Today's episode is a really practical conversation for anyone that is preparing for wholesale trade shows, especially if you're newer to exhibiting or you're trying to decide whether trade shows are the right next step for your business. I'm joined by Karen Sawyer-Meehan of Pier Six Press. She is a longtime Proof to Product client, a seasoned trade show exhibitor, and also one of the co-chairs of the Noted trade show which is done through the Greeting Card Association. In this episode, we're talking about what actually makes a booth stand out on the show floor, why product cohesion matters more than having a huge product line, how buyers are making snap decisions as they walk the aisles of a trade show, and why your trade show booth needs to communicate your brand point of view within seconds. We also talk about booth setup, product placement, trade show etiquette, and how to make the most of those in person conversations without feeling like you're coming across as pushy or awkward. We also talk about how having a positive mindset when exhibiting at trade shows is absolutely critical. There's a lot of tactical advice here packed into this episode, but also a lot of perspective around what it takes to build wholesale relationships over time and how trade shows are just one step in that journey. It's an optional step, but it is one step that a lot of folks are taking and seeing success from. Whether you're actively preparing for a show right now or starting to think about whether wholesale trade shows are for your future, I think you're going to get a lot from this conversation with Karen.Today's episode is brought to you by our Is Wholesale Right for You private podcast! Episode 304 reunites The Analysts — Remarkable Retail's celebrated panel of Forrester's Sucharita Kodali, Guggenheim's Simeon Siegel, and GlobalData's Neil Saunders — to take stock of retail coming out of earnings season. Steve Dennis and Michael LeBlanc open on the paradox of 2026: results are largely strong, sentiment is dismal. Simeon argues the link between the two is "tenuous at best" — people talk one way and spend another. Neil has the data: roughly 60% of shoppers who expect the economy to worsen still spent more than a year ago, propped up by spring tax refunds that won't repeat. Then the K-shaped economy. Higher-income households drive most of the real volume growth; middle-income shoppers prop up value growth mainly because prices are higher. Sucharita revisits "peak ambiguity" and the "vibe session," noting record sales barely outrun stubborn inflation. The panel unpacks the standouts — Ross's 17% comp, Victoria's Secret up 15% — and debates GLP-1's role in surging apparel and beauty: wardrobe replacement, new confidence, trading up to statement pieces. On turnarounds, Simeon lands the episode's sharpest thesis: brands "ubiquitize" and peak around $3–4 billion in the US. Lululemon got too big, over-distributed, and over-earning — so the bad sales have to "walk out the door" before the brand can re-elevate, the same lens that frames Nike's long reset. He and Sucharita draw the Gap parallel ahead of Simeon's on-stage interview with Mickey Drexler, noting Old Navy now dwarfs Gap itself. Neil makes the case for Macy's under Tony Spring — basics fixed first, satisfaction and visitation improving — while Steve stays skeptical of the pace. Next, the DTC reckoning. Simeon reframes his old "DTC is not all it's cracked up to be" call as "anti-anti-wholesale": outside high-margin luxury, nearly every brand needs a healthy wholesale business — and stores remain the best channel because "the customer is your employee." Sucharita pushes back on the AI narrative, reminding everyone it's far more than generative hype, as the panel digs into why scaled players — Amazon, Walmart, Costco, off-price — keep compounding through retail media, marketplaces, and flywheel economics. It closes on the wealth effect, trillion-dollar market caps, and whether a market correction could rattle high-end spending — then rapid-fire hot takes: brands to watch (Cozey, Ross Stores, Goyard) and what's on each analyst's radar, from inflation and surging oil prices to a quiet "middle of the doughnut" news lull and an election year's hunt for stability. Boss Your Business: The Pet Boss Podcast with Candace D'Agnolo
Can indie pet stores really out-compete Amazon, Chewy, and Petco? Pearce Tibbles, CEO of Wholesale Pet, says yes - but it takes strategy, technology, and intentionality. In this interview, Pearce walks through how Wholesale Pet spent over a year gathering feedback from retailers and vendors before completely redesigning their platform. The result? AI-powered search, curated collections, new vendor tools, and a focus on helping independent stores compete on their actual advantages—not by trying to be Chewy. You will hear: ✅ Why Pearce is optimistic about indie pet stores ✅ The structural advantages indie stores have over big box ✅ The new AI-powered search that solves the "finding a needle in a haystack" problem ✅ Collections: how to curate products by season, pet type, or customer (and share them with other retailers) ✅ How retailers can find trending products across US indie stores in real time Plus how to avoid the financing trap, why changing your store layout bi-weekly drives foot traffic, and why inventory is your ATM. ABOUT Pearce TIBBLES CEO, Wholesale Pet Pearce Tibbles loves brick & mortar small business and believes it plays an indispensable role in local communities. He's passionate about finding new ways technology can help independents compete against ecommerce and big box stores. Pearce has spent most of his career with a foot in each world: he was a partner in a company that built an app for training restaurant and small retail store employees, owned and operated his own brick & mortar service business for many years, and has worked in software and technology for the past 8 years. When he started at Wholesale Pet in 2024, he brought with him a mindset focused on staying really close to customers, learning their businesses intimately—how they operate, what they spend money on, what their competitive challenges are—and figuring out ways to help them not just survive but succeed and outcompete ecommerce and big box stores. The new Wholesale Pet site is the first really big step in this