Special Episode: Bendis and Andreyko - Ohio Comic Book Icons - in Conversation

This week, we are sharing an historic conversation among Ohio comic book royalty: Prolific, award-winning creators Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko. The conversation was moderated by Mike Sangiacomo, one of the Founders of the Siegel and Shuster Society. Recorded live on July 11, 2026, at the Cleveland Public Library as part of the weekend-long Icons Fest held in conjunction with the Icons in Ink: The Jewish Comics Experience exhibit at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage (on display until August 23, 2026). Growing up together in Northeast Ohio, Bendis and Andreyko first teamed up as friends to create the true crime comic book series Torso, the story of the "Torso Murders" in Cleveland in the 1930s when Eliot Ness was the city's Safety Director. Their wide-ranging conversation included stories about their early collaboration and the on-going challenge of bringing Torso to the screen, their storied careers in the comic book and entertainment industries, and Cleveland Public Library's role in Bendis's decision to go to DC to write for Superman. Brian Michael Bendis was born in Cleveland, took classes at Cleveland Institute of Art, and did work for several Cleveland-area newspapers and magazines in his early career. He has co-created characters like Miles Morales, Jessica Jones, and dozens of others that populate the Marvel, DC and all-new original universes. He is a New York Times bestseller and has won numerous awards for his work, including multiple Eisner Awards and a Peabody for Jessica Jones. Bendis was Executive Producer of the Academy Award winning hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Bendis' fabled move to DC Entertainment after nearly two decades at Marvel made international headlines, making his DC debut in the landmark Action Comics 1000. Bendis continues to be a prolific creator, producer, Marc Andreyko grew up in Mentor, graduated from Mentor High School, and co-created the character Kate Spencer/Manhunter for DC and was the original writer on Wonder Woman '77. He has written comics for Dark Horse, DC, IDW, Image, and Marvel. Michael Sangiacomo is a long-time writer of articles on Superman and the comics industry for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. In 2006, he penned an article that urged Cleveland to embrace the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and this led to the creation of the Siegel and Shuster Society of which he was a founding board member. Sangiacomo has also taught comic book history at Case Western Reserve University and is a comics writer himself. In This Episode: Brian Michael Bendis Jinxworld: Brian Michael Bendis (official site) The Peabody Awards ceremony where Bendis was called “the original hero” for his creation of Jessica Jones ‘I'd Have Been a Fool Not to Try Everything': PW Talks with Brian Michael Bendis (Publishers Weekly, 2026) Marc Andreyko DC Comics Press Release for Love Is Love (2016) Marc Andreyko talks comic anthology Love Is Love (Entertainment Weekly, 2017) Supergirl & Superman Unite Against Krypton's Killers (ScreenRant.com, 2019) Michael Sangiacomo Cleveland, the True Birthplace of Superman (Smithsonian Magazine, 2010) Cleveland Torso Murders The Torso Killer: Cleveland's Lingering Mystery from Cleveland Public Library Cleveland Torso Murders (aka The Kingsbury Run Murders) from the Cleveland Police Museum Torso Murders from Encyclopedia of Cleveland History Siegel and Shuster Society (including information about the Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster Superman Plaza) Telling Lies in America (film by writer Joe Eszterhas (who also grew up in Ohio) mentioned in the conversation) Underexposed! Jace and Rocky break down all 14 DC releases for the week of July 22, 2026. Green Lantern #37 shows Kyle Rayner and Odyssey both learning you should never feed the trolls when Odyssey's online feud spills into the real world. Harley Quinn #64 reveals the mastermind behind the Harley Quinn Revenge Squad and proves Harley is her own worst enemy. Superman #40 uses Superboy-Prime to show that even after redemption begins, the consequences of your past never disappear. Justice League Unlimited #21 has the League finally turn the tables on Brainiac Queen with a surprise plan from Red Tornado and the Atom, while Batman and Lex learn they have something in common regarding the consequences of the Omega Tournament. Superman: Father of Tomorrow #3 shows Lex Luthor's decision to abandon science for sorcery perfectly highlighting the series' central debate over power and responsibility. Absolute Wonder Woman #22 has Barbara Minerva willingly surrender herself to Urzkartaga, but her true objective remains a mystery. The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Kane Mystery #6 sends Ezra Kane into the skies in a biplane for a cinematic showdown with Nazi automatons that delivers the pulp-adventure ending the series promised. Swamp Thing (1989) #4 gives Swamp Thing and Abigail a hopeful ending by leaving multiversal versions of themselves behind. Dark Knights of Steel: Heir to the Sea #1 highlights Arthur Curry taking Superman's place as the extraordinary child raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. Absolute Superman #21 delivers a perfect balance of action and character as Superman shows just how much he cares about the people who can slip through the cracks as much as he cares about world-ending threats like King Shazam. Zatanna #4 has Zatanna learn firsthand from previous Prime Magi that the role isn't what she thought it was. The Flash #35 has Wally learn that with enough data he can stop anything bad from occurring in Central City—but should he be watching everyone? And what happens when he tries to expand that to Metropolis? Action Comics #1100 ends its time-travel story with Superboy coming face-to-face with his older self, while a surprise return from a classic Superman villain leads into the next big event for the Superman Family. Detective Comics #1111 has Batman's investigation uncover the terrifying truth behind the force manipulating generations of the Prion family, and his vow to save them proves the lasting impact Prion had during his brief time with Batman. They also give a rundown of this week's collected editions, reprints and facsimile releases. As always, all books are ranked from top to bottom and each host gives a Book of the Week pick.

