Johnstown's history was shaped by immigrants, and Jesper Nielsen, originally from Denmark, has shown the impact an individual can have with a supportive community around him. Nielsen and his wife, Amy Croyle, opened Croyle-Nielsen Therapeutic Associates, 303 Budfield St. in Richland Township 10 years ago, and in a move completely unrelated to his own work, Nielsen has bridged Denmark to Johnstown in the defense industry.

Tony Sunseri Wholesale Distributors has been in business for 81 years, meeting challenges brought by World War II, Johnstown's devastating 1977 flood, the COVID-19 pandemic and many others. Tony Battaglia's grandfather on his mother's side of the family, Tony Sunseri, started the business on Railroad Street in downtown Johnstown. Over time, big chain stores edged out the mom-and-pops that formed Sunseri's customer base, and the Johnstown flood of 1977 destroyed businesses including many on Railroad Street where Sunseri Wholesale was originally located – a fire just a few years before the flood led to the Sunseri company's relocation to Oak Street. Anchored by a belief in treating customers right, generation after generation of the Sunseri family adapted to sustain the business through the decades.
Emma Spinelli began making sandwiches for mill workers employed by Bethlehem Steel Corp. more than 70 years ago. Today, Em's Subs is continued by the Beckner family. Bill and Melanie Beckner have owned the business for the past 17 years. Melanie Beckner died in March. Their son, Heath, and his wife, Rebekah, joined the family business in 2013. Em's has grown to include five locations. The Beckners own all five as well as The Meadows, an ice cream shop.
For more than 100 years, Brett Insurance Agency has provided businesses and people in Johnstown with insurance to help them recover from losses. President Jim Brett is the third generation of his family to run the business, located at 225 Vine St. in downtown Johnstown. One of his sons, Will Brett, a producer with the business, has plans to succeed his father as the fourth generation. Both are guests in this episode. An affiliation with a network of similar independent agencies across multiple states, and the retention of good people to work with him, Jim said, have been keys to Brett Insurance's success over the years. The agency has expanded regionally throughout Cambria and Somerset counties.
Joe Poborsky founded JMA Collision Center in 1989. He built a state of the art facility in South Fork Borough in 2006, just off the St Michael / Sidman exit of Route 219. He subsequently spent years saving money to build a second location in Johnstown's Kernville neighborhood – in 2013, Poborsky opened that location at 505, Somerset St., just off the Bedford Street Exit of the Route 56 bypass. His third location opened in February of 2021 at the intersection of Rt 22 and 271, four miles west of Ebensburg. At all three locations, JMA Collision Repair produces repairs bringing cars back to exact factory specifications.
Matt Brubaker is the fourth-generation owner of his family's business, O'Shea's Candies, which has been providing sweetness to customers since 1934, through adversity including two of Johnstown's historic floods. He and his wife, Kristy Brubaker, are guests for this episode. O'Shea's Candies has three retail locations and a manufacturing center, where the candies are handmade at 1118 Solomon St. in Johnstown. Matt and Kristy took ownership of the business in 2015.
