The Mike Hosking Breakfast
Paul Goldsmith: Justice Minister on deploying bailiffs to scan cars' number plates to crack down on overdue fines and reparations

A clear message from the Justice Minister – if you don't pay your court fines, you could be walking home. Every bailiff in the country is out today scanning parked cars' number plates as part of a wider programme clamping down on people overdue on fines and reparations. Between July last year and last Friday, more than 400 vehicles have been seized and nearly 700 cars have been clamped, bringing in more than $4.2 million. Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith told Mike Hosking we've been too soft on this in the past. He's told officials to harden up, as we've let people away with not paying or repaying one dollar a week. Goldsmith admits there is an element of PR, telling Hosking they want to get the message out that you have to pay your fines, so the money can be spent helping victims. Often, it is the way the system is designed to manage work.In this episode, I explore why overdue tasks keep piling up in your law practice and why traditional task management approaches often make the problem worse. I explain how practice management software can create task overload by treating every matter independently instead of accounting for the team's shared capacity to complete the work.Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: agileattorney.comTake your law practice from overwhelmed to optimized with GreenLine LegalFollow along on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/johnegrant

Episode 497: The Relationship-First Approach to Recovering Overdue Payments with Dee Bowden

Amplify Your Success

Nothing creates more stress in business than doing the work... and not getting paid by your client on time. Whether it's an overlooked invoice, a client who's gone silent, or a payment that's months overdue, unpaid invoices can quickly become more than a cash flow problem. They create uncertainty, frustration, and difficult conversations that many business owners would rather avoid. But what if collecting what you're owed didn't have to damage the relationship? In Episode 497 of Amplify Your Success Podcast, I sit down with revenue recovery specialist Dee Bowden to explore a relationship-first approach to collecting unpaid invoices. Rather than leading with confrontation or assumptions, Dee shares why every unpaid invoice has a story and how curiosity, communication, and problem-solving often uncover solutions that benefit everyone involved. Drawing from more than two decades of experience recovering millions of dollars in unpaid revenue, Dee shares her 4 Keys Framework, practical strategies for investigating payment delays, and simple systems every business owner should have in place before unpaid invoices become a bigger issue.  If you've ever hesitated to follow up on an unpaid invoice, or worried that asking for payment could damage a client relationship, this conversation will help you approach collections with greater confidence, professionalism, and compassion.   Key Takeaways: [02:42] Dee shares the story that inspired her relationship-first approach to revenue recovery after helping recover millions in unpaid invoices. [05:30] Why asking "What happened?" is often more effective than demanding payment. [10:43] The common internal mistakes businesses make that delay invoice payments. [14:23] Why every unpaid invoice has a story—and how to uncover it before making assumptions. [17:19] How relationship-based communication leads to better payment outcomes than confrontation. [20:08] What to do when a client genuinely can't pay their invoice in full. [23:35] Why grace, accountability, and clear payment plans can preserve valuable client relationships. [26:46] How to decide when it's time to keep pursuing payment and when it's appropriate to walk away. [31:08] The simple tracking system every business should use to stay on top of invoices and cash flow. [33:26] Dee's "Pregame, Game Day, Postgame" mindset for approaching difficult collection conversations with confidence. About The Guest:  Revenue Recovery Specialist & Author of Collect the Cash™ Dee Bowden has more than two decades of experience in improving cash flow and reducing revenue loss from unpaid invoices. She is the creator of the Collect the Cash™ Brand through which she teaches business owners that the Sale is not Complete until the Money is in the Bank! Today Dr Shefali, a NYT bestselling author and the world's leading conscious parenting psychologist, joins Erika to unpack the childhood patterns running your adult life, and how to stop them here. This isn't another conversation about how to be a better parent. It's about understanding the difference between who you became by default and who you actually want to be. If you've ever caught yourself thinking: "Why does this keep happening to me no matter what I do?" "I know my past affected me but I don't know how much" "I keep reacting in ways I don't understand and I don't know why" "I've been waiting for someone to say sorry so I can finally move on" "I don't want to repeat what was done to me but I don't know how to stop" Then this episode is for you. In this conversation, Erika and Dr Shefali cover: - Why we absorb our parents' patterns without ever choosing to, and how to recognise them in yourself - At what point your childhood stops being an explanation and starts being a choice The illusion of closure and why you don't need anyone else to give it to you - How to give yourself what your parents never did - What conscious parenting actually means and why it starts with you, not your child - The live coaching moment where Dr Shefali unpacks Erika's own trigger in real time - Why the critical voice in your head has your parent's voice, and what to do about it - How to talk to a parent who isn't conscious without losing yourself - Why boys and girls need to be raised differently in a world of algorithms and social media - Where the line is between sharing your child online and using them for content The patterns stop here. And this conversation is where it starts. Some things stay with you long after a conversation ends. This is one of them. CONNECT

Paul Beatty took the Booker Prize in 2015 with this satirical novel about a grieving man's attempts to put his small town back on the map. The book lampoons the notion of a post-racial America, touching the fourth rail of "political correctness" with outlandish scenes of segregation and slavery. It's a real high-wire act of a premise that he mostly pulls off??Head to MarleySpoon.com/offer/OVERDUE for up to 25 FREE meals! Our theme music was composed by Nick Lerangis.Follow @overduepod on Instagram and BlueskyAdvertise on OverdueSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Usually when robots gain sentience in fiction, they rise up and slay or otherwise subjugate their human creators, but this week's book dares to imagine what might happen if they stood up, looked around, said "thanks but no thanks," and left. It also ponders the meaning of existence, just for good measure.Head to MarleySpoon.com/offer/OVERDUE for up to 25 FREE meals! Is the American Republic Overdue for a Tune-up? The Not Old Better Show, Art of Living Interview Series Author and political thinker Mike Bedenbaugh believes so—and he's done something about it. Drawing on his life as a Navy veteran, historic preservationist, and civic leader, Mike wrote Reviving Our Republic: 95 Theses for the Future of America. Today's episode is brought to you by Hungryroot! Hungryroot…tailored meals for your taste. In our latest interview, he explains how George Washington's Farewell Address still holds powerful lessons for today's governance—and how we've drifted far from that original wisdom. We talk about foreign policy, career politicians, corporate influence, and the emotional wear-and-tear on civic trust. But this isn't doom and gloom. Mike is refreshingly practical and grounded.