The original Supergirl debuted in DC Comics' Action Comics #252 in May 1959, the very first live-action adaptation, the feature film Supergirl, starring Helen Slater, was released in theaters in 1984 which saw Kara, superman's cousin from Krypton who goes to earth herself in order to recover the lost Omega Hedron which is a power source for the planet .............. so its been a while for a live-action take of the Madain of might you might say. Over the decades there have been various uses of Supergirl, most notably the CW take on the character when they were doing ALL those Arrowverse shows at the time, where Melissa Benoist starred as Kara Danvers (Kara Zor-El) in the hit superhero television series Supergirl, which aired on The CW from 2016 to 2021 Now HERE WE ARE coming off the heels of SUPERMAN 2025, and we have the second film from DC Studios, certainly and 'interesting' choice for your second film out of the gate (as some people thought), Nah I'm sorry gang THAT title still belongs to DC's next film CLAYFACE, gee a BATMAN villian solo film with (as far as WE know) NOT a BATMAN in sight, that sounds vaguely familiar .................. but hey we will get to THAT in October  SUPERMAN 2025 felt %100 percent like it was ripped right from the pages of the comic book, but it was EXACTLY a return to the core to what SUPERMAN is, and the point of SUPERMAN, and (most importantly), the reliability of SUPERMAN, which lets be HONEST has not really been struck on the BIG SCREEN since Christopher Reeve, looking back on it through the lens of our cinematic movie year 2026, history was written LOL LOL LOL LOL hahahahahaha the DC brand had begun its collective healing. Course WE would assume ALL is well then going from here On the latest episode of Injustice vs Elesworlds Podcasters of BOTH Worlds, your hosts David Senden and Kyle Wagner talk SUPERGIRL 2026, the GOOD, the BAD, the DISCOURSE of it ALL, and hey THAT got terribly TRAGICALLY overblown, regardless of what thoughts are on the film itself, or its OVERALL impact of the budding DC universe there if only ONE rule ....................... THERE WILL BE NO MILLY ALCOCK SLANDER !!!!!!!!!!!!! Movies. Movies are a beautiful Blink SNAP shot Moment in Time Assessment of where we are culturally, and its TRAGICALLY sad THAT Supergirl is a cautionary tale of that, THAT shouldn't be the case AT ALL A new Injustice vs Elesworlds Podcasters of BOTH Worlds starts RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Collecting Issues is a monthly comic book book club. We have read the thing, you have read the thing, and there are spoilers all the way down. This month Ben and Michael take on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, collecting issues 1 to 8 of the 2021 DC Comics series by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Matheus Lopes.King has been open that the pitch was True Grit in space, a mentor and mentee bound together by revenge, and the book delivers exactly that: Ruthye, a farm girl whose father is murdered by the mercenary Krem of the Yellow Hills, hires the most dangerous gun in the galaxy, and the most dangerous gun in the galaxy turns out to be Kara Zor-El.What we argue about:Whether the morality holds. The inciting incident is one dead father and one poisoned dog, but by the midpoint Krem has been implicated in a galaxy's worth of genocide. Does the personal revenge story survive that escalation, or does the scale swallow it?The Norman Rockwell segregation planet, and whether a comic can plausibly frame selling out your neighbours as the truest evil in a story this full of atrocity.Ruthye as unreliable narrator. She writes like a Victorian novelist, talks like a Western, and behaves like an Arthurian knight. She also does not witness the two biggest set pieces in the book, which raises the question of what we are actually looking at when Supergirl fights a space dragon.Comet the Super-Horse, first appearing in 1962, who is not a horse but a centaur named Byron, cursed by a wizard, gifted telepathy by Circe, and later beaming half-naked dream visions at a teenage Kara. Tom King brings him back and kills him off. We have questions. The Art:Bilquis Evely and Matheus Lopes, and why this book does not work without them. Evely designs a costume that sidesteps the miniskirt exploitation that has defined the character since Action Comics #252 in 1959, and she renders alien worlds that feel genuinely alien rather than Guardians of the Galaxy shorthand. If you only credit the story to Tom King, you are missing the comic. We close on James Gunn's Supergirl film with Milly Alcock, why "Woman of Tomorrow" got stripped from the title, and what the adaptation loses when it turns Krem from an ordinary man into a Hellraiser reject with plot armour.Next month: Squadron Supreme (1985), issues 1 to 12. Old-school Marvel madness.Next Month's Book: We are shamelessly riding the cinematic hype train! It's the "novel-length bicentennial blockbuster" contained in the pages of Action Comics 463 from DC Comics. "From 1976 to 1776--Superman gets hit...but it's Clark Kent who lands in the past!" Will the real Superman please stand up? The Man of Tomorrow (aka the Cyborg Superman), the Last Son of Krypton (aka the Eradicator), the Metropolis Kid (aka Superboy), and the Man of Steel (aka John Henry Irons, aka Steel) all lay claim to the name and role in one way or another. Through weekly issues of the Triangle Era Superman titles, these four will vie for the title before (spoiler alert) the true Superman returns from the grave with a new look for the ‘90s (though opinions vary whether he has long hair or an actual mullet). We'll wrap up our look at the death and return of Superman and talk about the big issues: how did Superman pave the way for decades of deaths and resurrections in his wake, why does this story linger in the canon when so many other stunts have been forgotten, and why are superhero fans so obsessed with their favorite superheroes dying, anywayDiscussed in this episode: Action Comics #687-691, Adventures of Superman #500-505, Superman #78-82, Superman: The Man of Steel #22-26, and Green Lantern #46.Support the show at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