direction, with more exciting developments coming in the months ahead. Most people who deal with E-Stim Systems never speak to me. They speak to Kay. She runs our sales, answers the phones, handles the emails and the live chat, and quietly built the wholesale side of this business from nothing. So for once I handed the microphone to the person who actually does the talking. We recorded this in a hotel room in Barcelona, the night before a trade show, with a brew and no real plan. Remember Victor Kiam? The man who tried a Remington and was so taken with it he bought the company. "So impressed, I bought the company," as he put it. Kay's version went a bit differently. She turned up in 2006 as a customer, bought a Series 1, came back for a remote, made a glib comment about why nobody stocked us in shops, and then talked her way into getting us into shops. She didn't quite buy the company. She just helped build the wholesale side of it from nothing, and put up with me and my little black book for the best part of twenty years. We get into the bits nobody tells you about this trade. The Dragon's Den moment where a store manager told us we'd never survive. They're gone. We're worldwide. Why you can't just double your money on adult products. What actually makes a stockist sell, and why it's never the margin. The nervous customer who walked past the shop three or four times before he came in. The Python that US customs flagged as an endangered species. And how a company this small keeps innovating with no development team, no design house, and no crowdfunder in sight.Kay also talks, in her own words, about coming out as trans during lockdown, and what changed from Mick to Kay. We're putting this one out in Pride Month. That felt right. You'll notice we didn't make a song or dance about it, and that was deliberate. It's her story, told her way.Next month, the machines take over. That's the second Tuesday of July. You'll find E-Stim Systems wherever you care to look, and the podcast wherever you're listening to this right now. Give it a follow, and as always, be safe and have fun.Drop us a message, we cannot reply directly but it would be great to hear from you"I Make Sex Toys" is the personal podcast of Wayne Allen, the Director of E-Stim Systems. Most independent agency owners look at a private equity acquisition as the ultimate finish line. They assume that getting bought by a massive national broker will instantly solve their back-office problems, open up new markets, and fund their ride into the sunset. But here is the harsh reality of the M&A space today: if you don't read the fine print, your dream deal can quickly turn into an absolute nightmare. My guest, John Lipton, a 30-year veteran property and casualty advisor, joins me to share one of the most unique agency trajectories you will ever hear. John built a scratch agency by hand, sold 50% of it under an accumulation structure that no longer exists today, bought the entire entity back, and turned around to sell it again 24 hours later. We break down the absolute madness of his early career trading currencies on a French bank floor during structural market collapses, why P&C is fundamentally a need-based consultative process rather than a transactional hard sale, and why agency owners must watch their peripheral vision to protect their commissions from post-acquisition contract changes. John also shares his experience as an expert witness in broker defense and how seeing egregious gaps in coverage shapes how he teaches his own team.▶▶ Sign Up For Your Free Discovery Callcompletegameu.com/agaTimestamped Outline(00:00) From the Trading Floor to the Finish Line: Introducing John Lipton(01:26) Forex Trading in the 90s: Fast Markets, Big Losses, and Structural Stress(04:05) Sitting in the Seat When the French Franc Collapsed(05:01) Job Security Over Burnout: How the Advent of the Euro Shifted the Market(06:02) The Family Gateway: Moving from Wholesale to a Retail Scratch Agency(08:42) Legacy Over Leverage: The Fortitude Required to Build a Firm from Nothing(10:21) Selling a Need: Why P&C Brokers Have an Advantage Over Life Insurance(13:47) Complex Products for Unexperienced Clients: Becoming an Educator(16:39) The Low Barrier to Entry: When Theory Fails Reality in Broker Training(18:15) Access to Markets: Why Back-Office Support Makes Acquisitions Attractive(21:03) The 50/50 Deal: How John Protected His Agency Expenses from Board Overreach(23:24) Cleaning up Shop: The Low-Price Buyback That Epic and Capacity Didn't See Coming(25:50) The 24-Hour Flip: Buying Your Business Back and Selling It the Next Day(27:51) Don't Start with the Finish Line: Why Building for an Earn-out Fails(31:47) Tadpoles in the Ocean: The Risk of Small Agencies Merging Into Mega Firms(35:52) Expert Witness Work: Leveraging Broker Defense to Identify Coverage Gaps(38:52) John's Lightning Round: Panera Coffee Sip Club, Over-40 Lacrosse, and the Ironman 70.3CONNECT WITH ANDY NEARY
In this episode, Rebecca sits down with Jennifer Dewhirst, Director of Brand and Merchandising at Dovetail Furniture, for a behind-the-scenes look at how wholesale furniture collections are built for designers. Jennifer shares how Dovetail develops new collections twice a year, what goes into preparing for High Point Market, and how the team balances trendy pieces with timeless, well-made furniture that designers can rely on for years. They also talk about the current shift toward warmer wood tones, traditional silhouettes, richer colors, and more collected interiors, as well as the difference between European and North American furniture preferences. If you've ever wondered what happens before a furniture piece lands in a showroom, this episode gives you a rare look at the design, sourcing, merchandising, and decision-making behind the scenes. Rebecca and Jennifer discuss: How wholesale furniture collections are created What makes a piece timeless versus trendy Why quality and craftsmanship matter when sourcing How Dovetail responds to designer feedback Why High Point Market is so valuable for designers How to think about trends without creating dated interiors This conversation will help you source with more confidence, understand what goes into the products you specify, and think more strategically about the furniture you bring into your client projects.

