Host Anthony Desiato and guest Logan Crowley (Single Bound) dig into the "one, true Brainiac" introduced by Geoff Johns & Gary Frank in ACTION COMICS post-Infinite Crisis: the cold, Coluan collector of worlds who bottled Kandor and has appeared in many previous forms.Anthony & Logan discuss the original 2008 "Brainiac" comic book arc by Johns & Frank along with its 2013 animated adaptation (SUPERMAN: UNBOUND). They also cover subsequent interpretations of Brainiac in the New 52 & Rebirth eras, in live action on SyFy's KRYPTON, and in animated form during the 2025 season of HBO Max's HARLEY QUINN.This concludes the podcast's epic Brainiac coverage.
Mark Waid is back to preview his Superman Spiderman crossover. We talk about Mister Terrific's time dislaced team in Justice League Unlimited with a Tim Drake Batman and Blue Superman . Action Comics and the Superboy Saga , plus The World's Finest team of Superman and Batman and Mark's return to the Flash co-writing with Christopher Cantwell

This week we head back to a time before Marvel Comics, before Superman and Batman, to a world before superheroes, and bring you a history of The Shadow! Before Superman exploded onto the pages of Action Comics, the world of action-adventure was a very different place, full of detectives, gangsters, Science Fiction and the supernatural - the world of Pulp Fiction! In a world of Tarzan, Zorro and Conan The Barbarian, The Shadow emerged completely by accident and ended up becoming the world's first superhero! We'll track the tale from pulp magazines to radio adventures to cliffhanger movie serials and beyond! "But, at night to Mohammed, he confessed his doubts: It will not be as we dream, when those of us who survive finally get there. Corrupt politicians have already ensconced themselves. They are waiting for us—waiting for us not as brothers but as our masters. They will use us." – As told to John Berger, "Two Recumbent Male Figures Wrestling on a Sidewalk""For a moment, he actually feels he can't go on, can't function anymore, living two lives with enough stress for ten but less than enough sleep for one."– Doug Moench, BATMAN #484The United States is a broken empire. It just doesn't know it yet. The 1990s marked the full bloom of the international counterrevolution, whose mission to destroy the gains of the 20th century had just seen its first major victory in the destruction of the USSR. With no systemic power to oppose it, capitalism molted the old skin of social democracy, unveiling its truest form to hollow fanfare and a dead-eyed audience.Bereft of an external enemy worth organizing against, unsatisfied with the empty calories of the video game war, confronted with the grim realities of vaunted liberal democratic values, Americans tried to make sense of life at the end of history. Whose triumph was this? Even superhero fans found themselves yearning for—but never quite finding—meaning in heroes whose integral, inflated violence now seemed both superfluous and insufficient to the moment. Despite having "won" the Cold War, maybe what American audiences needed to see was one more domino fall.***The Black Casebook:EmailTwitterBlueskyInstagramPatreon---------Collective Action Comics:Email Instagram TwitterBlueskyPatreon---------Our episode art was by the great Kly, whom you can (and should) support on Patreon.