In the early ‘90s, DC Comics, facing a changing comics market with the rise of Image Comics and the popularization of the grim ‘n' gritty antihero, replaced the World's Finest team of Superman Clark Kent and Batman Bruce Wayne with upstart newcomers before ultimately restoring the heroes to their original roles and reaffirming their importance. We're spending the summer looking at these mega-epics, beginning with the “Death of Superman” arc. But once the senseless bloodbath is over and the Man of Steel and Doomsday are down for the count, we get to the real heart of the matter: “Funeral for a Friend,” in which superheroes, loved ones, and ordinary citizens of Metropolis alike must mourn the loss of their greatest hero and come to terms with living in a World Without a Superman. We'll look at the first half of the death and return of Superman, share opinions about the Triangle Era of Superman comics, and discuss the real-world media frenzy that fueled sales of Superman #75 (and the lack of said frenzy that made Adventures of Superman #500 the common dollar-bin find it is today).Discussed in this episode: Action Comics #684-686, Adventures of Superman #497-500, Superman #74-77, Superman: The Man of Steel #18-21, Justice League America #69, Superman: The Legacy #1, plus Newstime, an in-universe glossy magazine commemorating the event

"In a just world, Mark Waid is the bar, rather than a notable comics writer." ---------- The saying goes that he who is known as an early riser can get out of bed whenever he wants. Similarly, Action Comics #1094, "Our Superboy At War," pushes the limits of what "liberal" storytelling can depict before it crosses the line into conservative jingoism. Because ostensible progressive Mark Waid wrote it, the actions of the hero within must be just and good. The line drawn here is blurry, and what it divides is less important (although just as obscured) as where it ends. And where it begins. ---------- Special thanks to our Lovable Sidekicks: Better Possible Futures, Kourtney Smith, Walt Lewellyn, Kafka, The Black Casebook's Very Own Nightwing, JD Lunt, Ambird, Mr. Pig from the Intervention, Travis Armstrong, Chris Marks, Wirecats, Sheeee-itttt, VoidTek, Mars Hottentot, Richard Bell, TakoTuesday, Joseph, and Knife Money ---------- Email: collectiveactioncomics@gmail.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/collectiveactioncomics Twitter: https://twitter.com/CAComixPod Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/cacomixpod.bsky.social Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/collectiveactioncomics

Jace and Rocky break down this week's DC releases including Supergirl #13, where Sophie Campbell's handling of Kara's trauma, Kandor's civil unrest and the Black Flame conflict leads to one of the biggest disagreements of the episode, Barbara Gordon Breakout #1 as the hosts debate Barbara willingly entering prison as part of Batman's larger Vandal Savage plan, Bleeding Hearts #4 with Dennis Camp continuing to humanize Polk while expanding the emotional divide between the zombies and humans through Rabbit and Mush, Emperor Aquaman #17 as Jarro makes a shocking decision involving the Starros that dramatically escalates Aquaman's cosmic status and creates major moral fallout, Action Comics #1098 with Mark Waid blending Silver Age Superboy storytelling and modern sensibilities through Mary Marvel, Booster Gold and Martian Manhunter learning more about Clark's origins, Fury of Firestorm #2 as Ronnie Raymond's darker trauma is contrasted against the classic heart-of-gold characterization that defines the hero, Green Lantern Corps #16 with Morgan Hampton expanding the Manhunters' plans to control the emotional spectrum while Aya, Parallax and the emotional entities become central to a massive cosmic power struggle, Absolute Martian Manhunter #11 as the series heads toward its conclusion with more psychological and reality-bending storytelling, and Absolute Batman #20 with discussion of the printing defects, retailer response, massive number of variant covers and continued teases surrounding Scarecrow and Robin. They also discuss the shutdown of Read Comics Online and the larger conversation surrounding comic piracy and affordability before covering this week's facsimiles, reprints and collected editions, ranking every book from the week and each giving their respective Book of the Week picks.
