his stand-up heroes. So it's only fitting that he's the last guest ever on The Last Laugh podcast. In his fourth and final appearance on the show—taped before the tragic deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele—Apatow reflects on his early experiences as a proto-comedy podcaster and explains the “lifelong obsession” that inspired his new book, ‘Comedy Nerd.' (Proceeds benefit the youth writing charity 826 and the Los Angeles wildfire relief organization Fire Aid.) The writer, director, and producer also discusses the state of the studio comedy in 2025, and how some of his most beloved films and TV shows took years to find their audiences. And ahead of his definitive two-part documentary about Mel Brooks coming to HBO in the new year, Apatow breaks down the power of satire to hold the powerful to account. This year, nobody did that better than ‘South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. And Apatow has a theory for why Donald Trump has stayed conspicuously silent about their humiliating portrayal of him.Stay tuned to this feed for the premiere of Obsessed: The Podcast, coming in January from the Daily Beast. Kathryn Hahn never set out to be an explicitly comedic actress. But starting with breakthrough roles in instant classics like ‘Anchorman' and ‘Step Brothers,' she has slowly but surely established herself as a comedy powerhouse who can go toe-to-toe with everyone from Will Ferrell to Amy Poehler. So it should come as no surprise that she spent 2025 stealing scenes from Seth Rogen on his Apple TV satire ‘The Studio.' In this episode, Hahn breaks down how she embraced her character Maya's signature style, reveals the famous guest star who impressed her most, and explains how the Season 1 cliffhanger predicted the Netflix-Warner Bros. deal that could reshape Hollywood forever. She also shares stories from the sets of her iconic comedy films, discusses the dream come true of entering the Marvel universe as Agatha Harkness, and teases what fans can expect from the upcoming second season of ‘The Studio.' Michelle Wolf is probably best known for being the comedian who roasted Sarah Huckabee Sanders to her face at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in 2018. Seven years later, her only regret is that she wasn't meaner. In this episode, Wolf reflects on how much—and how little—has changed since, from Donald Trump's escalating attacks on comedians to her new identity as mom of two, which she explores in her new Netflix special ‘The Well.' She discusses her complicated reasons for turning down the Riyadh Comedy Festival, explains how her short-lived talk show ‘The Break' predicted Trump 2.0, and shares her take on the fragile state of late-night TV. And later, Wolf reveals how she ended up writing Kim Kardashian's SNL monologue after the reality star decided Amy Schumer's jokes weren't funny enough. Tim Meadows was once the longest-serving cast member on ‘Saturday Night Live.' These days, he's subtly stealing scenes as the third lead on a CBS sitcom, ‘DMV.' But despite plenty of ups and downs over the course of his nearly 40-year career, Meadows seems to be at peace with his particular level of fame. In this episode, Meadows traces the arc of his career, from his unusual path to Lorne Michaels' office to the disastrous attempt to turn his most popular recurring character into a full-length feature film. He reveals why he really didn't want the actual Monica Lewinsky to make a cameo as herself with The Ladies Man Leon Phelps—and what changed his mind. Meadows also explains why he ultimately decided to leave ‘SNL' after 10 seasons, the late-night TV gig he now regrets turning down, and how he found creative fulfillment playing supporting roles in films like ‘Mean Girls' and ‘Walk Hard.'Follow Tim Meadows on Instagram @real_timmeadows Follow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpodWatch full episodes of The Last Laugh podcast on the Daily Beast's Obsessed YouTube channelHighlights from this episode and others at TheDailyBeast.com Hosted on Acast. With his Netflix special ‘Is It Me?' and his autobiographical movie ‘About My Father' co-starring Robert De Niro, he's on the verge of finally becoming a household name. In this episode, Maniscalco opens up about doubling down on nostalgia and (mostly) avoiding controversy on stage. He also talks about how the comedy world has changed for better and worse since he got his start in the late ‘90s, shares stories from the sets of ‘Green Book' and ‘The Irishman' and explains how he decided to embrace the most embarrassing moment of his career on Jimmy Fallon's ‘Tonight Show.'This episode was originally published on December 6, 2022.Follow Sebastian Maniscalco on Instagram @sebastiancomedy Follow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpodWatch full episodes of The Last Laugh podcast on the Daily Beast's YouTube channelHighlights from this episode and others at TheDailyBeast.com Hosted on Acast. Patton Oswalt begins his latest stand-up special (‘Black Coffee and Ice Water,' streaming on Audible Nov. 20) by reading a fake disclaimer about how he's gone full MAGA in an attempt to avoid the authoritarian hand of Donald Trump. It's a funny bit that also underscores the comedian's very real fears about being an outspokenly anti-fascist voice in 2025 America. In his third appearance on the podcast, Oswalt talks about the freedom of putting together an audio-only special, which includes jokes about his teenage daughter and celebrating 30 years on Prozac. He also shares his visceral reaction to Jimmy Kimmel's suspension, Donald Trump's “mediocrity,” the MAGA-friendly comedians who happily took Saudi Arabia's money, and what keeps him performing stand-up nearly 40 years into his career. Silverman's father and stepmother are buried under one tombstone that reads: "Janice and Donald, who loved to laugh." The loss was a starting point for Silverman's "cathartic" Netflix comedy special, PostMortem. She spoke with Terry Gross about their final days, finding the joy in grief, and she reflects on the boys' club of the comedy scene when she was starting out.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
