Host Anthony Desiato digs into the Bronze Age comic book series THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY, which ran for 54 issues from 1980-1984, in an epic 2-part discussion! First, Anthony welcomes Jon Wilson (JON READS COMICS) to compare notes on the run by writer Cary Bates and artist Kurt Schaffenberger, which gave the Kents a far larger, more active role in their son's training and highlighted the future Superman's growing pains in a new way. Then, Rob O'Connor (ALL STAR SUPERFAN PODCAST) tags in to tackle writer Paul Kupperberg's run with Schaffenberger, which developed Superboy's supporting cast, gave Clark Kent a girlfriend, and saw Jonathan Kent in a bid for city council. They also discuss what Kupperberg had planned for the written, but unpublished, issue #55."A Superboy Fan Journey" Chapter V. Crónicas Superheroicas #2.8 SUPERGIRL: LOS ÚLTIMOS AÑOS Con Patricio López Tobares Octubre de 1985. Paul Levitz and Paul Kupperberg were fast comic fans and friends growing up in NYC in the late sixties. Soon, they were producing amateur fanzines and then The Comic Reader as they made their way into the industry. They continued crossing paths at DC, where both would become editors, and they remain friends to this day. We get into those early memories, reminisce about DC days gone by, and take a look back at the legacy of each in the industry.Get thee to Kickstarter, and back Paul Kupperberg's new book of interviews, Direct Creativity, now!_____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. There's only one Paul Kupperberg. But there's a big group of creators that came up at DC Comics during the so-called Bronze Age of comics, and lucky enough, Paul's friends with most of them. So he decided to do what friends do and reminisce about the days of yore, bringing the adventures of our four-color heroes to life in the 70s and 80s. And then he did something different. He recorded those conversations, transcribed them into text, and compiled it all into a book called Direct Conversations. It's the sequel to his similar Direct Comments, and Paul gets into it with such DC luminaries as Howard Chaykin, Paul Levitz, Joe Staton, and more! So basically, this episode is talking to Paul about talking to his friends, all of whom helped make DC what it is today. No big whoop. If it's before noon on 10/26/22 when you're reading this, you can still support the Direct Conversations Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/writingcomics/direct-conversations. Chow down on butter chicken with Paul Kupperberg as we discuss which superhero starred in his first favorite comic book, the reasons we're in agreement when it comes to the Stan Lee vs. Jack Kirby debate, why his introduction to Superman had nothing to do with comics, what we each felt was lacking in our own early comic book writing, the surprising identity of the DC editor whose books sold the best, what caused legendary artist Don Heck to curse him out, the special challenges of writing comic strips, how he needed to get ready (or not) before writing all those legacy characters, what it was like rebooting Doom Patrol, which Archie character's death upset him so much he had to step away from the keyboard, and much more.
Comics writer Paul Kupperberg is the very definition of prolific! He has written 1,400 comics over 4 decades, wrote for and was the editor of the Weekly World News, wrote Mad Libs, and is still staying busy writing books and novels. Paul's credits include the Doom Patrol, Peacemaker, Vigilante, and the first comic book miniseries (1979's World of Krypton), as well as being the writer who killed Archie (after simultaneously marrying him off to both Betty AND Veronica). Also: In the real world, superheroes would be NUTS. The willing suspension of disbelief versus the art style. What Archie means to Paul. Target audiences for comic books over different eras. Does Paul prefer the JSA or JLA? Armchair quarterbacking by comics fans. The challenges of continuity in serialized fiction over time (with some insight behind Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot). Which classic silver age DC comics issues didn't have a number on the cover, and why? One positive early benefit of the direct market in the comics industry. What was the first comics miniseries (and why was it a last-minute thing)? What did James Gunn think of Paul's version of Peacemaker? Which comics character has Paul had the strongest fan feedback to? What does he consider his strongest sustained comics work? What's the one comics character he would love to return to? More!