Today, we are breaking down Auto1, and this is an interesting episode because we are tackling a business that most US listeners will not be familiar with, even though it resembles names they already know well. Our guest is Harrison Moot, co-founder and CIO of Sandstone, who walks us through Europe's largest vertically integrated online marketplace for used cars. Auto1 is often shorthanded as the Carvana of Europe, and the comparison directionally fits, but the differences are what make the company worth understanding on its own terms. The core of the conversation is how Harrison frames the company. He argues that Auto1 is best understood as a pan-European clearing house for used vehicles rather than a dealer with a website, and that the model only works because the company built its consumer sourcing engine and its wholesale dealer liquidity for nearly a decade before ever launching the consumer retail business. Owning the sourcing, logistics, refurbishment, and financing stack across thirty fragmented national markets gives Auto1 a pricing and routing advantage that local dealers and asset-light classifieds cannot replicate. Please enjoy this Breakdown of Auto1. The CPG Guys are joined in this episode by John FitzGerald, Sr Director of Growth at Mad Tree Brewing Company. Founded in 2013, MadTree is an award-winning brewery that's rooted in Cincinnati and planted in purpose. Driven to craft great beer - but more importantly - build a business dedicated to doing good, MadTree protects and celebrates nature while reducing impact on the environment. MadTree is a B-Corp certified company and proud member of 1% for the Planet with a commitment to donate 1% of sales to local, sustainable nonprofits. Follow John on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnwfitzg/Follow Mad Tree Brewing online at: https://madtree.com/ John answers these questions:What is the one core discipline or strategic framework from that world that you've found most indispensable when running a craft brand like MadTree? How do you find the balance between Big CPG rigor and the "fail fast" agility required in the craft brewing industry? When you look at the beer aisle now—which is notoriously crowded and fragmented—how do you apply a "Category Management" mindset to help MadTree win at the shelf against the mega-brewers?How are you leveraging your background in retail partnerships to ensure MadTree isn't just a "local favorite" but a "must-have" brand for major regional retailers? From a leadership perspective, how do you ensure that sustainability isn't just a marketing "badge" but a functional part of your supply chain and operational DNA?You're managing a complex journey between the taproom (DTC/Experience) and the grocery store (Wholesale). How do you ensure the brand "feeling" a consumer gets in the Oakley taproom translates when they are picking up a 6-pack at Kroger or Meijer? In craft beer, data can often be opaque. How are you building a "Full View" of your consumer, and are you leveraging tools like AI to predict the next big flavor profile or seasonal trend? How is MadTree evolving its product portfolio to capture that shifting demographic and maintain relevance? For a regional brewer, how critical is real-time inventory and sales data to your production planning, and how do you handle those "uncomfortable" supply chain moments? What is the biggest "reality check" you can give to someone looking to transition from a global giant like Kellanova to a high-growth local leader like MadTree?CPG Guys Website: http://CPGguys.comFMCG Guys Website: http://FMCGguys.comSheCOMMERCE Website: https://shecommercepodcast.com/Rhea Raj's Website: http://rhearaj.comLara Raj in Katseye: https://www.katseye.world/DISCLAIMER: The content in this podcast episode is provided for general informational purposes only. After running money for hundred-millionaires and billionaires, Rohit learned that affluent clients optimize for structure, behavior, and optionality before they optimize for return. TThe "synthetic PUA" reframes everything for IBC practitioners. You can't use a PUA rider inside a cash balance plan, which might make IBC enthusiasts dismiss it immediately. But think of the tax deduction itself as a synthetic PUA. .Wholesale pricing changes the math entirely. To pay $100,000 of premium with after-tax dollars, you have to earn roughly $140,000 to $150,000 depending on your state. The distribution arbitrage is the cherry on top. When you pull a $1 million policy out of the plan, you owe taxes just like an IRA distribution. But unlike an IRA, the custodian cannot withhold from the policy itself.
