John MacDonald: Russia's ambassador is overdue a trip home

190 days. That's how long it's been since I first asked these two questions: Why is the Russian ambassador still parked-up at the embassy in Wellington? And when is the Government going to kick him out? That was on March 17 - 28 days after Russia launched its attack on Ukraine. It will be seven months ago tomorrow (Saturday) when Putin said “fire”. But despite all the death and carnage, Russia's ambassador is still in New Zealand and still pumping out the propaganda on the embassy's Facebook page. You may remember the stuff the embassy was posting back in March, saying that that appalling missile strike on the maternity and children's hospital in Ukraine was fake news because the hospital was empty and was just being used by the Ukrainians for firing practise. And it's still at it. As I said back in March, if the ambassador wants to post that sort of propaganda on Facebook, let him do it in Moscow - not Wellington. The question about the Russian ambassador's ongoing presence in New Zealand is up for discussion again today for two reasons: National's Foreign Affairs spokesperson Gerry Brownlee has repeated his demands for the ambassador to be expelled, and the Foreign Affairs Minister is now actually saying for the first time that the Government is “actively considering” finally doing it Nanaia Mahuta yesterday described Vladimir Putin's threat of nuclear war as an "increased escalation of tension that is not helpful on a number of fronts". Don't you just love the diplomatic weasel words? Here we've got a guy saying ‘don't make me press the button and go nuclear”, and the diplomatic-speak describes that as “not helpful on a number of fronts”. Still, the way the Government's talking about this now is light years ahead of what it's been saying up until now. Until yesterday, it had been saying that kicking out the ambassador wasn't an option because it wanted to keep the diplomatic channels open. Although, the PM appeared to be pouring cold water on that earlier today. My position hasn't changed since March. I thought then that it was appalling that the ambassador was still here - it's even more appalling that he's still here, seven months since the invasion. More so actually, given Putin's threat to go nuclear. As Gerry Brownlee is saying: "The Russian Ambassador should have been expelled long before now. His continued presence in New Zealand is completely untenable with the ongoing atrocities and escalation of Russia's war on Ukraine. “New Zealand has always been proud of its nuclear-free stance. The Government needs to respond to the threat of nuclear retaliation by finally expelling the Russian ambassador.” And I couldn't agree more with Gerry Brownlee. The guy should have gone months ago. And, in my mind, expulsion is the only option.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The children need dental work under general anaesthetic, either because it is for complex, often very painful conditions, or because they'd struggle to put up with have the work while they are awake. The region's specialist dental service was given hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the problem in 2020 but has been chasing its tail because the pace of referrals is increasing. I was facilitating the Steel Masterplan Conference recently where the theme of a bring-and-braai, emerged around how we approach tariffs and industrialisation, if one your mates at a bring-and-braai keeps on only bringing peanuts while you bring the fillet you are going to let them know, but does it ruin the friendship? Only if you are silent. This was thrown into stark relief recently when the duties on imported chicken were lifted without prior consultation and in a surprising move to local poultry producers. As such, it has emerged that industry is no longer willing to remain silent over Billions of Rands that are tied up in overdue ITAC customs duty investigations, with far-reaching implications for the affected industries. The delays inhibit both trade and investment and need to be resolved. XA Global Trade Advisors recently launch its first Open Cases Report, which outlines how long these cases are taking to be decided; how long they should actually take in terms of the law; and most critically, what the cost of these delays means for the fiscus and business uncertainty. The star system U Scorpii ran a little late. It was expected to erupt in 2020. But it took some extra time — it didn't pop off until last month. U Scorpii is a binary system. One of its members is the corpse of a once normal star, known as a white dwarf. The other is in the prime of life. They're so close together that they orbit each other once every 1.2 days. At such close range, the white dwarf pulls gas off the surface of its companion. The gas forms a disk around the white dwarf. It spirals inward, piling up on the surface of the white dwarf. But that can go on for only so long. In the case of U Scorpii, that's about 10 years. At the end of that period, the new layer of gas is so hot that it triggers a nuclear explosion — the surface becomes a giant H-bomb — an eruption known as a nova. In just a few hours, that makes the system about 10,000 times brighter. It also blows away the disk around the white dwarf, although it begins to re-form within days. U Scorpii's first outburst was seen in 1863. Until June, the most recent was in January of 2010. Astronomers had expected it to erupt again as early as two years ago. But it came a little late — making the system flare thousands of times brighter than average. U Scorpii is in Scorpius, which is low in the south at nightfall. The star is above Antares, the scorpion's heart. It's faded dramatically since its outburst, so it's much too faint to see without a telescope.
