Today on The Stacks, we are joined by National Book Award finalist Alejandro Varela to talk about his newest novel, Middle Spoon. Humorously exploring unconventional relationships and complexities of polyamory, this novel follows Alejandro's unnamed narrator, a married man navigating heartbreak after his boyfriend abruptly dumps him. We discuss why he wanted to write about heartbreak, how he brought more of himself to this book, and why it was important to him to depict OCD correctly. The Stacks Book Club pick for December is Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream by H.G. Bissinger. If you're closing out 2025 in the middle of a breakup, this episode is your reset button. When everything feels like it's ending, your relationship, your plans, the version of you that existed with your ex, it's easy to panic and drag old patterns, fears, and expectations into the new year. But 2025 is a "completion year," and instead of fighting the ending, this episode shows you how to use it. I'm walking you through three journal prompts that will help you identify what's truly finished, what you're willing to make space for in the unknown, and who you're becoming as you step into 2026. If you want 2026 to feel nothing like the year you're leaving behind, start with these three questions. They will change how you end this chapter and how you begin the next one. Get Over Your Ex Program is OPEN: https://dorothyabjohnson.com/getoveryourex
This week, we continue our Mike Flanagan Rewind series with Episode 7 of The Haunting of Bly Manor. In this episode, we uncover the dark truth behind Peter and Rebecca's tragic fate at Bly Manor. Through flashbacks, Peter learns the rules of being a ghost: he can briefly possess the living—and, with an invitation, take over a body permanently. But every spirit trapped on the grounds risks losing their face, their memories, and ultimately their identity. Believing they can be together forever, Peter convinces Rebecca to invite him in. Instead of reuniting, he uses her body to walk into the lake, drowning her and binding her to Bly as a ghost. Heartbroken and furious, Rebecca refuses to join his plan to possess the children—Miles and Flora, but Peter continues manipulating events to get what he wants. In the present day, Peter and Rebecca lure Dani to the attic as their scheme reaches its breaking point. The children appear to surrender their bodies to the ghosts, and when Hannah intervenes, Peter (speaking through Miles) forces her to confront her own death. But Flora reveals the truth: she and Rebecca have been pretending, and Rebecca has not taken her over. As Dani attempts a desperate escape with Flora, they are suddenly confronted by Bly Manor's most fearsome spirit—the Lady in the Lake. We also land on our next movie review for next week: Butterfly Kisses, a fun found footage romp.
“The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.” — Oprah Winfrey“你能踏上的最大冒险,就是活出你梦想中的人生。” Childhood memories never really feel far away.Even though my body has changed and the years have passed, the soul that carries everything is still the same “me.” As I grow older, every stage of life brings new challenges that widen and deepen my understanding of the world. After I began my ten-year global journey, people often asked me, “Was your childhood full of changes too? Did it shape the way you live now?”That question made me pause, look back, and reflect on my path of growing up. My Father's Influence — From Strict Upbringing to FreedomMy father grew up in a very strict household. He often told me how tough my Japanese-educated grandfather was, and how he once hung him on a tree and beat him for being too carefree. It was such a humiliating moment that he even thought about ending his life. But instead, he made a vow: “When I have children of my own, I will make sure they grow up happy.” But life challenged him even more. His first wife passed away, leaving behind two young children. Heartbroken and unable to care for them alone, he left them with their grandparents. Because of his damaged relationship with his father, he eventually chose not to return — creating a distance that continued into our generation. After I was born, I was never close to my grandparents or my older siblings. Every time I visited that serious, suffocating house, all I wanted was to escape. A Childhood of Adventure — Constant Moving & Early IndependenceIf childhood is a journey, my parents definitely arranged an adventurous one for me.When I was little, I spent most of my time with my mother. She dressed me up, took me to Wendy's, and while she enjoyed the salad bar, I loved the baked potatoes. I would spend entire afternoons playing in the ball pit.In contrast, my father was fiery, often out drinking for work. My parents' relationship was unstable — sometimes tense, sometimes peaceful. After entering elementary school, my parents became even busier.I began walking to and from school alone — an early taste of freedom, but also a doorway to danger. I encountered bad people and frightening situations more than once. Still, my parents believed it was “training,” a way to learn independence. Those experiences sharpened my instincts. Although I was scared at the time, I now feel grateful — they taught me how to protect myself. Life wasn't smooth. One night changed everything.Once, my mom accidentally spent the money reserved for rent. At the same time, my father's company went bankrupt. That very night, we had to move out immediately.Just like that, we began living in other people's homes.I changed schools five times. Every time I finally made friends, it was time to leave again. It was painful then — but those constant changes taught me to adapt, to enjoy every new beginning.

