Episode 263: Reminders to Live By was inspired by one of my favorite General Conference talks, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf's "Forget Me Not." As I revisited this talk, I couldn't stop thinking about how perfectly these five reminders apply to missionaries, returned missionaries, missionary moms, and anyone preparing to serve. In this episode, we talk about being patient with yourself, understanding the difference between a good sacrifice and a foolish sacrifice, finding happiness now instead of waiting for better circumstances, remembering the why behind the gospel, and trusting that God knows you, loves you, and has never forgotten you. I also share why our brains naturally notice what's going wrong and how learning to respond with self-compassion instead of self-judgment changes everything. We explore the 50/50 experience of life, missionary comparison, healthy sacrifice, emotional wellbeing, and why your worth has never depended on your performance. Whether you're serving a mission, preparing to serve, supporting a missionary, or adjusting after your mission, these reminders can help you experience more peace, more confidence, and a stronger relationship with God. More than anything, I hope this episode reminds you that you're not behind, you're not forgotten, and you don't have to earn God's love. He already knows your name, He understands exactly where you are, and He is cheering you on every step of the way. A Montreal teenager is getting national attention for an invention inspired by a personal family experience. Aviana Machnes created "Forget Me Not," a device designed to help prevent household accidents for people living with memory loss, and the project recently earned top honours at the Regional Science and Technology Fair. In this episode of the Discovery podcast, Jevan Hutson, J.D. '20, incoming assistant professor of law and director of the Technology Law & Public Policy Clinic, discusses the article "Forget Me Not? Machine Unlearning's Implications for Privacy Law," which he co-authored in The Columbia Science & Technology Law Review. The article explores the intersection of generative AI, privacy and data protection law and focuses on "machine unlearning," an emerging tool designed to address privacy concerns. As generative AI systems increasingly process vast amounts of personal and sensitive data, the challenges they pose to privacy regulations are intensifying. Machine unlearning allows for the selective removal or suppression of specific data — such as personal information that individuals request be deleted — from AI models. This process aims to help organizations comply with legal obligations and policy goals, particularly in response to data subject requests for data deletion. Hutson assesses whether the legal and remedial aims of privacy laws can be reconciled with the technical capabilities of machine unlearning. Listeners are invited to consider the future of privacy law in an AI-driven world and the role of machine unlearning in preserving privacy rights.
