Intro Hello my dear listeners and friends, and thank you so much for tuning in today! First I want to apologize for the very long gap between episodes. There's been a lot going on over here, and then just as I was getting ready to dive back in again, I got sick and my voice was all raspy, and I didn't think that would work well for new episodes either. I'm not going to promise just yet that we'll return to weekly episodes, but I am working in that direction as best I can! Second, you may have noticed a new name for the podcast, and that's what I wanted to talk to you about today! I don't know if you're the kind of person who tends to try out a bunch of different ideas or who thinks that you can manage approximately ten zillion things just fine, but for my fellow idea people, I know you'll understand the feeling and thought process I'm about to describe. My original conception for this podcast, World of Azuria, was that it would give me a place to share stories about the world of Azuria! Simple enough. But if you've been listening to some of my recent bonus episodes, you'll know that not all of these episodes, not all of these stories, take place in Azuria. In fact, both of the novels I'm working on at the moment take place in Azuria's past, back when the world was still called Eldura. (The explanation of this renaming is in Buried Heroes, so I won't rehash it at this exact moment, though perhaps that can be an episode of its own in the future.)What I really want to createBut working through these episodes and writing across different series—seeing these worlds expand—I have a better understanding now of what I truly want to create, and that is a vibrant, interactive storyverse—an interconnected ecosystem of immersive stories, each of which shapes the others around it. With each story we share, we refine and deepen our understanding of the stories that came before. And what I'm calling this larger vision is “The Storyverse of Verdigris.” In case you don't know, Verdigris is the Titan of Nature from the very foundation of the world. It's because of her sacrifice, her aversion of war between the Negative and Positive Planes, that there are three planes of life closely connected with one another—the Shadowlands, the Brightlands, and the prime plane, called Eldura in the past and Azuria in the present/future, depending on where you stand. I'm really excited about the story-rich possibilities of exploring these interconnections! I hope to share more of this with you in the future but, in the meantime, one good example of what we're building toward is Story Magic, the novella that temporally coincides with book two, Hadvarian Heist. Story Magic actually picks up with Persephonie's story at the end of Buried Heroes and then dips into a great many other stories from saudad lore as we also see the stories and perspectives intersecting with hers. As always, you can find all of my fiction at bethballbooks.com. Over the next couple weeks, I'll have special sneak peeks of Phoenix Rising coming out on the site, and I'll also be sharing some of my plans for future stories in Eldura and perhaps some serialized fiction as well! Happy adventuring, my friends. Until next time!Bonus announcement!I forgot to say so in the episode, but there have been a couple changes with the pricing for my books! Buried Heroes and Aurora...

Episode twenty-eight of the World of Azuria podcast is a special bonus episode celebrating the one-year publication anniversary of Buried Heroes or, more accurately, the one year, four month anniversary! In this episode, I'll take you through my journey with this story from one-on-one D&D campaign to epic fantasy series. IntroductionHello adventurers,And welcome to season two, episode eighteen of the World of Azuria podcast. My name is Beth Ball, and I'm the author of the Age of Azuria epic fantasy series, which we'll be exploring in this show. In some episodes, we'll be swept away into the magical world of Azuria as I read chapters from the novels and stories. In others, we'll dive into the lore behind Azuria, and I'll answer your questions about the world, characters, and more. Gather 'round, my friends, for a story that bridges our world and one of the imagination…In this tale, a young couple in love embarks on a journey together. They'll face monsters, befriend dragons, and learn to distinguish friend from foe. They'll grow closer climbing ancient mountains, flirt and smile at an elegant ball. But most importantly, as in all such stories, they'll find love at the heart of it all. Come closer around the fire. Rest your feet; warm your hands. Our tale begins a few years ago, on a windy March afternoon in 2018…One year ago today, I published my first novel, Buried Heroes, book one in the Age of Azuria epic fantasy series. But the series's origins go back farther than when I first started drafting the novel the year before. A few years prior to that, shortly after our move to North Carolina for my PhD, my husband Jonathan started to play D&D. Maybe you're already familiar with Dungeons and Dragons or maybe tabletop role-playing games are outside the realm of your experience. I had never been a fan of rule-intensive strategy games that took hours and hours. For Jonathan, it was the opposite. He'd always wanted to play D&D, and he was delighted to finally have a group of people to play with. For one whole year, he asked if I wanted to play this in D&D campaign with him, and each time, I said no. I was positive I wouldn't like it. A ConvergenceYou may be thinking, “A year is a long time to say no to something without trying it.” And that's probably true. But toward the end of his first year of playing D&D, a few factors converged, and I decided to give it a try. Jonathan was going to lead (be the Storyteller for) his first session and asked me to play so he'd feel more at ease. [I agreed, and thus, Briseras, who you'll meet in Hadvarian Heist, was born!]Jonathan designed a special, duet (one-on-one) D&D campaign for me. He helped me design a character, a half-elf who I named Iellieth Amastacia. She lived in Io Keep in the kingdom of Linolynn. [If you'd like to read the whole story, you'll find it in Buried Heroes.]The thoughtfulness of both of these moves, and the intimacy of us getting to play with just the two of us, led me to say yes, I would try it. And that decision changed my life. Welcome to Azuria! Our D&D campaign started with me, as Iellieth Amastacia, wandering around Io Keep and bidding farewell to my friends and loved ones before I transmigrated north to Hadvar. (We later adapted that first campaign session into a D&D adventure called First Blush, part...

Here at the beginning of their story, an unsuspecting lycan alpha encounters a fae reyanna deep in the forest. One of the things I love about Azuria is getting to play with the interconnected stories that make up the world and its past. This podcast provides an exciting outlet in that as well, because I can change up the order of the stories and dip back for a little bit, uncover the lore, and then move forward in the narrative differently than I do in the novels. In this eleventh episode of the World of Azuria podcast, Beth shares why she chose Aurora as the introductory story for the Age of Azuria epic fantasy series. Episode Introduction Why this novella and this story?Part of what I wanted to convey with Aurora as the prequel novella for the Age of Azuria series was that, when we really dig into them, it's difficult to uncover a story's true moment of initiation. Book one in the series, Buried Heroes, starts with its own origin point to Iellieth's story, but those events wouldn't have transpired were it not for Emelyee and Dorric's relationship. And Emelyee and Dorric's love would look quite different, if it existed at all, without the influence of Emelyee's grandmother Olivia and the story of Aurora and her elven lover, Sylris. This is one of the aspects I love most about interconnected storylines across multiple perspectives as well. At the same time, we have access to a fuller, more well-rounded story and we better perceive the gaps of what we're not hearing. For instance, we know what Ridel wants and is thinking throughout. However, the perspective and goals of her “bosses,” Lucien and Alessandra, they're more removed, and we approach them through the perspective of Ridel. Another thing I like about Aurora as an introduction to the series is that it gives us a glimpse into the wider world of Azuria shortly before (twenty-two years to be precise) the action of the series really kicks off. I had considered introducing Azuria through the lens of some of the characters in Buried Heroes, Iellieth and Teodric specifically, but I decided instead to take things back farther to her parents' story. Plus, this way, we get to see Yvayne in action as she combats Lucien's forces! I also feel that personal character backstories, as opposed to origin stories, can be more meaningful after you've already met the character in their present adventure. And once we get into Buried Heroes, if you are curious about Iellieth and Teodric's backstories, then there's a second prequel novella just for you—Song of Parting! This won't be the last time that we visit the Aurora estate, though I hope that you enjoyed our time spent here, right at the beginning of a grand adventure!