Jennifer Berezan reflects on the necessity for courage, compassion, and the power of community in uncertain times. Even to simply stop and sit with what is requires bravery—especially amid aging, societal unrest, and personal struggles. She emphasizes meeting the moment with “loving awareness,” as Jack Kornfield taught, and encourages us to find refuge in practice, even when the world feels heavy. In her signature style, Jennifer weaves music and story into the dharma, sharing mantras and songs that uplift and reconnect. She honors her late teacher Joanna Macy, an eco-philosopher and Buddhist scholar, recounting their journey to witness environmental devastation in Alberta and Macy's profound teaching: “The heart that breaks open can contain the whole universe,” which embodies the bodhisattva Tara and her mantra as a call to compassionate action. Jennifer closes with a poem by Andrea Gibson and a song by Carrie Newcomer, reminding us that joy, beauty, and connection are radical acts of healing.______________Jennifer Berezan is a unique blend of singer/songwriter, producer, and activist. Over the course of ten albums, she has developed and explored recurring themes with a rare wisdom. Her lifelong involvement in environmental, women's, and other justice movements as well as an interest in Buddhism and earth-based spirituality are at the heart of her writing. In this episode, we dive into the enchanting world of Abhijnana Shakuntala, the immortal Sanskrit play by the great poet Kalidasa. It is a tale of love, destiny, and divine reunion.Shakuntala, the gentle daughter of sage Vishwamitra and the celestial nymph Menaka, grows up in the peaceful forest hermitage of Sage Kanva. One day, King Dushyanta arrives while hunting and meets Shakuntala. Their eyes meet, and a tender love blossoms. The two marry in secret through the Gandharva custom, and Dushyanta gives her a royal ring as a token of remembrance. But fate plays a cruel trick — the sage Durvasa, angered when Shakuntala fails to greet him lost in her thoughts of love, curses her that the one she dreams of will forget her. Only when Dushyanta sees the ring again will he remember her. When Shakuntala travels to the palace, she loses the ring in a river — swallowed by a fish. Dushyanta, unable to recognize her, turns her away. Heartbroken, Shakuntala vanishes into divine care. Later, when the lost ring is found, Dushyanta's memory returns, and he repents deeply. In the end, guided by fate and the gods, he reunites with Shakuntala and their little son Bharata, the future emperor of India. This timeless story reminds us that true love, though tested by time and fate, always finds its way back
It's a brand new episode — Brian is back to help us review the second Hallmark Christmas movie of the season: A Christmas Angel Match.ABOUT A CHRISTMAS ANGEL MATCHTwo Christmas Angels with opposite styles must unite soulmates before the holiday while dealing with department downsizing and their own unexpected connection.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR A CHRISTMAS ANGEL MATCHSunday, October 19, 2025 | Hallmark ChannelCAST & CREW OF A CHRISTMAS ANGEL MATCHMeghan Ory as MonicaBenjamin Ayres as MichaelDirected by Christie Will WolfBRAN'S A CHRISTMAS ANGEL MATCH SYNOPSISDo you know how some people are drawn together in what seems to be a magical way? MMMM… try angels. The Christmas Connection Angels spend the entire year finding folks who could use a little Christmas love. Monica is one of the oldest and best of the bunch—she's been doing this since before the first Christmas tree. But lately, it's getting harder than ever. Humans are distracted by their phones and their busy lives, and Monica's starting to feel disheartened. While venting to one of her angel friends about how things are going, she bumps—literally—into fellow angel Michael, spilling coffee everywhere. Ugh. The worst.Michael's an up-and-comer—an angel who already has his wings, even though he's not yet a century old. Monica can't stand him. For all her careful preparation, he's the opposite: impulsive and a bit of a rule-bender.At the annual Christmas Connection meeting, led by Gabriel, Monica gets even more bad news—she's not winning “Angel of the Year.” That honor is going to (you guessed it) Michael. To make things even more complicated, Monica and Michael are assigned the same two humans to match—Patrick and Daisy. This has never happened before, but Cloud Command says it must be so.When they pop down to Earth, their very different approaches immediately clash. Michael loves pushing the limits of what angels are allowed to do—something Monica finds both frustrating and, annoyingly, kind of intriguing. Despite their efforts, Patrick and Daisy just aren't clicking. As Monica and Michael spend more time together, they open up to each other. Monica reveals that she matched Patrick's great-grandparents—and every generation since. Patrick is a legacy match, and this one means everything to her.But when the match still doesn't happen, Gabriel calls them in. Monica is put on leave, and Michael—trying to protect her—gives up his wings. When Monica returns to plead his case, she overhears what she thinks is Michael saying she doesn't have what it takes anymore.Heartbroken, Monica heads down to Earth for some hot chocolate and, for the first time ever, a good cry. There, she runs into Michael. They talk, reconcile, and he tells her how truly amazing she is. Together, they decide to throw caution to the wind and make Patrick and Daisy's love story happen once and for all—and they do.Afterward, Monica and Michael have a playful snowball fight, laughing and realizing they're feeling something new—something “flutterous.” Gabriel appears, revealing that they were his mission all along. As golden dust of the Holy Spirit falls around them, Gabriel grants them a new promotion—a life of love. They slow dance beneath the glow as the gold dust swirls, and finally… they kissssss.