Jace and Rocky return for another Comic Boom! / Comic Source DC Spotlight for the week of December 10, 2025, kicking off with holiday updates on gift guides, Fireside Chats, and year-end scheduling before diving into a varied slate of nine DC books. They start with Action Comics #1093, where the Silver Age tone, moral dilemmas, and standout Skylar Patridge art drive a strong Superboy-focused chapter; then move into Batman and Robin #28, a top-tier issue that deepens the Quiet Man mystery, expands the Ventriloquist twist, and showcases why Phillip Kennedy Johnson's run will be so missed. In DC KO, Aquaman #12 becomes the week's breakout as Jeremy Adams and John Timms push Arthur's power set to astonishing levels in a visually explosive Hawkman showdown. Gotham by Gaslight: A League for Justice #6 gets praise for world-building but mixed reactions for a rushed, multiversal conclusion, while Supergirl #8 lands as a quiet, emotional holiday detour centered on loneliness, legacy, and the Linda-robot twist. Scott Snyder and Jock's Absolute Batman #15 earns divided reactions—Rocky loving its monstrous Joker origin while Jace ranks it lowest out of personal preference—leading into the universally panned DC KO: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo, a structurally chaotic, inconsistently illustrated, rule-breaking oddity that squanders a marquee matchup. The guys close with Green Lantern Corps #11, a strong, character-rich chapter spotlighting Ellie, Jon Stewart, Equanar's origin, and the growing Corps-wide stakes, before wrapping with Children of the Round Table #4, a well-executed setup issue introducing each magical weapon, expanding the Camelot training mythology, and dropping a sharp political twist with Mordred influencing the U.S. presidency. As always, the episode ends with full rankings, collected-edition recommendations, and reminders to catch the video on Comic Boom! and the audio on The Comic Source podcast feed.
On today's episode, I talk to comics writer Brian Michael Bendis. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Brian knew from an early age he wanted to make comics. His late teens and twenties were spent making his own comics, some of them published by Caliber Press, and in 1996, a lot of this work was collected together at Image. This led to working on the Spawn spin-off Sam and Twitch, and in 1998, he began releasing Powers, which would go on to garner both critical and commercial success, as well as Harvey and Eisner Awards. In 2000, Brian co-created Miles Morales when he began writing Ultimate Spider-Man. The next year, Brian began a defining run on Daredevil and co-created Jessica Jones with the start of Alias. And this is essentially just the first decade of his career! Since then, he went on to write defining runs on comics like Avengers and New Avengers, events like House of M, books like Superman and Action Comics for DC, and most recently, for the 25th anniversary of Powers, Brian and artist Michael Avon Oeming are creating a new 12-issue series at Dark Horse, and it's great! From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)
Welcome to From Crisis to Crisis Classic! Because of the original feed getting lost due to financial considerations I (Michael) decided to start representing them on this feed to give them a new home since people still seem to be finding them. Note before listening...check out the original release date below if you hear something that sounds kind of off or doesn't align with the social norms of today. Or if the audio quality isn't up to snuff of what you'd hear from this show today. These epsiodes are represented as they were first released. No editing. No George Lucas style revamps. I'm doing this mainly because I want to retain the original feel of the episodes and also because...well, I'm lazy. Episode 5 - March 1987 Original Release Date - June 9, 2009 Original Show Notes This week your hosts, Michael Bailey and Jeffrey Taylor, examine the books that came out with the cover date of March 1987 and is the first post-Crisis crossover, both in terms of the books crossing over with each other and in terms of crossing into a major DC event. Superman #3, Adventures of Superman #426 and Action Comics #586 were all chapters of the Legends crossover that DC published in late 1986/early 1987. Jeff and Mike discuss Legends as a mini-series before going into the issues themselves with a little more Legends talk right there at the end. This episode clocks in at about an hour and eighteen minutes, which is a tad longer than normal but the extra space is worth it. At least the guys think so, but what do they know?
This Week on Earth Station DCU! Drew Leiter and Cletus Jacobs review comics and stupid happens. In Action Comics #1082–1084, Superman investigates why reformed villains like Major Disaster are relapsing into crime, uncovers a conspiracy manipulating them alongside Batman, and ultimately learns that alien Foreverers have been exploiting their DNA to prolong their own lives. In Batman/Superman: World's Finest #36–37, Batman, Superman, Robin, Aquaman, and Swamp Thing battle the Floronic Man's eco-terror plot beneath the seas, ultimately uniting Atlantis and thwarting his bid for oceanic dominion. In Black Lightning #4–5, Jefferson Pierce clashes with Superman while struggling to guide his daughters, then reunites with his family to battle Volcana and the Masters of Disaster in Southside Metropolis, ultimately setting up his recruitment into the Power Company. The guys spend a good 36 minutes talking about Superman #2, which either means it had a lot going for it or that Mike and Jeff are just chatty. Then there's Adventures of Superman #425, where a supporting character has something of a break down. Finally the guys talk about Action Comics #485, which Jeff and Mike thought was ok but not a book you wanted to take home to meet the parents.

In this 2013 Word Balloon conversation, artist Rags Morales discusses his pivotal work on Action Comics during DC Comics' New 52 relaunch. Morales reflects on collaborating with writer Grant Morrison to redefine Superman for a new generation—depicting a younger, more grounded Man of Steel in his early years as a social crusader. The discussion explores the creative process behind redesigning the character's look, the artistic challenges of working on such an iconic title, and how Action Comics helped set the tone for the New 52 era across the DC Universe.