Guillaume Le Gentil spent more than 11 years away from his native France just to witness two brief astronomical events. Along the way, he had to survive war, a hurricane, disease, and grumpy officials. When he got home, he’d lost his job and been declared dead. But the real hardship? He missed both events. Le Gentil was born 300 years ago this week. He studied theology, but decided on astronomy as a career. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Science at age 28. Le Gentil and other astronomers hoped to measure a 1761 transit of Venus across the Sun from many locations on Earth. The details would reveal the Sun’s distance – the basic “yardstick” for the entire solar system. Le Gentil planned to watch from India. He headed out in March of 1760. War with England complicated the trip, and his ship was blown off course. On the day of the transit he was still at sea, where it was impossible to make observations. The next transit was just eight years away, so Le Gentil decided to hang around. He planned to watch from the Philippines. But he got a chilly reception, so he returned to India. He set up an observatory and waited. But the day of the transit was cloudy – until shortly after it was over. Heartbroken, Le Gentil headed home. It took two hard years to get there – only to encounter even more problems. But he worked things out, and published two volumes about his travels in the name of science. Script by Damond Benningfield
Florida's flop against USF in the Swamp has coach Billy Napier and the Gators with their backs against the wall and searching for answers. Expected to be the final tune-up prior to SEC play, the Bulls' stunning 18-16 win could be the beginning of a Florida freefall unless the Gators can turn it around before heading to No. 3 LSU, followed by a visit to No. 5 Miami. Napier took ownership and said all the right things, but his team's sloppy, lackluster, disappointing performance Saturday looked all too familiar. Squeeze's Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook are one of rock's greatest songwriting tandems, with Tilbrook crafting indelible melodies around Difford's emotionally detailed lyrics. Here Difford digs into the evolution of his and Tilbrook's partnership. When Difford hands over his lyrics, does he suggest a musical direction to Tilbrook? Did Difford know that “Pulling Mussels (from the Shell)” would be a rocker, “Labelled with Love” a country song, “Slaughtered, Gutted and Heartbroken” an old-timey shuffle? Was he surprised that "Hourglass" became their biggest hit? When they write together now, is there tension over tackling more political topics versus pursuing Difford's brand of personal storytelling? Difford also discusses singing in octaves and taking the occasional lead, the impact of producers such as John Wood and Elvis Costello (and the song he co-wrote with Costello), why so many keyboardists joined and left Squeeze and the reasons the band broke up and regrouped the first time.

In King Lear, Shakespeare has the king cry out, “Break, heart; I prithee, break!”—a line rich with sorrow, and one that may have held deeper meaning for Shakespeare's audience than we often assume. Modern medicine identifies Takotsubo Syndrome—also known as “broken heart syndrome”—as a temporary dysfunction of the heart triggered by emotional distress. Incredibly, this concept may have had early roots in the Renaissance understanding of how emotion and the body were intertwined. In this episode, we explore the 17th-century medical beliefs that made room for literal heartbreak, and the evidence in Shakespeare's plays that suggests he was engaging with those very ideas. From Lear and Gloucester to Enobarbus and Cleopatra, Shakespeare's characters don't just feel emotion—they suffer from it physically, sometimes fatally. Our guests this week, Dr. Bríd Phillips and Dr. Claire Hansen, are here to unpack their research connecting Shakespeare's portrayals of heartbreak with modern cardiology, showing us how the science of the heart may have been hidden in plain sight on the Renaissance stage.
